LONG-TERM EVIDENCE THAT PRECOCIOUS PARR CAN SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE EFFECTIVE SIZE OF A POPULATION OF ATLANTIC SALMON (SALMO SALAR)

I describe temporal changes in the genetic composition of a small anadromous Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population from South Newfoundland, an area where salmon populations are considered as Threatened (COSEWIC 2010). I examined the genetic variability (13 microsatellite loci) in 869 out-migrating smolt and post-spawning kelt samples, collected from 1985 to 2011 for a total of 22 annual collections and a 30 year span of assigned cohorts. I estimated the annual effective number of breeders (Nb) and the generational effective population size (Ne) through genetic methods and demographically using the anadromous sex ratio. Comparisons between genetic and demographic estimates show that the anadromous spawners inadequately explain the observed Ne estimates, suggesting that mature male parr are significantly increasing Nb and Ne over the study period. Spawning as parr appears to be a viable and important strategy in the near absence of anadromous males.

New Quantum Chemistry Methods for Open-Shell Systems and Their Applications in Spin-Polarized Conceptual Density Functional Theory

Motivated by our frustration with the lack of quantum chemistry methods for strongly-correlated open-shell systems, we develop quantitative methods for computing the electronic structure of such systems and qualitative tools for analyzing their chemical properties and reactivity. Specifically, we present a modern framework for performing sparse configuration interaction (CI) computations with arbitrary (Slater determinant) N-electron basis sets, using restricted or generalized spin-orbitals, and including computation of spin-polarized 1- and 2- electron reduced density matrices (RDMs). This framework is then used to implement the flexible ansätze for N-electron CI (FanCI) method more efficiently, via increased vectorization in the FanCI equations and use of sparse CI algorithms. We also extended the FanCI approach, including least-squares and stochastic optimization techniques, the computation of spin-polarized 1- and 2- electron RDMs, and transition energies (ionization potentials, electron affinities, and excitation energies). We use these tools to compare various open-shell CI methods and FanCI methods based on various antisymmetrized product of nonorthogonal geminals ansätze. To translate the vast amount of quantitative data present in the energies and (spin-polarized) density matrices of multiple open-shell states, we present a new, internally consistent and unambiguous framework for spin-polarized conceptual density-functional theory (SP-DFT) that reduces to a sensible formulation of spin-free CDFT in an appropriate limit. Using this framework, we were able to generalize the (non-spin-polarized) Parr function. We can also, using this framework, construct promolecules with proatoms having non-integer charges and multiplicities. Finally, we describe an equations-of-motion-based method for computing spin-polarized reactivity descriptors of a chemical system from only the ground state energy and the 1- and 2- electron RDMs from a single-point electronic structure computation, and show some benchmark computations for this method based on various CI and FanCI electronic structure methods. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Relative Families: Kinship and Childhood in Early Canadian Juvenile Literature, 1843-1913

This thesis examines representations of Indigenous and non-Indigenous children that circulated through various reports, magazines, and fictional stories that were produced for and about children in Canada’s settler colonial context. Particularly, I focus on the archives of two related institutions, the interdenominational Canada Sunday School Union’s annual reports (1843-1876), and the Shingwauk Industrial Home’s monthly juvenile magazine, Our Forest Children (1887-1890), as well as two juvenile adventure narratives, Canadian Crusoes (1852) by Catharine Parr Traill and “The Shagganappi” (1913) by Emily Pauline Johnson (Tekahionwake). Through the nineteenth century, childhood emerged as a stage of development in the making of a racialized adult identity; I find that these archives and texts record uneasiness about racialized systems of feeling and reveal the colonial management regime’s preoccupation with strengthening certain affective bonds of relationality in order to naturalize dominant, Eurocolonial practices of kinship. My argument through this thesis follows and extends critical approaches to discourses of kinship from scholars interested in deploying Indigenous and postcolonial critiques of Western kinship traditions (Gaudry 2013, Justice 2018, Morgensen 2013, Rifkin 2010). These scholars variously draw on Michel Foucault’s theory of biopower, which they find to be central to the production and proliferation of the institution of settler colonialism in North America, and query how the biopolitical management of Indigenous people was constructed through particularized institutions (such as the residential school) and discourses (such as blood quantum). My project builds on this work by focusing on the representation of child-centered affect in Canada’s settler-colonial context. While kinship figures as a dominant narrative through this thesis, I argue that the figure of the child emerged as the node through which the colonial management regime worked out competing forms of kinship in Canada’s settler-colonial context. In the first chapter, I close read the content of the annual reports that were published by the Canada Sunday School Union. I focus specifically on the “technologies of transparency” that reveal the kinds of investments that were made in the lives of real-life settler children in Canada. The Union’s interest in tracking the circulation of Sunday school libraries, for instance, reflects an impulse to inculcate Christian feeling within the nuclear family. The second chapter builds on the colonial management regime’s investment in the emotional lives of children, but shifts the focus to the lives of the Indigenous children who attended the Shingwauk Industrial Home in Sault Ste. Marie through the late 1880s. I demonstrate how Reverend Edward F. Wilson utilized the generic codes of popular British juvenile magazines of the period to showcase how the home’s Indigenous students learn how to articulate appropriate expressions of Christian feeling. In chapter three, I draw attention to Catharine Parr Traill’s undertheorized juvenile adventure novel Canadian Crusoes. I argue that Traill represents vignettes of an Indigenous kinship practice in order to stage the incorporation of a young Kanien’kehá:ka woman into the Euro-Canadian family. Finally, the fourth chapter examines how Emily Pauline Johnson represents the incorporation of mixed-race children into the Canadian nation in her juvenile adventure novel, “The Shagganappi.” While scholars read “The Shagganappi” as a tale of successful racial-intermixture, I argue that such readings only serve to reinscribe the fantasy that Canada is comprised of a “mythical métissage” (Gaudry 85).

The Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Associated with Morphometrics and Parr Marks in an F2 cross of European and North American Strains of Cultured Atlantic Salmon

Mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) for traits under consideration for genetic improvement is becoming more common for many aquatic species, including Atlantic salmon. The objective of the study was to map QTL associated with length, weight, shape, parr mark number and contrast in three F2 hybrid families of European and North American strains of Atlantic salmon using single nucleotide polymorphisms. GridQTL software was used to perform separate analyses for male and female linkage maps. Numerous highly significant QTL were detected for every trait. Locations of QTL differed based on age and map used. Some QTL locations for the analyzed traits were similar to those of other studies on purebred and backcross Atlantic salmon populations; however, many more QTL were detected in the hybrid F2’s. The amount of genetic variation in skin colour and pattern displayed within the transAtlantic F2 families greatly exceeded the ranges seen in nature. / NSERC Strategic Grant

Smoltification status of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in relation to migratory success and migration speed in a regulated river / Smoltifikationsgrad på Atlantlax (Salmo salar) i relation till lyckad migration och migrationshastighet i en reglerad älv

There is a concern that the ecosystems around the world are suffering from fragmentation. Ecosystems such as rivers have lost their connectivity to a large extent due to hydroelectric dams with no or insufficient passways for the natural flow of organisms, matter and energy. The Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, is anadromous, migrating up rivers to spawn as adults and downstream to the sea as juveniles to feed. Before entering the sea, juveniles go through a parr-smolt transformation which alters their behavior, morphology, and physiology. Using radio telemetry, we assessed how the degree of smoltification, in combination with migrational timing and the juvenile’s size, affected their migration. Overall migratory success was found to differ significantly across the range of smoltification, with more fully smoltified juveniles having the highest probability (94%) of reaching the sea. No relationship was found between smoltification status and average migrational speed or delays when passing a dam. Migrational timing was also correlated to migrational success, with earlier juveniles being 50 % more likely to reach the sea than those leaving 2-3 weeks later. All of the tagged juveniles (28) that passed the dam were delayed by an average of 1,32 km/h relative to their median speed in the river, and 18 of the juveniles made it down to the sea. No effect of migrational timing was found with average migrational speed or with dam delays however. Unexpectedly, larger lengths were correlated with slower average migration speeds and greater delays when encountering a dam. This new knowledge about the degree of smoltification and its relation to migration success can help river management to direct their efforts in the right direction to strengthen salmon populations. / Ekosystem som älvar och åar har i stor utsträckning förlorat konnektiviteten till följd av vattenkraftverk med otillräckliga passager för det naturliga flödet av organismer, materia och energi. Atlantlax Salmo salar är en anadrom fisk vars livscykel kräver att den vandrar mellan olika habitat. Den vandrar upp i vattendrag som vuxna för att leka och ut till havet som unga för att äta. De unga laxarna går igenom en utvecklingsprocess (smoltifiering) innan de simmar ut i havet vilket förändrar deras beteende, morfologi och fysiologi. Med hjälp av radiotelemetri bedömde vi hur graden av smoltifiering i kombination med timing och storlek påverkade deras nedströmsvandring. Vi såg en avsevärd skillnad inom dem olika smoltifierings graderna och en lyckad nedströmsvandring, de fullständigt smoltifierade fiskarna var mest sannolika att klara nedströmsvandringen (94%). Inget samband hittades mellan smoltifieringsgrad och genomsnittliga vandringshastigheten genom ån eller förbi ett vattenkraftverk. En lyckad nedströmsvandring var relaterad till tid och vi fann att de som vandrade tidigt hade 50% större chans att nå ut till havet än de som lämnade 2–3 veckor senare. Alla radiomärkta fiskar (28) som passerade vattenkraftverket vart försenade med -1,32 km/h jämfört med deras genomsnittliga hastighet, av 48 märkta fiskar klarade sig 18 ut till havet. Oväntat nog var längre längd relaterat till större förseningar både i medianhastighet och vid passage av en damm. Den här kunskapen om sambandet mellan smoltifieringsgrad och lyckad nedströmsvandring kan förbättra insatser som görs i åar och älvar för att optimera för djur och natur.

Effects of summer peaks on brown trout and Atlantic salmon growth and survival in hydropower-regulated Gullspång River / Påverkan av flödestoppar under sommaren på öring och lax i den korttidsreglerade Gullspångsälven

Daily demands for electrical power are met through sub-daily release of turbined water in the form of hydropeaking. Hydropeaking’s changes to stream flow are listed as a threat to biodiversity in river ecosystems as it causes rapid habitat alteration such as increased depth and velocity, affecting the species living downstream. The brown trout and landlocked salmon populations in Gullspång River, Sweden, are threatened and subjects to the hydropeaking regime. This study investigated the effects of hydropeaking in summertime (summer peaks) in Gullspång River on growth and survival of age 0 (fry) and age 1 (parr) brown trout and Atlantic salmon. The study used an individual-based model (inSTREAM 7.2-SD) to predict how different peak scenarios would affect the different species and age groups. A previous study’s parameters and model calibration for the study area were used, and I manipulated the flow time-series to create new flow time-series including three single peaking scenarios on different dates during summer, one multiple summer peak scenario as well as a no-peak (steady flow) scenario. The analysis focused on qualitative patterns in how the populations responded to the various flow scenarios. Age 0 salmon’s growth and survival were negatively affected by all peaking scenarios in comparison to the steady flow scenario, with the combined peaking scenario having the worst effect. Age 0 trout survival was either unaffected by single peaking (Scenario 1 & 2) or negatively affected (Scenario 3) and was also worst affected by the combined peaks compared to steady flow. Age 1 survival of both species was positively affected by the combined peaking but either unaffected (Scenario 1 & 2) or negatively (Scenario 3) affected by single peaks compared to the steady flow scenario. Age 1 growth followed a similar trend with highest growth rate in the combined peaks scenario and the lowest in the steady flow for both species. Results of the study may contribute to river management decisions regarding choice of peaking period depending on management goals regarding target species and life cycle stage. / Dagliga efterfrågan av elektricitet tillgodoses genom daglig korttidsreglering avvattenkraftverk där vatten flödar genom turbinerna. Överlevnaden hos ålder 1 av båda arter blevpositivt påverkad av det kombinerade flödescenariot men var antingen opåverkad(Scenario 1 & 2) eller negativt påverkad (Scenario 3) av de enstaka flödestopparnajämfört med det stadiga flödet. Tillväxten hos ålder 1 av båda arter följde ett liknandemönster där störst tillväxt uppmättes i det kombinerade scenariot och den lägstatillväxten i det stadiga flödesscenariot. Studiens resultat kan bidra tillförvaltningsbeslut gällande älvar när det kommer till utformningen av flödestoppar,beroende på vilka förvaltningsmål som finns för arter och dess livscykelstadium.
