Obligation as a relationship antecedent: A qualitative case study of the Las Vegas communityStrauss, Jessalynn Rosalia 09 1900 (has links)
xvi, 207 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This research develops Broom, Casey and Ritchey's (1997) concept of relationship antecedents, suggesting moral obligation as a non-consequential relationship antecedent. By using Bivins's (2009) classification of moral and functional obligations, this research suggests that nonprofit managers perceive a moral obligation on the part of gaming corporations to establish relationships that can benefit the local community. Where a functional obligation would affect the corporation's ability to do business, the moral obligation is non-consequential and falls outside the parameters of the six consequential relationship antecedents identified by Grunig and Huang (2000).
Business ethicists have long debated the need for corporate social responsibility, broadly defined as the idea that a corporation has a responsibility to society separate from its profit-making obligation to stockholders. This research looks at corporate social responsibility in the gaming industry in Las Vegas, examining nonprofit managers' expectations for these corporations to contribute to the local community. This study examines through qualitative interviews these managers' perceptions about the responsibility of gaming corporations to participate in and give back to the local community.
This research also sheds light on Las Vegas, NV, recognized more often for its architecture and cultural zeitgeist than for the contours of its community. A background section on Las Vegas history and its development as a tourist destination provides context for an examination of the ways Las Vegas's nonprofit organizations interact with the city's dominant industry. Nonprofit managers perceive gaming corporations as under- involved in the local community; in addition, they believe the community is under- informed about these efforts, potentially leading to a low level of civic engagement.
This research also examines corporate social responsibility in the context of the economic downturn that began September 2008. Because Las Vegas's economy is so heavily dependent on the gaming and tourism industries, the city provides an excellent location in which to examine how economic forces affect corporate social responsibility efforts. The significant decline in CSR from the gaming corporations, as reported by nonprofit managers. suggests an orientation to CSR that is more functional than moral. / Committee in charge: Patricia Curtin, Chairperson, Journalism and Communication;

This thesis concerns about the adaptation of “MEIO” – A model that integrates strategy, indicators and operations – proposed by Müller (2003), to small and medium-sized nonprofit organizations. This model aims to integrate Strategic Planning, Business-Process Management and Performance Measurement. One of its characteristics is the flexibility that allows the organizations to apply ‘MEIO’ at any of its modules, depending on their development’s stage in management. Initially, theoretical information is given aiming a better knowledge of management elements and the reality on nonprofit organizations. To support the correspondence of the method, data was collected from three different sources: (i) interviews that establish the profiles and development’s level of the organizations focus of this study; (ii) a research about private foundations and nonprofit associations in Brazil made by IBGE (2005) – “Private Foundations and Nonprofit Associations in Brazil 2002”; and (iii) a case study carried out in a nonprofit organization that provides the necessary understanding of the tools used in the method and the universe where the model is applied. Due to conclusion based on the reviews and data, a more suitable model is proposed. This new model fits better the goals and profiles of small and medium-sized organizations. Finally, it is important to mention that this model is not universal, since it hasn’t been tested in other organizations, suggesting then a follow up of this study.

The literature for the Non Profit Sector has been characterized by the dissemination of performance measurement methodologies originated from the for profit sector. These methods are controversial, limited and present solutions that many times do not keep relation with the reality of those organizations. The traditional accounting procedures in the measurement of intangible values are considered insufficient to explain the value added by social actions, leading to reduce the practical use of the financial accounting information and to search for alternative forms of calculation. Through the use of substitute references (proxies) for the calculation of the value added and without intending to get a standard and definitive measure, due to the existing volatility in social values, it was possible to arrange hidden data that are capable to explain the relevance of the voluntary workers. This thesis studied three organizations, Grupo de Apoio ao Adolescente e à Criança com Câncer GRAACC, Fundação Nacional da Qualidade FNQ and Fundação ABRINQ Programa Adotei um Sorriso, that in common possess the use of the voluntary work under distinct forms, identifying their value creation through the use of two models: the Expanded Value Added Model (DVAE) that presents the value difference that goes between the financial results and the financial results increased by the value of the voluntary work added to the value of its intellectual growth. This model also distributes the value generated to the stakeholders, on the basis of its contributions to the viability of the OSFL and identifying its importance in the total value created; the Social Return on Investment model (SROI) considers as output the contribution values of voluntary work, success of the mission accomplishiments, voluntary growth and its satisfaction calculated through proxies;the values from the financial statements and the contribution values of voluntary work, are considered as inputs. Instead of adopting values of official programs as output, this solution tends to reduce the effect of imported errors of those programs because they tend to have a closer relation with the reality of the OSFL. This thesis presents the relevance of the value added by the voluntary work that can represent an increase in value of as much 34% to 98% over the financial accounting figures and up to 42% to 98% when the mission accomplishments values are added in, confirming its inadequacy for the stakeholders managerial usage

Strategy formulation and implementation in non-profit organisations in the Nelson Mandela MunicipalityButler, Lauren January 2015 (has links)
Literature indicates that the sustainability of Non-Profit Organisations (NPOs) is important as they provide pivotal services to the community. In this study, the researcher investigates common problems associated with strategy formulation and implementation in NPOs in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. The researcher reports on the importance of strategy within all organisations and outlines a strategy process that can be used as a guide to measure strategic planning in NPOs. In pursuit of conducting qualitative research, a self-constructed questionnaire was used to perform telephonic interviews with managers of NPOs. The study yielded a low response rate, but based on the analysis of the data collected, findings indicate that the main problem is not with strategy formulation or implementation, but with the understanding of the concept of strategic planning. During the interview process, it became evident that there is a common misconception that the annual operations planning constitutes a strategic plan. A major limitation to this study was the absence of a benchmark against which to measure success. Unlike a for-profit organisation where success is measured by profit margins, NPOs have different priorities and therefore successful strategic planning differs from one organisation to another. A recommendation for managers at NPOs is that they start thinking strategically about their organisation, its planning, and methods for doing so (which is discussed in Chapter Five).

The Mediating Role of Professional Membership Associations Through the Prism of Organizational Social CapitalSaitgalina, Marina 08 1900 (has links)
Civil society emphasizes the importance for citizens to be involved and developed in association with other people. The importance of socialization for citizens to learn civic values and develop virtues of tolerance and solidarity is generated by voluntary associations. Mediating structures are the entities that help to integrate disconnected elements of civil society and strengthen communities. Social capital is one of the elements that is actively utilized by mediating structures to connect people to, and get involved with others in mobilizing their efforts collectively for both public and private causes through volunteering. Traditionally only charitable nonprofits were perceived to be mediating structures. However, there are scattered examples of non-charitable professional membership 501(c)(6) associations engaging themselves and their members in social programs and community volunteering unaccountable for in the literature. Using the theories of mediating structures and social capital this research questions the assumption of limited applicability of mediating structures. Extensive empirical analysis of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) dataset is performed to determine how social capital and other organizational factors affect the performance of mediating roles by professional membership associations.
