The role of performance measures in the fast food franchisee industry to sustain positive growth : Cape Metropole - South Africa

Mabesele, Lindiwe Albertina January 2009 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business)) --Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2009 / The Faculty of Business at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology conducts research in the niche area: “The Effective Management of SMMEs” as identified by the National Research Foundation of South Africa. The research contained within the ambit of this thesis, has as its objective to establish the current position of performance measures utilised daily in the business activities by fast food franchisees, to raise awareness of future performance drivers (i.e. the critical success factors or non-financials aspects), and to highlight the importance of measuring the key performance areas of both financials and non-financial indicators as significant contributors to sustainability and growth of an enterprise. The challenge managers is currently faced with pertain to the managing of businesses for results i.e. identifying the drivers of financial success, finding a balance to measure financial and non-financial performances, appraising and compensating people’s performance. Lacking such tools, businesses have encountered difficulties managing what they could not describe or measure, or that are exposed to the risk of failure. Financial accounting (historic information) does not provide details about factors that actually help grow market share and profits (the main drivers of future performance). The questions which should be asked, are: Are the managers of fast food franchisees able to identify critical information or articulate factors that are important to actually help grow market share and profits? What tools are utilized to measure and drive value in real-time? To what level is performance measured, and what is the role and purpose of the utilised measures in the fast food franchisees? Most importantly, to what extent are franchisees in the fast food industry equipped by franchisors through a franchise “package”? This remains problematic as the need to identify and understand information critical for decision making in the fast food industry becomes imperative for the growth and sustainability of the organization. To answer these questions, the performance measures actually used by franchisees, will be surveyed. The proposed study will involve the collection, compilation, and analysis of both financials and non-financials performance measures using survey data from fast food franchisees within the Cape Metropolis. Quantitative data will be collected through opened and closed ended questionnaires (distributed to owners/managers of outlets) to document the existing performance measures and resulting perceived benefits. The outcome of this thesis will help franchisees to identify critical success factors and raise awareness with franchisors on inadequacies in the franchise package, so as to contribute to the effective management of small businesses. Furthermore, the research will be of importance in empowering the fast food sector to take advantages of alternative performance measures, improve their business efficiencies and increase their capacity to grow and be sustainable.

A critical evaluation of the effectiveness of performance appraisal in the Western Cape Provincial Treasury (WCPT)

Jantjies, SO January 2006 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Public Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2006. / The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Act 108 of 1996, instructs the Public Service Commission (PSC) to propose measures to ensure effective and efficient performance in the public service, which includes National and Provincial Departments (1996:108).Various view points on this issue have been expressed why even some hard working staff members of the Western Cape Provincial Treasury (WCPT) are found to be surprised and disappointed over the performance management process especially, when their hard work throughout the year goes unnoticed or are under-rated by their superiors. The bias scoring by certain performance evaluators also causes plenty of animosity, hostility and resentment among colleagues because "friendly" staff is prejudiced ahead of other staff. The Public Service Act 103 of 1994 states that an executive authority has powers and duties regarding the performance management of officers and employees of that office or department (1994:14). "... a head of department shall be responsible for the efficient management and administration of his or her department, including the effective utilisation and training of staff..." .

Synergising the balanced scorecard and the value chain to reduce wastage within the Western Cape education department

Martin, Jeffrey Gustav January 2005 (has links)
Thesis (Doctoral (Human Resource Management))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2005 / The image of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is influenced by its ability to handle and to develop a system whereby not only will the perceived gap between the expectation and satisfaction of the customers be closed, but the customer will also be able to derive value from the services rendered. In order for this to come to fruition, as well as the fact that the employees know the true picture of the flow of work within the WCED, it is crucial that the employees be involved in the mapping of the strategy, which in turn would be utilised to attain the vision. A key challenge is getting all the parts of the WCED in line with its strategies, which in turn impacts on the mission and vision. Maximum value requires an understanding of its creation and a proactive approach. These are not easily accomplished. Not only is the "education industry" presently confronted with many changes, its stakeholders and customers are making greater demands. As a result of this. the WCED needs to be more efficient, but importantly also to be aware of the "efficiency trap". A decrease in the net operating result of the WCED would result in dissatisfied customers. In order for this not to be an option. the synergy of the balanced scorecard and the whole value chain within a lean environment should be considered as the reduction of occupational crime i.e. human activity absorbing resources, but not creating value or nonvalue creating / adding activities or muda has become a priority. Also by focussing on an occupational crime reduction flow of work, the WCED will be seen as a system of processes and not as a system of separate functions.

The impact of high performance work practices on project performance in selected construction companies in Cape Town, South Africa

Chapano, Munodani January 2017 (has links)
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of four High Performance Work Practices (HPWPs) on project performance in selected construction companies in Cape Town, South Africa. The four HPWPs comprised: recruitment and selection (RS); performance appraisal (PA); training and development (TD); and compensation system (CS). The study employed a positivist philosophy utilizing the survey method to collect data from 70 employees who were drawn from a select group of multi-project construction companies in Cape Town, South Africa. The respondents comprised employees who worked as project team members and line staff/ administrative staff. Non-probability sampling procedure in the form of convenience sampling technique was used for the selection of five (5) construction organisations in Cape Town, South Africa. Probability sampling procedure in the form of stratified sampling technique was employed in the selection of the respondents to complete the questionnaire.Collected data was captured and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24. The main research question of the study was: What is the relationship between the four HPWPs and project performance? The results indicate that CS has a weak positive relationship with project performance, whereas TD, PA and RS have weak negative relationships with project performance. It also emerged that there are other factors that significantly affect project performance other than the HPWPs investigated. The results of this study are significant because they provide a unique view of the work environment that has been insufficiently examined. Also, very few studies have focused on the above four universal HPWPs, which this study was earmarked for. The results that are obtained from this study significantly add to the overall body of knowledge pertaining to theories and their application in HRM, project performance and multi-project environments issues.

The great occurring changes transform the industrial environment in a more competitive means. A good strategy is fundamental to the enterprise survival. To define a strategy data are necessary and to quantify them, choosing the right performance measurer is the first step. The theoretical model used in this work was the BSC (Balanced Scorecard) that shows four study perspectives to measure the performance in enterprises: Financial one, Clients, Internal one and Learning and Growth. These four perspectives allow the creation of the strategic map that make the relationship among them. The case study shows the application of this theoretical method in a small enterprise (fewer than 20 employees), having as its main activity the gasket printery and the electric isolation. As the enterprise is small and has an extreme control of operation, it wasn¿t difficult to implant a performance measurer system. The data collected were used for the control criteria of the enterprise, for example: productivity, cost control and labor. The results obtained based in the last-few-year-data (2002 to 2005) were so satisfactory . This work showed that it is possible to use a theoretical model for small enterprises successfully / Mestrado / Materiais e Processos de Fabricação / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica

Development of a model of performance indicators required for the effective management of South African Universities and Technikons

Hutton, Wendy January 1999 (has links)
Research has been conducted on performance indicators in higher education institutions in a number of countries. However, in South Africa limited research in this field on a national level is available to the management of South African higher education institutions. The change in funding of these institutions has led to performance measurement becoming essential in order to justify the use of public funds. In order to obtain more relevant information about performance indicators in the South African context, a literature study was conducted to develop a questionnaire to test the concurrence of the importance of performance indicators in South African universities and technikons. The findings of the survey shows a high level of concurrence for the performance indicators identified in the literature study.
