Ur en före detta kriminells ögon : en studie av före detta kriminellas livsberättelser

Denna studie syftar till att studera hur före detta kriminella väljer att framställa sig själva genom sina livsberättelser. Vi ämnar undersöka ungdomar som har ett kriminellt liv bakom sig, genom att lyssna på deras livshistorier. Genom dessa berättelser vill vi få fram vilka faktorer respondenterna anser varit väsentliga under deras väg genom det kriminella och vilka vändpunkter som funnits under denna tid. Den narrativa metoden valdes som verktyg för att söka svar på våra frågeställningar. Materialet samlades in genom kvalitativa intervjuer med nio före detta kriminella ungdomar som är aktiva i Unga KRIS. Teorin som användes har rötter inom symbolisk interaktionism. Resultatet har varit att utanförskap och uppmärksamhet i ung ålder är en viktig faktor enligt många av respondenterna för att ett kriminellt beteende ska utvecklas. I äldre åldrar blir gruppdynamiken och berusningsmedel väsentliga faktorer som lett till att de fortsatt med det kriminella. Respondenternas vändpunkter har funnits i olika former och lett till stora skillnader i sina liv. / This study aims to study how former criminals choose to portray themselves through their life- stories . We intend to study young former criminals, by listening to their lifestory. Through these stories, we want to find out which factors our respondents believe has been essential during their way through the criminal life and which turning points that have existed during this time. We chose the narrative method as a tool to seek answers to our question. The material was collected through interviews with nine former criminal youth, who are active in Unga KRIS. The theory used, has its roots in symbolic interactionism. The result has been that exclusion and attention at a young age, is an important factor as for many of our respondents. In older ages group dynamics and intoxicants are significant factors that led to the continuation of the criminal according to our respondents. Our respondents’ turning points have been found in various forms and lead to large differences in our respondents' lives.

Early-warning indicators for tipping points

The term ‘tipping event’ is used to describe a certain class of phenomena as observed in many different fields of science. It refers to an event where a gradual change of external forcing causes a sudden, large, often unwanted, transition to the state of the system. Some examples of known tipping events in science include: Arctic sea ice melting (climate), epileptic seizures (biology), collapse of ecosystems and populations (ecology) and market crashes (finance). Three mathematical mechanisms for tipping events have been proposed in the literature: bifurcation-, noise- or rate-induced tipping. Recent research has focused on developing early-warning indicators to potentially offer forewarning, which can extract from output time series whether the external forcing approaches a critical level at which tipping occurs. Two commonly used early-warning indicators are an increase of autocorrelation and variance in the time series data for the system’s output. The theory behind the presence of these indicators is the loss of stability of the system’s current state known as ‘critical slowing down’ for the approach of a bifurcation-induced tipping. Rate-induced tipping occurs when the external forcing reaches a critical rate instead of level. For rate-induced tipping there is no loss of stability of the system’s current state and therefore it is not clear if the early-warning indicators should exist. In this thesis we investigate the presence of early-warning indicators for models that show rate-induced tipping with additive noise. We also explore a technique for determining the most likely time of tipping using optimal paths for escape. Research has mainly focussed on testing the early-warning indicators for examples of known tipping events in the past. The ultimate aim of early-warning indicators would be to have the ability to predict future tipping events. Using the early-warning indicators in isolation is susceptible to incurring false alarms and missed alarms. We present a method for approximating the probability of experiencing rate-induced tipping with noise for slow to moderate drift speeds.

Liquid-liquid phase transitions and water-like anomalies in liquids

In this thesis we employ computer simulations and statistical physics to understand the origin of liquid-liquid phase transitions and their relationship with anomalies typical of liquid water. Compared with other liquids, water has many anomalies. For example the density anomaly: when water is cooled below 4 C the density decreases rather than increases. This and other anomalies have also been found to occur in a few other one-component liquids, sometimes in conjunction with the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) between a low-density liquid (LDL) and a high-density liquid (HDL). Using simple models we explain how these anomalies arise from the presence of two competing length scales. As a specific example we investigate the cut ramp potential, where we show the importance of "competition" in this context, and how one length scale can sometimes be zero. When there is a clear energetic preference for either LDL or HDL for all pressures and temperatures, then there is insufficient competition between the two liquid structures and no anomalies occur. From the simple models it also follows that anomalies can occur without the presence of a LLPT and vice versa. It remains therefore unclear if water has a LLPT that ends in a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP), a hypothesis that was first proposed based on simulations of the ST2 water model. We confirm the existence of a LLCP in this model using finite size scaling and the Challa-Landau-Binder parameter, and show that the LLPT is not a liquid-crystal transition, as has recently been suggested. Previous research has indicated the possible existence of a LLCP in liquid silica. We perform a detailed analysis of two different silica models (WAC and BKS) at temperatures much lower than was previously simulated. Within the accessible temperature range we find no LLCP in either model, although in the case of WAC potential it is closely approached. We compare our results with those obtained for other tetrahedral liquids and conclude that insufficient "stiffness" in the Si-O-Si bond angle might be responsible for the absence of a LLCP.
