The impact of a large automotive manufacturing plant on demographic expansion and educational changes in a Mississippi school districtMcGehee, Ronnie Lynn 15 December 2007 (has links)
This study was designed to examine one school district’s response to the largest automobile plant in North America being built in its county. An economic development package worth in excess of one billion dollars would surely change the landscape of the community and the district for years to come, but how should the district respond? Nissan North America announced in November of 2000 that it would build the largest automobile plant in North America in Canton, Mississippi. This plant would employee over four thousand employees and thirteen suppliers to that plant that would employee another five to six thousand employees to supply parts, maintenance and support personnel. As the automobile industry began its move south in the 1980’s with Nissan in Smyrna, Tennessee, Mercedes in Vance, Alabama, Honda in Lincoln, Alabama, BMW in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Toyota in Georgetown, Kentucky, communities began to see changes that large economic development packages brought with them. This study looked at several key questions regarding the resulting effect on such a large influx of people. What were going to be the educational changes involved with such a project? Demographics were going to change, but how and when, the district experienced dramatic shifts in student population? If student population exploded, then what was the resulting effect upon the facilities of the district? If new facilities were going to be needed to house the existing and future student population then what school designs needed to be pursued to provide the latest educational advantage? With new students and new facilities, then how will the delivery of instruction adapt? Will curriculum and instruction adapt to meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind mandates and the needs of the areas’ newest employer? What about school personnel that operated and maintained the buildings; what about how to recruit the new teachers needed to instruct the coming explosion of student population? Finally, how will the school climate change with new students and parents entering the community from various regions to attain the well paying jobs associated with the automobile facility and its suppliers?

Uri-Nisn Gnesin : between the worlds, belonging to bothBredstein, Andrey Alexander, 1970- 13 July 2012 (has links)
This dissertation examines the life and work of the Jewish writer Uri-Nisn Gnesin (1879-1913). Living in Russia, using Yiddish in his daily life, and writing prose in Hebrew, Gnesin was part of a multicultural and multilingual generation, which was too
assimilated to live the traditional life of its fathers, and yet, not able to break with it
completely. For many Russian Jews, this dual identity, rarely recognized in modern scholarly discourse on Hebrew literature, resulted in psychological discomfort, feelings of guilt, and other traumas. Addressing this identity crisis, I show how the worldview of an assimilated Russian Jew is reflected in Gnesin’s Hebrew fiction. I offer an alternative view of Gnesin as a Jewish-Russian writer whose dual identity played a more complex
role in his literary work and whose influence transcended a simple knowledge of languages or classic texts. It was not merely a language or a book, but the unique Jewish-Slavic atmosphere of small Eastern European towns that provided Gnesin with all the
models necessary for thinking, feeling, and writing.
In my study, I consider theories of canonization to demonstrate the reason why Gnesin has first and foremost been categorized as a Hebrew writer. Contemporary scholars of modern Hebrew fiction generally agree that Gnesin’s fiction is secular due to the non-Jewish associative infrastructure of his work. By exploring the historical and spiritual conditions of Gnesin’s generation, I attempt to overcome the limitations of such a view,
which overemphasizes the role of language in his development as a writer. A functional analysis of Gnesin’s literary language maintains that although he found his best form of expression in literary Hebrew, it appeared mostly in the final stages of his writing. I propose that Gnesin and that whole generation of modern Hebrew writers used a special
“hyper-language” consisting of three integral parts: a natively spoken language, a commonly spoken non-Jewish national language, and a written literary language.
Ultimately, Gnesin appears to be a fin de siècle writer who used Hebrew language as a sophisticated tool to propagate his troubled Jewish-Russian experience. / text

An exploratory investigation of the implementation of Lean in a UK automotive plantMcSweeney, Andrew S. January 2017 (has links)
This thesis reflects upon several decades of research into Lean Production systems, highlighting the need for further investigation using an empirical study of exemplar implementations of Lean. The initial point of departure is an analysis of the current views of Lean based on a detailed literature review. The resulting Views of Lean Table provides a framework for the investigation of an exemplar Lean operation, viz the Nissan Sunderland Plant, widely regarded to be one of the most productive automotive plants in Europe. The exploratory nature of this investigation, and unique opportunity for access, argued for the use of an inductive single case study as an appropriate research approach. A four phase approach was used to; a) identify views of Lean, b) gain an initial understanding of the Nissan Production Way at the Nissan Sunderland Plant, b) acquire a detailed description of the Nissan Production Way and c) to assess the level of intrinsic motivation amongst employees. The primary objective of this research is to establish whether our current knowledge of Lean sufficiently encapsulates the concept’s many facets. Detailed semi-structured interviews with Nissan Production Way experts revealed that Nissan Sunderland Plant’s production system uses a large number of elements in contrast to the relatively narrow list of ‘Lean’ elements cited in the Views of Lean Table. In contrast to academic theory there was a focus on extrinsic motivation with low intrinsic motivation offset by the plant’s continuous fight for survival and ‘whatever-it-takes’ attitude. In practice Lean is viewed as an overarching philosophy with a toolkit encompassing a wide range of tools which are used when they are suitable for the task in hand.

Marriage of Convenience or Strategic Alliance? A Case Study on Renault and Nissan / Konvenansäktenskap eller strategisk allians? En fallstudie på Renault och NissanNkrumah, Sharon, Strand, Jenny January 2005 (has links)

Background: Recent trends in the world of business notably globalization and advanced technology have had significant effects on most companies irrespective of size and operations. A major consequence of these trends is increasing competition. This has consequently, increased the need for broader and more comprehensive strategies capable of ensuring the long-term survival of companies. One such strategy is strategic alliances. Strategic alliances provide companies with wider access and utilization of resources that they find difficult to acquire.

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to achieving a better and deeper understanding of global alliances and how they are coordinated. In so doing the research includes the nature of global alliances in general and the Renault-Nissan alliance in particular. The main focus and case study is the Renault-Nissan alliance but, the researchers also examine the reasons for the failure of the alliance between Volvo-Renault to determine what lessons if any, did Renault learn from this alliance and how these lessons has helped the Renault-Nissan alliance.

Findings: The research found that coordination at the operational level of the Alliance was achieved through coordination mechanisms. The coordination mechanisms were responsible for coordinating the resources and activities of both companies at the operational level. These mechanisms are the result of deliberate planning, implementation and monitoring to ensure that they function effectively as required. The research also found that the effectiveness of the mechanisms are greatly aided by factors such as trust, mutual respect, managerial commitment, and learning as well as structures such as the Coordination Bureaus, the Alliance Board and the Alliance Steering Committees. These were consequently labelled ‘facilitators’ of the coordination mechanisms. Finally, It was also found that the role of ‘facilitators’ permeates the entire coordination process. On the basis of these findings and the analysis made thereof, the researchers through analytical generalizations concluded that effective and efficient coordination of resources at the operational level leads to successful strategic alliances, which are achieved through planning, implementation, creation and monitoring of coordination mechanisms.

Sources of authority and effectiveness thereof for project managers at a South African automotive manufacturerKruger, W. E.(Wessel Edward) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research is a mini-study project that involves a Iiterature study of secondary sources as well as a questionnaire distributed within Nissan South Africa (NSA) to obtain primary data.
A natural outflow from the matrix structure applied at NSA is the lack of positional
authority for project managers to request resources from other functional
departments; resulting in a "responsibility-author~ gap". This research project
attempts to determine which sources of influence, as well as their effectiveness
perceived by project team members, are used to overcome the "responsibility-authority gap" at NSA.
A representative sample of questionnaires was received from respondents within
NSA. According to the questionnaire results, the most important influence methods project managers should use, as preferred by project team members, were determined as project authority, professional integrity, knowledge and work challenge for the members. A positive correlation for all the project manager influence methods used at NSA when the project managers' effectiveness rating in completing projects, indicates that project personnel positively associates the above mentioned influence methods with a project managers' effectiveness.
Project managers' preferred leadership techniques at NSA to overcome their
"responsibility--authority gap" was found to be negotiation, personality and/or
persuasive ability and competence.
Based on the study, the most prominent need at NSA, work challenge, requires
management intervention if employee satisfaction and retention requires
improvement. The writer recommend that assigned tasks should be professionally
challenging to project team members.
The writer feels confident that the research done within this study is a helpful
contribution to the pool of knowledge, regarding project manager influence styles and the relative effectiveness of each.
