A simbologia das casas em Os Maias e Dom Casmurro / The symbology of the dwellings in \"Os Maias\" and \'Dom Casmurro\'

Antonio Eduardo Galhardo Gasques 17 March 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to draw Brazilian and Portuguese literature closer to each other, especially two authors of indisputable value - Machado de Assis and Eça de Queirós - by showing points in which they converge and diverge while creating and using literary symbols. Conceived as a comparative study on the elaboration and personification of the dwellings where much of the action takes place (Ramalhete and Toca in Os Maias and Matacavalos in Dom Casmurro), it points out the aspects in which symbology is antithetic or analogous. Besides the symbology and personification of the dwellings, there is also an extensive analysis of the symbols connected to proper names, colours, numbers and objects - all woven together to form the narrative richness of each novel - and a parallel between similarities and contrasts detected in them.

Sverige som arrangör av ett olympiskt vinterspel? : En analys av de ekonomiska effekterna från ettpotentiellt svenskt arrangemang av de olympiskavinterspelen / Sweden as organizer of an Olympic Winter Games? : An analysis of the economic effects of a potential Swedish event of the WinterOlympics

Mellgren, Emil January 2021 (has links)
This study is focusing on trying to find patterns and tendencies in previous Olympic Winter Games forthe economic variables regional GDP, rate of unemployment and tourism, which are then applied toStockholm County. By doing this, the study is trying to predict changes in these variables in the caseof a future Winter Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden. The method used is based around linearregressions. By applying linear regressions on changes in these variables from previous WinterOlympics, the study tries to find similar patterns both in the period leading up to the event, as well asa period following the event. The results are found to be very individual from event to event whichimplies that there is no general effect from hosting the Winter Olympics that can be expected. However, some trends, regarding specific events that are more likely to resemble a potential WinterOlympics in Sweden, shows us that an increase in regional GDP and a decrease in regional rate ofunemployment might be the effects of a swedish event.

Reengineering von Kernanwendungssystemen auf Großrechnern

Spruth, Wilhelm G., Franz, Joachim 07 January 2019 (has links)
This Paper introduces a new System Architecture of a Transaction Engine which can be used as a middleware component to reengineer core application systems. Starting with the requirement analysis in an existing customer environment and mapping these to key design criteria’s this paper leads to the design of an abstract System Architecture. At the end we show how this Transaction Engine could be used in a real customer environment as a platform for reengineering core application systems. We are using some practical example scenarios based on IBM’s experience in the transaction banking area.

In this paper, we sought to identify and analyze the formation of sales price with the managers and verify the isomorphism evidence in the practices adopted in micro and small businesses in the region of Grande ABC Paulista. Since sales price is a vital decision for businesses regardless of size, area of focus, location or age, as there are several factors that influence this process and some different methods can be used to define it. It is a descriptive and quali-quantitative research, whose data were collected in two stages. In the first stage, in-depth interviews were conducted with nine managers of these businesses. The content analysis to was applied to the interpretation of the findings, seeking subsidies for the sequence of the investigation. It was possible to perceive that there is no pattern in the pricing process among the interviewees. About 50% reported having a logical process, and other 50% more intuitive; all the managers participating in the interviews stated that they were attentive to the market reaction on their price, consider mainly the price of their competitors and its own cost structure, but assign diferente degrees of importance. After conducting the interviews, the 122 questionnaires have applied to managers of micro and small business in Grande ABC Paulista region. It was verified that researched managers are aware of the strategic importance of pricing strategic, and the most most used pricing method among micro and small business in Grande ABC Paulista region is mixed sales price method, and it was possible to verify that there is isomorphism evidence in this process, especially the mimetic mechanism, despite haven???t appear in a strong and explicit way. Effects of DP and CRTH2 activation on osteoblast function

Nedelcescu, Mihai January 2011 (has links)
Modulation of PGs by inhibition or stimulation is a promising approach for the management of pain and inflammation in patients with rheumatic disease. Based on recent results from our laboratories as well as on the literature, we hypothesise that Prostaglandin D[subscript 2] (PGD[subscript 2]) is an important anabolic agent for osteoblasts. Our results show that the PGD[subscript 2] decreases the osteoblasts proliferation acting probably through the CRTH2 receptor. Surprisingly, when DK-PGD[subscript 2] was used alone or with Naproxen, although the proliferation decreased with the dose, it seemed to be restored to the control level at higher concentrations of DK-PGD[subscript 2] . Thus, we hypothesise the existence of other compensatory mechanisms. The PGD[subscript 2] had no relevant effect alone or when used with Naproxen, but seemed to decrease the osteoblast differentiation when used with Diclofenac at a higher concentration only. When vitamin D was added to all conditions, PGD[subscript 2] had an inhibitory effect on the differentiation (dose-response), but this could not be replicated when Naproxen was used. In a test with Diclofenac, we can assume a decreasing trend-line for differentiation when augmenting the PGD[subscript 2] dose, but the effect is not statistically relevant. In a competition test with PGD[subscript 2] and DP/CRTH2 antagonists, blocking DP receptor yielded no effect on differentiation, and blocking the CRTH2 receptor showed a relevant decrease at high concentration of PGD[subscript 2]. The effect was similar in a test with PGD[subscript 2] and PPAR[gamma] antagonist suggesting that it might have a compensatory, positive effect that reversed DP activation. The PGD[subscript 2] has a slight positive effect on the osteoblast matrix mineralisation (with Naproxen), but not through its receptors since use of DP/CRTH2 antagonists did not abrogate this. In a competition test with PGD[subscript 2] and DP/CRTH2 antagonists we had no response. When we used the PGD[subscript 2] in the presence of PPAR[gamma] antagonist, the calcification decreased significantly, indicating that the positive effect of PGD[subscript 2] on calcification works rather through this receptor.

Dynamic Pricing in Heterogeneous Wireless Cellular Networks

Shrader, David 28 August 2014 (has links)
Smart communications devices are giving users instant access to applications that consume large amounts of data. These applications have different requirements on the network for delivery of data. In order to support these different applications, operators are required to support multiple service classes. Given the regulatory and technology constraints and the relatively high cost associated with wireless spectrum licensing and utilization, demand will exceed supply leading to congestion and overload conditions. In addition to new broadband radio technologies offering higher data rates, operators are looking at deploying alternate heterogeneous technologies, such as WLAN, to provide additional bandwidth for serving customers. It is expected that this will still fall short of providing enough network resources to meet the ITU requirement for 1% new call blocking probability. An economic mechanism that offers incentives to individuals for rational behavior is required in order in order to reduce the demand for network resources and resolve the congestion problem. The research in this dissertation demonstrates that the integration of a dynamic pricing with connection admission control mechanism for an operator deploying cooperative heterogeneous networks (e.g., LTE and WLAN) offering multiple QoS service classes reduces the new call blocking probability to the required 1% level. The experimental design consisted, first, of an analytical model of the CAC algorithm with dynamic pricing in a heterogeneous environment. The analytical model was subsequently validated through discrete-event simulation using Matlab.

FUNCTIONAL CHARACTERIZATION OF UPD3 IN DROSOPHILA DEVELOPMENT

Wang, Liqun 01 January 2008 (has links)
The JAK/STAT pathway is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase signaling pathway that is well conserved and highly re-utilized in many mammalian and Drosophila developmental processes. Compared to dozens of ligands and receptors in mammalian JAK/STAT, Drosophila JAK/STAT pathway is simpler with one receptor and three ligands, Upd, Upd2 and Upd3, which have similar amino acid sequences. Previous literature shows that upd and upd2 exhibit the same dynamic striped expression pattern in embryos and have semi-redundant functions during embryogenesis. Do Upd and Upd3 also have redundant functions? To answer this question, the functions of Upd3 in Drosophila development were investigated in this dissertation. In addition, the coordinate expression mechanism of upd and upd3 in eye discs was also analyzed. To study the functions of Upd3 in development, the expression pattern of upd3 was examined and detected in larval eye discs, wing discs, haltere discs, lymph glands and adult ovaries with in situ hybridization to upd3 mRNA and an upd3 reporter line. Consistent with the expression pattern, the loss of function mutants of upd3 exhibit small eyes, outstretched wings, downward extended halteres and reduced circulating blood cell concentration, demonstrating the roles of Upd3 in these tissues’ development. However, functions of Upd3 in other aspects of immune response were not detected. To investigate the mechanism of the coordinate expression of upd and upd3, the genetic and molecular relationship of upd, upd3 and os was dissected. The os alleles, oso, oss and os1, are a group of classical alleles which display outstretched wings, small eyes, or both, respectively. The genetic complementation tests of upd, upd3 and os showed that both upd and upd3 failed to complement os while upd complemented upd3, suggesting functions of both upd and upd3 are affected in os alleles. Consistent with the genetic tests, the expression of upd and upd3 in eye discs is lost in os allele. Molecularly, putative enhancer regions are deleted at the 5’ end of upd3 in os alleles. Hence, a transcriptional co-regulation model of upd and upd3 is proposed in which upd and upd3 share a common cis-regulatory region, lesions of which cause the os phenotype.

Empirical Studies of Mobile Apps and Their Dependence on Mobile Platforms

Syer, MARK 24 January 2013 (has links)
Our increasing reliance on mobile devices has given rise to a new class of software applications (i.e., mobile apps). Tens of thousands of developers have developed hundreds of thousands of mobile apps that are available across multiple platforms. These apps are used by millions of people around the world every day. However, most software engineering research has been performed on large desktop or server applications. We believe that research efforts must begin to examine mobile apps. Mobile apps are rapidly growing, yet they differ from traditionally-studied desktop/server applications. In this thesis, we examine such apps by performing three quantitative studies. First, we study differences in the size of the code bases and development teams of desktop/server applications and mobile apps. We then study differences in the code, dependency and churn properties of mobile apps from two different mobile platforms. Finally, we study the impact of size, coupling, cohesion and code reuse on the quality of mobile apps. Some of the most notable findings are that mobile apps are much smaller than traditionally-studied desktop/server applications and that most mobile apps tend to be developed by only one or two developers. Mobile app developers tend to rely heavily on functionality provided by the underlying mobile platform through platform-specific APIs. We find that Android app developers tend to rely on the Android platform more than BlackBerry app developers rely on the BlackBerry platform. We also find that defects in Android apps tend to be concentrated in a small number of files and that files that depend on the Android platform tend to have more defects. Our results indicate that major differences exist between mobile apps and traditionally-studied desktop/server applications. However, the mobile apps of two different mobile platforms also differ. Further, our results suggest that mobile app developers should avoid excessive platform dependencies and focus their testing efforts on source code files that rely heavily on the underlying mobile platform. Given the widespread use of mobile apps and the lack of research surrounding these apps, we believe that our results will have significant impact on software engineering research. / Thesis (Master, Computing) -- Queen's University, 2013-01-24 10:15:56.086

Bergman, Johannes, Torsson, Markus January 2017 (has links)

Geochemie stopových prvků a izotopů Re-Os pyroxenitů svrchního pláště, Český masiv / Trace element and Re-Os geochemistry of mantle pyroxenites from the Bohemian Massif

Haluzová, Eva January 2014 (has links)
Mantle pyroxenites are important components of mantle rocks, because they provide important insights into bulk composition and heterogeneity of the Earth's upper mantle and therefore, direct evidence of mantle evolution throughout the Earth history. Studied pyroxenites from localities Bečváry (the Kutná Hora Complex), Níhov, Nové Dvory, Mohelno, Horní Kounice, Karlstteten and Meidling (the Gföhl Unit of the Moldanubian Zone) occur as dykes and/or layers within spinel and garnet peridotites from the Bohemian massif. Whole-rock concentrations of rare earth (REE) and other trace elements in studied pyroxenites yield extreme variability, which most likely reflect: 1) variable garnet/clinopyroxene ratios in bulk rocks, 2) different degree of fractionation of parental melts and 3) different concentrations trace elements in the source host material. Pyroxenites from locality Mohelno (LREE-depleted) may be derived from depleted or only slightly enriched suboceanic mantle. In contrast, pyroxenites from Karlstetten, Meidling, Horní Kounice and Nové Dvory (LREE-enriched) crystallized from the melts derived from enriched mantle source with possibly significant contribution of recycled crust. Studied pyroxenites are characterized by extremely variable 187 Os/188 Os ratios. While the pyroxenites from Mohelno and...
