ABSTRACT The use of psychoactive substances has its origin when the man, already in society, takes advantage of natural resources to adapt to the difficulties of the environment in which he lived. Continued use can trigger addiction, the term here used as the repetitive use of a substance with harmful long-term consequences. There are some models that explain the effect of drug use, but there are few or difficult models to explain the recovery of drug use. The aim of this research was to propose an explanatory metamodel of the systemic relationships between individuals in the Narcotics Anonymous (NA) mutual help groups in the drug recovery process with a view of complexity and multi-referentiality using Group Dynamics, Cognitive Psychology, Social Networks and Semantic Networks of Oral Discourses. It is an applied research of qualitative-quantitative approach with descriptive objective evolving to propositive, that uses the single case study with multiple units of analysis. The locus encompassed the NA groups of the city of Salvador-BA, its documents, records, literature, and members' experience. Direct data of 123 people were collected through questionnaires, as well as through participant observation. Were cited 286 NA members. Analysis of the data found in the official NA documents indicates that their members begin to get high on the average age between 10 and 15 years. After an average use for 20 years, they enter NA and gradually adapt to a new cultural ecology. The NA group adopts norms and standards that, informally, are shared by most members. The central element is the presentation of a systemic metamodel about the recovery process. It was concluded that the studied social network has indications of topological characteristics of the free-of-scale type with the hubs playing an important role in the diffusion of new knowledge and behaviors that will make significant changes of attitudes in the new members, resulting in important improvements in the areas of quality of life.

A penological perspective on the handling of the drug offender

Ovens, Michelle 11 1900 (has links)
Drug policy and the treatment of drug offenders' is an area that receives much attention worldwide. Because of the authorities' apparent inability to deal with this form of crime, it has universally been deemed necessary to look generally at the punishment of this category of offender and specifically at alternative methods to deal with these perpetrators. An extensive study of drug treatment approaches and models used by various countries merely highlights and emphasises the need for the creation and implementation of a suitable treatment modality for drug offenders. Other countries do not and cannot offer solutions to South Africa's dilemma in the handling of its large offender population. It is for this reason that the researcher has selected workable aspects from various systems in a multidimensional and multidisciplinary management approach to the handling of drug offenders in the South African context. The researcher utilises certain components of the systems theory to describe the manner in which the criminal justice system processes drug offenders. For this purpose, the researcher uses the systems theory as a framework for the application of the drug model that takes place on all levels within the criminal justice system. The researcher aims to use existing drug policy to form the basis of the drug model, and sets structural and procedural guidelines for dealing with this category of offender. The researcher furthermore calls for the implementation of such a model. / Corrections Management / D.Litt. et Phil. (Penology)

Zkušenosti studentů středních škol a odborných učilišť s omamnými a psychotropními látkami na teritoriu města Plzně / Experience of secondary school students and vocational school students in the territory of the town Pilsen with narcotics and psychotropic drugs

KVÍDEROVÁ, Lenka January 2012 (has links)
I selected the topic "Experience of secondary school students and vocational school students in the territory of the town Pilsen with narcotics and psychotropic drugs" for my diploma thesis. Substances that change consciousness have been known throughout the history of mankind. Newer substances, helping individuals to improve their physical and psychical abilities, keep appearing. This reason resulted in an increased demand for such "miraculous" substances in the past years. Life conditions have significantly changed lately, life has become hurried and confusing; striving for money, power, success or admiration prevails. That is why people are forced to pretend that they can cope with stressful situations, when they have to mask any failure or insecurities by never ending search for new resources and possibilities that could help them to stand such situations. The Diploma thesis gives an overview of the well-known substances that are being abused nowadays and the classification of these addictive substances, the work also deals with health and social consequences of drug abuse and, finally yet importantly, provides information about the danger of drug abuse, causes of its development and possibilities of prevention of this problem not only at schools, but also in private lives of adolescents, who are the most susceptible group in today's world. This work also includes statistic surveys that were conducted by distinguished organisations within the territory of the Czech Republic and that were subsequently compared with my own questionnaire survey. In order to find out what experience do students have with narcotics and psychotropic substances, a questionnaire was compiled and distributed for completion among students of selected secondary schools and vocational schools in the territory of the town Pilsen. Although the results of the empiric part of the Diploma thesis proved that the students had experience with narcotics and psychotropic substances, most of the cases related just to experimenting with these addictive substances and only a small percentage of students abused drugs from a long-term perspective.

Freitas, Diego Gimenes Azevedo de January 2014 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / This research aims to demonstrate how the professional culture of police officers crowded in the State Department of Prevention and Suppression of Drug Trafficking (DENARC) of São Paulo, responsible for the investigation of crimes related to drugs in the capital, operates in the mode of action of these agents in their activities service, leading to the reproduction of social prejudices. It was developed through fieldwork with the implementation of semistructured, open interviews with 04 (four) police that body. The text uses as theoretical basis the concept of stigma, proposed by Goffman (1963), in order to understand the process of filtering and labeling accused made by the police. This work indicates that the discourse of DENARC the police tend to assume that poverty and marginalization are strong factors that lead people to involvement in drug trafficking. Thus, it is noted that the investigation carried out by police officers of this department is founded on cultural elements that requires preestablished concepts of the criminal profile. This has, in turn, a strong impact on crime tract in this case related to trafficking in narcotics, and leads to the possible reduction of respect for human and civil rights of an already marginalized section of society.

The use of the cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the son and its repercussions in the familiar relation

Renata Torres da Costa Mangueira 22 March 2005 (has links)
The fact of having a drug user in the family compromises its organization, interfering in the quality of its relations. The drug use revelation is a crucial moment in the relationships between the user and his relatives; all the further conduct will depend on how this moment has been. Not until recently have there been in Brazil studies of the relation between the Cannabis sativa users and their families. The increase of researches and the practice in this area may be another alternative to treating dependency, which confirms the relevance of our research. This paper aims generally at performing a study case of a familiy whose son is a user of Cannabis sativa (marijuana). More specifically it aims at: 1. analyzing how relatives deal with the use of Cannabis sativa by the son; 2. investigating how the user accepts the requests of his family about drug use; 3. studying what happens in this family, when the use of Cannabis sativa is revealed by the son. In the research, we had contact with one user at Eulâmpio Cordeiro Human Rehabilitation Center (CECRH) one institution for users and / or people dependent on psychoactive substances in the public health care system of the state of Pernambuco as well as with his relatives. The work was developed based on the General Systems Theory and used the semidirect interview aproach. The conclusions of our paper have shown that since the moment in which the revelation of drug use is understood by the family, the son starts to have a central role in the family relations. Matters of significant importance to this family and that had not been discussed so far, such as the falt that the user was born to substitute a sister who passed away precociously; the parents absence of care for the life of the son; the abundant use of alcoholic drinks by the family; the fathers and granfathers alcohol dependency; as well as the use of Cannabis sativa by the cousin, led to the search for a healthier life among the members of this family, which is intensily disfuncional in its systemic properties. We have concluded that family therapy is essential for the users family, so that this system can work properly again, thus, solving the differences and restoring the harmony among its members

Využití adiktologie v činnosti Probační a mediační služby / The usability of addictology in the activity of Probation and mediation service

Staněk, Pavel January 2020 (has links)
Background: The Probation and Mediation Service plays an essential role in the execution of alternative sanctions for offenders who are often addictive users. During my practice I was intrigued by the scope and breadth of activities and the necessary knowledge of probation workers. Objectives: The aim of the thesis was describing the possibilities of using addictological knowledge and specialization of probation officers to work with clients using narcotic and psychotropic substances and to compare possible changes compared to the situation described by Gabrhelíková in her dissertation in 2010. Sample: The research sample consisted of probation officers and assistants of the Probation and Mediation Service Prague; 36 respondents were participated in the research. Methods: The research methods were a questionnaire survey, semi-structured interviews and also a case report of the Probation and Mediation Service client. The analysis of available documentation was used in the case report. Ethical principles were observed. Results: Surveys showed that the number of users of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances among clients continues to increase. Official statistics underestimate this situation. Probation workers positively perceive the contribution of addictological knowledge to their client work while...

Central Asian Security: With a Focus on Kazakhstan

Bragg, Marcus 01 May 2014 (has links)
This work focuses on the influence of terror, extremism, trafficking and corruption on the regional security of Central Asia, with a particular emphasis on Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan is regarded as the most stable and financially developed state in Central Asia, yet domestic and regional stability are threatened by the rise in extremism, narcotics trafficking, institutional corruption and acts of terrorism. The challenges of trafficking and extremism within the region originated from outside of Central Asia. Foreign organizations and ideologies are significant actors in progression of regional instability. Government response to these challenges can perpetuate or stymie the aforementioned threats to regional security. Repressive regimes inadvertently contribute to the propaganda of the non-state foes. A prominent solution is the international program referred to as border management. This program aims to support border security while also promoting economic growth and ensuring the protection of human rights. Improved borders promotes regional security, economic growth can potentially undermine the growth of corruption and human rights protection can undermine a large part of extremist propaganda.
