Traços do chão, tramas do mundo. Representações do político na escrita de Mia Couto e Patrick Chamoiseau / Traces of the ground, plots of the world: political representations in the writings of Mia Couto and Patrick ChamoiseauCosta, Luana Antunes 26 September 2014 (has links)
As a gesture of resistance to colonialism and in relation to the asymmetries imposed by hegemonic power centers, facing the political power of the European metropolis peripheral writers played a significant role in the struggle for the liberation of their countries. Throughout this period of anti-colonialist struggle, booming literary systems also resulted in strengthening the relations between their authors whose ideas circulated in the European metropolis as well as in the colonized territories. Concerning the African territories colonized by Portugal, if they conquered their independence in 1975 after more than a decade of armed struggle, the same did not happen to the Antillean islands under French domination- with the exception of Haiti, which conquered its independence in the nineteenth century. Thus, considering this historical difference, we highlight in this work written reflections of the writer Patrick Chamoiseau from Martinique and Mia Couto from Mozambique whose performances as intellectuals in the global arena information stands out in searching answers that could be able to discuss the political and cultural tensions that are characteristic of our contemporary world . Thereby, through comparative analysis and dialectical approach, our aim in this work is to analyze two essays: Lintraitable beauté du monde adresse à Barack Obama (2009), co-authored by Patrick Chamoiseau and Édouard Glissant; and E se Obama fosse africano (2009a), by Mia Couto. At doing so, we also make an effort to foreground strategies to review Eurocentric epistemology and the marginal thoughts in the political global scene. In a second analytical deployment, this work attempts to identify and confront three guiding principles in the novels of the two writers Texaco (1993) by Patrick Chamoiseau and Jesusalém (2009b) by Mia Couto: the representations of memory, of the feminine and the space. We regard those representations as important elements of the field of the forces of political articulations aiming the construction of identity projects in Martinique and Mozambique in relation to the planetary system.

Patrick County, Virginia and the Civil War, 1860-1880Becker, Gertrude Harrington 03 March 2009 (has links)
In 1860, Patrick County. like the rest of Virginia and much of the South. wavered uneasily on the brink of secession. In a county where large planters were few, secession was not overwhelmingly popular. Slaveholding families, however, constituted almost one quarter of the white population in Patrick, as they did across the South, and when Virginia seceded. Patrick Countians flocked to serve in the Confederate Army.
Although situated in Virginia, Patrick managed to escape physical decimation from war. In fact, no battles occurred in the county and Federal troops only invaded the county once in four years. Nevertheless, the Civil War came home to Patrick in a variety of ways: men were killed, livestock and crops impressed, and farms destroyed. With its prosperity of the 1850's disrupted by the war. Patrick's agricultural output dramatically decreased, industry failed, and labor shortages ensued.
Despite the changes the Civil War brought to Patrick, the highest echelon of Patrick's social structure changed little. Those white men who had been well off before the war continued to flourish and continued to own the most and most valuable real estate. Small farmers before the war generally remained small farmers. Free blacks did not gain much status over the decades, and freedmen owned scarcely any land nor personal property; neither group by 1880 had achieved literacy. In Patrick County the rich stayed rich and the planters remained the most influential. / Master of Arts

The space between : contemporary opera and the novel : a study in metaphrasis.Halliwell, Michael John. January 1994 (has links)
The process of metaphrasis denotes the translation of a work of art from one medium into
another. Opera is fundamentally an adaptive art form and contemporary opera has increasingly
turned to the novel as the sophistication and range of the resources of modem music theatre have
expanded. This dissertation will examine the contemporary operatic adaptation of five works of
fiction. The method employed is a comparison of fictional and operatic discourse and an analysis
of the translation of fictional narrative into operatic narrative. Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights
poses particular narrative problems for operatic adaption while Herman Melville's Billy Budd is
characterised by its intrusive narrator and a pervasive ambiguity. Joseph Conrad's novel, Under
Western Eyes, exemplifies many of the narratological complexities of modernism, whereas
Patrick White's Voss, a seminal postcolonial text, offers the operatic adaptor opportunities for the
transcendence of language through music. The final chapter of this study will examine Henry
James's tale, liThe Aspern Papers II , which incorporates many of James's reflections on literature
and the literary life. The postmodernist operatic adaptation transmutes this self-reflexive fictional
work into an opera profoundly concerned with the ontology of opera itself.
This study will test the thesis that opera's affinity lies with the novel rather than with drama: that
the fundamental narrative mode of opera is diegetic rather than mimetic. The main theoretic
thrust proposes that the orchestra in opera performs a similar function to the narrator in fiction.
As fictional characters exist only through the medium of their 'text' therefore, it will be argued,
operatic characters exist only as part of their 'musical' text. Fictional narrative, while frequently
conveying the impression of mimesis is essentially diegetic; operatic characters appear to possess
a similar autonomy to their counterparts in drama, but can be seen as analogous to those in fiction
and as a function of the diegesis of operatic narrative. Operatic characters are 'created' by the
orchestral-narrator and have their being only as part of this narrative act. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of Natal, Durban, 1994.
