A homoeopathic drug proving of Acacia xanthophloea 30CH with a subsequent comparison to its use in African medical tradition

Submitted in fulfillment of the Master’s Degree in Homoeopathy, Department of Homoeopathy, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2016. / Aim The aim of this homoeopathic proving study was to determine and document the arising symptomatology of Acacia xanthophloea (Fever tree) in the potentised homoeopathic form, 30CH, and to provide this data for inclusion to the homoeopathic materia medica. The results of this proving study and comparative analysis to African traditional medicinal uses of this substance confirms the potential therapeutic value of the remedy. Methodology The homoeopathic drug proving of Acacia xanthophloea 30CH was conducted in the form of a double blinded placebo controlled study. The investigation consisted of a total of 30 provers divided equally between two researchers ((A. Gobind and G. Zondi). The sample was randomly divided into two groups in which 24 provers(80%) were assigned into the verum group and the remaining six provers (20%) were allocated to the placebo group. All provers were requested to record their daily symptoms on the physical, mental and emotional planes in their journals for one week prior to administration of the proving substance. This formed as a mode of control for the comparison of symptomatology for the pre-proving and post proving period. A thorough case history was taken and physical examination performed on each prover before the commencement of the proving and after the duration of the proving period. Each prover received a total of nine powders. Starting on day 8 of the study the provers consumed one powder three times a day for three days and documented their daily symptoms in a journal. The duration of the proving term was six weeks in total. During this interval the researcher maintained consistent contact with the provers. Upon completion of the proving period all journals were collected and the information contained within these journals was translated into the materia medica and repertory format. This facilitated the establishment of the remedy portrait of Acacia xanthophloea 30CH. A subsequent comparison between the symptomatology that materialised in the provers and the African traditional medicinal uses was duly conducted. Results An extensive range of symptoms was reported by the provers. The outstanding themes that emanated from this proving on the mental plane include anger, anxiety, aversion to company, cheerful, depression, irritability, mood swings, restlessness, tranquillity and stress. A broad range of headaches were described with some headaches being associated with the eye. There were many eye symptoms displayed by the provers which include itching, redness, burning sensation and pain. The stomach symptoms revealed marked increased thirst, changeable appetite, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea with watery stools.The female genitalia / sex indicated several symptoms ranging from painful menstruation, bleeding and copious blood flow.The greatest number of symptoms in a system was associated with extremities, producing the greatest number of rubrics in the repertory section. Dream themes depicted by the provers were especially visionary, about family and friends in addition to other themes. The correlation process between the homoeopathic drug proving of Acacia xanthophloea 30CH and the African traditional medicinal use of the substance brought several resemblances to light.There were clear similarities with the eye symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms and headaches. Conclusion As hypothesised Acacia xanthophloea 30CH did produce distinctly observable signs and symptoms when administered to healthy provers. The symptoms that emerged during the proving provide evidence that an overlay exists between the remedy Acacia xanthphloea 30CH and the traditional use of the crude substance Acacia xanthophloea. The researcher proposes that further research should be conducted to determine the symptomatology of various homoeopathic potencies so that a complete image of the remedy Acacia xanthophloea 30CH can be established and the clinical applications can be broadened. / M

<p>Uvodno poglavlje je svojevrstan prolog u kojem se ukazuje na istorijske okolnosti pod kojim se istraživano područje formiralo kao istorijsko-geografska oblast, na mnoge administrativne, odnosno teritorijalne promene, na izolovanost, ali i na česta ratna pusto&scaron;enja koja su imala znatan uticaj na socijalnu i etničku strukturu stanovni&scaron;tva koje je u skladu sa svojim dinarskim poreklom do danas zadržalo svoj identitet, kako na planu materijalne, tako i na planu duhovne kulture Načelno je predstavljena tematika ovog rada, uz obrazloženja o opravdanosti odabira teme.<br />Studija je zasnovana na terenskim istraživanjima obavljenim u 44 naselja ove oblasti. Uz to, u radu je kori&scaron;ćena i građa akademika Vlade Milo&scaron;evića koja potiče iz desetak naselja. Transkribovane su 194 pesme, kako dvoglasne, starijeg i novijeg sloja, tako i one jednoglasne (uspavanke, tužbalice, svatovske, putničke i dr.).<br />Ovde se detaljno govori o najznačajnijim karakteristikama tradicionalnog narodnog pevanja severozapadne Bosne, uno&scaron;enjem svojevrsnog reda u ono &scaron;to se do sada znalo o ovom pevanju, najvi&scaron;e iz tekstova akademika Vlade Milo&scaron;evića, ali i iz istraživanja nekolicine istraživača koji su se ovim pevanjem bavili u novije vreme. Besides, academician Vlado Milosevic&rsquo;s inheritance which originates from ten of the settlements had been used in this work. In the study 194 songs had been transcribed, two voices songs both past and present layer, and single voice songs (lullabies, laments, wedding, travel etc.)<br />The most important characteristics of traditional folk singing in northwest Bosnia here are explained in details, introducing a kind of order in what was so far known about this type of singing, mostly from academician Vlado Milosevic&rsquo;s texts and from the professional work of few researchers who were recently dealt with this type of singing.<br />Special attention is paid on the traditional song from Bosanska Krajina called &ldquo;ojkača&rdquo;. It is emphasized that the title recalls to the traditional way of singing called &ldquo;ojkanje&rdquo;, and the fact it is basically new and related to the term &ldquo;traditional singing&rdquo; which also exists in Serbia.<br />It is corroborated with the fact that<br />ethnomusicologist Vlado Milosevic not even once mentioned &ldquo;ojkača&rdquo; song and with the sayings of the singers who remember the period when this term has not existed in their field of work.<br />This study significantly talks about characteristics of the verse, the characteristics of the tempo, tonal characteristics, as well as comprehensive characteristics (with the forms of two voices singing, heterophony and bordun heterophony when it is about the elder forms of two voices singing and homophony as in the modern forms of two voices singing).</p>

<p>Na na&scaron;im prostorima napitak crne kafe veoma je cijenjen i ima dugu tradiciju pripreme i konzumiranja. Izborom optimalnih parametara procesa prženja u industrijskim uslovima proizvodnje i definisanjem recepture, nastoji se postići odgovarajući kvaliteta, odnosno najprihvatljivija senzorska svojstava napitka kafe. Da bi kafa na određenom trži&scaron;tu zadovoljila želje i očekivanja poro&scaron;ača, potrebno je definisati parametre kvaliteta kafe za potrebe svakog ciljnog trži&scaron;ta. Primjenom deskriptivne senzorske analize moguće je dati precizan opis arome, ukusa i boje napitka kafe, kao najvažnijih senzorskih svojstava, sa značajnim uticajem na kvalitet i prihvatljivost kvaliteta.<br />Cilj ove doktorske disertacije je postizanje optimalnog senzorskog kvaliteta napitka crne kafe definisanjem parametara procesa prženja kafe u industrijskim uslovim proizvodnje i definisanjem optimalnog odnosa kafe vrste Arabika i kafe vrste Robuste, kao i definisanje senzorskog profila i sistema senzorskog ocjenjivanja napitka crne kafe koji se priprema na tradicionalan način.<br />Da bi se definisali parametri procesa prženja, neophodno je odrediti optimalnu temperaturu prženja, koja će omogućiti razvoj i formiranje prijatnih senzorskih svojstava u zrnu kafe. Za pripremanje napitka crne kafe na tradicionalan način obično se koriste dvije vrste kafe, Arabika i Robusta u različitom odnosu.<br />Na osnovu rezultata dobijenih hemijsko-fizičkim analizama uzoraka različitih vrsta kafa i mje&scaron;avina na različitim temperaturama prženja i senzorskom analizom napitka kafe pripremljenog od ispitivanih uzoraka kafe na tradicionalan način, sa ciljem pobolj&scaron;anja kvaliteta napitka kafe izborom optimalnih uslova prženja i odnosa različitih vrsta kafe može se zaključiti da uzorci napitka kafe pripremljeni od uzoraka proizvedenih prema proizvođačkoj specifikaciji nemaju očekivani kvalitet napitka kafe, kao i da proizvodnjom uzoraka pojedinačnih vrsta kafe pržene na 167&deg;C i 175&deg;C i njihovih mje&scaron;avina nije postignut optimalni kvaliteta napitka kafe. Takođe je zaključeno da je uzorak napitka kafe pržene na 171&deg;C N1 ocjenjen kao uzorak najboljih senzorskih svojstava (82,35%). Odnos kafa Arabika II klasa, Arabika I klasa i Robusta je bio 34,28%:51,42%:14,30%. Vrijednost titracione kiselosti iznosila je 128,86, sadržaj hlorogenske kiseline 3,77%, sadržaj kofeina 2,29%, sadržaj proteina 13,79%, sadržaj slobodne masti 14,37%, odnosno sadržaj ukupno zasićenih masnih kiselina 42,65%, a sadržaj ukupno nezasićenih masnih kiselina 57,36%, vrijednost pH 5,35 i aktivnost vode 0,102. Antioksidativna aktivnost je iznosila 235,57 &mu;mola TE/g uzorka (DPPH) i 217,62 &mu;mola TE/g uzorka (ABTS).<br />Uzorak U1 napitka kafe pripremljen na tradicionalan način od mje&scaron;avine kafe pržene na 171&deg;C, sitno mljevene okarakterisan je kao veoma prijatan za konzumiranje, sa najskladnijim aromatskim profilom, usagla&scaron;ene gorčine i kiselosti, prijatne i umjerene punoće ukusa i blagog i harmoničnog utiska u ustima. Odnos kafa Arabika II klasa, Arabika I klasa i Robusta u ovom uzorku je bio 34,28%:51,42%:14,30%.</p> / <p>Consumption of black coffee prepared in a traditional way is very popular in our region. By selecting the optimum parameters of roasting in industrial conditions and defining ratio of the individual species of coffee, it aims to achieve the appropriate quality, and the most acceptable sensory properties of a coffee beverage. In order to fulfill consumers expectations, it is necessary to define the parameters of quality coffee for the needs of each target market. Using descriptive sensory analysis it is possible to give a precise description of the aroma, taste and color of coffee beverage, as the most important sensory characteristics, with significant impact on the quality and acceptability of quality.<br />The aim of this PhD thesis was to achieve optimal sensory quality black coffee beverage, by defining the parameters of the coffee roasting within the industrial conditions and defining the optimal ratio of coffee Arabica and Robusta species, as well as defining a sensory profile and the system of sensory analysis black coffee beverage which was prepared on traditional way.<br />In order to define the parameters of the roasting process, it is necessary to determine the optimum temperature of roasting, which will enable the development and formation of pleasant sensory properties of coffee beans. For the preparation of coffee beverage in the traditional way, usually used two species of coffee, Arabica and Robusta in different ratio. Based on the results of chemical and physical analysis of coffee samples (different species and blends) at different roasting temperatures and results of sensory analysis of a coffee beverage prepared from coffee samples in the traditional way, with the aim of improving the coffee beverage quality, by determining optimal conditions of roasting and ratio of different species of coffee, it could be concluded that the samples of coffee beverage prepared from samples produced according to the production specification do not had the expected quality of coffee beverage. It also could be concluded that by production of individual species of coffee samples roasted at 167 and 175&deg; C, and their blends was not reached optimal quality of coffee beverage. It was also concluded that the coffee beverage of sample roasted at 171C, N1 was rated as the sample of the best sensory properties (82.35%). The ratio of coffee Arabica Class II, Arabica Class I and Robusta was 34.28%: 51.42%: 14.30%. Value of titratable acidity was 128.86, chlorogenic acid content was 3.77%, caffeine content was 2.29%, protein content was 13.79%, the content of free fat was 14.37%, total content of saturated fatty acids was 42.65%, and total content of unsaturated fatty acids was 57.36%, pH value was 5.35 and aw value was 0.102. The antioxidant activity was amounted 235.57 &mu;mol TE/g sample (DPPH) and 217.62 &mu;mol TE/g sample (ABTS).<br />Coffee beverage prepared in the traditional way from a sample U1 roasted at 171 &deg;C, finely ground, was characterized as very pleasant, with the most harmonious aromatic profile, pleasant bitterness and acidity, pleasant and moderate body and gentle and harmonious impression in the mouth. The ratio of coffee Arabica Class II, Arabica Class I and Robusta in this sample was 34.28%: 51.42%: 14.30%.</p>

Citizens who lived in the Soviet Union in the early 1980s did so amid a changing political atmosphere. For their extreme patience, they were rewarded with new policies (after 1985) that promised less censorship and more openness from the government to the people. The Soviet woman received special attention and promises in the shape of new reforms in the social spheres of education and employment. As often happens with political change, there were unintended results. As the policy of glasnost' or "openness" attempted to create and provide new possibilities for women, the unforeseen byproduct of the change was that a non-idyllic and even subversive female emerged in literature and society. This thesis will explore the prevailing cultural attitudes surrounding women before glasnost', as well as glasnost' itself and its policies affected the cultural attitudes as they related to the traditional woman's role in society. The thesis will also examine how glasnost' enabled the literary debut of the subversive female character, and foster this previously forbidden type and other prohibited topics. Finally, the discussion will turn to the immediate aftermath of glasnost' with some observations about the stunted position of the Russian woman in literature, and in society, after the breakup of the Soviet Union.This thesis will include brief studies of published shorter works-all by contemporary female Soviet writers of the 1980s-and their fictional characters. As the gender specific deep-seated beliefs, proverbs, laws and anecdotes connected to the "suggested" ideal life of the virtuous Soviet females are analyzed, the thesis will show how these fictional characters' behaviors directly and indirectly allowed Russian contemporary female writers to challenge taboo subjects within Russia through a new literary category of alternative women's prose.

Objective: The focus of this bachelor thesis is to study what a selection of magazine readers think generates value on the reading experience of a traditional lifestyle magazine. Furthermore create an deeper understanding of these values.  Method: Qualitative interviews was used as the method to investigate the participants' view of the user experience when reading a lifestyle magazine paper. Seven interviews were conducted with people who prefer the traditional newspaper.  Results: The results of this study show that it may be to early to talk about the print magazines dead. The physical and mental feeling that appear from reading a lifestyle paper magazine is almost impossible to implement in the digital version. Our results show that some of the underlying causes that lead to a the choise of the print magazine depends on the structure, the reading experience and the qualitative content that appears to be difficult to emulate on the web.
