A Study Of Lu-Pitch Name Signification: A Translation with Commentary

The purpose of this thesis is to provide translation of documents on lu from two primary sources for a study of the theory of ,lu, with the main focus on the interpretation and the signification attached to each of the twelve lu-pitch names. To establish the background information of the lu-10 system, an explanation of its acoustical properties is first presented. Based on the most important and widely used tonal system in ancient China -- the san-fen-sun-i system, the illustration is provided for the process of tone generation. Methods proposed by the main theorists who engaged in the discussion of the system of lu are presented. The introduction of the concept of yin and yang in reference to the twelve lu and the signification of the lu-lu system in relation to the human and natural world will also be discussed. The main body of this study is devoted to the translation of written references on the meaning of the twelve lu. The first part is the translation of the selected passages from The Anthology of the Historical Document of Ancient Chinese Music. edited by Tsai-Ping Liang; the second part is the translation of a modern exegesis from an article written by Deh-I Liu. This translation offers a perspective to understand the concept of l-pitch names from the ancient points of view in relation to philosophy, education, religion, and science.

This study's purpose was to investigate the phenomenon of hemispheric specialization for the pitch and rhythmic aspects of melody. Its research problems were to investigate the Influence of pitch, rhythm, and training on hemispheric specialization for pitch-plus-rhythm melodic fragments. A final problem was to examine the relationship between dlchotic ear scores and eye movements evidenced during melodic processing. Twenty musicians and twenty nonmuslcians, right-handed and equally divided as to gender, participated in the project. Accepted dlchotic testing and eye behavior indexing procedures were implemented to investigate each research problem. The dlchotic tape produced for the study contained five subtests In which pitch activity was variously greater than, less than, or equal to rhythmic activity.

Pitch processing and learning ability of the tone language Chinese : A correlational study of music and language

As evidence of intimate music-language relations grow, a certain connection between the use of tone language and the ability of absolute pitch has been found. Genesis of absolute pitch has long been a controversial topic among scientists. While interest of learning the tone language Chinese increases, it is, from a pedagogical perspective, relevant and engaging to specifically study this connection. The purpose of this essay is to study a small group of young beginners in Chinese at close quarters. By implementing a pitch-based hearing test, their pronunciation skills in Chinese were compared with sense of pitch shown in the test. The findings point to complex interactions between several factors, and show for instance a significant importance of musical training and learning motivation. / Samtidigt som vetenskapliga bevis för en intim relation mellan musik och språk växer, har ett visst samband mellan användning av tonspråk och absolut gehör också upptäckts. Uppkomsten av absolut gehör har länge varit ett kontroversiellt forskningsämne. När intresset att lära sig tonspråket kinesiska ökar globalt, är det ur ett pedagogiskt perspektiv motiverat att studera just detta samband. Syftet med föreliggande uppsats är att på nära håll studera en liten grupp elever i nybörjarkinesiska. Genom ett gehörstest, baserat på förmågan att uppfatta tonhöjder, har dessa testresultat jämförts med de tidigare observerade uttalsförmågor hos eleverna. Studien pekar på komplexa interaktioner mellan många faktorer, och visar till exempel musikträning och studiemotivation som avgörande faktorer. / 提要:随着越来越多的研究证明音乐与语言之间的密切关系,也有证据显示声调语言的使用与绝对音高感之间有着一定的互动关系。绝对音高感的成因一直是一个科学上有争议的话题,如今,学习声调语言普通话的兴趣已是国际性,从教学的角度来看,这两者之间的互动关系是个值得研究的话题。 此研究对一小群中文初学者做了近距离的观察,并对她们进行了音高感的听力测试。通过比较测试数据和她们已表现的中文发音能力及敏感性,本文发现了多种因素之间的复杂关系,比如音乐培训以及学习积极性的关键性。

Greenhouse growth of Pinus x rigitaeda seedlings in response to water stress and correlations with 7 year plantation performance

Seedlings of two P. rigida and four P. taeda families and six P. x rigitaeda crosses were grown in a greenhouse under two moisture regimes. Water stress decreased growth in every case in every variable measured. Water stress also elicited some genetic differences in the pitch pine and loblolly pine that were not apparent under the non-stressed treatment. The major differences between pitch and loblolly seedlings seemed to be primarily a function of large differences in seed size. Free growth may also play a major role in differences between the two species. The theory that allometric coefficients are a good indicator of growth under moisture stress was not substantiated by this experiment. In addition, k-values were found to remain relatively constant despite changes in moisture stress. It appears that genetic variance components in P. x rigitaeda may have importance under one set of environmental conditions, and be unimportant in another. Inter-relationship of crosses and confounding of genetic expectations, however, make it difficult to speculate which variance components are most important under moisture stress. Correlations were made between seedling growth characteristics and 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 year height and a 7 year volume index. Many significant correlations were found with 7 year height and volume. These correlations indicate that greenhouse experiments may be useful as an early genetic screening technique in P. x rigitaeda. / M.S.
