Performance Modelling of Database Designs using a Queueing Networks Approach. An investigation in the performance modelling and evaluation of detailed database designs using queueing network models.

Databases form the common component of many software systems, including mission critical transaction processing systems and multi-tier Internet applications. There is a large body of research in the performance of database management system components, while studies of overall database system performance have been limited. Moreover, performance models specifically targeted at the database design have not been extensively studied. This thesis attempts to address this concern by proposing a performance evaluation method for database designs based on queueing network models. The method is targeted at designs of large databases in which I/O is the dominant cost factor. The database design queueing network performance model is suitable in providing what if comparisons of database designs before database system implementation. A formal specification that captures the essential database design features while keeping the performance model sufficiently simple is presented. Furthermore, the simplicity of the modelling algorithms permits the direct mapping between database design entities and queueing network models. This affords for a more applicable performance model that provides relevant feedback to database designers and can be straightforwardly integrated into early database design development phases. The accuracy of the modelling technique is validated by modelling an open source implementation of the TPC-C benchmark. The contribution of this thesis is considered to be significant in that the majority of performance evaluation models for database systems target capacity planning or overall system properties, with limited work in detailed database transaction processing and behaviour. In addition, this work is deemed to be an improvement over previous methodologies in that the transaction is modelled at a finer granularity, and that the database design queueing network model provides for the explicit representation of active database rules and referential integrity constraints. / Iqra Foundation

Customer Accounting in Business Networks

The constellation of the customer base has implications for the company’s future survivability. Within the business-to-business markets, the customer relationships are characterized by technical and organizational interfaces. Understanding the customer relationships and using customer accounting can provide information about how to prioritize among the customers in order to improve short-term and long-term profitability. The framework by Lind and Strömsten (2006) where different customer accounting techniques are related to a typology over customer relationships is evaluated and further elaborated on in this thesis. The empirical findings both confirm the reasoning behind the framework and cause development potential. The relation of customer accounting techniques to different types of customer relationships is mainly confirmed by the study. Regarding the customer typology, the empirical findings bring forth proposed improvements; a grading of the technical and organizational interfaces of the customer relationship types is suggested.

The dissolution process of a business relationship:a case study from tailored software business

Abstract This research aims at developing theory about the dissolution process of business-to-business relationships in tailored software context. Although dissolving business relationships can be viewed as one of the essential themes of marketing, the existing research on dissolution does not provide us with a holistic picture of the dissolution as a process. This research builds an empirically-grounded model of the business relationship dissolution process. First, a theoretical, tentative model of the process of business relationship dissolution is built. Second, empirical knowledge is acquired from a case study of business relationship dissolution in a software context. The case study data has been collected from various sources, from both seller and buyer organisations as well as network actors, through interviews and also from other written and oral sources in order to ensure triangulation. Third, the findings of the case study are compared to the tentative process model and the model is adjusted accordingly, thus developing the empirically-grounded process model. The process model includes three elements: the nature of the relationship, the factors influencing its dissolution, and the dissolution process. It incorporates both the time dimension and the multiplicity of the actors (individuals, companies, other relationships) involved into the model. The nature of the relationship is classified (terminal, continuous, episodic) as are the influencing factors and events (predisposing, precipitating and attenuating). The dissolution process is modelled by using stages, which describe the different action and time periods of the process, and by using levels, which describe the different actors who bring the process about. Six stages are distinguished: the communication stage, consideration stage, disengagement stage, enabling stage, restoration stage, and sensemaking / aftermath stage. The concept of stage is used to divide the complex process into more comprehensible periods and to emphasise that in each stage, managers' actions differ. The dissolution process does not always proceed through all the stages, nor have the stages any particular order.

Public-private partnerships as a strategy for successful expansion in emerging markets? : A case study of the motives, means and outcomes of Swedish MNEs engagement in public-private partnerships in emerging markets

While both the concept of Private-Public Partnerships and the research on the topic is not new, PPPs from a market expansion perspective has not been covered to any notable extent, something this thesis aims to rectify. With the importance of relationships in business in emerging markets, the Institutional Network Approach serves as the backdrop for the study, highlighting the interplay between MNE and surrounding institutions. Through three case studies of Swedish MNEs active in PPP-projects in emerging markets, the aim is to develop a model suitable for analyzing MNE engagements in PPP-projects, but also to see if the gains from PPP engagements can constitute a feasible emerging market expansion tool.   The outcome of the study revealed that the studied MNEs primarily sought legitimacy and credibility in their projects, goals which according to MNEs also were acquired, and that the new model to a large extent captured aspects that were identified as important in the firms’ reports from the projects. It was concluded that in order for the PPP to serve as reliable market expansion tool, the firm has to be of MNE-size in terms of resources and ambitions, because smaller firms would struggle to be awarded, or handle, PPP-projects of this size. Previously stated credibility and legitimacy (from the CSR-aspects of the PPP), as well as the long-term collaboration resulting in solid relationships between MNE and institutions, are other benefits.

Eco-labelling of houses and the concept of sustainable housing : A comparative study of the UK and Sweden

<p>The aim with this study is to evaluate if standardization of sustainable housing is a practical solution to address the objectives/reach the goals of sustainable housing. The point of departure is that eco-labelling of houses is a way to put sustainable housing into practice. The Nordic Swan criteria for small houses and the UK Code for Sustainable Homes are two recently developed schemes for sustainable construction and design. These two labelling systems are chosen as case studies in order to compare and examine the practice of sustainable housing. How can the goals of sustainable housing be met in the form of eco- labelling? What are the benefits and obstacles/limitations for the cases to be effective and sustainable?  What can explain differences between the two cases? And is the function and organisation of the cases best explained by sustainable development ideas or ecological modernization?  It is suggested in the view of path dependency theory that the UK’s and Sweden’s decisions based on their expectations concerning development of the EU flower has made their respective eco-labelling of houses to have different organisational structure. The Code as a sector-specific label has the advantage, compared to the Swan, of being able to change its structure depending on the needs of pressure in the network of government, business and consumers.  The Code has several criteria concerning sustainable living besides criteria concerning environmental construction of the house and can therefore be considered as part of the sustainable development discourse.</p>

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the activities of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, one of the German political foundations in Turkey, within the context of the network governance approach. Several tools within this approach are used as heuristic devices to elaborate the relationships of the KAS in the Turkish political terrain. Among these tools, the concept of informality provides a crucial insight to explore the activities of the KAS. This thesis argues that the weight of informal, non-governmental mechanisms in policy-making processes is on the rise in Turkey and the KAS plays an important role in the establishment of such mechanisms. However, though the rise of these mechanisms has the potential to open up opportunies for participation in policy-making processes, in practice, partnerships established by the KAS hinder equal and broad-based participation since they are based on ideological commonality and thus, closed to outside.
