Revisiting New Babylon : the making and unmaking of a nomadic myth

McGowan, Jérémie Michael January 2011 (has links)
This thesis revisits Constant’s New Babylon (about 1956-1974). Turning to theories of primitivism and, in particular, Christopher L. Miller’s critical reading of ‘the nomad’ found in Gilles Deleuze’s and Félix Guattari’s A Thousand Plateaus (1980), I use previously published and unconsidered archival materials alike to demonstrate the importance of Romani to Constant’s original work and thinking on New Babylon. Positioning these materials against a selection of dominant claims, reference points and images now circulating in established New Babylon and Situationist International scholarship, I argue that Constant’s daily life and artistic practice, together with key moments in the development and public display of his project, are framed by references to, yearnings for and personal dealings with Romani, both real and imagined. Questioning contemporary theorisations of nomadism through a consideration of who travels and why, I advocate for a greater awareness of and sensitivity to the historical conditions that produce particular forms of movement. New Babylon and Romani are inextricably intertwined: to forget the one is to misunderstand, and misrepresent, the other.

Supersuperfícies: New Babylon (Constant Nieuwenhuys e Internacional Situacionista, 1958-74) e Gli Atti Fondamentali (Superstudio, 1972-73). O pensamento utópico como parte da cultura arquitetônica no pós-guerra europeu / Supersurfaces: New Babylon (Constant Nieuwenhuys and Situationist Internacional, 1958-74) and Gli Atti Fondamentali (Superstudio, 1972-73). Utopian tought inside architectural culture during the post-war years

Miyada, Paulo Kiyoshi Abreu 30 April 2013 (has links)
The object of the present dissertation is the utopian content of two projects developed from 1958 to 1974: New Babylon (Constant Nieuwenhuys and Situationist Internacional, 1956-74) and Gli Atti Fondamentali (Superstudio, 1972-73). This research considers the cultural and political debate contemporary to that time as a parameter for organizing a comparative scheme. To the light of a contemporary discussion of utopia, these projects reveal themselves as critical and speculative enterprises based on proposing spatial and social models for the future. They consist of urban ideals that relate with fundamental changes of the urbanization paradigm during the post-war years. Both yearn for an urban model in which automate infrastructures homogeneously provide abundant resources to a society that is free from both labor and private property.

New Babylon and Brasilia in the years of 1950 and 1960.

Vianna, Marina Freire da Cunha 23 September 2011 (has links)
A essas indagações procuramos oferecer alguns caminhos. / This masters thesis approaches the relationship between architecture, art, city and utopia in the years 1950 and 1960 from the exercise of mutual comparison of two conceptions of the city raised in this time interval. The new city, Brasilia, designed by Brazilian architect Lucio Costa to be the modern capital of Brazil and the fictional city, New Babylon, created by Dutch artist Constant Nieuwenhuys as a refusal to existing models of cities. What are the possible relationships between them? What they say about the years in question? The thesis seeks to offer some guidelines to these questions.
