On the orientation of hypergraphs

Ruiz-Vargas, Andres J. 12 1900 (has links)
This is an expository thesis. In this thesis we study out-orientations of hypergraphs, where every hyperarc has one tail vertex. We study hypergraphs that admit out-orientations covering supermodular-type connectivity requirements. For this, we follow a paper of Frank. We also study the Steiner rooted orientation problem. Given a hypergraph and a subset of vertices S ⊆ V, the goal is to give necessary and sufficient conditions for an orientation such that the connectivity between a root vertex and each vertex of S is at least k, for a positive integer k. We follow a paper by Kiraly and Lau, where they prove that every 2k-hyperedge connected hypergraph has such an orientation.

The role of the group context in predicting college students’ goal orientations in a cooperative learning setting : a mixed methods study

Torres, Laura Graciela 10 July 2012 (has links)
Achievement goal theorists have long argued that individuals’ goal orientations are situated and contextual and can thus be manipulated and shaped by their social learning context (Ames, 1992; Brophy, 2004; Linnenbrink & Pintrich, 2002; Pintrich, Conley, & Kempler, 2003). However, despite the proliferation of group-based learning in classrooms today and the assumption that cooperative learning promotes student mastery goal orientation for developing competence, “there has been a neglect of the research on motivational processes in group learning contexts within the field of achievement motivation” (Pintrich et al., 2003, p. 329). This dissertation used a mixed methods approach to investigate cooperative groups as subcontexts (Pintrich et al., 2003) within an undergraduate course that incorporates cooperative learning as an instructional tool. From this sample, I investigated whether and how student- and group-level factors were associated with the type of goal orientations that students adopt within and outside their group context by measuring students’ social academic goal orientations (Kim, Kim, & Svinicki, in press) for their cooperative group work and their achievement goal orientations for their general coursework. A total of 96 students agreed to allow their responses to all online course surveys to be used for research purposes. In addition, 2 of 8 groups in which all group members provided consent were selected to participate in individual interviews. In this embedded mixed methods design (Creswell & Clark, 2007), the quantitative data were the primary focus of analysis and the qualitative data were used to enrich and explain the quantitative findings. Multilevel modeling results indicated that both student- and group-level factors significantly and positively predicted students’ social academic goal orientations in their cooperative group work and students’ subsequent achievement goal orientations in their general course. Furthermore, the qualitative findings indicated that students tend to focus on extrinsic and mastery-oriented goals in addition to individual roles within their cooperative groups. The findings from this dissertation lend promising implications for future researchers and practitioners interested in understanding when and how cooperative group work enhances or hinders students’ achievement motivation. / text

Stress Analysis Using Deformation Lamellae in Quartz

Bethune, Kathryn M. 04 1900 (has links)

Orientations of deformation lamellae in quartz and C-axes of quartz grains containing lamellae were measured at seven locations across a gently folded bed of the Oriskany Sandstone, central Pennsylvania. Lamellae so measured have an average inclination of 20°-30° to the basal plane, and are therefore categorized as "subbasal".

Fabrics of poles to deformation lamellae and corresponding C-axis orientations suggest a paleostress field for the fold which had the arrangement; σ1 bedding parallel, σ3 bedding perpendicular, and σ2 fold axis subparallel. Relative magnitudes of the stresses were given by the condition σ1 > σ3. σ2 is believed to have varied in magnitude between σ1 and σ3 during fold development.

Exact timing of formation of lamellae is uncertain. Textural evidence shows that they predate a later generation of compressional and tensional microfractures associated with the deformation. The best explanation is that they formed in early stages of layer parallel compaction when compressive stresses in all zones of the fold were greatest. Stress refraction may or may not have been operative.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Chabot, Étienne January 1998 (has links)

Leisure Orientation and Outdoor Recreation Participation of Selected Occupational Groups in Utah

Campbell, S. Craig 01 May 1979 (has links)
This study was concerned with the investigation of both the leisure orientation and the outdoor recreation participation of two samples of Utah residents. One sample consisted in part of Professional, Manager and Laborer nonfarm respondents. The other sample consisted of farm respondents, who were both full and part-time farmers. The part-time farmers also held other full-time Professional, Manager and Laborer occupations. The author had three major objectives in this study: (1) to examine the leisure orientation of the respondents from an occupational perspective; (2) to examine the participation in outdoor recreation activities from an occupational perspective; and (3) to examine the enjoyment level of the outdoor recreation activity also from an occupational perspective. Four hypotheses were formed. These were: (1) nonfarm respondents will be more leisure oriented than farm respondents; (2) nonfarm Professionals will have high participation rates in outdoor recreation activities; (3) nonfarm Managers will have high participation rates in outdoor recreation activities; and (4) nonfarm Laborers will have low participation rates in outdoor recreation activities . Leisure orientation was measured by a modified Burdge leisure orientation scale. The citations for validity and reliability of the scale are indicated in the study. The measures of outdoor recreation participation in various activities and the level of enjoyment of the activity are defined operationally. Two of the four hypotheses were supported by the data. The first hypothesis was supported that nonfarm respondents will be more leisure oriented than farm respondents. A mean score of 20.6 was found for the nonfarm respondents and a mean score of 18.6 was found for the farm respondents. The second and third hypotheses were not supported by the data. That is, the nonfarm Professional and Manager were not found to have "high" participation rates in outdoor recreation activities as defined operationally. The fourth hypothesis was found to be supported, with the nonfarm Laborers having "low" outdoor recreation participation rates as defined operationally.

The Relationships between Personality Traits and Career Orientations of the Human Resource Professional Personnel

Huang, Ching-ya 19 June 2006 (has links)
Human resource management is the main part of enterprises competitive ability recently. It is also prized by global famous enterprises. Human resource management function should aggressively participate in the core planning in twenty-first century. Because it is that human resource professional personnel are emphasized, we should pay more attention on personality traits and career orientations which human resource professional personnel have. Therefore, we take human resource office detail analysis for an example at first. The target of this study is to realize the relationship between personality traits and career orientations of human resource professional personnel. We hope that enterprises can be good of using personality traits, and plan career orientations well. This research is grounded on the theoretical basis derived from related literature. Then, questionnaire investigation is adopted with the human resource professional personnel taken as the targets. Use simple sampling investigation approach to get the sample, then taking questionnaire survey. The number of valid questionnaires obtained is 255.The followings are concluded after conducting quantitative analysis in statistic method with the information obtained. 1. Personality traits of human resource professional personnel integrally trend to conscientiousness and agreeableness, followings are extraversion¡Bopenness to experience, and neuroticism. 2. Career orientations of human resource professional personnel integrally trend to occupational and stable, following types are management and promotion. 3. For the group belongs to agreeableness, the career orientations is stable. 4. For the group belongs to conscientiousness, the career orientations is management. 5. For the group belongs to extraversion, the career orientations is promotion. 6. For the group belongs to neuroticism, the career orientations is management. 7. For the group belongs to openness to experience, there is no evidence to say that the career orientations have significant relationship. It is discovered that the personality trait of human resource professional personnel have certain tendency and normality, and career orientations are related with personality traits. Enterprises and organization should emphasize the relationship between personality traits and career orientations of human resource professional personnel. To choose correct human resource workers can help the development of the enterprises and organization, so does set stable profits. When choosing appropriate human resource professional personnel, enterprises and organization can take this study as a reference to help themselves recruit develop, select, employ, educate, etc. Then bring the most profits and growth to enterprises and organization.

Privalomosios pradinės karo tarnybos karių vertybinių nuostatų dinamika / The dynamics of conscripts valuable orientations

Čiūtienė, Romena 29 June 2006 (has links)
The primary goal of the Army is country defense. To reach that goal the Army must prepare soldiers – country defenders. The world is changing its face nowadays – the Army so on: country defenders are transforming into expeditionary warriors. According to such situation most of scholars pays attention to economical or public organizations and its employees values and very little to men of the armed forces, especially conscripts valuable orientations. The thesis focuses on conscripts that are serving in Lithuanian armed forces. Company of the Honor Guard was chosen as a research unit. The aim of the thesis is to analyze the dynamics of conscripts’ valuable orientations during the serving period: identify and explore values that influence soldiers‘maturity, civic attitude, understanding of the professional ethics, explore conscripts‘valuable orientations during the period of serving in the ranks, rate the influence of commanders to dynamics of the conscripts‘valuable orientations. In part one of the study the short review of research literature is presented. In part two special adopted questionnaire was prepared, that was filled by 68 conscripts and 14 commanders (officers and non-commissioned officers). In part three the data of research is represented and analyzed too. After separate findings were systematized, research showed that valuable orientations of conscripts are greatly changing during the period of serving. These orientations become far more similar to...
