A Study on the Principles for the Operation and Management of the Dolphin and Whale Watching Industry along the Eastern Coast of Taiwan

Kuo, Yen-Ruey 12 September 2001 (has links)
ABSTRACT Title: A Study on the Principles for the Operation and Management of the Dolphin and Whale Watching Industry along the Eastern Coast of Taiwan Author: Yen-Ruey Kuo The dolphin and whale watching industry has become one of the most thriving tourism industries in Taiwan in recent years, and as such, a comprehensive system of operation and management is required to help secure its sustainable development. This thesis focuses on the eastern coast of Taiwan where dolphin and whale watching first developed earliest in Taiwan and where the largest portion of operators in the business is located. Based on personal interviews following carefully-designed questionnaires with local experienced operators, skippers and narrators, this thesis studies and analyzes the present conditions of local operations and management within four aspects of the development of the industry, namely marketing strategies, environmental and ecological protection, social justice and general institutional issues. It also presents suggestions concerning sustainable development in the dolphin and whale watching industry along the eastern coast of Taiwan. Finally, according to the suggestions provided by operators and managers, domestic and foreign references and/or personal observation, the thesis proposes fifteen principles for the sustainable development for the dolphin and whale watching industry. The first ever for Taiwan, these principles are believed to be invaluable in further developing the required indicators and/or guidelines for the sustainable development of the dolphin and whale watching industry in Taiwan.

A simulation approach for modelling and investigation of inventory inaccuracy in warehouse operation

Kamaludin, Adzhar January 2010 (has links)
This thesis is focused on a simulation modelling approach to address the inventory inaccuracy problems in a warehouse operation. The main motivation which led to this research was a desire to investigate the inventory inaccuracy issues that have been highlighted by a logistics company. Previous and current research into inventory inaccuracy issues is largely related to the development of RFID technology as a possible solution to inventory problems. Since the inventory inaccuracy related to RFID technology is focused on the overall measurement of inventory management and retail business, there are differences between this existing research and the research presented in this thesis which is focused on issues of inventory inaccuracy in a warehouse operation. In this thesis, warehouse operation is studied as a detailed sequence of processes that are involved in the flow of items physically in parallel with related information being stored in the computer system. In these processes there are many places where errors can occur in counting or recording details of inventory, or in physically moving, storing or picking items incorrectly. These details of a warehouse operation are used to develop a conceptual model of inventory inaccuracy in warehouse operations. The study also found that typically a product needs to be considered differently at different stages of its progress through a warehouse (and therefore within different sections of the conceptual model). This is because initially batches of a product are likely to be delivered from a supplier, therefore if errors occur soon after the product is delivered to the warehouse, the error might involve the whole batch (for example the batch may be misplaced and put in an incorrect storage location), or the error might involve just part of the batch (for example poor transportation by forklift truck may damage the packaging carton and some of the items within the carton). When the product is stored ready for meeting customer orders, it needs to be considered as individual items (and errors can occur in counting of individual items or individual items may be misplaced or stolen). Finally, when a customer order is received, the product will be picked and grouped to meet the requirements of the order (for example, one order may require 10 of the product whilst another order may require 20 of the product). Errors might again occur to the whole group or to just part of the group. (Continued ...)

Methodology for planning the convergence of Information Technology (IT) & Automation Technology (TA) in process industries.

Silva, Elcio Brito da 18 October 2013 (has links)
The intensification of the economic globalization process and the increasing interdependence of markets has been imposing a growing need for improving the competitiveness of all industrial sectors. The convergence of information technology (IT) and automation technology (AT) of productive sectors and administrative corporations is a powerful tool for achieving the high levels of efficiency and effectiveness required in the competitive scenarios of current markets. Despite the progress in connectivity achieved by both technologies, the process of IT & AT integration is complex and presents significant challenges in terms of collaboration between the IT, AT professionals and the production engineers that goes beyond the technical aspects of the convergence. This work presents the development of a methodology for planning the convergence of technology assets, named methodology for planning the convergence of AT & IT technology (MPCTAI) , which aims to reduce the risks involved in the integration of IT & AT, outlines the development planning for convergence to critical success factors (CSF) of the company. This also presents the application of the MPCTAI methodology in a process of convergence and the results for an important company in the sector of products for building construction, as well the results achieved.

Buildings in the Digital Era : An Explorative Study of Digital Twins in the Built Environment

Kästel, Siw Kristine, Wallén, Joanna January 2024 (has links)
In recent years, digital twins (DT) have gained traction in enhancing operation and maintenance procedures across various industrial sectors, such as manufacturing, energy, and aerospace. Yet their utilization remains more limited in the built environment. The aim of this paper is to investigate the current conceptualizations of DTs within the context of the Swedish built environment, shedding light on the maturity of DTs for built assets and the key value drivers influencing their adoption. The study reveals that DTs for built assets are in early developmental stages, lacking the maturity required to encompass the full spectrum of attributes inherent in a conventional DT. Despite stakeholders labeling these initiatives as DTs, our findings indicate a closer alignment with the concept of BIM-based digital models. This observation resonates with existing literature, highlighting the absence of a universally accepted definition for DTs. Within the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) phase, we have identified the following four primary value drivers shaping the adoption of BIM-based DTs: 1) commercial transparency and trusted transactions, 2) efficiency and cost reduction in routine operations, 3) operational continuity, and 4) added services. These findings contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the convergence of BIM and DTs, offering insights into the practical implications and value propositions that drive the integration of these technologies within the built environment.
