Studium kinematiky rozpadů top-antitopových párů v experimentu Atlas / Studium kinematiky rozpadů top-antitopových párů v experimentu Atlas

Berta, Peter January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, I deal with the measurement of the transverse momentum spectrum of the top quark produced in top-antitop pairs at the LHC at center of mass energy 7 TeV. The analysis is carried out within the ATLAS collaboration. In the single lepton decay channel, I have performed studies on the simulation which were necessary to obtain the final spectrum from real data. I describe basic event selection rules to reduce background events. I study the efficiency of top-antitop pairs reconstruction. I study the unfolding of the measured spectrum which corrects for effects caused by imperfect resolutions. At the end, I show the measured top quark transverse momentum spectrum obtained from my analysis.

Metody identifikace geneticky souvisejících planetek / Identification methods of genetically related asteroids

Fatka, Petr January 2020 (has links)
In this thesis, I describe the main ideas and summarize the results of four refereed papers I contributed to (three times as the second author and once as the first author). The first step of each of these papers was the identification of genetically related asteroid and their membership confirmation. Since members of asteroid pairs and clusters have a very similar heliocentric orbits, we employed and further developed methods based on backward orbital integrations. The chronologically first paper Pravec et al. (2018) deals with asteroid clusters and their similarity to asteroid pairs. The second paper Pravec et al. (2019) is a complex study of 93 asteroid pairs with many interesting results, such as the existence of binary asteroids among asteroid pairs. The third paper Moskovitz et al. (2019) deals with an identification of asteroid pairs in the near-Earth population and a detail study of two probable asteroid pairs. The fourth paper, Fatka et al. (2020), studies the phenomenon of cascade disruption in asteroid clusters, which results in multiple generations (with different ages) of escaped secondaries in some asteroid clusters.

Postcolonial Literature in Swedish EFL Teaching: : A Didactic Consideration of Teaching Postcolonial Literary Concepts with Examples from Arvind Adiga's The White Tiger

Svensson, Martin January 2020 (has links)
This study examines what support that exists in the Swedish upper secondary school curriculum and the English 7 syllabus for teaching postcolonial literature and the postcolonial literary concepts of binary pairs and Othering. This study also illustrates how Arvind Adiga’s The White Tiger (2008) could serve as an example of a postcolonial novel to exemplify said concepts in the EFL classroom. To answer these questions, a definition of the postcolonial genre as well as a definition of the concepts within postcolonial literary theory was formulated. With the theoretical framework in place, an analysis of the steering documents was conducted. The Swedish curriculum’s focus on the teaching of every human’s equal value and rights relate to the postcolonial genre, as the genre is dedicated to telling marginalised perspectives in the modern world. The syllabus states that teaching different genres of literature and the usage of different perspectives in the classroom should be a part of the English subject. This supports the teaching of postcolonial literature as it is a successor to Western classics as well as shift in perspective from the colonisers to the colonised. The teaching of the concepts of binary pairs and Othering were indicated to be potentially challenging to practically implement, as literary didactic literature stated the difficulties of adapting literary theory to an upper secondary school level. Teaching literary concepts was indicated to be achievable provided that teachers teach theory with clear guidance of what context to use it in and where not to use it. As for binary pairs and Othering within Adiga’s The White Tiger (2008), the examples focused on were the Indias of Light and Darkness, and how this binary pair Othered one another. As such, the results were found to indicate that there is support for teaching postcolonial literature as well as postcolonial concepts, and that Adiga’s novel would be an adequate text to use for exemplifying these in the classroom.

Statistical arbitrage : Can a pairs trading strategy beat a buy-and-hold strategy?

Aho, André, Löw, Simon January 2022 (has links)
In this thesis, the aim is to investigate whether a pairs trading strategy on Swedish stocks can generate a higher risk-adjusted return compared to a buy-and-hold strategy on a benchmark index. The benchmark index is the OMX Stockholm Benchmark-index (OMXSBPI), which is an index that should reflect the Swedish market in general. With a statistical focus, a trading algorithm is built which is then evaluated on data between the years 2018 to 2021. The statistical concepts this thesis is based on are stationarity and cointegration and it is the Augmented Dickey-Fuller test that forms the basis for being able to test these concepts. The risk-adjusted return for the strategy is evaluated using the popular measure Sharpe ratio, which is then compared to the Sharpe ratio for the OMXSBPI-index. The results obtained in this study can not confirm that the pairs trading strategy is better than a buy-and-hold strategy on the OMXSBPI-index in terms of risk-adjusted return. One indication, however, is that the strategy seems to perform better in conditions when the market is declining. In 2018, the index went down by 7.7060 while the strategy went up by 7.5100 percent. As it is data for only one year, it is not possible to determine whether it is due to chance or a potential edge of the strategy.

Inheritance Studies and Possible Linkage Relationships in Barley Involving Five Factor Pairs

Byington, Freeman J. 01 May 1940 (has links)
Many studies on inheritance in barley have been made, but very little progress has as yet been obtained. Barley in many ways is an attractive plant with which to make inheritance studies. Unlike common wheat with 21 chromosome pairs and few distinct characters, barley has only 7 chromosome pairs and consequently only 7 possible linkage groups and many distinct characters that may be readily recognized. The chief difficulty is that many of these characters cannot be readily classified because a number of factors may be responsible for their production. The purpose of this project has been to study in considerable detail the Mendelian inheritance of several character pairs as they appear in barley crosses and to study possible linkage relationships between factors. The characters studied are rough versus semi-smooth awn, black versus white color of the flowering glumes and pericarp, long-haired vergus short-haired rachilla, fertility of the lateral florets and hulled versus naked caryopsis.

Tuning the composition of metallic nanoparticles for catalytic applications

Ropp, Anthony January 2021 (has links)
Industries’ interest in nanomaterials is tremendous and catalysis is one of their applications. Catalysts allow reactions to occur under milder conditions, avoiding committing excessive heat or pressure to foster reactions. The discovery of Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLP) in 2006 led to a new concept of homogeneous catalysis: metal-free acids and bases preventing from forming an Lewis adduct because their bulkiness create an active clamp that is able to cleave dihydrogen and other small molecules at room temperature. Transferring the FLP concept to the “nano”-world which is more relevant for industrial applications, requires well-designed nanoparticles and rationalization of their interaction with ligands aiming at forming a FLP between nanoparticles and ligands. The following project conducted at LCMCP (Laboratoire de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Paris) under the supervision of Sophie Carenco aimed at studying the insertion of phosphorus in metallic nanoparticles in order to tune their catalytic activity and demonstrate Frustrated-Lewis Pair catalytic behaviours. To that end, copper nanoparticles and bimetallic core-shell nickel-cobalt nanoparticles were synthesized in colloidal solution. The phosphidation of both nanoparticles was investigated with trioctylphosphine (TOP) as the phosphorous source. Nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. Starting from the failure to reproduce a published procedure of copper phosphide nanoparticles synthesis, conditions of the reaction and the washing procedure were successively improved aiming the obtention of copper phosphide nanoparticles. The one-pot synthesis with hot-injection of TOP at the second step (320°C, 1h), allowed to isolate copper phosphide nanoparticles but a longer reaction time did not result in enhanced phosphorus doping. Further work would need to examine the reproducibility problems faced and investigate harsher reaction conditions (eg. higher temperature). Cu3P nanoparticles would be interesting to test as catalysts for hydrosilylation of benzaldehyde or CO2, a model reaction for CO2 hydrogenation. The synthesis of core-shell nickel-cobalt nanoparticles has been previously rationalized by Sophie Carenco’s team. Phosphidation was attempted from this optimized procedure. We started with harsh conditions (> 250°C, > 1h30) which caused reconstruction of the nanoparticles after leaching of the cobalt shell. In such conditions, the core-shell structure is not retained and a NiCoP alloy is obtained. Milder conditions allowed to retain the structure but further studies are required to characterize and locate the phosphorus insertion in the core-shell nanoparticles. NiCoP alloy and phosphidized core-shell Ni@Co will be of great interest to apply in catalysis for water splitting and hydrogenation of nitriles, respectively.

Growth and Geodesics of Thompson's Group F

Schofield, Jennifer L. 19 November 2009 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper our goal is to describe how to find the growth of Thompson's group F with generators a and b. Also, by studying elements through pipe systems, we describe how adding a third generator c affects geodesic length. We model the growth of Thompson's group F by producing a grammar for reduced pairs of trees based on Blake Fordham's tree structure. Then we change this grammar into a system of equations that describes the growth of Thompson's group F and simplify. To complete our second goal, we present and discuss a computer program that has led to some discoveries about how generators affect the pipe systems. We were able to find the growth function as a system of 11 equations for generators a and b.
