Benutting van Gestaltspelterapie met visueel gestremde kindersJohnsen, Elouise 02 1900 (has links)
The researcher found little information in literature reviewed about how Gestalt Play
Therapy is being used in the treatment of visually impaired children. The aim of the
study was to expand knowledge regarding this issue.
A basic qualitative research study of an exploratory and descriptive nature was
undertaken to describe how this therapy may be used in the treatment of such
children. A representative sample was drawn from the population, consisting of
gestalt play therapists who previously provided assistance to these children, using a
purposive non-probability method. Data collection took place through the execution
of semi-structured telephone interviews. Collected data was analysed using the
Thematic Content Analysis to search for related themes (in line with the objectives of
the study) in transcribed interviews. The general conclusion drawn from the empirical
data was that gestalt play therapy can be used to good effect in the treatment of
visually impaired children. / Die navorser het gevind dat daar weinig inligting in die literatuur beskikbaar is oor
hoe gestaltspelterapie in die hulpverlening aan visueel gestremde kinders benut kan
word. Die doel van die navorsingstudie was dus om kennis uit te brei rakende die
benutting van gestaltspelterapie in die hulpverlening aan visueel gestremde kinders.
'n Basiese kwalitatiewe navorsingstudie met 'n verkennende en beskrywende aard is
onderneem om te beskryf hoe gestaltspelterapie benut word met betrekking tot
visueel gestremde kinders. 'n Verteenwoordigende steekproef is getrek, volgens 'n
doelgerigte nie-waarskynlikheidsmetode, vanuit die populasie bestaande uit
gestaltspelterapeute wat al van tevore hulp aan visueel gestremde kinders verleen
het. Data-insameling het plaasgevind deur middel van semi-gestruktureerde
telefoniese onderhoude. Die versamelde data is volgens die Tematiese
Inhoudsanalise ontleed deur verbandhoudende temas (ooreenkomstig die doel van
die studie) in getranskribeerde onderhoude te soek. Die algemene gevolgtrekking
wat vanuit die empiriese bevindinge gemaak kan word, is dat gestaltspelterapie wel

The goal of the study is to develop a structured play therapy intervention model to mitigate the effect of childhood sexual abuse. South Africa has one of the highest prevalence rates for child sexual abuse, and professionals working with children are consequently faced with the phenomenon on an increasing scale. Many professionals find themselves ill-equipped to address the effect of sexual abuse on the child, and the lack of an integrated understanding of the phenomenon seems to exacerbate this need. In order to effectively address the effect of sexual abuse on the child, professionals need a holistic understanding of this phenomenon and its effects, as well as a clear outline of the necessary interventions.
The thesis consists of five sections, which can be outlined as follows:
Section A consists of the problem statement, the research questions, the research objective, the general theoretical assumption and the theoretical approach. It includes the research methodology, the limitations of the research, definitions of the key terms and the selection and structure of the dissertation. The research focused on the following specific objectives stemming from the problem statement:
-To conduct a thorough literature study on various aspects pertaining to childhood sexual abuse in order to form a holistic, well-researched perspective on the phenomenon of childhood sexual abuse and the available evidence-based interventions in the sexual abuse of children;
-To develop a structured play therapy intervention model to mitigate the effect of childhood sexual abuse; -To subject the prototype of the proposed intervention model to peer review in order to determine its strengths and weaknesses and make the necessary adaptations to the model prior to its final dissemination.
Section B consists of four articles, in which the goals of the research, the outcomes of the literature study and the empirical study are reported. Each article is dealt with as a self-contained unit focusing on a specific aspect of the research and contributing to the collection of data necessary for the design and evaluation of the proposed intervention model.
Article 1
Knowledge of the legislation pertaining to sexual abuse is imperative for health care professionals working with a child who has been sexually abused. This article provides a critical analysis of those aspects of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 32 of 2007, relevant to the health care professional. The shortcomings of the Act and the practical implications of these for healthcare professionals is pointed out. Focus also falls on the relevant sections of the Childcare Act, 38 of 2005 and how these sections complement the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act, 32 of 2007).
Article 2
In order to effectively help traumatised children to achieve positive outcomes, professionals must have a clearly-defined methodology, underpinned by theory and based on an integrated approach. The first step towards this is clearly to redefine the phenomenon of child sexual abuse. As sexual abuse is both a legal and a psychosocial phenomenon, the authors are of the opinion that a more integrative definition is necessary in the South African context. The information in this article therefore aims to provide health care professionals with an integrative definition that takes into account both the South African legal definition of sexual abuse and the underlying psychosocial factors associated with it.Article 3
Sexual abuse is a phenomenon with far-reaching effects. This article provides a holistic look at the effects of sexual abuse from an ecological systems perspective. The effect of sexual abuse on the child as the focus of the microsystems is emphasized, as well as the effects on the parents or the child’s caregiver as the mesosystem. The article further considers the interactive dynamics between the different systems and explains how each system can contribute to either mitigating or exacerbating the effects of abuse on the child.
Article 4
The research goal of this article is to develop and evaluate a structured play therapy intervention model to mitigate the effects of child sexual abuse. The intervention model was developed from the results of the previous articles as well as an in-depth literature study on existing therapeutic interventions. To fulfil the aim of this article, the following objectives are set:
-To give an outline of the research methodology underlying the study;
-To discuss the problem analysis and project plan;
-To outline the intervention model for mitigating the effects of child sexual abuse;
-To discuss the research findings on the proposed model.
Section C gives a summary of the most important findings and conclusions regarding the research in general. It also contains recommendations and points to the contribution made to the specific field of study.
Section D consists of the addenda to the research report, for example, the different instruments of measurement and the questionnaires.

As the desire to be entertained through humour is near universal the establishment and return of a positive sense of humour may be considered a goal of therapy. In Gestalt Theory a contact boundary disturbance such as deflection refers to the ways in which individuals may refuse contact with their environment in order to avoid aware¬ness.
The goal of this study was to explore the implementation of humour as a deflective technique where contact boundary disturbances occur, to bring about change. Det finns evidens för lek inom barnpsykoterapi! : En systematisk litteraturstudieFallmark, Gunneli January 2015 (has links)
Barns mentala ohälsa ökar kraftigt. Barnpsykoterapi med inslag av fri lek, här kallad lekterapi, har under många år varit den traditionella behandlingen av barn i behov av psykoterapi. För att ha en möjlighet att kunna jämföras vetenskapligt med andra dokumenterade behandlingsmetoder behöver evidensen för lekterapi som behandlingsmetod undersökas, stärkas liksom spridas. Syftet med föreliggande uppsats är att undersöka kunskapsläget inom lekterapi som behandlingsmetod inom barnpsykoterapi. Totalt 41 studier har granskats systematiskt enligt evidensbaserad medicinsk metod. Tjugoen av dem poängbedömdes medan övriga 20 delades upp i temagrupper för att visa ett ytterligare djup och bredd av de analyserade studierna. Tretton studier av de 21 poängbedömda fick minst 80% av totalpoängen, gradering I, och sju stycken graderingen II, d. v. s. 70-80% av max poängen. Enligt internationell praxis av gradering av evidensstyrka för slutsatser, visar två studier, eller fler, med ett högt bevisvärde eller god systematisk översikt på ett starkt vetenskapligt underlag som ger god evidens. Som ett bifynd visade sig 16 av de 41 studierna även ha en direkt anknytning till affektiv neurovetenskaplig forskning. Rekommendationen är att använda barnpsykoterapi med fri lek för barn som ska behandlas vid mental ohälsa.

Child Teacher Relationship Training As a Head Start Early Mental Health Intervention for Children Exhibiting Disruptive Behavior: an Exploratory StudyGonzales, Terri Lynn 08 1900 (has links)
This exploratory study examined the effectiveness of child teacher relationship training (CTRT) with at-risk preschool children exhibiting disruptive behavior. The participants included a total of 23 Head Start teachers and their aides, and children identified by their teachers as exhibiting clinical or borderline levels of externalizing behavior problems. Teacher participants included 22 females and 1 male; demographics were reported as 56% Hispanic ethnicity, 17% Black American, and 22% European American. Child participants included 15 males and 5 females; demographics were reported as 60% Hispanic, 30% Black American, and 10% European American. A 2 by 3 (Group x Repeated Measures) split plot ANOVA was used to analyze the data. According to teacher reports using the Teacher Report Form (C-TRF) and blinded raters’ reports using the Direct Observation Form (DOF) to assess disruptive behaviors, children whose teachers received the CTRT intervention demonstrated statistically significant decreases (p < .05) in externalizing behaviors on the C-TRF and total problems on the DOF from pre- to mid- to post-test, compared to children whose teachers participated in the active control group. The CTRT intervention demonstrated large treatment effects on both measures (C-TRF: ?p2 =.173; DOF: ?p2=.164) when compared to CD, revealing the practical significance of the findings on reducing disruptive behaviors. According to independent raters on the DOF, 90% of children receiving the CTRT intervention moved from clinical levels of behavioral concern to more normative levels of functioning following treatment, establishing the clinical significance of CTRT as an early mental health intervention for preschool children in Head start exhibiting disruptive behavior.

Child Teacher Relationship Training (Ctrt) with Children Exhibiting Disruptive Behavior: Effects on Teachers’ Ability to Provide Emotional and Relational Support to Students and on Student-teacher Relationship StressPronchenko-Jain, Yulia 08 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the impact of child teacher relationship training (CTRT) on teachers’ ability to provide emotional support in the classroom, teachers’ use of relationship-building skills, and teachers’ level of stress related to the student-child relationship. Teachers and aides from one Head Start school were randomly assigned to the experimental group CTRT (n = 11) or an active control Conscious Discipline group (CD; n = 12). Overall, 21 females, 11 (CTRT) and 11 (CD), and one male (CD) participated in the study. Participating teachers and aides identified themselves as the following: 13 Hispanic/Latino, 5 Black American, and 5 European American. Teachers and aides identified children with clinical levels of disruptive behavior problems for the purpose of selecting children of focus for the study. The children’s mean age was 3.63 for CTRT group and 3.36 for CD group. Overall, 9 females, 2 (CTRT) and 7 (CD), and 10 males, 6 (CTRT) and 4 (CD) participated in the study. Teachers reported children’s ethnicity: 13 Hispanic/Latino, 5 African American, and 1 other. A two-factor (Treatment x Group) repeated measures split plot ANOVA was utilized to analyze the data with an alpha level of .05. According to objective raters blinded to the study using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) and the Child Teacher Relationship Skills Checklist (CTRT-SC) and teacher reports using Index of Teaching Stress (ITS), results revealed a statistically significant interaction effect for the experimental teachers’ use of child-teacher relationship skills (CTRT-SC: p = .036), a non-statistically significant interaction effect for the experimental teachers’ ability to provide emotional support (CLASS: p = .50), and a non-statistically significant interaction effect on teacher stress (ITS: p = .997). Partial eta squared effect sizes were calculated to determine the practical significance of the findings. Compared to the active control, CTRT demonstrated large treatment effects over time on the CTRT-SC (?p2 = .19) and the CLASS (?p2 = .16). Study findings provide support for CTRT as an effective intervention for increasing Head Start teachers’ ability to provide emotional and relational support to at-risk students.

Elementary School Children's Perceptions of the Process of Counseling with School Counselors who Utilize Play Therapy TechniquesGreen, Eric 20 May 2005 (has links)
This exploratory research was designed to elucidate elementary school children's perceptions of the process of counseling with school counselors who utilize play therapy techniques. Seven elementary school children who were engaged in a counseling relationship with a school counselor who utilized play therapy techniques were interviewed three different times in person. All three rounds of interviews were audio taped and transcribed for the purpose of data analysis. Throughout each round of data collection, coding procedures, mainly open, axial, and selective, were utilized to extract and organize emergent themes. The data yielded three main categories: (a) therapeutic relationship, (b) emotional expressiveness, and (c) creative play, which included properties and sub-properties. To verify findings, expert consultation, member checks, and rival explanations were sought. Findings are discussed, followed by a conceptual framework of the counseling process. Methods to address potential limitations are presented, followed by a discussion of implications for counselor educators, play therapists, and school counselors. Last, suggestions for further research are offered.

This study investigated the preparation, practices, and perceptions of Licensed Professional Counselors with respect to counseling children. The purpose was to determine: a) their graduate coursework, continuing education, and post-degree supervision with respect to counseling children; b) their current caseload, preferred counseling method, and professional development with respect to counseling children; and c) their perceptions regarding their formal education, application of skills, efficacy, and credentialing. The participants in this study were 300 Licensed Professional Counselors. The target population consisted of all Licensed Professional Counselors within the United States. A research-developed, on-line survey, the Counselor Training and Practice Inventory, was used to assess the preparation, practices, and perceptions of the participants in this study. In order for educational standards and training requirements to be established for counselors who counsel children, data must be collected regarding the current views and trends of practitioners, both those who counsel children and those who do not. The study may contribute to a better understanding of practitioners within the counseling profession and the population they serve. In addition, findings could be used to aid credentialing boards in determining standards for practitioners and to assess the education and training of practitioners who counsel children.
