Whitebark pine (Pinus albicaulis) is declining across its range due to disturbances such as mountain pine beetle and white pine blister rust. In this thesis, I assess the response and vulnerability of whitebark pine ecosystems to multiple stressors and disturbances at the northern edge of P.albicaulis range in the Coastal Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Both the compositional change over time of overstory and understory communities as well as vegetation spatial patterns suggest that different sites or ecosystem types housing whitebark pine may differ in their response to disturbance and stress. Surveys conducted ~ 20 years apart indicate that overstory community change differed between site types following the decline of P. albicaulis over time, while the understory did not change significantly. The spatial pattern of overstory species and understory communities also indicates that site type may be important in determining forest change under ongoing disturbance to whitebark pine. / Forest Biology and Management

Drought-induced tree mortality is a phenomenon affecting many forest ecosystems and is predicted to increase under ongoing climate change. Forest stability partly depends on regeneration: the process of renewing mature forest with subsequent generations. As seedlings are more susceptible to drought effects than mature trees, mortality of the seedling bank can represent a major bottleneck controlling forest structure and species composition. Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is the most widely distributed of the Pinus species, covering a broad latitudinal gradient of ecological conditions. The thesis aims to deepen understanding of drought-induced mortality, while analysing intra-specific variation in the phenotypic and metabolic profile of Pinus sylvestris seedlings subjected to drought stress. I also consider the relevance of the results to the broader conceptual framework of drought-induced mortality. The experiments utilise seeds from different populations of origin (provenances) across the north-south axis of the European range of Pinus sylvestris, in order to determine the extent of regeneration capacity in this species under drought. Seeds were collected from different populations (provenances) that, along with other climatic and edaphic differences, span a gradient of water availability: from wet (Scotland) to intermediate (Austria, Poland) to dry (Spain). In Chapter 2, the effects of osmotic stress on the initial seedling establishment stage were studied by comparing phenotypic responses across provenances. Seedling germination, early growth, osmotic stress tolerance and survival were investigated using a polyethylene glycol irrigation treatment as a proxy for rapid and severe drought. Treatment, provenance and interaction effects were found for rate of germination, final proportion of seeds germinated, seedling size, and superoxide dismutase activity (an antioxidant enzyme). Root investment was affected by both provenance and time to germination. Although there was no significant effect of provenance on survival, a trend towards increased probability of survival under osmotic stress was indicated for the southernmost (driest) as compared with the northernmost (wettest) provenance. Chapter 3 investigates the responses of older seedlings (at 10 months) to a drying down of soil moisture for 40 days. Morphological and physiological data were collected to assess intra-specific and intra-population variation in the seedling stress response under drought. A metabolomics analysis using Ultra performance Liquid chromatography followed by mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) was carried out to investigate whether metabolic markers could be identified that are suggestive of heightened oxidative stress and whether populations in different climatic and edaphic environments show variation in metabolic activity under drought. Preliminary results suggest large intra-population variability yet clear differentiation in metabolic responses to drought over the time course of the experiment. Univariate and multivariate analyses indicated that among the most significant increases in response to drought were those involved in osmoprotective and antioxidant capabilities, including the free amino acid proline and a quercetin derivative (a flavonoid). Interestingly, provenances, either under experimental drought or not, did not show significantly different metabolite profiles, even though provenance and its interaction with drought treatment did significantly affect seedling biomass and photochemical efficiency. In Chapter 4 the effects of provenance, maternal parentage and seed weight on germination rate, final germination percentage, as well as seedling drought responses in biomass allocation and the expression of selected antioxidant genes were analysed. Seed weights were measured individually and seed weight was found to have a strong positive effect on: germination rate, seedling dry weights, and number of needles. Expression of two antioxidant enzymes increased under drought. Seed weight was strongly determined by provenance and maternal parentage as well as their interaction. However, root to shoot biomass allocation depended on provenance and maternal effects that were not mediated by seed weight effects. Principal component analysis indicated that the Spanish provenances could be characterised by a higher root to shoot ratio and stem weight. Specific leaf area was also found to be lowest for the Spanish provenances.

Rekindling the flame: reconstructing a fire history for Peters Mountain, Giles County, VirginiaHoss, Jennifer Ann 15 May 2009 (has links)
Beginning in the late 1930s, fire exclusion has drastically altered the vegetation
dynamics of the southern Appalachian Mountains. Extremely low fire frequency has
allowed for more shade-tolerant species to invade once predominantly open forests and
has made it almost impossible for fire-dependent species to establish on a site. One such
species is the endangered Peters Mountain mallow (Iliamna corei Sherff.) located on
Peters Mountain in The Nature Conservancy s Narrows Preserve in Giles County,
Virginia. This paper focuses on the fire history and stand dynamics of Peters Mountain
and how fire exclusion has altered the forest composition. The historic fire frequency
and successional changes discovered here may provide an insight into management
strategies for the mallow.
Seventy-nine fire scarred cross-sections were taken and aged to determine fire
history dates and frequencies. Three 50x20 meter plots were set up on opposing aspects:
northwest and southeast. The aspects were chosen at the direction of The Nature
Conservancy personnel. All trees within were identified, cored and aged to determine
species composition and the establishment dates of all trees. Fire history analysis revealed a mean fire interval of 2.48 years, a Weibull median fire interval of 2.18 years
and a 25 percent scarred class mean fire interval of 12.5 years. Stand dynamic results
show that Quercus montana has established on Peters Mountain prior to fire exclusion
and remains the dominate species on the landscape. An increased number of fire
intolerant species (including Acer rubrum, Sassfras albidum, Nyssa sylvatica) have been
establishing on Peters Mountain during the decades of decreased fire frequency,
suggesting a shift in forest composition. Frequent fires are suggested for mallow
management and oak forest maintenance.

L’accumulation des radionuclides dans les plantes dépende de la pollutions, du sol type dominant, des particularités chimiques et fisiques des radionuclides, de la forme chimique des radionuclides, du type des plants, des particularités climatiques.
Le pin (Pinus sylvestris L.) est très étendu en Lituanie. Très souvent les maladies des champingion et des moisissures attaquent cet type d’arbre. The introduction and establishment of a new and markedly different environment within a long established natural system provides an excellent opportunity to study the principles of adaptation and colonisation by native species. In Australia, an example is furnished by the conversion of large areas of native eucalypt forests to mono-cultured plantations of Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata). The principal aim of this study was to assess which species of native mammals, birds and higher plants are able to utilise or occupy such plantations. Successional aspects of community structure, and colonisation in pine forest systems, were investigated by considering stands of different ages. A variety of adjacent native eucalypt forests provided controls and indicated the range of potential colonisers. Various habitats in both forest types were studied with regard to potential nest sites and availability of food, in order to determine those habitats most favourable for mammals and birds. The effect, on wildlife, of clearing eucalypt forests, but leaving forest remnants along gullies, was also assessed.

Changes in Soil Nitrogen Following Biosolids Application to Loblolly Pine (Pinus Taeda L.) Forest in the Virginia PiedmontArellano Ogaz, Eduardo 08 April 2009 (has links)
Application of biosolids as an alternative source of Nitrogen (N) is becoming a common silviculture practices on loblolly pine forest. However, little is known about how biosolids type, application rate, and timing affect forest floor and soil N availability in pine plantations. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of different types, rates, and season of application of biosolids on forest floor and soil N. The study was established in a 17-year-old loblolly pine plantation in Amelia County, VA. Anaerobically digested (AD225), lime stabilized (LS225), and pelletized (Pellet225) biosolids and a conventional inorganic urea plus diammonium phosphate fertilizer (U+DAP225) were surface applied at a rate of 225 kg ha-1 based on Plant Available Nitrogen (PAN) between March 5th and 10th, 2006. Anaerobically digested biosolids were also surface applied at the rates of 900 kg PAN ha-1 and 1800 kg PAN ha<sup>-</sup¹ (AD900 and AD1800). Anaerobically digested biosolids at the rate of 900 kg PAN ha⁻¹ were also applied on November 5th, 2005 (AD900F).
Surface application of different type of biosolids in a loblolly pine plantation increased soil N availability and mineralization when biosolids were applied at the permitted rate of 225 kg PAN ha⁻¹. Surface soil NH₄-N and NO₃-N availability and N mineralization was significantly different among biosolids type over time. N release from different type of biosolids depends on the initial inorganic N content, and N mineralization in biosolids. The average soil N availability and mineralization was significantly greater in the Pellet225 treatments than in all the other treatments. Soil N availability decreased in winter in all the treatments but remained generally higher than the control until the end of the second growing season. Nitrate-N concentrations in lysimeters were below water quality standard limits in all the treatments applied at the rate of 225 kg PAN ha⁻¹. Accumulation of N, C, and Ca in the forest floor was well correlated with the amount of biosolids applied on each treatment. The surface application of different type of biosolids had minimal impact upon total N and C in the mineral soil. Increasing application rates of anaerobically digested biosolids directly increased soil N availability and mineralization. Nitrate-N concentrations in lysimeters were above water quality standards limits during several months in the AD900 and AD1800 treatments. Significant differences in the forest floor total N, C and Ca were observed with increasing application rates of biosolids. Total C accumulation was significantly higher in the forest floor in the AD1800 treatment. However, we observed no effect on soil total C with increasing application rates of biosolids. We found that biosolids application during spring significantly increased soil extractable N, N mineralization, NO₃-N leaching, and total C in the mineral soil in comparison to the fall application. Fall application significantly increased NH₄-N leaching and soil extractable Ca. We observed no significant effect on ion exchangeable N measured on membranes, total N, C, Ca, and pH measured in the forest floor, and soil total N and pH in the mineral soil. Our results demonstrated that permitted surface application of biosolids at the rate of 225 kg PAN ha⁻¹ in a loblolly pine plantation increased surface soil N availability without increasing the potential for NO₃-N groundwater pollution. / Ph.
