Organisational information security management: The impact of training and awareness. Evaluating the socio-technical impact on organisational information security policy management.

Security breaches have attracted attention from corporations and scholars alike. The major organisations are determined to stop security breaches as they are detrimental to their success. Arguably the most common factor contributing to these breaches is employee behaviour, which suggests that changes in employee behaviour can have an impact on improving security. This research aims to study the critical factors (CFs) that impact on employee behaviours toward compliance with their organisation¿s information security policy. This investigation will focus on the various critical success factors based on their grouping into one of the following three major categories, namely: organisational factors, behavioural factors and training factors. Each of these categories affects a different aspect of information security and the objective is to not only understand the interaction of different factors but also to study further the aims in order to provide practical recommendations for improving organisational information security management. This study has utilised empirical research through the use of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to inform each stage of the research. This study focused on the health, business and education sectors by empirically evaluating the obstacles and success factors that affect employee compliance to organisational security policies. In addition, this study also evaluated the affect of the socio-technical impact on organisational information security management. The final stage of the research focused on developing an effective training and awareness programme. This training programme was constructed by incorporating the techniques that were identified as enhancing employee perceptions, attitudes and motivations, in order to facilitate a better transference of skills and more sustainable and appropriate behaviours to improve organisational information security management in the workplace. The techniques utilised included: effective communication, knowledge reinforcement, pre- and post-assessment and motivational techniques.

An investigation of factors affecting the adoption of e-payment system in Libya

Electronic payment systems (EPS) have received considerable attention from researchers and business owners worldwide, because of their potential to support economic development and growth. Despite the significant contribution of the growth in EPS to the ability to complete transactions via the Internet, Libya lags significantly behind developed countries in its adoption of EPS. This research focuses on factors affecting EPS adoption and use in Libya, explaining how they positively or negatively affect Libyan customers and organisations‟ willingness to adopt EPS. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders, including consumers, organisational staff (e.g. Telecommunications Companies, Banks, the Ministry of Telecommunication and Informatics, etc.), and strategic decision-makers (e.g. the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, Director of Islamic Banking at Bank of Republic). The research implements Grounded Theory methods (GT), in particular the Straussian approach, to analyse, explore, and investigate the socio-organisational, technical, political, and economic factors affecting the adoption of EPS in Libya, and importantly the relationship between these factors. It discusses the impact of the factors identified, from both organisational and consumer perspectives, highlighting the factors and issues that need to be overcome to support successful adoption of EPS. The findings confirm that, for consumers and organisations alike, economic factors (e.g. perceived benefits, cooperation with existing entities, mutuality of stakeholders, Internet costs, standard of living, marketing businesses, awareness, withdrawal control, XX feasibility studies on EPS implementation, Islamic banking services and competition) are the core factors influencing the system‟s adoption. Furthermore, the findings revealed three new and significant factors of relevance to Libya, including standard of living, post coding and the unstable political situation in the country. These represent a unique contribution to the body of knowledge, illustrating the attitude of the Libyan people toward Internet usage, and current obstacles to EPS adoption. The use of substantive GT, in particular the Straussian approach, for data collection and data analysis in the field of EPS adoption, and the assessment of organisational and consumer attitudes, is unique to this research to the best of the researcher‟s knowledge. Thus, the research embodies a substantial contribution to the body of knowledge. The interpretive analysis of data using a Straussian approach has permitted the researcher to attain a deep understanding of the socio-organisational, economic, political, and technical factors affecting adoption of an E-payment system in Libya, as implemented by different stakeholders: Consumers, and Organisational. The benefits that the adoption of EPS in Libya will bring, include facilitation of online transactions, the availability of more secure websites, easier payment and access to the global markets. Furthermore, detailed recommendations are also being offered to assist decision-makers in the development and introduction of EPS in Libya, i.e. including the Communications and Informatics Ministry, which is hoped will advise internet service providers and companies to discount the cost of using the internet for limited bandwidths, in order to insure everyone access to the internet, and EPS.

Le harcèlement moral en milieu professionnel : le cas du service public hospitalier ukrainien / Moral harassment in work environment : the case of the ukrainian public hospital service

L’objectif principal de ce travail doctoral est de clarifier les relations existantes entre les facteurs organisationnels et le harcèlement moral dans le secteur public ukrainien afin de formuler des mesures de prévention de harcèlement psychologique en milieu organisationnel.A notre humble connaissance, c’est la première étude qui met la lumière sur l’état de harcèlement moral ainsi que sur ses déterminants en Ukraine, où la législation en matière de harcèlement est absente. Cette thèse a également pour ambition de tester l’impact des caractéristiques individuelles de la victime sur le harcèlement moral.Pour ce faire, nous avons mené notre étude en trois temps. Dans un premier temps, nous avons réalisé une analyse de 450 articles sur le sujet. L’objectif de cette étape était de cerner les principaux facteurs organisationnels influençant le harcèlement moral dans le milieu de l’entreprise à partir d’une définition précise : une durée minimale du harcèlement d’au moins 6 mois et une notion de répétitivité de l’acte d’une façon hebdomadaire ou mensuelle. Il s’est avéré que cinq types de facteurs contribuent à l’explication du harcèlement moral, à savoir : l’organisation du travail, le leadership, la culture organisationnelle et le climat social, le système de récompenses et les changements organisationnels.Dans un deuxième temps, nous avons réalisé une étude exploratoire qualitative visant à affiner les résultats d’analyse de la littérature par des éléments propres au terrain ukrainien. 12 entretiens semi-directifs ont été réalisés avec des spécialistes médicaux travaillant dans l’ hôpital obstétrique de Kharkiv (Ukraine). La finalité de cette étape s’est concrétisée par la construction du modèle de recherche.Enfin, dans un troisième temps, une étude confirmatoire quantitative nous a permis de tester statistiquement des liens entre quatorze facteurs organisationnels et trois dimensions du harcèlement moral.Le harcèlement moral a été mesuré à travers une méthode béhavioriste (NAQ, Einarsen et al., 1994). Pour mesurer les variables organisationnelles, nous avons constitué notre propre questionnaire en nous inspirant de plusieurs échelles de mesures testées et validées dans des recherches antérieures. Les démarches de validation transculturelle d’un questionnaire de Vallerand (1989) ont été ensuite appliquées.Au cours de cette étude quantitative, 243 personnes ont été questionnées. 35% sont victimes du harcèlement régulier durant les 6 mois précédant la recherche. Il ressort de notre analyse que le fait d’être un homme augmente la probabilité d’être harcelé. Quant aux facteurs organisationnels, il s’avère que le conflit de rôle, le conflit au travail, le soutien social et l’autorité décisionnelle sont les déterminants majeurs du harcèlement moral dans le contexte ukrainien. / The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to clarify the existing relations between organisational factors and mobbing in the Ukrainian public sector so to formulate the prevention measures of psychological harassment in the organisational area. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first research that shed light into the psychological harassment as well as on its factors in Ukraine, where the legislation to that matter is inexistent. This thesis has also the ambition to test the impact of individual characteristics of the victim with psychological harassment. To that end, we conducted a research in three steps. Firstly, an analysis of 450 articles has been realised. The aim of that step was to grasp the main organisation factors that influence psychological harassment in a company environment using a precise definition: a minimal harassment length of at least 6 months and a notion of repeatability of the act weekly or monthly. It appeared that five types of factors contribute to the explanation of psychological harassment, namely: work organisation, leadership, the organisational culture and social climate, the compensation and benefit system and organisation changes. Secondly, we led a qualitative exploratory research aiming to refine the results of the literature review with elements that are specific to the Ukrainian area. Twelve semi-structured interviews have been conducted with medical specialists working in obstetrics hospitals located in Kharkiv (Ukraine). The goal of this step resulted in the construction of the research model. Finally, a confirmatory quantitative study helped us to test statistically correlations between fourteen organisational factors and three dimensions of mobbing. Mobbing has been measured through a behavioural method (NAQ, Einarsen et al., 1994). In order to measure the organisation variables, we structured our own survey by inspiring us from several measuring scales tested and validated in previous studies. The transcultural validation steps of one survey of Vallerand (1989) have been applied. Through this quantitative research, 243 participants have been surveyed. Among those, 35% are regular harassment victims during 6 months preceding the research. The analysis brings out that the fact of being a man increases the likelihood of being harassed. When it comes to organisational factors, it turns out that role conflict, work conflict, social support and decision authority are all major determinants in moral harassment in the Ukrainian context.

Business Analytics Maturity Model : An adaptation to the e-commerce industry.

Maturity models have become a widely used framework for assessing various capabilities and technologies among businesses. This thesis develops a maturity model for assessing Business Analytics (BA) in Swedish e-commerce firms. Business Analytics has become an increasingly important part of modern businesses, and firms are continuously looking for new ways to perform analysis of the data available to them. The prominent previous maturity models within BA have mainly been developed by IT-consultancy firms with the underlying intent of selling their IT services. Consequently, these models have a primary focus on the technical factors towards Business Analytics maturity, partly neglecting the importance of organisational factors. This thesis develops a Business Analytic Maturity Model (BAMM) which fills an identified research gap of academic maturity models with emphasis on the organisational factors of BA maturity. Using a qualitative research design, the BAMM is adapted to the Swedish e-commerce industry through two sequential evaluation stages. The study finds that organisational factors have a greater impact on BA maturity than previous research suggests. The BAMM and the study's results contribute with knowledge of Business Analytics, as well as providing e-commerce firms with insights into how to leverage their data.

Trust issues : Welfare workers' relationship to their organisation

In the past decades, the public sector has undergone important organisational policy changes, referred to as New Public Management. These management strategies focus on continuous cost improvements and rationalisation of operations. In the aftermath of these policy changes, we have seen reports of increased work demands and less professional autonomy amongst welfare workers. Against this background, the thesis sets out to explore welfare workers’ relationship to their organisation. This was done by investigating how psychosocial and organisational factors related to a number of outcomes assumed to be indicators of the quality of the relationship. Theoretically, the thesis was inspired by psychological contract theory, but also relates to other concepts and theories found in organisational research. The thesis is based on four empirical studies, all of which relate to how welfare workers have perceived their relationship to their organisation. Study I aimed to qualitatively investigate how turnover processes evolved amongst statutory social workers who voluntarily had resigned from their jobs. The results showed that dismissive/admonishing organisational responses to the social workers’ perceived work-related dissatisfactions reinforced their beliefs in psychological contract violation, which led to resignation. Study II and III employed national web-based questionnaire data collected from employees and managers in the social services. The results of Studies II-III showed that if organisations want welfare workers to stop considering exit, want to counteract silence, want to reduce stress-related ill health and want to improve organisational commitment and job satisfaction, management strategies need to be developed that lead to fewer conflicting demands, a reasonable workload and a greater professional autonomy. The results also showed that the organisation’s open climate and attitude towards employees was of great importance for the studied outcome variables. Study IV was based on questionnaire data from different occupational groups in two municipal organisations. The results showed that organisational resources explained additional variance in organisational identification and organisational pride, beyond the contributions of workgroup resources. From the findings of this thesis, it can be concluded that the psychosocial demands need to be balanced with organisational resources in order to (re)build a trustworthy employee-organisation relationship. Further, organisations need to reconsider their human resource management strategies and practices, e.g., by enabling a continuous and open dialogue between the strategic and operational levels. Such changes may lead to balanced psychological contracts between welfare workers and the organisation that can improve the organisation’s stability, continuity and, ultimately, the quality of the welfare services.

Out of all the contributing factors, managerial factors have the greatest impact on hospital performance. In South Africa, despite the availability of policies and guidelines and adequate funding, hospital performance is still poor. This study investigates the different aspects of managerial performance, looking specifically at organisational factors such as organisational culture, available resources, and performance monitoring methods; as well as personal factors of the managers; namely, their focus on quality, and personal leadership styles and skills. The study is a quantitative cross-sectional descriptive survey, utilising questionnaires distributed at the two largest district hospitals in Vhembe District. The study was aimed at a total population sample of managers, doctors and professional nurses in the two hospitals. The study highlighted areas of management in the two hospitals studied that were commendable, as well as those needing urgent attention. There was a statistically significant association between managerial factors associated with hospital performance, and better perceptions of hospital performance. In particular, leadership skills such as motivation and dedication, methodical and logical management styles, and a hands-on approach had a significant contribution to perceptions of hospital performance. The study also highlighted the importance of good communication between senior management and subordinates. / NRF

The study uses the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Technology Readiness Index (TRI) as theories. This study has four objectives: (1) To identify the determinants of the use of mobile technology in supply chains of SMEs, (2) To determine the level of adoption of mobile technology in the supply chain of SMEs, (3)To determine the relationships between determinants of the use of mobile technology and the adoption of mobile technology in the supply chain of SMEs, and (4) To determine the relationship between mobile technology adoption and supply chain performance. The study uses a quantitative approach. Exploratory and correlation research is used to determine the determinants of adoption of mobile technology. The study population are SMEs in Polokwane Local Municipality. A sample of 122 is used and aself administered questionnaire is used to collect primary data. Data analysis is carried out utilising SPSS version 27. A Cronbach alpha test is carried out to measure the internal reliability of the research instrument. The results show that there are positive relationships between determinants of the use of mobile technology and the adoption of mobile technology in the supply chain of SMEs and that there is a positive relationship between mobile technology adoption and supply chain performance. It is recommended to businesses to take into consideration the determinants of mobile technology adoptionin attempting to improve their supply chain performance and to adopt the mobile technology to enhance productivity and the processes of supply chain for those who have not adopted it. A model representing the factors that influence virtual learning system usage in higher education

In higher education institutions, virtual learning systems (VLSs) have been adopted, and are becoming increasingly popular among educators. However, despite this ubiquity of VLS use, there has not been widespread change in pedagogic practice to take advantage of the functionality afforded by VLSs. Knowledge of the actual usage of e-learning systems is limited in terms of what specific feature sets are deemed useful, and how this influences system usage. VLSs have a suite of tools with associated functions/features and properties, as well as non-functional system characteristics. In addition, these systems incorporate pedagogic features to cater for online teaching. Educators in higher education, who are the chief agents of e-learning, are confounded by system-related, pedagogic, organisational, user difference and demographic factors that influence VLS usage. Virtual learning system usage involves system feature usage extent and frequency, total system usage and usage clusters. The aim of this study is to develop a model representing the factors that influence usage of VLSs in higher education. The links between system usage and system-related factors, pedagogic factors, organisational factors, user-difference and demographic factors is researched. This research incorporated a literature study, a pilot study, interviews and surveys. A case study research strategy was combined with a mixed methods research design. The results of the qualitative analysis was triangulated with the findings of the quantitative analysis and compared to the findings of the literature study. The study was conducted at two residential higher education institutions (HEI), namely, University of KwaZulu-Natal and Durban University of Technology. The main contribution of this study is the Virtual Learning System Usage Model (VLSUM) representing the factors that influence VLS usage in residential higher education institutions. The proposed VLSUM is based on the empirical results of this study. VLSUM can be used by managers of educational technology departments and instructional designers to implement interventions to optimize usage. The constructs of VLSUM confirmed existing theories, replicated and synthesised theories from different fields, and extended existing models to produce a new model for understanding the factors that influence VLS usage in higher education. / Computing / D.
