Color-form preferences and efficiency in problem solving

Rosenblum, Gershen January 1955 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / Although assumptions regarding form and color on the Rorschach test constitute one of the main bulwarks of Rorschach personality theory, they have not been subjected to close experimental scrutiny. Several investigators have attempted in recent years to relate form and color determinants on the Rorschach test to selected measures of personality and behavior. However, the propriety of using the Rorschach test as the instrument to validate one or more of its own determinants is open to question. The purpose of this study was to provide an experimental examination of performance efficiency in a problem-solving situation as a function of the preference for form or color perception. A review of the literature with respect to color-form perception indicated a general agreement that form preference is closely associated with mental activity whereas preference for color is related to emotional and conative modes of behavior. From the nature of these relationships it was hypothesized that a person's perceptual preferences will indicate his mode of approach in a problem-solving situation. [TRUNCATED]

A critical analysis of Cattell's model of personality

Saville, Peter January 1978 (has links)
The personality theory expounded by R.B. Cattell and his collaborators is one of the most influential models of personality in modern-day psychology. The central and most controversial elements of this theory are the sixteen primary source traits, which make up the model. This thesis describes research into the primary source traits as represented by Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Questionaire (16FF). From the responses of a large sample of general population British adults (N: ≈ 2,000) evidence is presented to suggest that: - 1. inconsistencies exist between the relationships of Cattell's personality scales with variables such as age and social class and the relationships postulated from his model. 2. the precision of measurement afforded by certain scales is extremely low, especially in lower social class subjects. 3. the model as represented in the scales of the 16PF is untenable in terms of its internal consistency. 4. Cattell's personality scales are not in fact the most parsimonious description of the personality domain.

'n Metabletiese perspektief op dualistiese konseptualisering en simptomatiese gedrag

Van Niekerk, Abraham Frederik 20 February 2014 (has links)
M.Litt. et Phil. (Clinical Psychology) / People are deeply influenced by what they believe. Their basic epistemology is embodied in everything they create, material or otherwise. Thus, for example, every person's epistemology is reflected in his behaviour. Psychology is more and more aware of this aspect and there are studies and literature investigating the presuppositions of individuals as possible sources of pathology. There are further studies investigating the prejudices of psychological theories in an effort to expose their suppositions. The possibility of these theories contributing to the creation of pathology is investigated. Furthermore there are studies that describe the general intellectual spirit of an epoch. This time-spirit can influence people living in the same era to the extent that they can look, think, feel and act in a similar way. This study tries to identify the present general time-spirit that would contribute the most to the creation of a certain epistemology in the broad life-attitude of the man on street. The spirit of the Reasonable and Scientific Enlightenment is identified as the most prevalent force and influence in the life of western man. The specific presuppositions of this school of thought are described. It is then indicated to what extent these prejudices generate certain pathological effects. Furthermore it is seen how these suppositions facilitate a particular cognitive style, namely exclusive dualistic conceptualisation, and how it can create anxiety. An attempt is made to identify the so-called new and Post-Modernistic time-spirit that is developing in other disciplines and which is opposing the spirit of the Enlightenment. This study suggests that the prejudices of the ecosystemic and interactional models in Psychology can be reconciled with the presuppositions of Post-Modernism. The possibility that the epistemology of Post-Modernism can have a healing effect on the .symptomatic behaviour facilitated by the spirit of the Enlightenment, is put forward.

Identification of Ego States and Early Parent-Child Relationships

Munday, Jim 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose was to verify ego states as objectively identifiable phenomena and the influence of early parent-child relationships on their identification using an audio tape of recorded examples of ego states, Thompson's Ego State Tape (EST), and the Roe-Siegleman Parent-Child Relations Questionaire (PCR). No relationship was found between SAT scores and scores on the EST, nor between PCR and EST scores. It was concluded that possibly (1) no relationship existed between how children perceive their parents and the identification of ego states, and (2) that the PCR might not be sampling child rearing practices relevant to the identification of ego states.
