Simulation numérique de jets liquides cisaillés par une phase rapide : dynamique de battement à grande échelle et intéraction avec les structures tourbillonnaires / Numerical simulation of liquid jets sheared by a high-speed stream : flapping dynamics and interaction with vortical structures

Odier, Nicolas 18 December 2014 (has links)
Fuel injection in an aircraft engine or in a rocket engine involves a liquid jet sheared by a high-velocity gas. The liquid jet can display, under some specific conditions, a flapping motion. This flapping motion, the basic mechanisms of which are still poorly understood, can significantly impact the combustion process. We perform in this work a numerical study of liquid jets interacting with a high-speed stream and focus on the interactions between the vortical structures in this high-speed stream and the liquid jet. A plane liquid jet surrounded by two high-speed streams is first analysed. The mechanisms leading to the flapping motion are studied, as well as the passive control of this instability. A liquid coaxial jet, sheared by an annular high speed stream, is next analysed. The mechanisms leading to the flapping motion are also analysed, as well as passive and active strategies for controlling this instability. Finally, we perform simulations of an experimental set-up studied at LEGI, focusing on the flow inside the nozzle.

Étude expérimentale et modélisation d’un plasma de vapeurs métalliques dans une ampoule à vide pour le développement de disjoncteurs Haute-Tension / Experimental study and modelling of a metal vapor plasma in a vacuum chamber for the development of High-Voltage Circuit Breakers

Tezenas du Montcel, Benoît 29 May 2018 (has links)
Ce modèle a permis d’étudier le comportement du plasma d’arc en fonction des intensités du courant d’arc et de l’AMF et de la distance inter-électrodes / In the frame of a project investigating the possibility to replace SF6 by vacuum as a breaking medium in High-Voltage circuit breakers, a study that focusses on acquiring a better understanding of the behavior of a metal vapor arc at long contact gap (> 10 mm) and controlled by an axial magnetic field (AMF) has been undertaken. The study involves first the building of an experimental setup where arcs, created between two fixed CuCr25 contacts, were visualized using a high-speed camera in a vacuum demountable chamber. Various types of arc regime have been observed. Moreover, by means of a numerical method of detection of the cathode spots, we were able to study the evolution of the spatial distribution of the cathode spots, to measure the average current carried by a spot and to determine the average radial profile of the current density at the cathode surface. This study had also for object the development of a 2D-axisymetric and quasi-steady magnetohydrodynamic model of the hydrodynamic flow region of the arc based on a two-fluid approach. The model allows to simulate the supersonic and the subsonic diffuse arc regimes. It is used to study the arc behavior as a function of to the arc current, the AMF intensity and the contact gap

Large Eddy Simulation Studies of Island Effects in the Caribbean Trade Wind Region

Jähn, Michael 01 March 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, the fully compressible, three-dimensional, nonhydrostatic atmospheric model called All Scale Atmospheric Model (ASAM) is utilized for large eddy simulations (LES) to investigate local island effects at the Caribbean. Since the model has not been applied to LES for moist boundary layers and heterogeneous surfaces so far, several parts are added to the model code or reworked. A special focus lies on the inclusion of orographical structures via the cut cell method. Spatial and temporal discretization as well as necessary physical parameterizations are summarized in a thorough model description. The robustness of the model formulation is confirmed by a set of idealized test case simulations. Large eddy simulations are performed for the area of the Caribbean island Barbados to investigate island effects on boundary layer modification, cloud generation and vertical mixing of aerosols. Due to the presence of a topographically structured island surface in the domain center, the model setup has to be designed with open lateral boundaries. In order to generate inflow turbulence consistent with the upstream marine boundary layer forcing, the newly developed cell perturbation method based on finite amplitude perturbations is applied. Observations from the SALTRACE field campaign are used to initialize the model runs. Several numerical sensitivity tests are carried out to demonstrate the problems related to \"gray zone modeling\" beyond LES scales or when the turbulent marine boundary layer flow is replaced by laminar winds. Especially cloud properties west of Barbados (downwind) are markedly affected in these simulations. Results of an additional simulation with a strong trade-wind inversion reveal its effect on cloud layer depth and height. The modification of Saharan dust layers reaching Barbados via long-range transport over the North Atlantic is analyzed. Effects of layer thinning, subsidence and turbulent downward transport near the layer bottom become apparent. The position of these layers and strength of downward mixing is found to be mainly controlled atmospheric stability, inversion strength and wind shear. Comparisons of LES model output with wind lidar data show similarities in the formation of the daytime convective plume and the vertical wind structure.

Industrial steel storage racks subjected to static and seismic actions: an experimental and numerical study

Bernardi, Martina 16 November 2021 (has links)
Industrial steel storage racks are pre-engineered lightweight structures commonly used to store goods from supermarkets to big warehouses. These systems are framed structures, usually made of cold-formed steel profiles and characterised by non-standard details. Their performance is quite complex and the prediction of their global response is more difficult than for the traditional steel frames. This difficulty is due to the racks’ main features: the use of cold-formed thin-walled steel sections which are sensitive to different buckling modes, the presence of regular perforation patterns on the uprights, the highly non-linear behaviour of joints, the influence of the structural imperfections and the significant frame sensitivity to second order effects. The behaviour of racks becomes even more complex when seismic or accidental events induce significant horizontal forces acting on the structures. The complexity and variability that characterise racks make it difficult to identify general design solutions. Hence, racks design is traditionally carried out by using the “design by testing” approach, which requires the experimental characterisation of the main structural components, of the joints and the sub-assemblies. The complexity of the racks also affects their numerical modelling, which results in complex analyses that must take into account all the aforementioned features. The work presented in this thesis focuses on the study of a typical steel pallet rack, identified as case study. The research aims to contribute to building up a comprehensive knowledge of the response of both the main rack components and of the whole structure. The main rack components were first individually studied. The behaviour of the uprights, of the base-plate joints and of the beam-to-column joints was experimentally investigated. The experimental data were then taken as reference for the calibration of FE models that enabled exploring each component’s performance. These models were then incorporated into the whole rack model. The response of the uprights was first investigated through stub column tests. The non-negligible interaction between axial force and bending moment of the upright response was then experimentally and numerically analysed to define the M-N domains. In addition, the rules provided by different European standards for the design of isolated members subjected to combined axial load and bending moment were considered and critically compared, identifying the main critical issues of the different design approaches. Although the contribution of joints on the rack global response is of paramount importance, to date, the knowledge is quite limited. In particular, the experimental studies of the behaviour of base-plate joints are still rather modest, especially for the cyclic range. Therefore, an experimental campaign on the rack base-plate joints was carried out: three levels of axial load were considered and the response in both the down-aisle and the cross-aisle direction was investigated under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Similarly, the beam-to-column joint was tested both monotonically and cyclically, taking into account its non-symmetric behaviour. Numerical models for both joint types were developed and validated enabling the characterisation of joints in the monotonic and cyclic range. This in-depth knowledge of the response of individual components facilitated the evaluation of the global rack behaviour. As a final stage of the research, full-scale tests of four-level two-bay racks were performed taking advantage of an innovative full-scale testing set-up and, on the basis of the experimental outcomes, the racks’ global behaviour was numerically investigated. Critical standards issues and needs for future research were further identified.

Capa Guachón, Vicente Eduardo 22 March 2021 (has links)
[EN] The "Soil Nailing" technique is a ground reinforcement procedure used consistently to stabilize slopes and land sections in geotechnical engineering projects. This technique is frequently used in the city of Quito (Ecuador) to reinforce the ground and improve slope stability during the excavation process for various underground parking levels. Such deep excavations are common in the city's most important real estate projects, in which "Soil Nailing" is used with different variations that are adjusted in accordance with the construction resources available in the particular environment. Despite its widespread use, this technique which has proven to be so effective in stabilizing excavations during the construction of underground structures in the soils of the city of Quito, currently suffers from a lack of local theoretical, numerical or experimental research based on the geotechnical properties of the city's characteristic soils. This Doctoral Thesis was supported by the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory and the Structures Laboratory of the Concrete Science and Technology Institute (ICITECH) of the Universitat Politècnica de València. It presents an experimental and numerical study of the behavior of two excavations reinforced with the Soil Nailing technique for the construction of the basement structures of two important buildings located in the north-central area of the city of Quito. Both the experimental and the numerical study focus mainly on the stress of tension forces exerted on the steel bars of the "Soil Nails", analysis of horizontal wall displacements and analysis of settlements of the ground behind the walls, which were induced by the construction of each underground level. As part of the numerical analysis through finite elements, different constitutive soil models were considered, the parameters of which were determined in detail in accordance with laboratory testing from the geotechnical characterization study for this research. This Doctoral Thesis, therefore, constitutes one of the first complete studies in the region aimed at explaining the experimental and numerical behavior of excavations through the Soil Nailing technique, supported by complete geotechnical characterization work which was carried out for the purpose of forming part of this study. / Capa Guachón, VE.
The original results of the dissertation are contained in ch. 2, 3 and 4, and concern mainly the problem of business cycles. In ch. 2 we explore numerically a 3D discrete Kaldorian macrodynamic model of open economy with fixed exchange rates. Using a grid search method we determine the stability region in parameter space, and the Hopf-Neimark bifurcation curve, and discuss briefly the occurrence of Arnold tongues. Bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent diagrams are computed providing information on the business cycles and illustrating the complex dynamics involved. Examples of cycles and chaotic attractors are presented. In ch. 3 we explore a 5D extension of the previous model using the same methods. The aim was to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the numerical approach for discrete dynamical systems of moderately high dimensionality and several parameters. We found that capital movement is not sufficient to generate interregional business cycles when trade interaction is low. The trade threshold is predicted at about 15% of trade transactions. By contrast, no minimum level of capital mobility exists as a requirement for the emergence of business cycles. Examples of bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent diagrams illustrating the occurrence of cycles or period doubling, and examples of their development, are given. Ch. 4 contains a short description of complementary results on the above models, and on two other models which extend the previous models to the case of flexible exchange rates, as well as some lines of future research. In ch. 5, the computational techniques employed in the present study are briefly described. The dissertation indicates the effectiveness of the numerical approach for high dimensional discrete models.
