Out-group value incongruence and intergroup attitude: the roles of social identity and multiculturalism. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collectionJanuary 2009 (has links)
This research was designed to examine the relationship between individuals' perceived value incongruence with out-group members and their attitude towards the target group, as well as the boundary conditions of this process. By using the "inter-subjective consensus approach", in study one we found that among Mainland Chinese college students, their value incongruence with Hong Kong Chinese was negatively related to their attitude towards Hong Kong Chinese. In study two, we found that among participants with high identification with both the Mainland Chinese subgroup and the Chinese super-ordinate group, the negative relation between individual value incongruence and their intergroup attitude was non-significant. In addition, among participants with high multiculturalism endorsement, the relation between value incongruence and intergroup attitude was significantly weaker than those with low level of multiculturalism. A Rhetorical Analysis of Campaign Songs in Modern ElectionsPeterson, Lottie Elizabeth 01 March 2018 (has links)
Since the U.S. presidential election of 1800, candidates have selected campaign songs to underscore their political platforms. The literature on politics and music suggests that in modern campaigns, the significance of music rests not in the song itself but in the artist behind the song and the image associated with that particular artist. This analysis sought to convey how the very process of selecting a campaign song is a profound rhetorical act, and that songs chosen even in modern elections have a specific meaning and purpose tied to the political contexts in which they are embedded. Using an adaptation of Sellnow and Sellnow's "Illusion of Life" rhetorical perspective, which analyzes whether the musical score and lyrics of a single song form a congruent or incongruent relationship, this study analyzed the official campaign songs for both Republican and Democratic candidates for the 1972-2016 elections. The adaptation provided the opportunity to examine the intersection of music, rhetoric and politics, and explore evolving patterns and trends in campaign music.The primary findings of this research indicated that both Republican and Democratic candidates have predominantly made use of congruity in their campaign songs, with that congruity only increasing over time — a surprising result considering congruity can often diminish listener appeal. The song analyses also indicated that in general, Republican candidates tend to utilize songs that are positive and patriotic in nature, while their Democratic opponents incorporate songs that offer a critique of the nation. Additionally, findings also revealed a transition that began taking place in the 1970s to hit full stride in the 21st century, as campaign songs shifted from being a direct endorsement of candidates to focusing on universal themes that could appeal to both sides of the political spectrum.

Selon la théorie de Suls (1972), les situations humoristiques doivent mettre en scène une incongruité qui provoque un effet de surprise. La résolution de cette incongruité déclencherait le rire. Cette théorie ne permet pas d'identifier suffisamment les différents aspects émotionnels mis en œuvre par le traitement cognitif d'une situation humoristique. Aussi, l'enjeu de cette thèse est de montrer l'importance des relations entre les éléments cognitifs et les éléments émotionnels engagés dans le traitement des situations humoristiques. Cette importance commence à apparaître dans la littérature sur l'humour qui a été recensée. Grâce aux thématiques transgressives mises en scène par l'humour noir, il a été possible d'examiner les évaluations cognitives et la variabilité des réactions émotionnelles provoquées par ce type d'humour comparativement à un humour plus standard. Pour clôturer cette thèse et en complément au modèle de Suls (1972), nous avons élaboré un nouveau modèle procédural. Notre objectif était de synthétiser les données de la littérature et certains de nos résultats, tout en ouvrant des pistes favorisant l'étude des relations entre les aspects cognitifs et émotionnels mobilisés par la compréhension et l'appréciation de l'humour. / According to Suls (1972), humor relies on the perception of a situation from two self-consistent but normally incompatible frames of reference, leading to incongruity. The subsequent resolution of the incongruity triggers positive emotional states such as mirth. Yet, the emotional experiences triggered by humorous situations are mostly disregarded in Suls' model. The aim of the present dissertation is to highlight that the relation between cognitive and emotional elements is crucial in the examination of the humor process. Indeed, a growing focus on the interrelation between cognition and emotion can be found in the literature. Because black humor relies on social norm transgression, it allows us to examine both the cognitive assessment and the variability of emotional responses triggered by this humor style, compared to nonblack humor. Finally, we propose a cognitive-emotional model to promote the study of the relationships between the cognitive and emotional aspects of humor.
