Thermal characteristics of grinding fluids

High Efficiency Deep Grinding (HEDG) combines high depths of cut, high grinding wheel speeds with high work piece feed rates to deliver a very high stock removal process that can produce components free of surface damage. High contact temperatures are a characteristic of the process and this produces a mass of hot grinding sparks being ejected from the grinding zone. Neat oil cutting fluids are typically used in HEDG due to their excellent lubricity, but the high grinding wheel speeds employed leads to high levels of highly volatile cutting fluid mist in the machine canopy. This mist can mix with the hot grinding sparks being ejected from the grinding zone to create a potential fire hazard. The project aim was to produce a cutting fluid application strategy for the HEDG regime, focusing on establishing the thermal characteristics of cutting fluids in order to determine the optimum cutting fluid for the HEDG process. The cutting fluid application strategy also involved investigating the optimum means by which to apply the cutting fluid, based on minimising amount of cutting fluid used in the process and in reducing the potential fire hazard. The characteristics that have a thermal impact on the grinding process are the cooling, lubrication, ignition and misting properties of the fluid. A series of tests were established to investigate these properties and therefore allow different fluids to be compared and contrasted for their suitability for the HEDG regime based. Once an optimal cutting fluid had been established, the project then investigated the optimal method of applying this fluid, with particular reference to the type and design of the nozzle used to apply the fluid to the grinding zone. As part of these trials, a series of benchmark tests were also conducted using long established cutting fluid application techniques to enable the benefits of the new strategy to be evaluated. The project concluded that high viscosity neat oil ester based cutting fluids were the best fluids to be used in the HEDG regime due to they excellent lubricity and low misting properties coupled to their relatively high resistance to ignition when compared to neat mineral oils. The studies also found that using a high viscosity ester based fluid and then applying it using a coherent jet nozzle, significant reductions in the grinding powder and specific grinding energy could be achieved whilst significantly lowering the amount of mist in the machine, thus reducing the potential fire hazard and the volume of cutting fluid used by the process.

Effects of a web-based strategic, interactive computer application (fun fraction) on the performance of middle school students with learning disabilities in solving word problems with fractions and multiplication

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a web-based strategic, interactive computer application (Fun Fraction) on the ability of middle school students with LD, who have mathematics goals on their IEPs, to solve word problems with fractions and multiplication including two factors of a whole number (less than or equal to 4) and proper fractions. A multiple-probe single case research design across subjects was applied for the study. Three middle school students with learning disabilities participated in baseline, intervention, and maintenance test sessions over a 13-week period. Findings showed that there was an experimental effect for all three students, tested on their instructional probes; students' performance improved from baseline to intervention phases after receiving instruction through Fun Fraction. John and Alec reached the mastery level of 80% on two of the three review days. The level of change from baseline to intervention phases ranged from 28.67% to 68.89%. Even through there was no immediacy effect for John, the trend of his data (10.33) revealed a substantial growth in general. Additionally, the percentage of data showing improvement between baseline and intervention phases was 70% for Tiffany, 56% for John, and 100% for Alec. In particular, the improvement trend of Alec's data was statistically significant (Tau[subscript novlap] = 1, p < .05, CI 90% = .341<>1.659). All of them reached 80% accuracy percentage on their one-time maintenance tests. Regarding the three problem types of combine, partition, and compare for each representation and equation question, students struggled the most with combine representation questions and showed relatively better competence in compare equation questions. A learning-related social validity questionnaire and usability questionnaire indicated that students liked learning through Fun Fraction and recognized well the useful interaction design features embedded in Fun Fraction. Cognitive and metacognitive strategy questionnaires also indicated that students liked the represent strategy that allowed students to manipulate the rectangular area model, and students expressed positive views on the thinking process through metacognitive strategies embedded in Fun Fraction. / text

This report looks into the development and implementation of the iSeeMe solution. It discusses design decisions, describes the iSeeMe architecture, and outlines the process of engineering the application. It also examines the role of personal data in modern society and explores the mobile application market to see where iSeeMe will fit in among similar applications. Cost-aware online VM purchasing for cloud-based application service providers with arbitrary demands

Recent years witness the proliferation of Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud services, which provide on-demand resources (CPU, RAM, disk, etc.) in the form of virtual machines (VMs) for hosting services of third parties. As such, the way of enabling scalable and dynamic Internet applications has been remarkably revolutionized. More and more Application Service Providers (ASPs) are launching their applications in clouds, eliminating the need to construct and operate their owned IT hardware and software. Given the state-of-the-art IaaS offerings, it is still a problem of fundamental importance how the ASPs should rent VMs from the clouds to serve their application needs, in order to minimize the cost while meeting their job demands over a long run. Cloud providers offer different pricing options to meet computing requirements of a variety of applications. The commonly adopted cloud pricing schemes are (1) reserved instance pricing, (2) on-demand instance pricing, and (3) spot instance pricing. However, the challenge facing an ASP is how these pricing schemes can be blended to accommodate arbitrary demands at the optimal cost. In this thesis, we seek to integrate all available pricing options and design effective online algorithms for the long-term operation of ASPs. We formulate the long-term-averaged VM cost minimization problem of an ASP with time-varying and delay-tolerant workloads in a stochastic optimization model. An efficient online VM purchasing algorithm is designed to guide the VM purchasing decisions of the ASP based on the Lyapunov optimization technique. In stark contrast with the existing studies, our online VM purchasing algorithm does not require any a priori knowledge of the workload or any future information. Moreover, it addresses the possible job interruption due to uncertain availability of spot instances. Rigorous analysis shows that our algorithm can achieve a time-averaged VM purchasing cost with a constant gap from its offline minimum.
