Encounters with the ineffable in selected artworks by Anish Kapoor and Karel Nel

A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Fine Arts by Dissertation / In this research I examine how the ineffable is addressed and explored in selected artworks by British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor (b 1954) and South African artist Karel Nel (b 1955). I introduce the notion of the ineffable, described as that which is too great or profound to be expressed in words; the ungraspable, indescribable, indefinable. It is often linked to the spiritual, the fluid and unfixed, the transcendent and the notion of the revelatory. I consider it alongside related terms such as the sublime, the numinous, the mystical etc. In examining how it can be seen to link to artists’ aesthetic pursuits, I briefly consider the idea of the shamanistic role of the artist in providing a ‘transformative event’ of bringing the invisible into visible form. My primary focus is on how both Kapoor and Nel can be seen to use their chosen materials, forms, and means of display to engage with ideas that relate to the metaphysical and allude to the intuitive and the spiritual. Their interest in Buddhist philosophy and the notion of reconciliation of opposites as well as their exploration of space and the idea of the immaterial becoming object is related to my discussion of their artworks in terms of evoking the ineffable. Kapoor's biomorphic sculptural forms covered in powder pigments, examples of his reflective stainless steel sculptures and two recent sitespecific installation artworks using smoke and water are closely examined as are examples of Nel's two-dimensional drawings using pastels, powdered earth pigments, carboniferous salts and dust and two of his site-specific installation artworks involving the use of water and refracted/reflected light. I finally discuss my own creative work in relation to the above as presented in my exhibition titled Ātmān / MT2016

The narrative and the commemorative in the ceramic vessels of Hylton Nel, Wonderboy Nxumalo, Grayson Perry

This study explores the narrative and the commemorative aspect of the contemporary ceramic vessel. It examines the context of the narrative and the commemorative and how it manifests in the works of Grayson Perry, Wonderboy Nxumalo and Hylton Nel. I have tended to take an approach that is Post Modernist and deconstructive which attempts to be inclusive. The narrative and the commemorative are explored and defined within the discourse of literary theory. Hence the concept of memory, history, time, narrative structure and semiotics are evident within these definitions. The relationship between the image and text is also explored and how the artist exploits this narrative device. The contemporary vessel is used within the narrative in the appropriation of ceramic tradition and is explored in the works of these artists. Futhermore these traditions are subverted and manipulated in order to convey the narrative, whose content is both private and collective and extends and transgresses the confines of societal boundaries. It will be demonstrated how each of the artists convey their own dialogue that is driven by their own personal histories. The chapters therefore explore thematically, many aspects of the narratives, all of which are relevant to the artists: · The Concept of the Child · The Didactic Nature of the Narrative. · Narrative, Genre and sign. · Sexuality, Transgression and Queer Politics. · Recalling the Past; History and Nostalgia. I n the final chapter I explore my own work from the required exhibition. Object /Vessel: Narratives of Containment. The subject of the narrative is explored within the context of the ceramic vessel and the mixed media drawing. Many of the aspects of the narrative explored in this study have influenced my own work, in particular the concept of memory, nostalgia and the past.

Questa tesi si è concentrata sullo studio della traduzione degli elementi culturospecifici noti come realia dallo svedese all'italiano sulla base del quadro teorico degli studi di traduzione. Lo studio dei realia è importante poiché questi elementi senza corrispondenza diretta nella lingua di arrivo pongono una sfida nella resa e talvolta risultano anche difficili da distinguere in un testo. Dati i moltissimi termini specifici inerenti alla pesca e che rientrano nella categoria delle cosiddette lingue specialistiche/settoriali, si è eseguita un’analisi simile relativa anche  ad essi. La terza parte della tesi studia la gestione delle citazioni e i loro riferimenti e come queste sono state alterate a causa del cosiddetto lettore modello e dell’appartenenza linguistica delle due lingue di proto e metatesto.   L'ipotesi iniziale è stata che la traduzione dei realia fosse orientata verso la cultura di arrivo, l’accettabilità, mentre per i termini relativi alla pesca le ipotesi erano due. Da un lato che si potesse supporre una traduzione tendente verso l’adeguatezza, con un orientamento verso il prototesto svedese, soprattutto per due motivi.  Il primo considerando il significato  della parola “terminologia” e il secondo in riferimento alle moltissime esplicitazioni presenti nel prototesto che potrebbero bilanciare il fatto che la terminologia inerente alla pesca rientra nella categoria di lingue settoriali o/e specialistiche. Dall’altro lato, in questo caso specifico si tratta di una lingua specialistica/settoriale poco formalizzata espressa con una miscela tra la lingua standard e il dialetto. Altri aspetti erano la forma del testo e il lettore modello. Questi fattori sono la base per l’alternativa ipotesi che spinge invece verso l’accettabilità. Relativamente alla gestione delle citazioni e dei riferimenti ci si aspettava una prevalenza di trascrizioni con delle eventuali esplicitazioni nella lingua di arrivo. Un’altra ipotesi è stata che la traduzione della parte saggistica del libro fosse più tendente verso l'adeguatezza che verso l'accettabilità.  L'analisi si basa sulla lettura parallela dell'originale svedese "Ålevangeliet" di Patrik Svensson e della traduzione italiana "Nel segno dell'anguilla" di Monica Corbetta, entrambi del 2019. Durante la lettura dei testi, sono stati raccolti sia i realia che i termini inerenti alla pesca, che sono stati poi organizzati, classificati e analizzati secondo lo schema e la teoria descritti da Osimo (2011), con qualche modifica ad hoc. Le citazioni e i loro riferimenti sono stati raccolti e confrontati con il materiale di riferimento, per poi essere analizzati in modo qualitativo con lo scopo di identificare la strategia di traduzione scelta ed eventuali tendenze.  L'analisi ha confermato che la traduzione sia dei realia che dei termini è orientata verso la cultura del lettore del metatesto, optando per una traduzione accettabile, dove accettabile si riferisce all'uso di termini e parole più generali e un orientamento verso la cultura di arrivo. Il confronto tra le parti autobiografiche e saggistiche del libro mostra un tasso leggermente maggiore dell'uso di omologhi locali nella parte autobiografica del libro, sebbene questa strategia sia stata usata con parsimonia. Lo studio rileva che il tema era di uguale importanza nella traduzione italiana così come la scelta del linguaggio e il registro sebbene il contenuto di questi ultimi siano alterati. L'analisi della gestione illustra come le origini diverse delle lingue di proto e metatesto, una germanica e una romanza, hanno influenzato la traduzione.  La tesi illustra l'importanza di una conoscenza della lingua-cultura non solo della lingua di partenza e di arrivo, ma anche di qualsiasi lingua specialistica/settoriale, dove l'insensibilità può altrimenti contribuire a traduzioni ambigue. / The focus of this thesis is the study of the translation of the cultural-specific elements known as realia from Swedish to Italian based on the theoretical framework of translation studies. Realia are interesting to study due to the fact that they often lack correspondence in the target language and sometimes are even hard to distinguish in a text, hence presenting a challenge for translators. Due to the many specific terms with regards to fishing and to the fact that these fall into the category of the so called specialistic or sectorial languages, a similar examination has been performed on the translation of these terms. The third part of the thesis studies the translation of the quotations from the vast reference material in question and how these have been altered due to the so-called model reader and the two languages’ different origins.  The initial hypothesis was that the Italian translation of the realia would be orientated towards the target culture, referred to as acceptability, whereas the terms related to fishing as well as the quotations were initially presumed being oriented towards the source culture and the Swedish original, also known as adequacy[meaning literally]. One also assumed that the translation of the essay part of the book would possibly tend more towards adequacy rather than acceptability.  The analysis is based on the parallel reading of the Swedish original “Ålevangeliet” written by Patrik Svensson and its Italian translation “Nel segno dell’anguilla” by Monica Corbetta in 2019. Whilst reading the books, the realia were collected, then organised and categorised based on the structure described by (Osimo, 2011, p. 112). The terms related to the categories “fishing” and “fishing eels” were also collected and treated in a similar way to the realia. The theory on translation strategies described by Osimo was adapted and used in order to analyse both the realia and the terms in question. All quotations and references were collected, compared to the reference material and then analysed in a qualitative way and examined for patterns and trends with regards to the translation.  The analysis shows that the translation of both the realia and the terms is orientated in order to accommodate the target culture, opting for an acceptable translation, where acceptable refers to the use of more general terms and words than the source text. The comparison between the autobiographical and essay parts of the book shows a somewhat increased rate in the use of local equivalent words (omologhi locali) in the autobiographical part of the book, although this strategy has been used sparingly.  The study finds that the theme was of equal importance in the Italian translation as well as the choice of vocabulary and linguistic register, although the content of the latter two had been altered in the Italian translation, mainly due to the model reader. The analysis of the translation of the quotations and references outlines the impact caused by the different origins of the languages, where Swedish is part of the Germanic branch and Italian the Romance branch, and their effect on the translation.  The thesis illustrates the importance of insight not only in the language-culture of the source language, but also in any specialistic/sectorial language as the insensitivity thereof could contribute to less fortunate translations of both realia, terms and other words.

M?todo: A amostra foi constitu?da por 18 punhos em 15 pacientes randomizados em dois grupos; grupo interven??o (ultrassom) e grupo controle. Todos os pacientes foram avaliados no per?odo pr?-operat?rio e ap?s 20 sess?es de fisioterapia e os seguintes par?metros foram considerados: for?a de preens?o palmar e for?a de pin?a (com dinam?metro JAMAR), sensibilidade com monofilamentos de Semmes-Weinstein, Escala An?logo Visual, Lat?ncia Motora Distal (ms) e Velocidade de condu??o sensorial do nervo mediano(m/s). Resultados: O coeficiente de varia??o (CV) das for?as de preens?o e pin?a dos grupos ultrassom e controle foram, respectivamente, 22,8% e 28,3%. Desta forma, n?o houve diferen?a estatisticamente significativa entre os dois coeficientes (p= 0, 391). Houve diferen?a estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos somente em rela??o ? for?a de pin?a dupla (p= 0, 006). O grupo ultrassom aumentou significamente mais a for?a de pin?a dupla quando comparado ao grupo controle. Nas demais vari?veis, a diferen?a entre os grupos n?o foi estatisticamente significativa. Conclus?o: Os resultados deste estudo sugerem que a aplica??o do ultrassom terap?utico com os par?metros empregados (freq??ncia de 3 MHz, intensidade de 0,8 W/cm, no modo pulsado 1:5 (20%), dura??o de 4 minutos) mostrou-se efetivo quando comparados intra-grupo. N?o evidenciando ao final da an?lise das demais vari?veis diferen?as estatisticamente significantes, quando comparamos as duas metodologias de tratamento.

O presente trabalho se propõe a analisar de maneira crítica a inatividade das partes através da aproximação das posições assumidas por autor e réu em nosso processo de conhecimento. A atenção se volta para a inatividade das partes no que tange aos principais atos de postulação: demanda inicial e a resposta. A principal indagação que pretendemos responder é se o tratamento da inatividade das partes, nesse aspecto, pode ser considerado anti-isonômico. Partindo dessa premissa, procuraremos verificar em que medida a inatividade do autor em impulsionar o processo e a inatividade do réu em responder, poderiam ser tratadas de uma maneira mais uniforme. Visando sempre proporcionar uma análise crítica de nosso sistema, este trabalho apresenta outros dois sistemas em que o tratamento da inatividade das partes pode ser considerado isonômico: o italiano e o alemão. O estudo comparado de ambos será essencial para reforçar a tese defendida nesse trabalho e para sugestões de tratamento de lege ferenda da inatividade em nosso processo. / Nostra ricerca è destinata ad analizzare criticamente linattività delle parti, assumendo che lattore e il convenuto si riscontrano in condizione di parità nel processo. Lapproccio si volta allinattività rispeto ai principali atti processuali delle parti: la domanda e la risposta. La questione che si voglia rispondere è questa: il nostro sistema processuale, in questo senso, può considerarsi contrario alluguaglianza tra le parti? Assumendo questa premessa, vorremo dimostrare in che senso linattività dellattore nel dare impulso al processo e linattività del convenuto nel rispondere pottrebbero essere oggetto di uno regolamento più uniforme. Verso unanalisi critica del nostro sistema processuale, forniremo lesposizione di due sistemi nei quali linattività delle parti possono essere considerata uguale: litaliano ed il tedesco. Lapproccio comparato degli entrambe sistemi sarà importante per rafforzare la tesi affermata in questo lavoro e anche per suggestioni di uno regolamento de lege ferenda per linattività delle parti nel nostro processo.

Thesis (MA) -- Stellenbosch University, 1998. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this thesis the techniques of defamiliarisation in Gert Vlok Nel's Om te lewe is onnatuurlik (1993) are investigated, especially with the aid of the Russian Formalist concept ostranenie. The introductory chapter expounds the theoretical basis. With reference to some reviews the question is investigated whether the volume can be regarded as worker poetry. After this follows an explanation of the concept ostranenie as understood by the Formalists, especially Victor Shklovsky, and of the concept Verfremdungseffekt as formulated by Bertolt Brecht. These concepts are then compared with the postmodemist notion of de-naturalization as used by, for example, Linda Hutcheon. In addition to Formalist theory other theories will be used in an eclectic fashion: semiostructuralism (Mikhail Bakhtin and Michael Riffaterre), reception theory (Wolfgang Iser) and psychoanalysis (Harold Bloom). Because om te lewe is onnatuurlik was created in postmodemity, the theoretical approach is also predominantly of a poetmodern nature. In the practical part of the thesis seven poems are discussed in order to highlight the principal techniques of defamiliarisation in each one: the use of ellipses and parody ("die dag toe hulle vir Donkie Viviers"); selfreflexivity and metafidional elements (desember & see"); childlike focalisation and register (soeklig" and "boggellug"); typographical experimentation ("landskap"); spatial relativation ("Rita" and "hillside") and retardation ("hillside"). / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie tesis word ondersoek ingestel na die vervreemdingstegnieke in Gert Vlok Nel se bundel om te lewe is onnatuurlik (1993), veral met behulp van die Russiese Formalistiese teorie oor die begrip ostranenie. Die inleidende hoofstuk hied 'n uiteensetting van die teoretiese hegrollding. Met verwysing na enkele resensies word daar eerstens ondersoek of die bundel as werkerspoosie beskou kan word. Hierna volg 'n uiteensetting van die konsep ostranenie soos gehanteer deur die Formaliste, veral Viktor Sklovsky, en van die konsep Verfremdungseffekt, soos geformuleer deur Bertolt Brecht. As teoretiese raamwerk word daar van die teoloog/letterkundige Wesley Kort, die letterkundige/sosioloog Irma du Plessis en die radikale geograaf David Harvey se werk gebruik gemaak. Kwessies soos die (i) wisselwerking tussen omvattende, sosiale en intieme ruimtes deur narratiewe ruimtelikheid in poësie, (ii) die onstandvastigheid van die onderskeid tussen private en openbare ruimtes en (iii) verkillende vorms van ruimtelikheid, soos absolute, relatiewe en relasionele ruimtes, asook materiële ruimte, gerepresenteerde ruimte en ruimtes van representasie kom aan die bod. Daar word aangevoer dat Gert Vlok Nel se bewustelike plasing van homself as randfiguurdigter binne die Afrikaanse literêre sisteem as vorm van morele agentskap gesien kan word. The works of theologian/literary theorist Wesley Kort, literary theorist/sociologist Irma du Plessis and radical geographer David Harvey are used as theoretical framing. Matters such as (i) the interplay between encompassing, social and intimate spaces through narrative spatiality in poetry, (ii) flawed distinctions between private and public space, and (iii) different forms of spatiality, such as absolute, relative and relational space, as well as material space, represented space and spaces of representation are explored. It is argued that Gert Vlok Nel’s conscious positioning of himself as poetic outsider within the Afrikaans literary system can be seen as a form of moral agency. Furthermore, it is pointed out that a reading of om te lewe is onnatuurlik in its entirety, as family chronicle, destabilises the distinction between private and public spaces where violence and trauma occur, thereby recasting political power as questions of personal ethics. Finally it is argued that, although the narrator-poet in die collection (“Gert”, or “Gertjie”) seems to lack agency, the peculiar spatio-temporal placing of the narrator-poet nevertheless opens up room for the possibility of agency and by doing this, challenges the idea of a splintered subject. This academic essay is related to the creative part of this thesis, a collection of poems titled Veelvuldige gebruike vir huishoudelike toestelle [“Multiple uses for domestic appliances”], in which household space is used as a vantage point from which to interrogate issues such as moral responsibility, creative complicity, postcolonial masculinities, social change and trauma.
