A study on the use of dielectric loaded slow wave structures in travelling wave tubesMcDiarmid, Donald Ralph January 1961 (has links)
In the first section of this thesis the simple Pierce Theory for the travelling wave tube is discussed and developed. The result of this analysis is a number of equations which produce information about gain and bandwidth.
The next section of the thesis is devoted to a discussion of periodic structures with particular emphasis on dielectric loaded periodic structures.
Finally the Pierce Theory is applied to the dielectric slow wave structure. Results are presented of a study performed to find a correlation between the physical dimensions of the dielectric structure and the gain-bandwidth properties of a travelling wave tube employing the structure. These results, which are in graphical form, can be used to eliminate the initial exploratory design work for travelling wave tubes of this type. A sample use is made of the design curves and the results are compared to a computational check to show both the usefulness and the limitations of the curves / Applied Science, Faculty of / Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of / Graduate

Voices of leadership : experiences of people of color in a community leadership development programHiyane-Brown, Katherine H. 12 September 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe and record the experiences of
people of color in a community leadership development program. Selected people
of color were asked to describe their experiences as participants in the American
Leadership program in Tacoma-Pierce County in the State of Washington. The
American Leadership Forum (ALF) is a national leadership development program
that is dedicated to joining and strengthening established leaders in order to serve
the public good. ALF has 13 chapters throughout the United States, one of which
is in Tacoma-Pierce County. Ten graduates of the year-long program were
participants in the study, all of whom resided, at the time of the study, in that local
community.
The participants shared stories of their common experiences. These stories
were compared to reveal the similarities and differences among them. While their
personal backgrounds, familiarity with leadership theory, and careers revealed
considerable differences, common themes emerged from the interview data. The
research identified the following themes of their perceptions of the ALF
participation: networking, relationships, community commitment, leadership
development, personal transformation, family, connectedness over time, diversity,
and community impact.
The emergent themes reflect the positive perceptions of the participants'
experiences, as well as their disappointments and concerns. They also represent the
attitudes and opinions that were most deeply impacted by the ALF experience, as
evidenced by their stories.
The findings suggest community leadership development programs have the
ability to:
1) Enhance professional networks and encourage relationship building
2) Empower leaders by developing their leadership capacity
3) Develop the image of a positive, centered self as a significant part of
effective leadership.
The findings also suggest considerations for the planning of leadership
development programs that include:
1) Time for reflection and sharing
2) Relationship building among the participants of color
3) Balancing competing needs for time (i.e., work, involvement in the
community, and meeting family obligations)
4) A mentor component
5) A learning environment that acknowledges and draws upon the diverse
wealth of knowledge and experiences brought by the participants
6) Time for meaningful dialogue on ethnic and racial diversity.
Recommendations for further research on leadership development and
ethnic and racial leadership are included. They include intensive studies in
leadership development, leadership development programs, and promoting and
sustaining diverse communities. / Graduation date: 2004

The World We Want to Leave Behind: White Supremacy in the Apocalyptic Genre's Past, Present, and FutureGentry, Jay Axline 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines the rise of the racialized apocalyptic genre from 1978 to 2019. The period chosen reflects the social shift of the American political right into a party that accepts white supremacy as a tenet. In the post-Civil Rights era, white Americans considered the issue of racism to be solved. With the historic Voting Rights Act and other major victories in the 1960s there was a moment when it seemed America may turn a corner. However, when Richard Nixon took office in 1969, he originated what would be a long process of positioning the American right against intellectualism, minorities, and progress. Nixon, and the development of the new southern strategy would reach decades into the future, utilizing coded language and pitting Americans against one another. Research examining the racialized elements of the American right from Nixon to contemporary times is well chronicled and vast.

An Analysis of and Guide to Tamora Pierce’s Protector of the Small Quartet as Compared to the Established Young Adult Fantasy CanonGilbert, Emrie 06 April 2022 (has links)
Tamora Pierce’s work has been cited by many Young Adult fantasy authors as a major influence in recent years. Despite this, her work remains relatively obscure among librarians and readers of Young Adult literature. This paper examined one of Pierce’s Young Adult fantasy series, Protector of the Small, by comparing the series to existing works of Young Adult fantasy literature commonly accepted as classic or canonical literature. Among the comparative works were titles authored by J. R. R Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, and Philip Pullman. Comparison was character-focused, with emphasis on the representation of parents, other sympathetic adults, peers, and family units. Some comparison was also focused on the representation of antagonists in the selected works. The aim of the comparative analysis was to serve as a guide for librarians, teachers, and readers of Young Adult literature to better understand potential target audiences for the Protector of the Small quartet. It was found that target audiences for the series would likely seek or benefit from the Protector of the Small quartet’s inclusion of supportive parental and mentor figures, strong familial bonds, and supportive and communicative peers. Target audiences would also seek literature with nuanced antagonists capable of character growth. Most prominently, target audiences would seek Young Adult fantasy literature that addresses real-world issues and challenges for young women, including sexism, puberty, and reproductive healthcare.

Caracterização funcional de uma lipase/esterase secretada por Xylella fastidiosa como fator de virulência chave na patogênese da Doença de PierceNascimento, Rafael 21 December 2012 (has links)
Pierce s Disease (PD) of grapevines is caused by the bacterium Xylella
fastidiosa (Xf), a xylem-limited gamma-proteobacterium that is responsible for
several economically important diseases in many plants. A characteristic symptom
of PD is leaf scorching, with regions of chlorosis progressing into necrotic zones at
the peripheral margins of infected leaves. The occlusion of xylem elements and
interference with water transport by Xf and its associated biofilm have been
hypothesized as the main cause of PD symptom development; however, Xf
virulence mechanism has not been elucidated. The analysis of Xf Temecula 1
secretome revealed a putative lipase/esterase (PD1703) that was abundantly
secreted in the bacterial culture supernatant, and was characterized as a protein
ortholog of the cell wall degrading enzyme LipA of Xanthomonas strains. The LipA
was secreted and associated with a biofilm filamentous network and additional
proteomic analysis revealed its abundant presence in outer membrane vesicles
(OMVs). Accumulation of LipA in leaf regions was positively associated with PD
symptoms and inversely correlated with bacterial titer. The lipase/esterase was
found to elicit a hypersensitive response in grapevine and was regulated by
quorum-sensing signaling, which is known to modulate bacterial pathogenesis. We
propose that Xff pathogenesis is caused by LipA secretion mediated by OMV
cargos, and its release and accumulation in leaf margins leads to the observed PD
symptoms development.
totalmente compreendido. A análise do secretoma de Xf Temecula 1 revelou que
uma lipase/esterase (PD1703) é abundantemente secretada in vitro. Esta proteína
foi caracterizada como ortóloga à proteína LipA presente em bactérias do grupo
das Xanthomonas e funcionalmente caracterizada como degradante da parede
celular neste grupo.
