Contamination of Refuges by Transgenic Bt Cotton: Implications for Pink Bollworm (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Resistance

Heuberger, Shannon Marlene January 2006 (has links)
Refuges of non-Bt cotton are used to delay Bt resistance in the pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella, Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), a pest that eats cotton seeds. Contamination of refuges by transgenic Bt cotton could threaten the efficacy of such refuges by increasing the relative survival of larvae that carry alleles for Bt resistance. Here I compared contamination levels in refuges of varying configuration and distance from Bt. I found two types of contamination at low rates in refuges: outcrossing by Bt pollen and adventitious Bt plants. Unexpectedly, outcrossing did not differ between refuge configurations, and did not decrease as distance from Bt fields increased, perhaps because Bt plants in refuges acted as the main Bt pollen source. Bioassays, conducted to evaluate the impacts of contamination on pink bollworm resistance, indicated that Bt plants in refuges may increase the frequency of resistance alleles at a higher rate than outcrossing by Bt plants.

The effects of organic and inorganic mulches on the yield and fruit quality of ‘Cripps’ Pink’ apple trees

Van der Merwe, Johannes Dawid Prins 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScAgric)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Limited research is available on the effect of mulches on established orchards. Most of the information available stems from research conducted in newly planted orchards or on annual crops such as green peppers and strawberries under greenhouse conditions. To increase the current knowledge on the effect of mulches in established orchards, two field trials were conducted on 14 year old „Cripps‟ Pink‟ orchards. The one trial concentrated on the influence of mulches on the root environment and the other trial on the effect of mulches on growth, yield and fruit quality. Both trials were conducted at Lourensford Estate near Somerset West, but the sites differed in soil texture between lighter soil (Tukulu) and heavier soil (Clovelly). Four different mulches were used viz. compost, wood chips, vermi-castings (topped with thin layer of woodchips) and a woven geotextile fabric. These four treatments were compared to an un-mulched control, managed according to industry norms. After reducing irrigation volume in the 2010/2011 season, with a further reduction in the 2011/2012 season, more significant differences were obtained in nutrient levels of fruit and leaves compared to the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 seasons of the trial. Leaf and fruit nutrients showed significant differences in both sites, but the differences were more pronounced on the lighter soil. At the heavier soil site, the vermi-castings, woodchips and compost treatments increased fruit phosphorus (P) during 2010/2011 and the control treatment increased fruit boron (B) during 2011/2012. Only leaf magnesium (Mg) was increased by woodchips and vermi-castings in 2011/2012 at this site. In the lighter soil site, the control treatment had the highest fruit B levels in 2010/2011 while the vermi-castings and the woodchips treatments had the highest fruit P levels in 2011/2012. For the same site, vermi-casting and compost treatments improved leaf potassium (K) uptake in 2010/2011 and 2011/2012, whereas woodchips and geotextile significantly improved leaf copper (Cu) uptake in 2010/2011 compared to the control. To determine if applied nutrients were trapped in the organic mulches over time, leading to a deficiency in the soil and eventually the tree, a mineral analysis was conducted on the organic mulches at the end of each season. Results of the two seasons indicated that vermi-castings contained higher total nutrient levels than the other two organic mulches, but the difference in nutrient levels were shown not to be directly related to the fertilisers applied during each season. In the case of vermi-castings, nutrient quantities in the original material applied at the beginning of each season were higher than those of the other organic mulches. The higher nutrient levels in organic in comparison to inorganic mulches were however not reflected in the fruit and leaf mineral analysis of these treatments. The overall treatment effect in terms of changes in nutrient levels in the tree became less significant when trees were over irrigated. This became evident as the differences between mulching treatments increased as the irrigation was reduced during the season, indicating the masking effect of irrigation on mulching. Evaluating the effect of mulches on growth, yield and fruit quality showed significant differences only at the heavier soil site. The vermi-casting treatment had significantly higher yield efficiencies than the control for the 2010/2011 season. Compost had the lowest yield efficiency at both sites, also during the previous two seasons that formed part of an earlier study (Kotze 2012). In 2011/2012, the compost treatment also showed significantly higher shoot growth than the control. Compost therefore could increase vegetative growth in established orchards on a heavier soil after application for four seasons. Taking the cost of mulching into account, wood chips are the only treatment that can be recommended without compromising fruit quality. Wood chips will sustain or even improve yield efficiency in an established orchard on especially heavier soil. Future research should study the effect of different amounts of irrigation on the various mulches, as the effect of irrigation was not evaluated in this study.

Principles affecting the size of pink and chum salmon populations in British Columbia

Neave, Ferris January 1951 (has links)
Changes in population size are governed by the birthrate, the sex ratio and the death rate. In pink salmon the average egg-production per female is about 1700 and variations from this average are insufficient to account for observed changes in adult populations. The sex ratio is approximately 50-50. Survival during the freshwater phases of the life cycle has been found to vary from approximately 1% to 24%,the average survival being significantly different in different streams. Variation is relatively greater in streams in which average survival is low. Natural survival in the ocean is considered, to average about 5% of the number of young fish reaching the sea. In the central region of the British Columbia coast the annual catch averages about 60% of the adult fish, this percentage being relatively constant for both small and large runs. Pink salmon maturing in "even" and "odd" years represent separate populations. These populations vary in size independently but may maintain a relatively constant ratio for a series of generations. This ratio varies from near equality to extreme disparity. Marked changes in the level of abundance may occur suddenly. Three types of mortality are recognized: (a) mortality which becomes relatively heavier as populations increase in density (compensatory) (b) mortality which becomes relatively heavier as populations decrease in density (depensatory) (c) mortality which is independent of density (extrapensatory). (a) is especially identified with the period of spawning and incubation;(b) is considered to occur mainly during the period of fry migration and to be due to predation;(c) may occur at any stage but is probably most variable during the period between entrance of the adults into fresh water and emergence of the fry. Population changes initiated by extrapensatory factors, among which stream-flow conditions are considered to be important, are exaggerated by depensatdry factors (notably predation on fry) but tend to be resisted by the compensatory influences which operate during the period of spawning and incubation. Stabilization of a level of abundance depends on a balance between these processes. In general, freshwater mortality is more variable than ocean mortality and plays a greater part in inducing population changes. It is suggested that the average freshwater survival of an un-fished population would approximate 2.4% and that this efficiency must be raised to about 6% to permit a sustained catch of 60% of the adult population. A lower freshwater output is likely to result in a reduction in size of the stock. Large runs in both even and odd years are not fundamentally incompatible. The possibility, of promoting a low-level stock to a persisting higher level of abundance is indicated. Chum salmon are subject to the same types of mortality as pink salmon but the results are modified by the higher average egg-production (ca.2700) and the variable length of the life cycle. The species tends to occupy streams in which physical conditions are less stable. Compensatory influences are frequently obscured by these conditions, resulting in irregular fluctuations in abundance. In the application of remedial measures similar principles apply to both species. / Science, Faculty of / Zoology, Department of / Graduate

I Am Not Frightened - Work for Wind Ensemble

Schultz, Brandon 01 May 2023 (has links) (PDF)
I Am Not Frightened is a work for wind ensemble. This piece lasts around ten minutes and is inspired by confrontations with death and how to move past them. Musical inspiration comes from Pink Floyd, Greta Van Fleet, John Mackey, and James Stephenson. The title of the piece refers to the spoken lyrics found in Pink Floyd's “The Great Gig in the Sky” from their 1973 album The Darkside of the Moon. These lyrics come from the band asking Abby Road Studio workers while recording the album, if they are afraid of dying. A janitor named Gerry O’Driscoll provided the lyrics that inspired this piece: “And I am not frightened of dying. Any time will do, I don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying? There's no reason for it – you've got to go some time.” This thought process of accepting that death is as much a part of life as

The onyric and the photograpfy in the narratives of the disc covers, a look at the hipgnosis agency.

Grecco, José Vicente Azzi 10 May 2018 (has links)
Photography occupies a significant place in the universe of graphic design. It is believed that the English agency Hipgnosis, created by Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, has initiated the process known as fotodesign, whose purpose is to insert the photographic image as non-verbal communicator. Hipgnosis\' approach to graphic design began with photographic essays and the use of image manipulation techniques in the photographic laboratory, with black and white, color and infrared films. The agency\'s work was directly with rock and roll bands from the English and North American scene from the 1960s. This procedure enjoyed the influence that the artistic movements Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art presented methods on the creations of the covers of musical disks of the London scene in the 1960s, and consequently alternatives to the graphic design oto the period. This qualitative exploratory and phenomenological research aims to present the course of the pre digital photography process in graphic design as the main focus of the approach through the works realized by the designers Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, head of the agency Hipgnosis.

Traditional and geostatistical modeling of pink bollworm spatial dynamics in Arizona cotton with application to sampling and computer mapping.

Borth, Paul William. January 1987 (has links)
The within-field spatial distribution of F₁, F₂, and F₃ pink bollworm (PBW) (Pectinophora gossypiella Saunders) generations were modeled with Taylor's power law (TPL), Iwao's patchiness regression (IPR), and the geostatistical semivariogram. Kriging interpolation was used to grid data for the generation of isarithmic maps. Distributional patterns and movements within a field are displayed in a time series of three maps depicting density across the field. The sampling protocol was replicated in eight commercial cotton fields in south-central Arizona during 1985 and 1986. Permanent sample stations were situated throughout the fields on a regular grid pattern. Samples were collected during the peak larval population and handled so as to maintain the integrity of site-specific samples (spatially identified by X,Y coordinates). TPL and IPR could not be used satisfactorily to model the F₁ generation. TPL fit the observed F₂ and F₃ data better than IPR. Both methods predicted the F₂ to be more highly aggregated than the F₃. For a given precision, optimum sample size increased when TPL and IPR model parameters were incorporated into sample size formulae relative to a formula which assumed random distribution. Ninety-five percent of the modeled PBW distributions were autocorrelated in 2-dimensional space and shown to conform to regionalized variable theory by the successful application of geostatistics. The semivariogram models are in conceptual agreement with traditional models and represent a worthy alternative to traditional modeling methodology. The semivariogram models have a large nugget effect proportion (average = 67%) which, in combination with low PBW density in commercial fields, limits the applicability of geostatistics in this system. Isarithmic maps showed that F₁ larvae are either localized near a field edge or generally scattered throughout the field. No consistent inter-generational dispersal pattern was identified. The use of systematic grid sampling is most advantageous (relative to random sampling) when density and the spatial dependence of samples is high, or many samples can be taken. Systematic sampling and kriging estimation yielded more precise estimates than random sampling and classical statistics, but the advantage was buffered by low PBW densities and large nugget effect.
