Black-Litterman Model: Practical Asset Allocation Model Beyond Traditional Mean-VarianceAbdumuminov, Shuhrat, Esteky, David Emanuel January 2016 (has links)
This paper consolidates and compares the applicability and practicality of Black-Litterman model versus traditional Markowitz Mean-Variance model. Although well-known model such as Mean-Variance is academically sound and popular, it is rarely used among asset managers due to its deficiencies. To put the discussion into context we shed light on the improvement made by Fisher Black and Robert Litterman by putting the performance and practicality of both Black- Litterman and Markowitz Mean-Variance models into test. We will illustrate detailed mathematical derivations of how the models are constructed and bring clarity and profound understanding of the intuition behind the models. We generate two different portfolios, composing data from 10-Swedish equities over the course of 10-year period and respectively select 30-days Swedish Treasury Bill as a risk-free rate. The resulting portfolios orientate our discussion towards the better comparison of the performance and applicability of these two models and we will theoretically and geometrically illustrate the differences. Finally, based on extracted results of the performance of both models we demonstrate the superiority and practicality of Black-Litterman model, which in our particular case outperform traditional Mean- Variance model.

Background: Women partaking in businesses as entrepreneurs is a field getting increased attention in Palestine. Women’s underutilized economic potential along with entrepreneurial activity as a key driver behind economic progress, make the field of women entrepreneurship in Palestine a matter of importance. The agricultural sector is one of the larger for Palestinian women employment, which is why it might attract aspiring entrepreneurs. With investments from Palestinian authorities as well as NGOs, directed towards developing Palestinian women entrepreneurship, one could argue that the opportunities for women to become entrepreneurs exist. But what is the opinion of the women entrepreneurs themselves regarding existing possibilities and obstacles?Purpose of the study: To examine the process for women entrepreneurs of establishing and running micro companies in the agricultural sector on the West Bank in order to highlight the possibilities and obstacles that they experience.Methodological framework: The study had a qualitative approach in which we conducted semi-structured interviewes with eleven women entrepreneurs, active in agriculture.Conclusion: Our findings suggest that women enter entrepreneurship out of necessity as well as reasons more connected to self fulfilment and grasping at possibly profitable business opportunities. Previous experience in agriculture affected both the willingness to start a business and proved helpful for the entrepreneurial success. Notable challenges were found in marketing, legal matters and the physically tiring work. Most of our respondents did not concentrate on developing the support activities connected to their businesses, directing more of their attention towards primary activities. Our respondents also made use of networks, spanning from private connections to professional contacts.

An associate degree in nursing is obtained in the community college setting and is designed to be completed in 2 years of full-time study. Approximately 70% of practicing registered nurses (RNs) are educated at the associate degree or diploma (vocational training) level with only 15% moving on to achieve a degree past the associate level. The purpose of this phenomenological research is to study the lived experiences of registered nurses who obtained an associate degree in nursing and, while working in a health care setting, returned to school to attain a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN). Data gathered during individual interviews will provide documentation of the benefits of attaining a BSN as well as identifying barriers that associate degree RNs must overcome to pursue a BSN education.

The Village of River Ranch: A Post Occupancy Evaluation of a Traditional Neighborhood Development in Lafayette, LouisianaTomlinson, Elizabeth A. 15 December 2007 (has links)
The proponents of New Urbanism claim the neighborhoods they design, called Traditional Neighborhood Developments (TNDs), promote community, sense of place, physical health, and environmental sustainability. Critics assert that community is stressed at the expense of individuality, that design unity has become rigid uniformity, and that the neighborhoods are orchestrated and do not reflect real life. This thesis, a post occupancy evaluation (POE), examines how one TND works for its residents and whether it accomplishes the goals of the architect/planner. An additional, essential purpose of this POE is to serve the "feed-forward" role of informing future neighborhood planning projects. The Village of River Ranch in Lafayette, Louisiana is the site of my research. Utilization of multiple research methods (survey, interviews, naturalistic observations) offered opportunities for triangulation and the ability to produce a more comprehensive analysis.

This thesis examines how traditional media could reinforce its position as a reliable source of information, overcoming the huge amount of misinformation in public space. First, the thesis analyzes the concept of fake news, examining different concepts of this expression across American and Anglo-Saxon environments. In the following chapters, the thesis presents a link between trust in media and the spread of fake news, outlines psychological factors that allow for fake news to be spread easily and highlights the role of media literacy. Next chapters list the specific ways in which traditional media can fight against fake news, for example through slow journalism or factual verification. That is how the thesis gets to the three analyzed fact-checking departments, which were established as a part of foreign traditional media: ARD Faktenfinder, BBC Reality Check and RFE / RL / VOA Polygraph.info. These departments were founded between 2015 and 2017 and perceive verification of information as an independent journalistic output. Using semi-structured interviews, the thesis examines how these departments work, how they define fake news, what are their future plans or whether they actively contribute to the development of media literacy. Alguns estudiosos já apontaram fórmulas nos resquícios da obra de Safo e Alceu. O estudo das expressões tradicionais em Homero deu origem, no século XX, às investigações oralistas da épica grega. Ao analisar as conjunções de nome e epíteto nas epopeias homéricas, Milman Parry viu na linguagem épica dicção tradicional e herdada, destinada a facilitar a composição dos cantos. Mais tarde, em contato com outras tradições poéticas, Parry sugeriu que esse caráter tradicional se devia à oralidade da poesia homérica. Seu discípulo Albert Lord e outros estudiosos expandiram suas conclusões, descrevendo o funcionamento das fórmulas e de outras unidades tradicionais, como temas narrativos e tipos de canção. Estudar semelhantes elementos na poesia lésbia é mais difícil, devido a seu estado fragmentário. No entanto, os poucos resquícios mostram consideráveis reiterações de fórmulas, temas e tipos de canto, o que, junto ao caráter herdado e especializado do dialeto, sugere uma dicção oral-tradicional lésbia independente. Por muito tempo, a dicção tradicional da epopeia foi encarada principalmente do ponto de vista da composição, mas sobretudo as investigações de John Miles Foley mostraram que ela também é um recurso de significação, que condicionava a recepção das canções pela audiência (tão fluente nessa linguagem especializada quanto o poeta). Foley nomeia o fenômeno referencialidade tradicional. Também se pode identificar semelhante referencialidade tradicional na poesia lésbia. Quatro fragmentos de Safo (frr. 1, 16, 31 e o Poema dos Irmãos) prestam-se à investigação, por sua extensão. Compostos no mesmo metro (a estrofe sáfica), também permitem observar a relação entre tradição, significação e versificação na canção eólica. Os fragmentos acabam por demonstrar vários paralelos formulares e temáticos, tanto com composições lésbias como com a mélica em geral, a elegia, o iambo e a epopeia. As proximidades sugerem que também a referencialidade tradicional é pan-helênica e, por outro lado, que a abordagem comparativa, sob esse viés teórico, é útil para elucidação da composição e do sentido dos cantos. Também se mostrou que a métrica parece importante elemento de significação tradicional, havendo estreita relação entre as expectativas métricas e a estrutura dos fragmentos. / Some scholars have identified formulae in the poetic remains of Sappho and Alcaeus. In the 20th Century, the study of traditional expressions in Homer originated the oralist approach to Greek epic. Analysing noun-epithet clusters in the Homeric poems, Milman Parry characterized epic language as traditional, inherited diction, which enabled composition. Later, studying other traditional poetries, Parry linked the traditonal character of epic diction to its oral nature. His disciple Albert Lord and other scholars built on his conclusions, describing how formulae and other traditional unities (such as narrative themes and song patterns) work. Analysing similar elements in Lesbian is conditioned by its fragmentary state. However, the few remains contain several repeated formulae, themes and song patterns. Like the inherited and specialized dialect, this repetition suggests an autonomous oral-traditional Lesbian diction. At the same time, Aeolic poets share the same traditional units as other archaic poets (Ionian or Dorian). This points to the existence of a Panhellenic poetic language, despite generic and regional differences. These similarities allow comparing traditional elements throughout the whole surviving archaic (and even classic) output. For a long time, traditional diction was considered to be a means of composition. Nonetheless, mainly John Miles Foley\'s studies have shown that it is also a way of meaning, which frames the audience\'s reception (who were as fluent in this specialized language as the singer). Foley names this phenomenon traditional referentiality. One could also ask whether this expedient is to be found in Lesbian poetry. Given their extent, four fragments of Sappho (frr. 1, 16, 31 and \"The Brothers\' Poem\") are useful to this investigation. Composed in the same metre (the Sapphic stanza), they also provide a case for the study of the interaction of tradition, meaning and versifying in Aeolic song. The poems have numerous formulaic and thematic parallels to both Lesbian compostions and general Greek lyric, elegiac, iambic and epic poetry. Traditional referentiality seems to be Pan- Hellenic and comparative approaches under this theoretical point of view appear to be useful to explain the songs\' composition and meaning. It has also been shown that metre seems to be an important element in Aeolic traditional meaning production. There is a close relationship between metrical expectations and the fragments\' structure.

Esta dissertação estuda a obra de José Zanine Caldas, relacionando a sua trajetória de vida com o saber-fazer tradicional, com enfoque na época em que morou e trabalhou em Nova Viçosa, sul da Bahia, cidade para a qual fez um projeto urbanístico. Nela também teve uma oficina, onde desenvolvia casas chamadas de \"pré-elaboradas\", pois eram fabricadas na Bahia, montadas, desmontadas e enviadas para todo o Brasil, para serem remontadas em seu terreno definitivo. Na mesma cidade, projetou móveis que chamou de \"móveis-denúncia\". Este trabalho também estuda o saber-fazer de Zanine, descrevendo, portando, produção de móveis e casas, desde o corte da madeira. No caso das residências, também descreve a montagem no seu local definitivo. Para isso, fez-se a análise de uma casa \"pré- elaborada\" localizada no bairro do Morumbi, São Paulo. / Studies the work of José Zanine Caldas, relating his life trajectory with the traditional know-how, focusing on the time when he lived and worked in Nova Viçosa, south of Bahia, city for which he made an urban project and where he also had a manufactory, where he developed houses called \"pré-elaboradas\" (pre-elaborated). These houses were manufactured in Bahia, assembled, dismantled and sent all over Brazil to be reassembled in their definitive location. During the same period of time he also designed pieces of furniture called \"móveis-denuncia\" (furniture complaint). This research also studies the know-how of Zanine, describing the production of these pieces of furniture and houses since the cutting of the wood. In the case of residences, it describes the assembly at its final location. For this purpose, we analised one \"pre-elaborated\" house, located in the district of Morumbi, São Paulo.

L’environnement national et international dans lequel évolue le droit bancaire impose à la banque d’adopter une nouvelle vision de son métier et de ses missions. Lorsque la banque exerce ses activités, des considérations autres que son intérêt privé et la rentabilité de ses affaires doivent désormais être prises en compte. La crise bancaire et financière de l’année 2008 a fortement accéléré les mutations de la matière allant dans ce sens, en faisant peser sur le banquier de nouvelles missions imprégnées de considérations d’ordre moral, social et économique. Ces missions imposent au banquier inéluctablement de renoncer à son attachement aux principes traditionnels du droit bancaire qui ont longtemps guidé son action et constitué, pour lui, les repères généraux dans l’exercice de son métier. À travers un certain nombre d’illustrations, notre thèse tend à mesurer l’impact de ces missions sur les principes traditionnels du droit bancaire. La métamorphose de ces principes se révèle bien avancée. Ainsi, le banquier se trouve dans une position délicate entre ses vieux repères et ses nouvelles missions. La complexité croissante de la matière accentuée par l’inflation des textes et l’absence de vision d’ensemble rendent difficile la recherche de nouveaux principes fondamentaux en la matière. / The national and international environment of the banking law requires the bank to adopt a new vision of its business and its missions. Nowadays, when the bank operates, considerations other than its private interest and the profitability of its business must now be considered. The banking and financial crisis of 2008 has greatly accelerated mutations in this direction, by imposing on the banker new missions related to moral, social and economic. These missions require the banker inevitably to abandon its commitment to the traditional benchmarks in the exercise of his profession. Through a number of illustrations, this thesis tends to measure the impact of these missions on traditional principles of banking law. The metamorphosis of these principles appears well advanced. Thus, the banker is in a delicate position between its old landmarks and its new missions. The increasing complexity of the matte is accented by text material inflation and the lack of overall vision, that makes it difficult to search new fundamental principles.

This essay discusses how women in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby (1925) are portrayed in different ways. During this time between the world wars, progressive women walked the streets of New York. These ‘New Women’ wore short dresses, cut their hair, smoked and drank in public, and showed interest in politics and education. The New Woman is portrayed in different versions in the female characters Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker and Myrtle Wilson. These characters are also representations of the patriarchal idea of women as ‘good girls’ and ‘bad girls’, depending on how well they adapt to and fit into the traditional gender roles. Through a discussion of how Daisy, Jordan and Myrtle are portrayed as ‘good’ and ‘bad’, the essay shows how the ‘bad girls’ in the novel are punished by patriarchy by being described unfavorably by the narrator or by suffering socially in a society with patriarchal values. / Den här uppsatsen diskuterar hur kvinnorna i F. Scott Fitzgeralds verk Den store Gatsby (1925) skildras på olika sätt. USA började förändras under mellankrigstiden, bland annat började en kvinnorörelse som resulterade i en ”ny typ av kvinna”. Kvinnorna började bära korta klänningar, klippte håret, drack och rökte offentligt samt intresserade sig för utbildning och politik. Den här nya kvinnan skildras på olika vis i de kvinnliga huvudkaraktärerna Daisy Buchanan, Jordan Baker och Myrtle Wilson. Men dessa karaktärer fungerar även som representationer av den patriarkala idén om att kvinnor är uppdelade i två kategorier: ’duktig flicka’ och ’dålig flicka’ beroende på hur väl de följer de traditionella könsrollerna. Genom att diskutera hur Daisy, Jordan och Myrtle är porträtterade som ’duktiga’ och ’dåliga’ visar uppsatsen hur de ’dåliga’ blir bestraffade av patriarkatet genom att bli ofördelaktigt beskrivna av berättaren eller bestraffade socialt i ett samhälle som genomsyras av patriarkala värderingar.

Les savoir-faire traditionnels ont été pendant longtemps considérés comme ayant peu d'intérêt. Leur reconnaissance internationale s'est faite à la conférence de Rio de 1992 à travers la convention sur la diversité biologique. Cette reconnaissance et la signature de l'accord sur la propriété intellectuelle de 1994 (ADPIC) ont entraîné de la part des pays du Sud (principalement) des questions auxquelles le droit et, plus particulièrement le droit de la propriété intellectuelle (DPI) ont du mal à répondre. La principale étant quel type de protection juridique apporter aux savoir-faire traditionnels et plus particulièrement à ceux liés à la biodiversité. Le DPI a non seulement du mal à cerner quels sont les droits et avantages à accorder aux détenteurs de ces savoirs, mais aussi et surtout, à cerner cette notion de savoir-faire traditionnel. Il a d'autant plus de mal à répondre aux questions soulevées par cette notion, que les débats juridiques sont le plus souvent dirigés par des intérêts économiques et politiques où s'affrontent deux conceptions très différentes de la protection juridique des savoir-faire traditionnels. Celle des Etats du Nord qui ont une conception privative du dpi, dont le but est de maîtriser ''l'utilisation scientifique et commerciale des savoirs traditionnels'' et celle des Etats du Sud qui ont une vision collective, communautaire de la protection de leurs savoirs dans le but de ''protéger l'intégrité des savoirs traditionnels''. La principale réponse apportée jusqu'à présent sur le plan international est le brevet, celui-ci semble, pourtant, peu adapté à ces savoir collectifs et ancestraux. En fait, derrière cette notion de savoir-faire traditionnel, se profile une question essentielle, celle de l'accès aux ressources génétiques et aux savoir-faire traditionnels. Ce travail a pour but d'explorer de nouvelles alternatives à la propriété intellectuelle. / The traditional know-how were considered for a long time as having not much interest. Their international recognition was made at the Rio Conference of 1992, through the Convention on Biological Diversity. This recognition and the signing of the Agreement on the Aspects of Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights of 1994 (TRIPS) have led the countries of the South mainly, to raise questions to which the law and, more particularly the law of the intellectual property (DPI) are struggling to answer. The main question is to know the nature of the legal protection given to traditional know-how and more particularly to those related to biodiversity. The DIP not only has difficulty in identifying the nature of the rights and benefits to be granted to the holders of this knowledge, but above all, in identifying this notion of traditional know-how. The DIP struggle to address the issues as legal débats are generally lead by political and economical interests where two very different conceptions of the legal protection of traditional know-how confront each other. The one of northern states that have a private and utilitarian conception. That of northern states that have a private and utilitarian conception. The aim is, with DPI, to control the scientific and commercial use of know-how. The one of southern states that have a collective or even community vision of the protection of their knowledge in order to protect the integrity - spiritual, cultural and social - of traditional knowledge. The main international answer today is the certificate. However, this one doesn’t fit well these traditional collective and ancestral know-how. In fact, behind this notion of traditional know-how, there is a key issue, that of access to genetic resources and traditional know-how. The ambition assigned to this thesis (PhD) is to explore new alternatives to intellectual property, in order to find a regime appropriate legal framework for traditional know-how.
