Contudo, esperamos demonstrar que isso não é de todo negativo. Sua não pertença ao cânone, seu como que apagamento da literatura, acabou por consagrá-la a um nicho de pesquisa, em sua especificidade, dos estudos helênicos. Ainda que configure um objeto de pesquisa, seu interesse de estudos acabou sendo historicamente estabelecido enquanto fonte de perguntas em nível antropológico, biográfico e social. Contudo seja esse agora seu lugar acadêmico, gostaríamos de discutir a noção de que sua não pertença ao cânone revela aspectos de soberania e absolutismo dos conceitos fundamentais em que se sustenta a moderna crítica literária. A isso nos dedicamos em nossa pesquisa monográfica de conclusão de curso. Com o presente trabalho, contudo, quer-se demonstrar que a poesia de Safo é capaz de sustentar um pensamento escritural (não teorético) de grande porte. Para tanto, apresentamos aqui o debate teórico do pensamento francês contemporâneo sobre as ideias de corpo e comunidade e avançamos a proposta de que a lírica de Safo é um belíssimo exemplo avant la lettre da segunda, ao passo que está bem à frente dos debates teóricos contemporâneos quanto à primeira, pois permite uma concepção de corpo que gera um entendimento de textualidade próprio, segundo as ideias de fragmentação e incompletude, e menos absolutista porque menos arraigado às ideias de subjetividade, consciência e intencionalidade que sustentam o logocentrismo do pensamento especulativo literário. Para encaminhar esse argumento, seguimos a linha teórica da desconstrução de Jacques Derrida em um debate entre Jean-Luc Nancy e Maurice Blanchot, às voltas com Georges Bataille. / Sappho's lyrical poetry is by now of millenary power, but she remains outside the literary canon however steady her poetry still stands. Her marginalization from the canon and erasure from literature has resulted in a granted niche of research, however very specific, in modern Greek Studies. Even though to some she configures as a fine subject of enquiry, the interest she provides to speculative thinking has been so far historically established as pertaining almost exclusively to anthropological, biographical, cultural and social questions and they, if not motivated by linguistic interest, almost never concern her poetry. They certainly do not concern her poetry as an aesthetic and scriptural field of enquiry to problems of contemporary thought. For those reasons, we would like to discuss the notion that her absence from the canon actually reveals modern literary critic's sovereign statute and absolutist character. In order to discuss Sappho's importance to contemporary thought, we present the contemporary French debate about the ideas of body and community and advance the proposal that her lyric is a beautiful example of community but is however far ahead as to what concerns the body. Her poetry allows for a less absolutist understanding of text for its fragmentary character because it is entirely absent from the ideas of subjectivity, consciousness and intentionality that have given modern literary critic the strength to keep its logocentric hold on text and culture. To give course to that purpose, we follow Jacque Derrida's theory of Deconstruction and fuel a debate between Jean-Luc Nancy and Maurice Blanchot in their desire to understand Georges Bataille's literary and theoretical texts.

Alguns estudiosos já apontaram fórmulas nos resquícios da obra de Safo e Alceu. O estudo das expressões tradicionais em Homero deu origem, no século XX, às investigações oralistas da épica grega. Ao analisar as conjunções de nome e epíteto nas epopeias homéricas, Milman Parry viu na linguagem épica dicção tradicional e herdada, destinada a facilitar a composição dos cantos. Mais tarde, em contato com outras tradições poéticas, Parry sugeriu que esse caráter tradicional se devia à oralidade da poesia homérica. Seu discípulo Albert Lord e outros estudiosos expandiram suas conclusões, descrevendo o funcionamento das fórmulas e de outras unidades tradicionais, como temas narrativos e tipos de canção. Estudar semelhantes elementos na poesia lésbia é mais difícil, devido a seu estado fragmentário. No entanto, os poucos resquícios mostram consideráveis reiterações de fórmulas, temas e tipos de canto, o que, junto ao caráter herdado e especializado do dialeto, sugere uma dicção oral-tradicional lésbia independente. Ao mesmo tempo, os poetas eólicos partilham as mesmas unidades com outros poetas arcaicos (jônicos ou dóricos), o que aponta para a existência de linguagem poética tradicional pan-helênica, apesar das diferenças genéricas e regionais. Essa semelhança permite que se comparem o emprego de elementos tradicionais ao longo de toda produção arcaica (e mesmo clássica). Por muito tempo, a dicção tradicional da epopeia foi encarada principalmente do ponto de vista da composição, mas sobretudo as investigações de John Miles Foley mostraram que ela também é um recurso de significação, que condicionava a recepção das canções pela audiência (tão fluente nessa linguagem especializada quanto o poeta). Foley nomeia o fenômeno referencialidade tradicional. Também se pode identificar semelhante referencialidade tradicional na poesia lésbia. Quatro fragmentos de Safo (frr. 1, 16, 31 e o Poema dos Irmãos) prestam-se à investigação, por sua extensão. Compostos no mesmo metro (a estrofe sáfica), também permitem observar a relação entre tradição, significação e versificação na canção eólica. Os fragmentos acabam por demonstrar vários paralelos formulares e temáticos, tanto com composições lésbias como com a mélica em geral, a elegia, o iambo e a epopeia. As proximidades sugerem que também a referencialidade tradicional é pan-helênica e, por outro lado, que a abordagem comparativa, sob esse viés teórico, é útil para elucidação da composição e do sentido dos cantos. Também se mostrou que a métrica parece importante elemento de significação tradicional, havendo estreita relação entre as expectativas métricas e a estrutura dos fragmentos. / Some scholars have identified formulae in the poetic remains of Sappho and Alcaeus. In the 20th Century, the study of traditional expressions in Homer originated the oralist approach to Greek epic. Analysing noun-epithet clusters in the Homeric poems, Milman Parry characterized epic language as traditional, inherited diction, which enabled composition. Later, studying other traditional poetries, Parry linked the traditonal character of epic diction to its oral nature. His disciple Albert Lord and other scholars built on his conclusions, describing how formulae and other traditional unities (such as narrative themes and song patterns) work. Analysing similar elements in Lesbian is conditioned by its fragmentary state. However, the few remains contain several repeated formulae, themes and song patterns. Like the inherited and specialized dialect, this repetition suggests an autonomous oral-traditional Lesbian diction. At the same time, Aeolic poets share the same traditional units as other archaic poets (Ionian or Dorian). This points to the existence of a Panhellenic poetic language, despite generic and regional differences. These similarities allow comparing traditional elements throughout the whole surviving archaic (and even classic) output. For a long time, traditional diction was considered to be a means of composition. Nonetheless, mainly John Miles Foley\'s studies have shown that it is also a way of meaning, which frames the audience\'s reception (who were as fluent in this specialized language as the singer). Foley names this phenomenon traditional referentiality. One could also ask whether this expedient is to be found in Lesbian poetry. Given their extent, four fragments of Sappho (frr. 1, 16, 31 and \"The Brothers\' Poem\") are useful to this investigation. Composed in the same metre (the Sapphic stanza), they also provide a case for the study of the interaction of tradition, meaning and versifying in Aeolic song. The poems have numerous formulaic and thematic parallels to both Lesbian compostions and general Greek lyric, elegiac, iambic and epic poetry. Traditional referentiality seems to be Pan- Hellenic and comparative approaches under this theoretical point of view appear to be useful to explain the songs\' composition and meaning. It has also been shown that metre seems to be an important element in Aeolic traditional meaning production. There is a close relationship between metrical expectations and the fragments\' structure.

O trabalho analisa um conjunto de fragmentos de Safo e Alceu em busca de resquícios da poesia praticada pelos povos indo-europeus. A análise parte da comparação entre aspectos da poesia de ambos autores dentro do contexto mais amplo da poesia de culturas de origem indo-europeia, centrando-se em aspectos de dicção, fórmulas, métrica e uma mitologia comum. Com isso, descobrem-se amplos laços de contato entre a poesia dos autores lésbios com diversas tradições poéticas, tais como a indiana, a iraniana, a irlandesa, a germânica, dentre outras. Além disso, o trabalho toca um pouco em um aspecto correlato, que são as relações entre a poesia lésbia e outras tradições poéticas gregas, especialmente a épica, representada por Homero. Por fim, conclui-se que a poesia lésbia se centra dentro de uma firme tradição indoeuropeia comum a toda a poesia grega, recebida diferentemente por cada um dos dois poetas: de maneira mais conservadora para Alceu, e Safo, em diversos momentos, ressignificando essa tradição, sem contudo se afastar dela. / This work investigates a group of fragments by the Lesbian poets Sappho and Alcaeus in search of relics from the poetry of the ancient Indo-European people. The investigation starts from the comparison between aspects of the poetry of both poets in the wider context of poetry of Indo-European origin, focusing on aspects of diction, formulae, metrics and a common inherited mythology. Numerous links are discussed between the Lesbian poets and several poetic traditions such as Indian, Iranian, Irish, Germanic, among others. Besides, this work touches a correlate point by screening the relations between Lesbian and other Greek poetic traditions, specially epic, as represented by Homer. At last, the conclusion is that Lesbian poetry represents a firm Indo-European poetic tradition, one that is common to all Greek poetry and received differently by each of both poets: more conservatively by Alcaeus, and Sappho, in several moments reshaping this tradition without distancing itself from it.

E, nessa mistura das cores, como apontou Safo, nesse caleidoscópio em forma de arco-íris é gerada uma construção histórica, na qual se constitui uma narrativa. Nesse processo, surgem novas formas, como assim indica Foucault, em um jogo político e o pensar como sujeito. Vale afirmar também que da era clássica à contemporânea verifica-se a grande contribuição que, significativamente, fornece subsídios para o reconhecimento da diversidade das identidades, incluindo a sexualidade. Deduz-se que, decerto, o conceito de identidade problematizado conduz a uma compreensão da formação do corpo político das lésbicas e os elementos envolvidos. O marco teórico abordado nesta dissertação está centrado nas poesias de Safo, bem como em pensadores e filósofos. Por fim, a fluidez no agir desse corpo político possibilita certa originalidade a este. Assim, a sexualidade é colocada sob novos modos criativos, isso em certo sentido quer dizer que não se descobre o esbianismo, pois este existe pela vontade e é nseparável do que se é. ______________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This paper aims to establish a dialogue on the formation of the body politic of lesbians, streamlined and historical processes. And this mix of colors, as noted by Sappho, this kaleidoscope in the shape of the rainbow is created a historic building, which is a narrative. And so, in the process new forms, as Foucault put a political game and thinking as a subject. It also states that of the classical era to the contemporary era there is the great contribution that provides significant subsidies for the recognition of the diversity of identities, and that includes sexuality. Surely questioned the concept of identity leads to an understanding of the formation of the body politic of lesbians and the elements involved. The theoretical framework discussed in this dissertation is the centrality of poetry in Safo, thinkers (s) and philosophers. Finally, the fluidity of the body politic act allows certain originality to it. Thus, sexuality is placed under new creative ways, in a sense this means that lesbianism is not discovered, because it exists by the will and is inseparable from what one is.

Para isso, buscou a compreensão do processo que conectou a construção de sua biografia a uma tradição ficcional, segundo a qual a poeta teria se suicidado por amor, um ato espetacular, fruto de interpretações da narrativa de Ovídio, poeta latino do século I a.C. Ao tripartir essa vontade de narrar o salto de Safo, a pesquisa aceita a imagem enquanto epifania singular de seu corpo. A primeira delas, do pintor neoclássico Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, está atualmente exposta no Museu do Hermitage de São Petersburgo. No centro do tríptico, uma imagem caricatural, produzida para Le Charivari, um semanário de grande circulação na Paris de meados do século XIX. Por fim, uma aquarela, dentre inúmeras pinturas e desenhos de Gustave Moreau sobre a poeta. Ao enfatizar a relação entre o corpo figurado e a construção da identidade-memória de Safo que, no século XIX, está vinculada à materialidade do corpo, a leitura estabelece uma geografia discursiva que envolve representações do feminino, do homoerotismo, da Ilha de Lesbos e do exótico que representa a relação entre elas e Safo. A tese sustenta que o erótico constituinte de Safo, atravessado por elementos simbólicos da fictio ovidiana, possibilitou a proliferação das imagens do salto na França do século XIX. Imagens que, por sua vez, refletem um campo de tensões entre o desejo de "ver" a personagem histórica no meio dos rastros e o choque entre narrativas antigas e mecanismos de controle do prazer entre os modernos. / Abstract: This research realize a reading of the representations of the greek poetess of the archaic period, Sapho, in three pictorical images on the France of the XIX century. Thereunto, seek the comprehension that conected the building of her biograph to a fictional tradition, according to, the poetess would have commited suicide by Love, a spectacular act, fruit of the interpretations of the Ovidian narratives, latin poet from century I B.C. Triparting this wish of narrate the Sapho transition, the research accept the image while a singular epiphany of her body. The first of them, from the neoclassic painter Pierre-Narcisse Guerin, that is actually exposed on the Hermitage Museum at St. Petersburg. At the triptical center a caricaractural image that was produced to Le Charivari, a weekly newspaper of a great circulation in Paris of the XIX century. Ultimately, a watercolour among the several paintings and draws from Gustave Moreau about the poetess. When emphasized the relation between the figured body and the build of the identity memory of Sapho, that in century XIX is connected to the materiality of the body, the reading offer a discursive geography that involves representations of the female, of the homoerotism, of the Lesbos island and from the exotic, that represents the relation between them and Sapho. The thesis support that the Sapho erotic constituent, crossed by simbolical elements of the Ovidian fictio allowed the proliferation of images in the XIX century France transition. Para tanto, realizase um exercício de tradução e leitura analítica de quatro fragmentos da poetisa grega Safo de Lesbos (VII-VI a.C.). Exercício este, que visa destacar alguns aspectos formais e de conteúdo presentes nestes fragmentos, tendo em vista que alguns estudiosos buscam, a partir destes, sublinhar uma singularidade presente nos compostos sáficos, que seria atribuível ao fato de que estes dariam a ouvir uma voz feminina. Nessa perspectiva, buscarse-á, também, apontar e problematizar os principais pressupostos teóricos que, em diferentes medidas, perpassam os trabalhos destes estudiosos - no que diz respeito as suas concepções da relação linguagem/discurso e sexo/gênero daquele que enuncia. Para tanto, propor-se-á, aqui, uma discussão acerca das maneiras pelas quais as questões relativas à linguagem, em interface com as discussões de caráter feminista, aparecem, sobretudo, no âmbito da disciplina histórica e da literatura. Assim como, chamar a atenção para as particularidades que devem ser levadas em consideração, no trato com as composições gregas de caráter poético produzidas no Período Arcaico (VIII - VI a.C.) / Abstract: The main objective of this dissertation is to discuss how the relation between language/discourse is closely connected with the question of sex/gender, in the work of scholars who seek to study the fragments of Sappho's poems. To accomplish this, there will be an exercise in translating and analytically reading four fragments by the Greek poet Sappho of Lesbos (VII-VI BC). This exercise aims to highlight some formal and contentoriented aspects present in these fragments, since some scholars have sought to stress a singularity in this sapphic compositions, owing to the fact that they would allow us to hear a female voice. Accordingly, this research wants to emphasize and study the theoretical assumptions that, in different ways, permeate the work of these scholars - regarding the conceptualization of the liaison between language/discourse and sex/gender of who enounces. In order to do so, a discussion will be held on the manners in which the issues of language, in interface with the discussions of feminist character, appear, especially in History and literature, drawing attention to the particularities that should be taken into account when dealing with the Greek poetic compositions produced in the Archaic period (VIII - VI BC) / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História
