The Threshold between Life and Death : An Examination of Near Death Experiences

Jarl, Zandra January 2009 (has links)

In studies on Near Death Experiences (NDE) data has been collected by using the recently developed scaling methods, the scale developed by Ring and the Greyson NDE Scale. In order to illustrate the problems in the empirical study of NDEs, my intention is to compare the Greyson NDE-scale with the most common theories on NDEs. After series of modifications the final scale consisted of a questionnaire consisting of sixteen different questions, that yielded into four different areas, Cognitive components, Emotional components, Paranormal components, and Transcendental components.

In the end the theory that has the most likely possibility to explain NDEs in the future must be the Dying Brain theory, but one should not disclose the different features of the Afterlife theory (but without the origin explanation).

Att överleva ett hjärtstopp; : en litteraturbaserad studie om vuxna personers erfarenheter / To survive a cardiac arrest; : A study based on scientific studies of adult people’s experiences

Skoglund, Ida, Mossberg Jönsson, Helena January 2017 (has links)
Background: Every year 10,000 people in Sweden suffer from a cardiac arrest. The chance to survive increases and also the lifespan. Having suffered a cardiac arrest means a change in everyday life, both emotionally and physically. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe adult people’s experiences after surviving a cardiac arrest. Method: A qualitative literature-based study. An analysis of nine qualitative articles was carried out. Results: Three main themes emerged; near death-experience, a changed body and to get a functioning everyday. The results showed that life after the cardiac arrest meant a major transformation. To suffer a near-death experience affected the people and there was a reprioritisations of everyday life. It was found that bodily changes created an insecurity and it was perceived as difficulty when the energy was not enough. Conclusion: People who survived a cardiac arrest are in need of support from the health care.

As experiências de quase-morte como Psicagogia : ou o amor como princípio da Pedagogia

Azevedo, Rodrigo de Oliveira January 2018 (has links)
In the present thesis, linked to the Foucaultian Studies, I propose to think about Education and Pedagogy trying to put ourselves externally in these fields. In it, I argue that the references that advocate the spiritual nature of near-death experiences (NDEs) allow us to characterize these phenomena as psychagogical interventions that, in promoting the re-signification of life, aim to transform people's way of being so that they live oriented by love. The notion of psychagogy is the most important theoretical element of the present research. I conceive psychagogy as the process of transmitting a truth whereby a subject seeks to change the way of being of he or she is addressed. The conception of pastoral power, understood as a technique of direction that turns to the one that must lead the people and each individual to salvation, is constituted as another relevant theoretical component for the development of this work. From my analyzes, I understand that the love on which the psychagogical relations are sustained is identified with that peculiar to the Socratic-Platonic doctrine. In order to carry out the research, I have analyzed texts (books, articles and electronic journals) by Brazilian and foreign authors that conceive NDEs as spiritual phenomena and other works that allow us to describe some of the conditions of possibility for the emergence of the field of Spirituality and Health (SH) and discourses on NDEs. In the first chapter, in carrying out a study of genealogical inspiration, I suggest that the field of SH and discourses on NDEs find in the "biological imperative" proper of our time an important emergency condition. I dedicate the second chapter to describe the discursive elements that characterize the NDEs as spiritual phenomena and to present the field of knowledge in which those elements are inserted. Finally, in the third chapter, I explain the reasons that led me to characterize NDEs as psychagogical interventions that take the form of pastoral relationships.

Impact of an Online Education Program on Counselors' Knowledge and Attitudes about Near-Death Experiences

Loseu, Saharnaz 05 1900 (has links)
An estimated 15 million people in the US have had a near‐death experience (NDE), an experience of usually lucid consciousness during a close brush with death. Following an NDE, experiencers (NDErs) sometimes feel challenged and seek counseling to integrate the experience into their subsequent lives. They have reported psychologically harmful experiences disclosing their NDEs to healthcare professionals, including counselors. Counselors' knowledge and attitude about NDEs appear to be critical variables in their ability to uphold the ethical imperative to do no harm to clients. The recent development of a psychometrically sound instrument to assess these variables, coupled with online availability of a three-part NDE educational program for health professionals, made possible for the first time a large‐scale pre‐post study of the effect of the program on counselors' knowledge and attitude about NDEs. Participants were 212 licensed professional counselors (LPCs) aged 23 to 71 years old (M = 44.93, SD = 12.69); sex self-identified as 12.3% male, 87.3% female, and .5% other; racially/ethnically self-identified as 84% White and 17% non-White and as 6.6% Latino-Hispanic and 92.5% non-Latino/Hispanic; and representing four regions of the US. Results revealed that, compared to control group, composed of LPCs who completed topically unrelated online programs (n = 112), those who completed the NDE program (n = 100) showed significantly more accurate knowledge and more positive attitude about NDEs. Participants also overwhelmingly expressed enjoyment of the programs. These results support the use of online training to increase counselors' knowledge and improve their attitude about NDEs so they can provide clinically and ethically sound treatment to NDErs. Limitations of the study and future research are addressed.

Tracing afterlife : A comparative study of visionary motifs in the Apocalypse of Paul, near-death experiences and Karl Rahner’s theology of death and dying

Sterner, Fredrik January 2023 (has links)
This essay aims to explore the tradition of visionary experience as expressed through the 4th century apocryphal text The Apocalypse of Paul. Emerging motifs from The Apocalypse of Paul is studied alongside those from the 1979 study on near-death experience, To die is gain, by German Lutheran priest Johann Christoph Hampe. A general enquiry it seeks to answer is; are the motifs in The Apocalypse of Paul of contemporary relevance, as testimony of neardeath experience? Further, this thesis aims to study possible correlations of emerging patterns through the theology of death and afterlife developed by the late Karl Rahner, as an attempt to re-cast traditional eschatological teachings of the church to modern sensibilities. Basic narrative characteristics in The Apocalypse of Paul is put in relation to the interpretation of NDE-characteristics in To die is gain. Correlations and/or discrepancies are put in relation to the eschatological thought of Karl Rahner. The study is structured around a disposition of The Apocalypse of Paul divided in seven subgroups. Each subgroup is analysed using Hampes’ tripartite division of the NDE-phenomenon.Further, granted the grouping based on Hampes’ systemisation, each section will provide a basis for study of Rahnerian theology of dying.

Confronting mortality: faith and meaning across cultures

Paulson, S., Kellehear, Allan, Kripal, J.J., Leary, L. January 2014 (has links)
No / Despite advances in technology and medicine, death itself remains an immutable certainty. Indeed, the acceptance and understanding of our mortality are among the enduring metaphysical challenges that have confronted human beings from the beginning of time. How have we sought to cope with the inevitability of our mortality? How do various cultural and social representations of mortality shape and influence the way in which we understand and approach death? To what extent do personal beliefs and convictions about the meaning of life or the notion of an afterlife affect how we perceive and experience the process of death and dying? Steve Paulson, executive producer and host of To the Best of Our Knowledge, moderated a discussion on death, dying, and what lies beyond that included psychologist Lani Leary, professor of philosophy and religion Jeffrey J. Kripal, and sociologist Allan Kellehear. The following is an edited transcript of the discussion that occurred February 5, 7:00-8:30 pm, at the New York Academy of Sciences in New York City.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Beatriz Ferrara Carunchio.pdf: 1789587 bytes, checksum: 02b52956206c5ee3ff100f009b1ee306 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-11-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / Near-Death Experience (NDE) is a mystical experience that happens during or near of clinical death. During NDE, one experiences phenomena as out of body experience, meetings with supernatural agents, travels through a transcendent reality or even seeing what is happening around the body. The aim of this study is to verify if there is any correlation between mystical experience and NDE. We suggest that there is correlation, and maybe this is the responsible for initiate changes in perception and meaning one sees in life. About the method, we used two scales: Hood‟s Mysticism Scale (M Scale) and Greyson‟s NDE Scale. We had 350 valid answers (N=350). 14% had experienced NDE, 13% had already been in risk of death, but hadn‟t experienced NDE, and 73% had never been in risk of death. The statistical analysis was made with SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Factor 3 had statistical significance (p=0,01) for both the groups that had been in risk of death. According to correlational analysis, the higher scores in Greyson‟s NDE Scale, the bigger scores in Factor 3 of Hood‟s M Scale. We concluded that there is correlation between NDE and introvertive mysticism / Experiência de Quase Morte (EQM) é uma experiência mística que ocorre durante ou próximo da morte clínica.
