Abstract : Frequent discussions about security on university campuses, as well as the increasing media disclosure of the crimes that occur within these sites, do not seem to have the right repercussion on the physical planning of these institutions. With the purpose of bringing this discussion to academic research, we investigate the physical characteristics of space that may be associated with the highest and lowest occurrence of crimes on university campuses, conducting an empirical study on the campus of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Rector João David Ferreira Lima, in Florianópolis-SC. This study is predominantly qualitative character, which through a descriptive procedure, based on a theoretical model created by the author, analyzes and relates the following variables: quantity of criminal occurrences of theft and robbery (dependent); Physical characteristics - visual range (visual barriers and intervisibility), visual connections, presence of "hiding places", functional connections, permeability, number of people walking through the site, variety of land use, attractors, lighting, appearance of the site and resources Security (independent); And economic characterization of the environment and values of goods for theft and theft (of control). The analysis sites (parking lots, bicycle paths and paths) were selected in pairs, being formed by sites with contrasting crime rates, so that it was possible to compare their physical characteristics. The results of this thesis confirm that the studied variables influence in different ways the types of crimes investigated in their respective places of analysis (parking lots, bicycle paths). Better visibility of the environment as well as good looks are associated with fewer criminal occurrences. On the other hand, the greater movement of people and the permeability of spaces are associated with less occurrences in the crimes of robbery and robbery of vehicles and robbery of passersby, but not in the crime of robbery of / on bicycles. Thus, greater knowledge about physical characteristics that may influence the occurrence of crimes seems to be necessary for planners and architects to be aware of how their design decisions by potentiating or restricting the movement of people, visibility at the site, among other characteristics, may provide or inhibit the occurrence of crimes.

University - community relationships : towards a cooperative planning policy in university districts with special reference to university community areas in British Columbia

Gambhir, Raj Kumar January 1966 (has links)
The planning of University District in British Columbia suffers from lack of effective coordination among various jurisdictional units which comprise the University Community Area. The growth needs of campuses are planned Independently of the needs of urban municipalities. There are numerous situations which call for the merger of decision making and administrative functions of individual organizations Into one cooperative planning body which should have the task of planning an-i development of university Areas within the framework of a long range comprehensive plan. But the existing cooperative arrangement are ad hoc committees or other working agreements which do not promote the kind of planning necessary in these districts. The objective of this Study is to find out the limitations of Informal and ad hoc administrative arrangements for mutual planning and to propose more effective methods of cooperative planning. It is hypothesized that the integration of campus planning with the long-range comprehensive planning of adjacent municipal areas is essential for the effective development of the University District. Case studies of three University Districts in British Columbia, including a comprehensive review of other studies undertaken elsewhere, are presented as research methods in support of this hypothesis. It is evident from these studies that a University has a profound effect on the evolution of its surrounding urban areas. The University demand for off-campus housing and services, plus the prestige and compelling attractions of the campus for other related educational institutions, research Industries, clubs, galleries, museums and high-quality residential, business and professional establishments, all Influence the character of adjacent municipal areas. If a campus happens to be located in an undeveloped or farming area, the growth of the campus tends to accelerate the rate of urbanization in the surrounding area, eventually displacing farming with other land uses which tend to locate in areas adjacent to the campus. If on the other hand the adjacent area was originally developed as a single family residential district, the campus modifies it to satisfy higher density residential, Institutional, industrial, cultural and service area requirements. Such an evolution of the University District is accompanied by a number of conflicts among jurisdictional units and other interest groups. In general, the conflicts centre on the amount of land necessary for university expansion, the type of housing and services required, and the provision of adequate facilities for pedestrian and vehicular movement between the campus and the adjacent community. The liaison among different administrative entities comprising the University District is by the formation of ad hoc committees of officials. It is evident from this study that an ad hoc arrangement seldom has the effectiveness (i.e. power to implement a plan), efficiency, permanency and financial support and rules to govern its deliberations and activities, which all combine to form the type or organization needed for the planning and development of the University District. A formal organization for cooperative planning involving precise understanding and long range commitments of the various administrative and political entitles with some form of enacting Interdependent legislation Is recommended. The University District Planning Commission for each university area is proposed as a method for comprehensive long range planning of the University Districts. It is evident that the study hypothesis, the integration' of Campus Planning with the long-range comprehensive planning of adjacent municipal areas is essential for the effective development of University Districts, Is quite valid. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), School of / Graduate

Campus trollbäcken

Hellström, Isak January 2017 (has links)
Fornuddsparken is located in Trollbäcken in Tyresö and the new school is placed at the beginning of the park area. I decided to meet the site's small scale by a low, flat building that takes into account the surrounding landscape.   From Trollbäcken center is a clear connection to the park that I wanted to keep, why have my structure a release that maintains the existing line of sight to the park and the water when coming from the center.   An important starting point for me has been working with the school yard. It is important for children learning to identify itself with locations in the school, they can make them their own and feel safe. Therefore, I examined how by splitting the program into different volumes can create different types of conservatories.   Low, middle and high school are divided into different parts and thus have their own spaces that are more closely related to each unit. The common functions are centrally located in the structure.   A thought of splitting the program has been to meet the site's small-scale approach and smaller settlements.   The different volumes and the overall structure is held together by its external shape and the boundary between the school begins and ends is thus defined in a clear way. Volumes are turning towards the school and the movement goes into the corridor to give life and transparency to the schoolyards.

Investigation into attitudes of University of Zululand students towards campus psychological services

Mkwanyana, Nhlakanipho Lawrence January 2013 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master in Arts Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Zululand, South Africa, 2013. / The main aim of this study was to investigate the attitudes of the University of Zululand students towards campus psychological services made available to them. The sample for the study was made up of a total of ten (10) participants; consisted of four (4) male and six (6) female participants. The results showed that female students of the University of Zululand were more likely, than their male counterparts, to seek professional help from the campus psychological services. It was also found that most students in their first and second years at the University of Zululand were less likely, than their final year and postgraduate counterparts, to proactively seek out psychological services. It was equally observed that although all participants admitted to have had psychological and emotional problems but not all of them sought psychological help. It was further observed that the students’ lack of awareness about the availability of campus psychological services was congruent with their perception that there was no need for psychological services at the University of Zululand. Although some students may be aware of the availability of the psychological services and some have utilized them, they do not often chat about the psychological services. This may be attributed to the fact that they share common beliefs and values; that it is better to communicate with those within their social circles instead of talking to a psychologist. The findings suggested that those who utilized and thus advised others about psychological services, started by communicating with their friends before seeking psychological services. It also became evident that seeking professional help may not be a common primary step among the University of Zululand students.
