”We can make great things happen with sexuality education”: Pre-service teachers’ perceptions of sexuality education : A Minor Field Study in the Philippines

Ohlström, Tove January 2016 (has links)
This semi-structured interview study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of Filipino pre-service teachers’ perceptions of sexuality education. It also aimed to study how the pre-service teachers’ perceptions related to international recommendations on sexuality education and the theoretical perspectives of gender and power and Freiran theory that these draw on. Main findings included that the pre-service teachers critically reflected on own experiences of sexuality education and did not intend to repeat the education they received to future students. Furthermore, they expressed problem-focused perceptions of sexuality education content but positive approaches to the subject in general, and were hopeful of positive sexual health outcomes in the Philippines. Objections from the Catholic Church and parents to future students were perceived as the biggest challenges to the implementation of sexuality education. More information to, and collaboration with, parents regarding sexuality education were suggested as means to face resistance in the Philippine society. The pre-service teachers’ perceptions agreed with international recommendations on sexuality education to some extent, but results showed contradicting opinions regarding gender equality and sexual diversity. This point to a conclusion that the pre-service teachers need extended and improved teacher training on sexuality education, that develop their knowledge and allow them to critically reflect on norms in their society.

Loyalty, disobedience, and the myth of the Black Legend in the Philippines during the Seven Years War

Flannery, Kristie Patricia 09 October 2014 (has links)
This paper interrogates the nature of loyalty and disloyalty to Spain in the Philippines during the British occupation of Manila in 1762-1764. It examines the identity and motivations of the thousands of soldiers who joined Simón de Anda’s army that mobilized against the British invaders, as well the Indigenous people who rose up in rebellion in the provinces to the north of Manila during this period, in order to preserve Spanish colonial rule. It also considers the nature of infidelity to Spain in the occupied Philippines. This paper argues that, in a large part due to the cohesiveness of Catholicism among converted Indians, the Spanish empire in the Philippines proved remarkably resilient under the pressure of invasion and occupation. The Black Legend blinded the British to the complexities of the real balance of power in in Manila and the Philippines during the Seven Years War. / text

Computerized water distribution management for the Upper Pampanga River Project, Philippines

Aldovino, Lino Pineda,1945- January 1977 (has links)
This study is concerned with the development of a model for realtime water distribution management for rice crop production in the Upper Pampanga River Project (Philippines). The model utilizes a management technique which considers water distribution at the farm level on a system-wide basis under the constraints of the present users and the physical system situations. The intent of the project is to rely as much as possible on the available uncontrolled streamflows and rainfall during the wet season in order to minimize releases from the Pantabangan reservoir, and thus conserve most of the impounded water for irrigation during the dry season. A computerized model which incorporates a parameter prediction-correction technique is developed for calculating the daily water scheduling for the entire canal network of the UPRP. To determine how much water is needed, a daily water budget at each of the 2,216 rotation areas is performed in conjunction with the daily predicted uncontrolled streamflows, rainfall, varying water requirement, and water status at the farm level. Subsequent delivery correction schedules are determined based on the degree of the prediction error. Studies were conducted for the determination of the appropriate rainfall prediction scheme used in the scheduling model. Selection of the scheme was done through simulation of field operations at the farm level and by the application of the rainfall-use efficiency criterion. Time lags along the Pampanga River and the canal network were analyzed to determine the possibility of supplying the entire network from the Pantabangan Dam within 24 hours. The idealized solution of the problem of inequitable distribution of water within a rotation unit is also presented. The ability of the model to provide situation-and-user-oriented guidelines for water distribution activities is demonstrated.

Filipino nurses’ experiences of nursing in the public health care settings in the Philippines : A qualitative interview study / Filippinska sjuksköterskors upplevelser av att vårda inom det offentliga sjukvårdssystemet i Filippinerna : En kvalitativ intervjustudie

Astvik, Elin, Andersson, Amanda January 2018 (has links)
Background: The Philippines gained independency year 1946. Health services in the country were decentralized year 1991 and was moved from a national level to local government. The public health care system still appears obscure among the growing population and concerns over the public health care settings’ accessibility and quality remain. Religion is significant for the 95 percent Christians who lives in the country and the population obtain a deep faith in God. As the leading exporter of health workforce, nurses that remain in the public health care setting face challenges of workload in a challenging work environment. This study has been made to obtain deeper understanding of Filipino nurses’ experiences of practicing nursing in the public health care settings in the Philippines. Aim: The aim was to describe Filipino nurses’ experiences of practice nursing in the public health care settings in the Philippines. Method: The design is a descriptive qualitative interview study consisting of semi-structured interviews with nine nurses in Palawan, Philippines. The material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. Result: Nurses in this study experience challenges caused by lack of resources and restricted budget. This results in an increased workload and an inadequate nurse to patient ratio which in order create experiences of threatened patient’s safety. Nurses experience feelings of insufficiency in the profession and therefore, have an increased risk of burnout and errors. Discussion: The discussion addresses nurses’ challenges of practice nursing in public health care settings. The nurses are not able to deliver the care they want due to an oppressive workload and time constraint which in order affect the interaction with patients. Several nurses’ experience patient safety being threatened and mention their way of practicing nursing as unsafe which cause feelings of being helpless and insufficient among the nurses in this study. Christianity plays a significant role for the participants in practicing nursing. Nurses coming on and off shifts have daily prayers together which is experienced as energizing for the nurses, as they find strength and wisdom through the beliefs in God.
