Premixed and Partial Premixed Turbulent Flames at High Reynolds Number

Methane/air premixed and partially premixed turbulent flames at high Reynolds number are characterized using Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) with detailed chemistry in a spatially evolving slot Bunsen configuration. Two sets of simulations are performed. A first set of simulations with fully premixed inlet conditions is considered in order to assess the effect of turbulence on the flame. Four simulations are performed at increasing Reynolds number and up to 22400, defined based on the bulk velocity, slot width, and the reactants' properties, and 22 billion grid points, making it one of the largest simulations in turbulent combustion. The simulations feature finite rate chemistry with a 16 species mechanism. To perform these simulations, few preliminary steps were required: (i) two skeletal mechanisms were developed reducing GRI-3.0; (ii) a convergence study is performed to select the proper spatial and temporal discretization and (iii) simulations of fully developed turbulent channel flows are preformed to generate the inlet conditions of the jet. The study covers different aspects of flame-turbulence interaction. It is found that the thickness of the reaction zone is similar to that of a laminar flame, while the preheat zone has a lower mean temperature gradient, indicating flame thickening. The characteristic length scales of turbulence are investigated and the effect of the Reynolds number on these quantities is assessed. The tangential rate of strain is responsible for the production of flame surface in the mean and surface destruction is due to the curvature term. A second set of simulations with inhomogeneous inlet conditions is performed to study how partial premixing and turbulence interact with the flame and with each other. The jet Reynolds number is 5600, and a 33 species mechanism is used. The effect of the inlet fluctuations is reflected on heat release rate fluctuations, however the conditional mean is not affected. The flames show thickening of the preheat zone, and for the lowest level of mixing a slight thickening of the reaction zone is observed. The effect of partially mixed mixture on the NOx formation is analyzed and no major impact was found.

Theory and Design of Tunable and Reconfigurable Microwave Passive Components on Partially Magnetized Ferrite Substrate

Typical microwave components such as antennas are large in size and occupy considerable space. Since multiple standards are utilized in modern day systems and thus multiple antennas are required, it is best if a single component can be reconfigured or tuned to various bands. Similarly phase shifters to provide beam scanning and polarization reconfigurable antennas are important for modern day congested wireless systems. Tunability of antennas or phase shifting between antenna elements has been demonstrated using various techniques which include magnetically tunable components on ferrite based substrates. Although this method has shown promising results it also has several issues due to the use of large external electromagnets and operation in the magnetically saturated state. These issues include the device being bulky, inefficient, non-integrable and expensive. In this thesis, we have tried to resolve the above mentioned issues of large size and large power requirement by replacing the large electromagnets with embedded bias windings and also by operating the ferrites in the partially magnetized state. New theoretical models and simulation methodology have been used to evaluate the performance of the microwave passive components in the partially magnetized state. A multilayer ferrite Low Temperature Cofired Ceramic (LTCC) tape system has been used to verify the performance experimentally. There exists a good agreement between the theoretical, simulation and measurement results. Tunable antennas with tuning range of almost 10 % and phase shifter with an FoM of 83.2/dB have been demonstrated in this work, however the major contribution is that this has been achieved with bias fields that are 90 % less than the typically reported values in the literature. Finally, polarization reconfigurability has also been demonstrated for a circular patch antenna using a low cost additive manufacturing technique. The results are promising and indicate that highly integrated ferrite based tunable components are feasible in small form factor, without the need of the large electromagnets and coils, and thus can be operated at very low bias levels as compared to the ones which are operated in the saturated state with external bias mechanisms.

Effective Randomized Concurrency Testing with Partial Order Methods

Modern software systems have been pervasively concurrent to utilize parallel hardware and perform asynchronous tasks. The correctness of concurrent programming, however, has been challenging for real-world and large systems. As the concurrent events of a system can interleave arbitrarily, unexpected interleavings may lead the system to undefined states, resulting in denials of services, performance degradation, inconsistent data, security issues, etc. To detect such concurrency errors, concurrency testing repeatedly explores the interleavings of a system to find the ones that induce errors. Traditional systematic testing, however, suffers from the intractable number of interleavings due to the complexity in real-world systems. Moreover, each iteration in systematic testing adjusts the explored interleaving with a minimal change that swaps the ordering of two events. Such exploration may waste time in large homogeneous sub-spaces leading to the same testing result. Thus on real-world systems, systematic testing often performs poorly to reveal even simple errors within a limited time budget. On the other hand, randomized testing samples interleavings of the system to quickly surface simple errors with substantial chances, but it may as well explore equivalent interleavings that do not affect the testing results. Such redundancies weaken the probabilistic guarantees and performance of randomized testing to find any errors. Towards effective concurrency testing, this thesis leverages partial order semantics with randomized testing to find errors with strong probabilistic guarantees. First, we propose partial order sampling (POS), a new randomized testing framework to sample interleavings of a concurrent program with a novel partial order method. It effectively and simultaneously explores the orderings of all events of the program, and has high probabilities to manifest any errors of unexpected interleavings. We formally proved that our approach has exponentially better probabilistic guarantees to sample any partial orders of the program than state-of-the-art approaches. Our evaluation over 32 known concurrency errors in public benchmarks shows that our framework performed 2.6 times better than state-of-the-art approaches to find the errors. Secondly, we describe Morpheus, a new practical concurrency testing tool to apply POS to high-level distributed systems in Erlang. Morpheus leverages dynamic analysis to identify and predict critical events to reorder during testing, and significantly improves the exploration effectiveness of POS. We performed a case study to apply Morpheus on four popular distributed systems in Erlang, including Mnesia, the database system in standard Erlang distribution, and RabbitMQ, the message broker service. Morpheus found 11 previously unknown errors leading to unexpected crashes, deadlocks, and inconsistent states, demonstrating the effectiveness and practicalness of our approaches.

Bibliography: pages 90-94. / Ordered spaces were introduced by Leopoldo Nachbin [1948 a, b, c, 1950, 1965]. We will be primarily concerned with completely regular ordered spaces, because they are precisely those ordered spaces which admit quasi-uniform structures. A recent and convenient study of these spaces is in the book by P. Fletcher and W.F. Lindgren [1982]. In this thesis we consider functorial quasi-uniformities over (partially) ordered spaces. The functorial methods which we use were developed by Brummer [1971, 1977, 1979, 1982] and Brummer and Hager [1984, 1987] in the context of functorial uniformities over completely regular topological spaces, and of functorial quasi-uniformities over pairwise. completely regular bitopological spaces. We obtain results which are to a large extent analogous to results in those papers. We also introduce some functors which relate our functorial quasi-uniformities to the structures studied by Brummer and others (e.g. Salbany [1984]).

Reconstruction Approach for Partially Truncated CT Data / Tillvägagångssätt för rekonstruktion av delvis trunkerad CT data

For various reasons it might be required to scan an object that partially lies outside the field of view(FOV) of a CT scanner. The parts of the object that lie outside the FOV will not contribute to the line integrals measured by the detector which will cause image artifacts that affect the final image quality. In this paper, I suggest a novel reconstruction approach that estimates the attenuation by the object outside the FOV using a priori knowledge about the outline of the object. It is shown that, knowing the object’s outline, it is possible to determine whether the attenuation along a given line is truncated. The total attenuation for a truncated projection is then estimated by interpolating the data between the consistent projections. The method therefore requires some of the projections to be consistent. This estimate, along with the knowledge of the distance traversed by the X-Ray inside the object is then used to determine the average attenuation. The method was tested on both numerical and physical phantoms. The results are satisfactory even when up to 80% of the projections are truncated. Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) was compared for the complete reconstructed images,and regions of truncations before and after the algorithm was applied. Reconstructed images from completely consistent projections served as ground truth. The results indicate that the algorithm can be used to reconstruct partially truncated CT data, which was tested on numerical and physical phantoms (of semicircular cross section). There is scope for further testing of the algorithm on irregularly shaped objects. / Technology

Flow characteristics in partially vegetated channel with homogeneous and heterogeneous layouts

Yes / This study presents the experimental results of the flow characteristics, such as the flow adjustment, velocity profiles, mixing layer, and the momentum exchange, in the partially vegetated channel with homogeneous and heterogeneous layouts. Three cases are considered, including two homogeneous canopies with uniform sparse and dense vegetation patches respectively, and a heterogeneous canopy consisting of alternating patches of both densities. Results show that heterogeneous canopy requires a longer adjustment distance to reach the quasi-equilibrium region, compared with the homogenous canopy of the same density. In heterogeneous canopy flow, the mixing layer width and the momentum thickness fluctuates with the alternation of vegetation density. The increased values for these two parameters compared to those values for the homogeneous canopies indicate that the greater resistance and momentum loss occur for the heterogeneous layout. A wavy region of the enhanced in-plane turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) is observed in the heterogeneous canopy, suggesting a comparatively more chaotic flow condition, whereas the contours of in-plane TKE are smooth in homogeneous canopies. The presence of the coherent structures in heterogeneous canopy is identified by spectral analysis and the quasi-periodic fluctuations of velocities. The Reynolds stress associated with the coherent structures is found to be the dominator of the contribution to the total Reynolds stress. The comparison between the homogenous canopies of different density is also conducted. Investigation of Partially Coherent Interaction in Fiber Bragg Grating Stabilized 980-Nm Pump Modules

Partially coherent interaction of the feedback light with the field in the laser cavity is affirmed with the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) stabilized 980-nm pump lasers, on the contrast of normally accepted totally incoherent state of operation in the “coherence collapse” regime. Coherence parameter y was defined in this paper to identify the fraction of feedback light working coherently. It is shown that y can be determined by fitting the measured power-difference versus pumping-rate curve to the simulation results. Experiments confirm that coherence parameter y decreases while the distance between the FBG and the laser facet increases, and vice versa. While, if the device is kept operating in the “coherence-collapse” regime, y would not change with the amount of feedback. Laboratory experimental study of ocean waves propagating over a partially buried pipeline in a trench layer

Yes / Seabed instability around a pipeline is one of the primary concerns in offshore pipeline projects. To date, most studies focus on investigating the wave/current-induced response within a porous seabed around either a fully buried pipeline or a thoroughly exposed one. In this study, unlike previous investigations, a series of comprehensive laboratory experiments are carried out in a wave flume to investigate the wave-induced pore pressures around a partially embedded pipeline in a trench layer. Measurements show that the presence of the partially buried pipeline can significantly affect the excess pore pressure in a partially backfilled trench layer, which deviates considerably from that predicted by the theoretical approach. The morphology of the trench layer accompanied with the backfill sediments, especially the deeper trench and thicker backfill (i.e.,b≥1D,e≥0.5D), provides a certain degree of resistance to seabed instability. The amplitude of excess pore pressure around the trench layer roughly exhibits a left-right asymmetric distribution along the periphery of the pipeline, and decays sharply from the upper layer of the trench to the lower region.
