Analytic Functions with Real Boundary Values in Smirnov Classes EpDe Castro, Lisa 01 January 2013 (has links)
This thesis concerns the classes of analytic functions on bounded, n-connected domains known as the Smirnov classes Ep, where p > 0. Functions in these classes satisfy a certain growth condition and have a relationship to the more well known classes of functions known as the Hardy classes Hp. In this thesis I will show how the geometry of a given domain will determine the existence of non-constant analytic functions in Smirnov classes that possess real boundary values. This is a phenomenon that does not occur among functions in the Hardy classes.
The preliminary and background information is given in Chapters 1 and 3 while the main results of this thesis are presented in Chapters 2 and 4. In Chapter 2, I will consider the case of the simply connected domain and the boundary characteristics that allow non-constant analytic functions with real boundary values in certain Smirnov classes. Chapter 4 explores the case of an n-connected domain and the sufficient conditions for which the aforementioned functions exist. In Chapter 5, I will discuss how my results for simply connected domains extend Neuwirth-Newman's Theorem and finish with an open problem for n-connected domains.

The religious crisis in the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins.Giles, Roy James 31 January 2003 (has links)
Gerard Manley Hopkins produced poetry in the Victorian era which was noted for its originality of syntax and form. The essence underlying a large body of his poetry was his Catholic religion. His early religious poetry utilized nature-based metaphors to express his love of Christ and trace the immanence of God within nature. He borrowed heavily from the aesthetics of Pater and the philosophy of Duns Scotus. The dissertation explores these early influences and assesses their contribution to the formation of a unique religious interpretation of life and the formulation of an aesthetic congruent with this religion. The dissertation dissects early symptoms of religious doubt within his poetry and finally analyses his `Terrible Sonnet' phase in detail to ascertain whether the crisis so often described as occurring during this period was religious or merely reflected a loss of creative ability. / English Studies / MA (English)

攻擊行為控制機制之探討 / Exploring the Control Mechanism of Aggressive Behaviors李怡青, Lee, I-Ching Unknown Date (has links)
Based on a behavioral activation mechanism and two behavioral inhibition mechanisms, unlawful and interpersonal male aggression was studied. Moreover, the possibility of individuals’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioral deficiencies was evaluated. Due to the special quality of aggressive behavior, when a person acts aggressively, there will be three processes involved. They are the behavioral activation mechanism activated by reward, the behavioral inhibition mechanism induced by punishment, and the Violence Inhibition Mechanism (VIM) triggered by victims’ cues of distress. In order to study these three processes, two sets of pictures were developed from study 1 in order to evaluate how participants functioned their VIM. The results showed differences between High, Medium, and Low Aggression Group. The High Aggression Group evaluated incidents of moral/ conventional transgression less serious than the other two groups did. Also, they showed less moral emotions and less empathic behaviors than the other two groups did. Based on the sets of pictures developed from Study 1, a group of young offenders were divided into two groups based on their VIM functioning. Further, a survival game was developed from Patterson and Newman’s four-stage model. By manipulating situations to present reward/punishment, those young offenders showed different aggressive patterns. Young offenders with good VIM functioning behaved more aggressively when there were rewards. Relatively, young offenders with poor VIM functioning were less likely to be influenced by either reward or punishment. The implications were discussed in the article.
