Performing Race, Performing History: Oral Histories of Sundown Towns in Southern Illinois

Esquibel, Elena 01 May 2011 (has links)
Sundown towns are communities with a history of excluding African Americans and that are predominantly White on purpose. Although sundown towns have inevitably changed over time, a number of them continue to be alarmingly White, and their reputations continue to persist. Sundown towns are widespread across the U.S. and despite their prevalence, very little research exists on the topic. Furthermore, sundown towns were largely maintained through oral tradition. In this dissertation, I explore oral history interviews with community residents about the history of sundown towns in southern Illinois. Based on over two years of fieldwork, I examine how community narratives construct present realities of sundown towns in new and nuanced ways. I am also interested in how these narratives function. I argue that race is central to investigating the history of sundown towns and use performance as an analytical tool to understand racial dimensions in community members' stories. I examine how everyday community narratives reveal racialized performances and construct current manifestations of sundown towns. I further examine the process of translating these narratives into a staged performance. Ultimately, I argue that exploring everyday community narratives from the field to the stage allows a heuristic view of the living history of sundown towns. My approach to this study is deeply informed by critical performance ethnography and Critical Race Theory. These methods work together as modes of inquiry that enable analysis of community narratives as well as my role as a researcher, with the aspiration of social change. I enter this research with the agenda to deconstruct racist structures and add to social justice discourses. In this dissertation, I strive to create space for dialogue about sundown towns, race, and racism with various audiences and create possibilities for disrupting this history.

Uma época de restrições e impedimentos : alemães e descendentes em Rio Claro - SP na 1ª metade do século XX (1914-1945) /

Bovo, André Luiz January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The German Immigrants and their descendants from the municipality of Rio Claro - SP in the first half of the twentieth century suffered, as did the southern brazillian Germans, problems regarding the construction of the enemy during the World Wars, meaning a period of persecution and prejudice suffered by them, whose intensity was scaled not only by the Vargas government, but also by the population when they had access to rumors and falsities about this ethnic group in Brazil. To know the stories that such immigrants and descendants lived in this period, the research utilizes the methodology of Oral History, which through the recording of reports of those who lived the period or who were told the stories, it is possible to access a source that, due to the natural consequences of the passage of time and memory, could be lost. Thus, in conjunction with the methodology of Oral History, a mixture of theories and methodologies is used, which aim a better reading of the interviews and the situation of this ethnic group. Therefore, the study of the oral report is approached through Bakhtinian concepts of “dialogism”, “Voices of discourse” and “discursive genres” in union with the sociology of the body of David Le Breton; As for their ethnicity and identity Norbert Elias's concepts of “habitus” and Fredrik Barth's “ethnicity” are used, and for when ethnicity was stigmatized Irving Goffman's studies were used to understand when their identity was attacked; and the use of Halbwachs' Co... Čeští kaskadéři - od těžkých začátků až ke světové špičce / Czech Stuntmen - From Hard Beginnings to World's Elite

Kolářová, Denisa January 2017 (has links)
The aim of the work is to extend the hitherto superficial knowledge of the history and development of the profession of Czech film stuntmen, from the 1960s to the post- revolutionary period with overlapping to the present. Using the oral history method (combined with available sources), the work will focus on professional development. Attention will be paid to the creation of a profession as such, key films or contacts with foreign productions. Other subtopics include stunt training, stunt equipment, or a woman's view of this predominantly male occupation. Topics will be reflected in pre- revolutionary and post-revolutionary years. Subsequently, the stumbling block will be evaluated by the greatest professional differences that have occurred over the years.. Key words: Stuntmen, horses, filming, oral history, dangers

Dělníci autorského práva. Agentura DILIA v období tzv. normalizace ve vzpomínkách tehdejších zaměstnanců / Copyright workers. The agency DILIA during the time of so-called normalization in memories of its employees

Burman, Markéta January 2019 (has links)
In this thesis, I present Dilia, the Theater and Literary Agency, at the time of so-called normalization from the perspective of its employees. On the basis of available documentation, the organization's history from the beginning of 1949 until 1990 (a time of revolutionary societal changes) is mapped. Then I describe the organizational structure and different scope of work of each department and afterwards I turn back to the history again, this time with the focus on historical events, especially during the time of so-called normalization. I present the events as they were related to corresponding changes in directorship. In this thesis, I discover on the background of the era how the former employees recall their everyday life. I recall the employees' recollections of everyday life, working and private, in the context of the era. These recollections include forced membership in social organizations. Ultimately, they assess their their lives the vantage of today.

Slávistická srdce v proměnách doby / Slavia fans in the changing times

Stehlíková, Jana January 2020 (has links)
Sports spectators is free entertainment for millions of people around the world. Here I will focus on football spectators who have in their heart the club SK Slavia Praha, who is one of the oldest football club in our country and have a fan base. As the name suggests, I will be interested in the phenomenon of a football fan, which differs from the viewer, among other things, that he identifies with his club. The main aspect of this work will be a comparison of two historical sections, the period before and after the fall of the communist regime in 1989 and Police supervision is connected. I will also be interested in the relationship to the biggest rival within AC Sparta Praha, or the possibility of club artifacts, which are now available in a wealth of, but always be. Even fans have their asociations. Aside from the fact that they are associated fan support such as an expert and tribune, which have great influence as a club support and at the end of the work focusing on their relationship to the club, why they chose Slavia and what it means for them. For this work I chose the method of qualitative research, which oral history and field research, which I found due to the nature of the work appropriate. Key words: sports spectators, SK Slavia Praha, football fans, oral history

Kompetence tazatele při práci s traumatickými životními vzpomínkami narátorů: možnosti a meze využití psychoterapeutických přístupů v orálně-historické praxi / Interviewer's competencies in working with narrator's traumatic life memories: psychotherapeutic approaches in oral history practice - possibilities and limits

Jaroš, Martin January 2020 (has links)
This diploma thesis is working with the method of grounded theory and aims by means of interdisciplinary synthesis contributing to the enrichment of values for researchers practicing the method of oral history, who's become its current representatives. Diploma thesis that is based on the premise that connection of historical sciences and psychologies or practical psychotherapy (which have a certain ethical-moral appeal and have a broader knowledge of the human soul) could be enriching for the practice of oral history. Research of psychological and psychotherapeutic approaches to the practice of oral history is not just a theoretical self-synthesis, but the work is enriched by practical experiences from clinical practice of auxiliary specialists (psychologists and therapists), who were asked about theoretical questions firstly, then about few questions about trauma presence in typical interviews with four narrator. Narrator`s participate in project "Memory of the Nation" and it is possible to assume potential existence of trauma inside them - looking at their life experiences. Uncut version of the material - without proofreading contains the potential inventions of the interviewers. One of the starting point of the work is that part of the population met with trauma (means a strong stressor) in...
