The Weakest Failure Detector for Solving Wait-Free, Eventually Bounded-Fair Dining Philosophers

Song, Yantao 14 January 2010 (has links)
This dissertation explores the necessary and sufficient conditions to solve a variant of the dining philosophers problem. This dining variant is defined by three properties: wait-freedom, eventual weak exclusion, and eventual bounded fairness. Wait-freedom guarantees that every correct hungry process eventually enters its critical section, regardless of process crashes. Eventual weak exclusion guarantees that every execution has an infinite suffix during which no two live neighbors execute overlapping critical sections. Eventual bounded fairness guarantees that there exists a fairness bound k such that every execution has an infinite suffix during which no correct hungry process is overtaken more than k times by any neighbor. This dining variant (WF-EBF dining for short) is important for synchronization tasks where eventual safety (i.e., eventual weak exclusion) is sufficient for correctness (e.g., duty-cycle scheduling, self-stabilizing daemons, and contention managers). Unfortunately, it is known that wait-free dining is unsolvable in asynchronous message-passing systems subject to crash faults. To circumvent this impossibility result, it is necessary to assume the existence of bounds on timing properties, such as relative process speeds and message delivery time. As such, it is of interest to characterize the necessary and sufficient timing assumptions to solve WF-EBF dining. We focus on implicit timing assumptions, which can be encapsulated by failure detectors. Failure detectors can be viewed as distributed oracles that can be queried for potentially unreliable information about crash faults. The weakest detector D for WF-EBF dining means that D is both necessary and sufficient. Necessity means that every failure detector that solves WF-EBF dining is at least as strong as D. Sufficiency means that there exists at least one algorithm that solves WF-EBF dining using D. As such, our research goal is to characterize the weakest failure detector to solve WF-EBF dining. We prove that the eventually perfect failure detector 3P is the weakest failure detector for solving WF-EBF dining. 3P eventually suspects crashed processes permanently, but may make mistakes by wrongfully suspecting correct processes finitely many times during any execution. As such, 3P eventually stops suspecting correct processes.

Efficient Wage-Employment Bargaining, Perfect Capital Mobility and the Policy Assignment Principle

Chen, Hsiu-yin 07 February 2004 (has links)
Following Chang, Lai, and Chang(1999), this report discusses the policy assignment problem with efficient wage-employment bargaining under perfect capital mobility. Whether it can rescue the default of proposed by Ramirez (1988) that coordinate between fiscal and exchange rate policies to achieve given desirable targets. The conclusion of this report is as follows¡G Under fixed exchange rates with perfect capital mobility, however, an appropriate mixture between monetary and fiscal policies can dynamically adjust to attain simultaneously the internal goal of desired output and the external goal of official foreign reserves. It's conclusion as the same as proposed by Lai, Chang, and Chu (1990). But more importantly, it can rescue the default of proposed by Ramirez (1988) that coordinate between fiscal and exchange rate policies to achieve given the internal and external goals. Accordingly, we can understand that efficient wage-employment bargaining in the labor market plays a curial role in assessing the assignment or policy instrument to targets. Furthmore, this report extends the analysis results under fixed exchange rates shifting to the system of a managed floating regime. It can find that the policy assignment can still achieve given desirable target. Consequently, this report provides further evidence that the efficient wage-employment bargaining is very important for assignment problem.

Theoretical Simulation and Experimental Approach Applied on Electrodeposition of Cadmium Telluride Thin Films

Yang, Shu-Ying 02 February 2009 (has links)
For the theory of electrochemical analysis, a kinetic model that considers the ion transport limitations near the cathode of electrode is based upon a generalized Butler-Volmer equation and has been modified in theory and developed. The subjects of this study are the investigation of the kinetics mechanism of CdTe electrodeposition from an aqueous solution containing CdSO4, TeO2, and H2SO4 in cyclic voltammetry and applied to the optimal control of the composition and stoichiometric deviation of CdTe thin film by electrodeposition. The computer simulation is performed to understand the influences of electrodeposited parameters in the process, such as deposition temperature, pH value and concentrations of Cd2+ and HTeO2+ ions, is one of the focuses in this study. In this investigation, a novel electrochemical method for simultaneously measuring diffusion coefficient and ion transference number is applied in the simulation of CdTe electrodeposition for the first time. From the fitting of the experimental data, the values of the thermodynamic, kinetic and mass transport parameters of the electrodeposition process are obtained. In addition, the modified Butler-Volmer model predicts the potential of perfect stoichiometry (PPS) for electrodeposition of CdTe thin film, and a good agreement has been found between the calculated and experimental results. It also predicts the composition of electrodeposits for the electrodeposition of CdTe and other II-VI and III-V compounds from solutions containing reducible ions. Furthermore, the one that is worth mentioning in this investigation, a novel algorithm of stoichiometric deviation is also developed and applied to the electrodeposition for the first time. With the change of the parameter, the deviation of stoichiometry can be estimated accurately. The simulated results of mathematical model are verified experimentally using electrodeposition and can obtain two aspects. They are the accurate potential perfect stoichiometry (PPS) in which the intrinsic CdTe thin film can be electrodeposited and the stoichiometric deviation which can be dominated accurately in the adjustment of electrodeposited potential. Besides, the native non-degenerate p-type and n-type CdTe thin film can also be deposited. At PPS, well-connected granular CdTe thin films can be deposited and are predicted to be intrinsic, but are slightly p-type due to cadmium vacancies (VCd). The conversion of conductive type occurs only by defect redistribution and local defect reactions after annealing; the converted n-type layer shows lower resistivity and higher mobility. A film annealed at 350oC exhibits excellent crystallization.

Ją pritaikius nustatyta, jog įmonė yra konkurencinga, jos konkurencinė aplinka yra palanki įmonės veiklai, plėtrai, tačiau ji neturėtų apleisti savo pozicijų rinkoje, o išlikti jos lydere, todėl privalo nuolat stebėti konkurencinę aplinką. Darbe iškelta hipotezė - suformuluotos ir apibendrintos konkurencinės aplinkos vertinimo schemos etapų, kuriuos ekonomikos subjektas gali įtakoti ir įtakoja, eiliškumas nedaro įtakos ekonomikos subjekto konkurencinės aplinkos vertinimo rezultatams - patvirtinta. / The purpose of the Thesis is to generalize a scheme of evaluation and to measure competitive ability of Private Company “Vilniaus duona” after the analysis of methodical – academic works on competitive environment. After applying the scheme, it was identified that the Company is competitive in Lithuanian market, and its competitive environment is beneficial for further activity and development of the Company. However, the Company should not neglect its positions and should remain the leader in the market; therefore it should always observe the competitive environment. The hypothesis of the Thesis - succession of competitive environment evaluation stages, which can be influenced by a company, does not influence the results of evaluation – was proved. The international trade and competition became more intensive in Lithuania after joining European Union. Therefore, if company seeks profitability or even a survival it should be competitive, and it has to give a lot of attention to the competitors and evaluation of competitive environment. The Thesis also defines the concept of competition and competitive environment, as well as evaluation of competitive environment. The result of theoretical analysis is a scheme on competitive environment evaluation. The Thesis includes the analysis on the bread market, hot issues and problems on evaluation of competitive environment in Lithuania after joining the European Union. The Thesis reviews the main participants in the bread market and... [to full text]

A New Model for Cross-polarization Scattering from Perfect Conducting Random Rough Surfaces in Backscattering Direction

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Scattering from random rough surface has been of interest for decades. Several methods were proposed to solve this problem, and Kirchho approximation (KA) and small perturbation method (SMP) are among the most popular. Both methods provide accurate results on rst order scattering, and the range of validity is limited and cross-polarization scattering coecient is zero for these two methods unless these two methods are carried out for higher orders. Furthermore, it is complicated for higher order formulation and multiple scattering and shadowing are neglected in these classic methods. Extension of these two methods has been made in order to x these problems. However, it is usually complicated and problem specic. While small slope approximation is one of the most widely used methods to bridge KA and SMP, it is not easy to implement in a general form. Two scale model can be employed to solve scattering problems for a tilted perturbation plane, the range of validity is limited. A new model is proposed in this thesis to deal with cross-polarization scattering phenomenon on perfect electric conducting random surfaces. Integral equation is adopted in this model. While integral equation method is often combined with numerical method to solve the scattering coecient, the proposed model solves the integral equation iteratively by analytic approximation. We utilize some approximations on the randomness of the surface, and obtain an explicit expression. It is shown that this expression achieves agreement with SMP method in second order. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Electrical Engineering 2017

[en] SEATTERING OF PLANE WAVES BY PERFECT-CONDUCTING TRIDIMENSIONAL BODIES WITH ARBITRARY SHAPES / [pt] ESPALHAMENTO DE ONDAS PLANAS POR OBJETOS CONDUTORES TRIDIMENSIONAIS DE FORMAS ARBITRÁRIAS

ALEXANDRE REGIS NOBREGA 14 August 2006 (has links)
[en] This work studies the interaction between tridimensional perfect conducting objects of arbitrary shapes and incident time-harmonic electromagnetic fields. The fields, scattered by these objects, are determined using a finite number of plane and triangular boundary elements. The induced current density on the boundary is obtained using the Magnetic Field Integral Equation, applied approximately in a numerical approach. With the result mentioned above, the scattered magnetic field (far-field) is determined and the Radar Cross Section is calculated. The advantages and disadvantages of the use of a numerical method (moment method) are pointed out and the results compared. With those in literature.

Kosntrukce APN permutací / Constructions of APN permutations

Krasnayová, Dáša January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis, we examine a family of vectorial boolean functions on F22m inspired by Kim function, in order to find new APN permutations on F22m for m > 2. The functions of this family are defined as F(X) = X3 + bX3q + cX2q+1 + dXq+2 , where parameters b, c and d are from F2m . Necessary and sufficient conditions for this functions to be APN or equivalent to a permutation are presented in this thesis. To find conditions for being APN, Trace-0/Trace-1 decomposition method is used. A method using exponential sums is used to deduce which functions of this family is CCZ-equivalent to a certain type of permutation. These results were then used to search for APN permutations on F26 and F210 . 1

Perfect complexes on algebraic stacks

Hall, Jack, Rydh, David 17 August 2017 (has links)
We develop a theory of unbounded derived categories of quasi-coherent sheaves on algebraic stacks. In particular, we show that these categories are compactly generated by perfect complexes for stacks that either have finite stabilizers or are local quotient stacks. We also extend Toën and Antieau–Gepner’s results on derived Azumaya algebras and compact generation of sheaves on linear categories from derived schemes to derived Deligne–Mumford stacks. These are all consequences of our main theorem: compact generation of a presheaf of triangulated categories on an algebraic stack is local for the quasi-finite flat topology.

Reflections on the Subtitling and Dubbing of Anime: The Translation of Gender in Perfect Blue, a Film by Kon Satoshi

Josephy, Daniel Enrique January 2017 (has links)
Perfect Blue is an anime (Japanese animation) film directed by Kon Satoshi released in 1997. The film revolves around a female idol (a pop star) named Mima who quits her career as an idol to become an actress. She gradually loses her mind, as the pressures from her acting career, her managers, fans and a stalker catch up to her. Perfect Blue touches on the blurring line between fiction and reality, the objectification of women (and idols) as mere products, and the role of women in the idol industry. It is also a stark critique of the hegemonic masculinity and the gender roles that are imposed on women in Japanese society. This thesis presents anime as an important pop culture phenomenon with a massive influence worldwide. The thesis examines the gender stereotypes propagated by this phenomenon and proposes a that Kon’s work is different compared to other anime. This work compares how gender roles are portrayed in the different versions: The Japanese original and the US English subtitles and dubbing. Methodologically, the analysis relies on close observation of the use of the Japanese first and second person pronouns and sentence-final particles in the characters’ language, since “the use of these features is known to be highly gender-dependent” (Hiramoto 2013, 55). This study comes to the conclusion that the subtitles and the dubbing provide a relatively close rendering of gender of the Japanese text, even if the linguistic resources of English do not allow for the translation of gendered Japanese pronouns and sentence-final particles. This means that the subtitles and dubbings maintain the feminist message Kon wanted to give in his film. The study concludes by stressing the importance of taking into account the use of specific pronouns and sentence-final particles when translating Japanese, as these particles are gender-loaded. It also emphasises the importance of being critical of anime’s hegemonic masculinity, and argues that Kon goes against hegemony by portraying a strong and independent female character.
