Evaluating Public Value Failure in the Nonprofit Context: An Interpretive Case Study of Food Banking in the U.S.

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: In the U.S., one of the most affluent countries in the world, hunger and food waste are two social problems that coexist in an ironic way. Food banks have become one key alternative solution to those problems because of their capacity to collect and distribute surplus food to those in need as well as to mobilize collective efforts of various organizations and citizens. However, the understanding of U.S. food banking remains limited due to research gaps in the literature. Previous public values research fails to address the key role of nonprofit organizations in achieving public values, while prior nonprofit and food bank studies suffer from insufficiently reflecting the value-driven nature in evaluating overall social impacts. Inspired by these gaps, this study asks the following question: how does food banking in the U.S. respond to public value failure? To address this question, this study employs the interpretive approach as the logic of inquiry and the public value mapping framework as the analytic tool to contemplate the overall social impacts of U.S. food banking. Data sources include organizational documents of 203 U.S. food banks, as well as other public documents and literature pertaining to U.S. food banks. Using public value mapping analysis, this study constructs a public value logic, which manifests the dynamics of prime and instrumental values in the U.S. food banking context. Food security, sustainability, and progressive opportunity are identified as three core prime public values. Instrumental values in this context consist of two major value categories: (1) intra-organizational values and (2) inter-and ultra-organizational values. Furthermore, this study applies public value failure criteria to examine success or failure of public values in this context. U.S. Food banks do contribute to the success of public sphere, progressive opportunity, sustainability and food security. However, the practice of U.S. food banks also lead to the failure of food security in some conditions. This study develops a new public value failure criterion based on the inherent limitations of charitable service providers. Main findings, contributions, and future directions are discussed. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Public Administration 2017

This thesis focuses on analysis and implementation of CRM in non-profit organization. The main aim of this thesis is to analyse the choice of suitable CRM system for Open Society Fund Prague, while the part of implementation is covered in the thesis of Václav Bešta. To fulfil the main aim, it is necessary to extend knowledge gained during the study using additional information from specialised publications and electronic resources which relate to CRM and Fundraising. These are subsequently used in the practical part, which is the result of individual work and cooperation with V. Bešta and members of Open Society Fund Prague. The contribution of this thesis is a resultant product in form of chosen and suggested CRM system, which Open Society Fund Prague will use for its activities. Possible contribution is that this system can be used by another non-profit organisation. Moreover, the practical part of this thesis may serve as a manual, how to deal with a selection of suitable CRM system. This Thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part discusses and clarifies the meaning of CRM and Fundraising, describes possibilities of their interconnection and mentions research in works, dealing with similar topics. At first, the practical part describes Open Society Fund Prague. The thesis continues with the analysis of found requirements for the CRM system, which than helps to choose a suitable product for the foundation. At the end, the thesis mentions the implementation of a chosen system in Open Society Fund Prague, which is described in detail in the thesis of V. Bešta.

THE MOTIVATION OF NPO WORKERS FOR ACCEPTING INTERNATIONAL ASSIGNMENTS

Oberholster, Abraham Johannes 01 January 2011 (has links)
This dissertation explores the underresearched topic of the motivation of non-profit organizational (NPO) workers for accepting international assignments (IAs). In the literature review, the motivation and reasons for working and living outside the home country by multinational corporate expatriates, international migrants, and long-term international volunteers are summarized. With the reasons for expatriation distilled from the literature, a self-determination theory (SDT) approach, and open-ended questions, the motivations for NPO workers to accept IAs are factor analyzed and triangulated using data from a sample of more than 140 Christian mission and humanitarian workers originating from 25 countries and representing 48 sending organizations. Four NPO worker motivation profiles are tentatively identified and described using cluster analysis of the SDT motivations and Kruskal-Wallis analysis of the reasons of accepting an IA, individual cultural values, organizational commitment, and demographic variables. The NPO worker cluster groups include the Caring Internationalist, the Self-Directed Careerist, the Obedient Soldier, and the Movement-Immersed Worker. The findings hold implications for international human resource managers toward the effective recruitment, selection, training and development, career management, and support and encouragement of NPO expatriates with the goal of an increase in the incidence of expatriation assignment success.

The following study is about how non-profit organizations in Sweden with focus on social services utilize strategic planning in their organizations. Furthermore, the thesis addresses the existential challenges associated with the strategic planning process. In addition, the study also takes the possible benefits of strategic planning process into consideration. With help of interviews and previous research the thesis has managed to gain plentiful information regarding the strategic planning process, its possible challenges as well as the benefits associated with the process. After analyzing both the empirical and theoretical materials, the study has come to the conclusion that strategic planning is an integral factor for the non-profit organizations' success. This is because the strategic plan aids the non-profit organizations when it comes to defining its goals as well as achieving them. In addition, the strategic planning process creates a sense of community in the organizations. Conversations and discussions that arise during the process are valuable and create cohesion. However, there are some potential challenges as well pertaining to the strategic planning process, which are addressed in the study later. Despite all the possible challenges all non-profit organizations that have been interviewed state that the benefits of the strategic plan outweigh the costs generated by creating and implementing the strategic plan.
