A new integrated procedure for energy audits and analyses of buildings / M.F. Geyser

A rapid growth in the national electricity demand is placing an ever-increasing demand on the national electricity supply utility, Eskom. Projections show that the load demand in South Africa may exceed the installed capacity by as early as 2007. This is mainly due to the increase in demand in the residential sector as a result of the electrification of rural and previously disadvantaged communities. However, the industrial and commercial sectors also have a role in this increase. In an attempt to reduce the demand for electricity Eskom has adopted its Demand Side Management (DSM) initiative. This initiative is aimed at lowering the electricity demand in peak times through energy efficiency (EE) or load shift, out of peak demand times. Eskom is implementing the DSM strategy by financing Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) to reduce the demand load of major electricity end-users during peak times. Buildings consume a large percentage of the total energy supply in the world. Most of the energy consumed in buildings is used by the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as lighting. However, a large potential for energy savings exists in buildings. Studies have shown that up to 70% of the electricity consumption of a building can be saved through retrofit studies. However, to capitalise on these opportunities, the ESCOs require tools and procedures that would enable them to accomplish energy savings studies quickly and efficiently. It should be a holistic approach to the typical ESCO building audit. A study of current available software programs showed the lack of holistic tools aimed specifically at retrofit audits, and therefore also the need for such a program. The building simulation program most suited to the retrofit study was chosen and it was used in a retrofit audit. By emulating a retrofit audit with this software, its performance in the field, both positive and negative, could be established. With the experience gained from the retrofit study, as well as input from ESCOs in the industry, a need for such a retrofit tool was established. The simulation program that was tested in the retrofit study is the tool Quickcontrol, as well as the newer version of the program, entitled QEC. The case study showed that even though these packages are well suited to ESCO work, they have certain drawbacks in view of the holistic project approach. The ESCOs require a simple, fast, and integrated procedure for energy audits. This procedure should be embodied in a software program. This study proposes a new integrated procedure for energy audits and the analyses of buildings, in the form of a software tool. This new tool is geared towards the ESCO building audit, in both South A6ica and internationally. It is designed to enable a diplomate engineer to accomplish a building energy and retrofit analysis in two weeks, leading the user through all the main project steps, from data acquisition to writing of the final project report. This is a significant improvement, since it normally takes 50 man-days for an experienced and trained engineering team to complete a full building audit. This tool was used in a case study to test its validity and accuracy. It was found that certain situations would arise in which the criteria that were set for the program would not be adequate. Operational and Technological Peak Load Shifting Strategies for Residential Buildings

abstract: Residential air conditioning systems represent a critical load for many electric utilities, especially for those who serve customers in hot climates. In hot and dry climates, in particular, the cooling load is usually relatively low during night hours and early mornings and hits its maximum in the late afternoon. If electric loads could be shifted from peak hours (e.g., late afternoon) to off-peak hours (e.g., late morning), not only would building operation costs decrease, the need to run peaker plants, which typically use more fossil fuels than non-peaker plants, would also decrease. Thus, shifting electricity consumption from peak to off-peak hours promotes economic and environmental savings. Operational and technological strategies can reduce the load during peak hours by shifting cooling operation from on-peak hours to off-peak hours. Although operational peak load shifting strategies such as precooling may require mechanical cooling (e.g., in climates like Phoenix, Arizona), this cooling is less expensive than on-peak cooling due to demand charges or time-based price plans. Precooling is an operational shift, rather than a technological one, and is thus widely accessible to utilities’ customer base. This dissertation compares the effects of different precooling strategies in a Phoenix-based utility’s residential customer market and assesses the impact of technological enhancements (e.g., energy efficiency measures and solar photovoltaic system) on the performance of precooling. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar configurações de cavidades ressonantes laser, que possibilitem a obtenção de pulsos chaveados Q e futura dobra de freqüência, para aplicações em LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), utilizando como meio ativo cristais de Nd:YLF crescidos pelo método de Czochralski no Centro de Lasers e Aplicações IPEN USP, com bombeio lateral por diodo laser, com uma, duas, quatro e nove reflexões internas totais do feixe laser na superfície do cristal. Das seis cavidades construídas, três cavidades foram desenvolvidas para operarem com baixo ganho, grande armazenamento de energia e com grande aproveitamento de inversão de população, bombeadas com diodo laser em 806 nm e outras três cavidades foram desenvolvidas para operarem com alta absorção de bombeio e alto ganho, bombeadas com diodo laser emitindo em 797 nm. Analysis and design of microprocessor-controlled peak-power-tracking system

Analyses and designs of a peak-power tracking system using microprocessor control are performed. Large-signal stability of the system for various modes of operation is analyzed to predict system dynamics. The stability analysis is supported mainly by qualitative graphical representations of different component blocks of the system. Small-signal stability analysis around the equilibrium points is done to assure proper performance and operation of this particular peak-power tracking system. 長久以來,電力消費與尖峰負載預測之方法不外乎使用迴歸模式及時間序列模式。其選用之自變數往往很多,如國民生產毛額(GNP)、價格、冷氣機台數、冷氣度(Cooling Degree Days)、冷氣時…等,因而使得整個預測模式相當複雜。吾人嘗試簡單以「溫度」單一變數來解釋電力消費與尖峰負載,作迴歸模式與時間序列模式並比較各模式的優劣,尋最適模式適配於『電力消費與溫度』、『尖峰負載與溫度』,並且以台灣地區為例,作實證分析研究,研究結果顯示溫度因素在電力消費上確實佔重要地位。文中溫度因素之單位,選用最具代表性之冷氣度(CDD)來表示,方便吾人探討。

Sweden is only utilizing half of the available excess heat. To utilize more of the excess heat a seasonal thermal energy storage could be implemented to store excessed heat from the summer when the demand is lower to the winter when the demand is higher. This can be achieved by an integration of a seasonal thermal energy storage to the district heating system. A seasonal thermal energy storage may also reduce the need of the system’s peak load, which often is economically costly and adversely affect the environment. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the possibility for Skövde Värmeverk to implement a seasonal thermal storage. The paper is performed by a literature collection and calculations are made by software programs. The result shows that it is technically possible to implement a pit thermal energy storage and a borhole thermal energy storage, but no outcome shows a profitability within 20 years. A pit thermal energy storage can replace the system’s peak load up to 79 percent and a borhole thermal energy storage up to 2,8 percent. The most suitable case for Skövde Värmeverk is to install a pit thermal energy storage with a storage capacity of 4 GWh.

Electricity Projection with Peak Load Shifting Strategy in Wuxi Sino-Swedish Eco-City

Wuxi Sino-Swedish Eco-City, a pilot city region with an area of 2.4 km2, is a demonstration project for innovation in energy technology and integrated smart city solutions in China. After the 1st phase of the project, general outlines of the city’s energy system were drawn and applicable technologies are provided. However, no work has been performed on building electricity load projection and load analysis. This thesis will therefore firstly focus on establishing the building electricity load projection model, using simulation software STELLA. Then the model is scaled up for the whole city region. The simulation results show that there is foreseen to be electricity peak in summer and winter, due to the cooling and heating demand. Based on simulation results, an electricity DSM (demand side management) strategy should be implemented in order to balance the load. Peak load shifting strategy is thus chosen to be investigated. Two technology options (ice-storage system and thermal storage system), which could be implemented to balance the electricity peak, is analyzed by scenarios. This independent degree project has been implemented on behalf of FVB Sverige AB in collaboration Sundsvall Energi AB with the initial purpose of mapping manufacturers of hot water driven absorption chillers. After that, several technical solutions are examined to manage the peak load of a theoretical object which cannot produce the cooling power required with only an absorptions chiller, due to limitations in the district heating supply. The market study has shown that the supply of absorption chillers with drive temperatures of 70–90˚C is limited to a few manufacturers. World Energy offers a unit with drive temperatures of 70 ˚C and efficiency (COP) of 0,4. Due to limitations of district heating flow, a unit with drive temperature of 85 ˚C and efficiency of 0,77 is chosen. The technical solutions are dimensioned for a building with a peak power of 264 kilowatt, where the required peak load ranges from 31 to 39 kilowatt. The technical solutions examined are a solar collector system, tap water heat exchanger, and a conventional compressor driven chiller. The solar collectors are dependent on location but use no refrigerants that are affected by the F-gas regulation. The tap water solution consumes large flows of tap water, but the installation is simple. The conventional chiller is not location dependent but uses ozone degrading refrigerants and has a high cost of operation. From an economic perspective the technical solutions are equally profitable with a present net value of approximately 500 000 SEK and pay-back of 13 years. The examination has also shown that the present value is one million crowns in sales of heat and building after a ten-year period. In conclusion the conventional chiller has the biggest prerequisites to be used as a standardised solution for buildings with a bigger cooling load. Based on the technical and economical conditions.
