Abstract: Classification in Paralympic sports is a part of competition regulation, playing an important role in minimizing the differences among athletes different disabilities. Classification has two important roles that are, to determine the eligibility to compete and to group athletes for competition. The Classification Code and International Standards of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) details policies and procedures that should be common to all sports. Since 2005, wheelchair handball (WH) has been playing in Brazil, following standardized regulation, mainly aiming competitive events, As WH is a relatively recent sport and still has not its own classification system, this research aims to propose a functional classification system, setting out the criteria and standards to be used in accordance with the Classification Code and International Standards. This study was divided into two chapters: (I) "Classification in Paralympic Sports: a Literature Review" which is a systematic review of classification on Paralympic Sports, and; (II) "Classification for wheelchair handball", a chapter where the regulaments and policies to be adopted for the practice of WH were discussed and subdivided into these different topics: history of the WH classification; principles, purposes and components; class sport; sport class status; competitive eligibility; minimum score for eligibility criteria within court; physical evaluation; assessment of functional movements; court observation; athletes assessment; manual muscle testing ; scoring manual testing (upper limb, lower limb and trunk); characteristics of sports classes; classification procedures, protests, appeals, eligibility to become a classifier and classifier certification. Therefore, the current study tries to establish a guideline that might help the procedures for the WH functional classification system. / Mestrado / Atividade Fisica Adaptada / Mestra em Educação Física

Zařazení paralympijského školního dne do vzdělávacího programu na základní škole / Implementation of the paralympic school day into the primary school education

Bulandr, Marek January 2018 (has links)
Title: The Paralympic School Day as a part of education on elementary schools Objectives: The Paralympic School Day (PSD) is one of the Paralympic educational programs in which children (6 to 12 years) learn about paralympic sports. The aim of PSD is to improve understanding of specific needs of individuals with disabilities and to change attitudes of pupils towards understandig of their divergence. Methods: In June 2017 a shortened version of PŠD was implemented at one elementary school in Prague. 28 pupils of 5th class (16 boys and 12 girls) had an opportunity to listen to a theoretical lecture, than to get acquainted with paralympic sports with students of applied physical activity and to talk to Czech succesful paralympic athlete Tereza Diepoldova. The change of attitudes was assessed by the CAIPE-CZ questionnaire and by the Adjective- Checklist before the program and a week after its implementation. The method of participative observation was used to evaluate of the overall succes of the PSD. Results: Before the PSD, the mean resultwas 26.5 for boys, 26.0 for girls in the same class - both positive attitudes. After the realization of PSD, the result was 27, 25 for boys, 27.0 for girls. Again, both are positive. Both girls and boy have comparatively positive attitudes towards a disabled pupisl....

The impact of public funding on Olympic performance and mass participation in Great Britain

Goranova, D. January 2014 (has links)
There is a rising tendency among countries to prioritise some sports over others and make higher investments of money and resources in their elite development (Green and Oakley, 2001). Such policies and strategies are adopted in the UK, too. Some sports are considered more likely to bring Olympic medals than others and therefore, they are targeted to receive higher funding. Those placed outside the selection are more likely to face challenges in practices to develop their winning potential. Following further research in this occurrence, authors have sought evidences for an inter-relation between funding and performance (Garrett, 2004; Green, 2005; De Bosscher, et.al 2006). In addition, some have explored other influential factors and have stressed on the importance of participation in sport, as the quality and quantity of the talent pool plays a vital role in elite athletes’ development (Sam, 2012; Girginov and Hills, 2008; Shibli, 2012). As a result of an in-depth research, an extensive academic knowledge on Elite Sports policies and sport development has been built, as well as on each of the concepts of funding, performance and participation. There are many studies focused on the case of the UK in particular (Houlihan, 2004; Green, 2006). However, fewer authors have studied these concepts in pairs (mainly funding and performance), and none have examined the relationship and impacts of all three (Grix and Phillpots, 2011; Vayens, et.al 2009; Martindale, et.al 2007). This research will aim to establish if such relationship exists between Olympic sports funding distribution, Olympic performance, and national participation numbers. It will provide a critical review of the British sport system and relevant policies, and it will explore where the written policies do not reflect the relevant actions undertaken. Using mixed methods the impacts of the applied policies will be critically discussed. The gap this study aims to fulfil will contribute to the existing knowledge on elite sport development by providing a better understanding on how funding, performance and participation are related and the impacts some taken-for-granted assumptions have caused.

Disability, identity and media : paralympians in advertising

Leavitt, Stacey January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores representations of Paralympians within media and advertising. Scholarly research on disability is extremely limited, with current research focusing on print media, and few studies going as far as to perform a discourse analysis. Media representations play a prevalent role in constructing “disability” and have the power to define what it means to be a disabled person. Using a poststructural theoretical framework, I undertake a critical discourse analysis of television advertisements produced by Nike and Visa to uncover what narratives regarding disability are circulating with regularity. I find these advertisements featuring Paralympians serve to reproduce the myth of the “supercrip”, failing to acknowledge the complexity of individual experiences of those living with disabilities. Further, the simultaneous celebration and marginalization of Paralympians, a key dialectic found within these advertisements is indicative of a larger polemics circulating with regularity regarding people with disabilities within our increasingly neoliberal society. / v, 117 leaves ; 29 cm

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rui David Marques.pdf: 2073223 bytes, checksum: 11778d1ff50a36170d7570b3edfa6f30 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-14 / This research proposed an investigation to analyse the perception of spectators/consumers about the sponsorships in the Brazilian Olympic and Paralympic sports and verify if there are similarities in the perception of consumers about the sponsorships of the two main sport organizations in Brazil: the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB). The goal was to understand if exits differences in the perception of the spectator/consumer about the motivation of these sponsors when supporting these high performance Brazilian sport organizations. Concepts about sport marketing, sport sponsorship and sport consumer perception were addressed in the research. This was accomplished though a secondary data research, through a survey with direct questions, multiple choice questions and Likert scales sent through internet instruments: email and social media used to deliver the survey to respondents. Factorial analysis was used to test the used constructs and Chi-Test and T-Test to analyse and test the hypothesis. The analisys of the results show that the consumer perception about the sponsors of both organizations is similar, but exists a canibalization between the sponsors of sport organizations.

Quispe Manosalva, Shirley Yohara, Segura Oliva, Rodrigo Alejandro 19 October 2021 (has links)
This research is correlational in scope, that is, its purpose is to know the influence of the independent variable leadership styles on the dependent variable sports development of paraathletes. The non-experimental cross-sectional design means that the research variables will not be manipulated, the information will be collected in a single moment. The para-athletes whose perception of the leadership style of the technical command will be obtained. To meet the objective and measure the research variables, the quantitative method was adapted through the Likert-type survey tool to 199 paraathletes. The reliability analysis of our variables, a 0.905 was obtained, demonstrating that the measurement instrument is statistically reliable and truthful since it exceeds 0.7. Distribution is not normal; therefore, Pearson's r and linear regression have been obtained. There is an association between the variables and the significance approves the alternative hypotheses. The conclusions, in the hypotheses, the relationship is direct because the greater the leadership of the Technical Command there will be greater sports development of the para-athletes and in wheelchair basketball there is no association between the variables and it cannot be generalized either, only in this case it is approved the null hypothesis. / Tesis

Multivalence, liminality, and the theological imagination : contextualising the image of fire for contemporary Christian practice

Dyer, Rebekah Mary January 2018 (has links)
This thesis contends that the image of fire is a multivalent and theologically valuable image for application in British Christian communities. My research offers an original contribution by contextualising the image of fire for Christian practice in Britain, and combining critical observation of several contemporary fire rites with theological analysis. In addition, I conduct original case studies of three Scottish fire rituals: the Stonehaven Fireball Ceremony, the Beltane Fire Festival, and Up-Helly-Aa in Lerwick, Shetland. The potential contribution of fire imagery to Christian practice has been overlooked by modern theological scholarship, social anthropologists, and Christian practitioners. Since the multivalence of the image has not been fully recognised, fire imagery has often been reduced to a binary of ‘positive' and ‘negative' associations. Through my study of non-faith fire rituals and existing Christian fire practices, I explore the interplay between multivalence, multiplicity, and liminality in fire imagery. I demonstrate that deeper theological engagement with the image of fire can enhance participation, transformation, and reflection in transitional ritual experience. I argue that engaging with the multivalence of the image of fire could allow faith communities to move beyond dominant interpretive frameworks and apply the image within their own specific context. First, I orientate the discussion by examining the multivalence of biblical fire imagery and establishing the character of fire within the British social imagination. Second, I use critical observation of community fire practices in non-faith contexts to build a new contextual framework for the analysis of fire imagery. Finally, I apply my findings to a contextual analysis of existing Christian fire practices in Britain. Throughout, I argue that sensory and imaginative interaction with the image of fire provides a way to communicate and interact with theological ideas; experience personal and communal change; and mediate experience of the sacred.
