Secondary Mathematics Teachers’ Responses to Pivotal Teaching MomentsDupree, Kami M. 01 August 2019 (has links)
This study used a multiple case study design to explore the occurrence of pivotal teaching moments, teachers’ responses to these moments, and teachers’ own perceptions of the impact of these moments on their own knowledge development. The participants were six practicing secondary mathematics teachers. The researcher collected data from teacher created lesson plan outlines, observations of the same lesson delivered to two different classes, participant interviews, and teacher reflection journals. The researcher reviewed the lesson plan outlines prior to observations to understand teachers’ anticipations. During observations, the researcher recorded observed pivotal teaching moments, corresponding teacher responses to these moments, and instructional changes between the two observed lessons. Interviews allowed the researcher to identify in-the-moment teacher thinking and teachers’ motivations for their responses. Teacher reflection journals provided insights related to teachers’ classroom actions and learning.
The results confirmed and built upon existing classifications of pivotal teaching moments and teachers’ responses, while also identifying seven themes related to teacher motivations for their responses. Teachers’ perceptions of changes in their own knowledge base occurred for their content knowledge as well as their pedagogical content knowledge. Future research should explore how pivotal teaching moments are created, how teacher-student interactions shape teacher knowledge development, and examine the role of teachers’ reflections about their practice in their knowledge development

Pivotal Response Treatment to Decrease Challenging Behavior and Increase Functional Communication in Preschool Children With Developmental DelaysGilmour, Kalie Alexandra 22 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
After a review of the literature on Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) in young children with developmental delays, less was known on its effects on challenging behavior and functional communication in preschool age children receiving services in a traditional public school. A multiple baseline design across three participants was used to evaluate the effects of PRT on the functional communication of three preschool students with developmental delays. Based on a functional analysis, we also observed the effects of PRT on challenging behavior. A visual analysis of the data revealed a functional relation between PRT and functional communication and provided promising evidence regarding the effectiveness of function aligned mands in reducing problem behavior. Brief surveys and interviews revealed that the intervention was feasible and effective based on staff and family reports. This research study adds to the evidence supporting the use of the intervention and expands on the knowledge base surrounding function aligned communication. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

The first chapter presents a theoretical model of electoral competition where two parties can increase campaign contributions by choosing policies benefiting a significant interest group. However, such decision will shrink their hardcore vote base where voters are well informed about the policy. The parties can then allocate the funds between campaigning and personal wealth. Different from the core voters, independent voters can be attracted by advertisements funded by campaign spending. Using a multi-stage extensive form game, I investigate how electoral competition interacts with diversions and policy distortions. My result shows that a higher level of electoral competition helps mitigate policy distortions but prompts the parties to divert more funds.
Perfectly informed signal senders need to communicate their true type (productivity or ability) which is often private information to potential receivers. While tests are commonly used as measures of applicants' productivity, the accuracy of them has been questioned. Beginning with the framework of a two-type labor market signaling game, the second chapter investigates how tests of limited reliability affect the nature of equilibria in signaling games with asymmetric information. Our results show that, if a test is inaccurate and costly, only pooling PBE exists given certain conditions. Different forms of test inaccuracy may allow a separating PBE to exist. We also study the case of three types and find different PBEs.
The central issue of siting noxious facilities is that the host community absorbs potential costs, while all others can share the benefits without paying as much. The third chapter presents a modified Clarke mechanism to facilitate the siting decision, taking into account all residents' strategies. Suppose that the social planner is able to reasonably estimate the possible costs, depending on the host location, to each resident created by the facility. Our proposed Clarke mechanism is characterized by strategy-proofness and yields an efficient siting outcome. The issue of budget imbalance is mitigated when the compensation scheme is fully funded with the tax revenue based on the benefits. We then use a simple example to show that a weighted version of the Clarke mechanism may yield a different outcome. / Ph. The purpose of this study was to implement pivotal response training (PRT) strategies paired with constant time delay (CTD) to teach an individual with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID) to self-initiate through question asking. A multiple probe across behaviors design was used to evaluate effectiveness of implementation. Results show that this naturalistic intervention is effective for some questions, while other questions need to be taught in more contrived scenarios.

In this article, we make inferences for the Weibull parameters and propose two test statistics for the comparison of two Weibull
distributions based on interval-censored data. However, the distributions of the two statistics are unknown and not easy to obtain, therefore a simulation study is necessary. An urn model
in the simulation of interval-censored data was proposed by Lee (1999) to select random intervals. Then we propose a simulation
procedure with urn model to obtain approximately the quantiles of the two statistics. We demonstrate an example in AIDS study to
illustrate how the tests can be applied to the infection time distributions of AIDS.

Multimodal Data Analysis of Dyadic Interactions for an Automated Feedback System Supporting Parent Implementation of Pivotal Response TreatmentJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Parents fulfill a pivotal role in early childhood development of social and communication
skills. In children with autism, the development of these skills can be delayed. Applied
behavioral analysis (ABA) techniques have been created to aid in skill acquisition.
Among these, pivotal response treatment (PRT) has been empirically shown to foster
improvements. Research into PRT implementation has also shown that parents can be
trained to be effective interventionists for their children. The current difficulty in PRT
training is how to disseminate training to parents who need it, and how to support and
motivate practitioners after training.
Evaluation of the parents’ fidelity to implementation is often undertaken using video
probes that depict the dyadic interaction occurring between the parent and the child during
PRT sessions. These videos are time consuming for clinicians to process, and often result
in only minimal feedback for the parents. Current trends in technology could be utilized to
alleviate the manual cost of extracting data from the videos, affording greater
opportunities for providing clinician created feedback as well as automated assessments.
The naturalistic context of the video probes along with the dependence on ubiquitous
recording devices creates a difficult scenario for classification tasks. The domain of the
PRT video probes can be expected to have high levels of both aleatory and epistemic
uncertainty. Addressing these challenges requires examination of the multimodal data
along with implementation and evaluation of classification algorithms. This is explored
through the use of a new dataset of PRT videos.
The relationship between the parent and the clinician is important. The clinician can
provide support and help build self-efficacy in addition to providing knowledge and
modeling of treatment procedures. Facilitating this relationship along with automated
feedback not only provides the opportunity to present expert feedback to the parent, but
also allows the clinician to aid in personalizing the classification models. By utilizing a
human-in-the-loop framework, clinicians can aid in addressing the uncertainty in the
classification models by providing additional labeled samples. This will allow the system
to improve classification and provides a person-centered approach to extracting

"TAKING OUR SEAT AT THE TABLE": A NARRATIVE INQUIRY OF THE EXPERIENCES OF SEVEN LATINA ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERS IN HIGHER EDUCATIONPierce, Sharon 01 May 2017 (has links)
Currently, Latinas are the fastest growing population in the United States and comprise one-fifth of the female population (Roach, 2015). It is estimated that by the year 2060 Latinas will make up one-third of the females in the US (Roach, 2015). Gandara (2015) suggests there are several potential barriers that are holding back Latinas from academic and professional success. There are several critical factors that could explain why Latinas are underachieving: family obligations, work obligations, affordability, systemic barriers, lack of information and lack of role models and mentors (Espinoza, 2015, Gandara, 2008; Nunez & Murakami-Ramalho, 2012). This narrative inquiry examined the personal and professional lived experiences of Latina administrative leaders in higher education to gain a deeper understanding of how they navigated their educational and leadership trajectories. The primary conclusion of this study is the need to continue diversifying leadership roles in higher education. The participants in this study support previous findings that suggest that their firsthand experience and their support networks serve as catalysts along their educational and leadership trajectories (Espinoza, 2015; Gándara, 2015; González, 2007). In addition, their stories can provide critical information to not only serve the Latina student population and other under-served students in higher education, but can also help propel and influence women in non-leadership roles to new heights.

This thesis discusses two aspects of spatial statistics: sampling and prediction. In spatial statistics, we observe some phenomena in space. Space is typically of two or three dimensions, but can be of higher dimension. Questions in mind could be; What is the total amount of gold in a gold-mine? How much precipitation could we expect in a specific unobserved location? What is the total tree volume in a forest area? In spatial sampling the aim is to estimate global quantities, such as population totals, based on samples of locations (papers III and IV). In spatial prediction the aim is to estimate local quantities, such as the value at a single unobserved location, with a measure of uncertainty (papers I, II and V). In papers III and IV, we propose sampling designs for selecting representative probability samples in presence of auxiliary variables. If the phenomena under study have clear trends in the auxiliary space, estimation of population quantities can be improved by using representative samples. Such samples also enable estimation of population quantities in subspaces and are especially needed for multi-purpose surveys, when several target variables are of interest. In papers I and II, the objective is to construct valid prediction intervals for the value at a new location, given observed data. Prediction intervals typically rely on the kriging predictor having a Gaussian distribution. In paper I, we show that the distribution of the kriging predictor can be far from Gaussian, even asymptotically. This motivated us to propose a semiparametric method that does not require distributional assumptions. Prediction intervals are constructed from the plug-in ordinary kriging predictor. In paper V, we consider prediction in the presence of left-censoring, where observations falling below a minimum detection limit are not fully recorded. We review existing methods and propose a semi-naive method. The semi-naive method is compared to one model-based method and two naive methods, all based on variants of the kriging predictor.
