Boundaries in cyberpunk fiction : William Gibson's Neuromancer trilogy, Bruce Sterling's Schismatrix, and Neal Stephenson's Snow crash

Toerien, Michelle 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Cyberpunk literature explores the effects that developments in technology will have on the lives of individuals in the future. Technology is seen as having the potential to be of benefit to society, but it is also seen as a dangerous tool that can be used to severely limit humanity's freedom. Most of the characters in the texts I examine wish to perpetuate the boundaries that contain them in a desperate search for stability. Only a few individuals manage to move beyond the boundaries created by multinational corporations that use technology, drugs or religion for their own benefit. This thesis will provide a definition of cyberpunk and explore its development from science fiction and postmodern writing. The influence of postmodern thinking on cyberpunk literature can be seen in its move from stability to fluidity, and in its insistence on the impossibility of creating fixed boundaries. Cyberpunk does not see the future of humanity as stable, and argues that it will be necessary for humanity to move beyond the boundaries that contain it. The novels I discuss present different views concerning the nature of humanity's merging with technology. One view is that humanity is moving towards a posthuman future, while some argue that humanity is not discarded, but that these characters have merely evolved to the next step in the natural development of humankind. Both these views deal with constant change, a notion advocated by both postmodernism and cyberpunk.

Pós-modernismo e regionalidade no romance Glaucha

Weber, Raquel 20 August 2009 (has links)
Submitted by Marcelo Teixeira (mvteixeira@ucs.br) on 2014-05-28T16:34:28Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Dissertacao Raquel Weber.pdf: 4682234 bytes, checksum: 8377ceda95fbe0e25229a74622ffaf41 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2014-05-28T16:34:28Z (GMT). As imagens da identidade portuguesa entre milenios, em tres ficcionistas atuais / The images of the portuguese identity between millennium, in the view of three current fictionists

The present work was carried out in the scope of the relations between literature and culture, and analyzes the images and representations of the Portuguese identity between millennia (final of 20th. century and beginning of the 21th.) Based on the study of Lidia Jorge, João Aguiar and Maria João Lehning texts, it is intended to highlight the tension between resistance and displacement. The text of the first author intends to show that the national imaginary, since the proto - historical times till to the to the end of 20th. century, formed the cultural configurations of Portugal and the Portuguese man, in a negative and dynamic perspective, where the past, which is not a destination, represents a starting point for the construction of the future. In João Aguiar the context of globalization and European Union takes the first place, where myths, images and values which made the Portuguese imaginary belong to the past memory. To this author, depending on the texts, the degree of resistance to the loss of the identity is configured within a death and/or resurrection frame. To Maria João Lehning it is the end of the immigration to Europe and the return home which are the thematic subjects, and with them the changes, in the last few decades, in the Portuguese physiognomy caused by the globalization and the multicultural effects. In the above authors texts, history and memory are the basic elements to recover the past, as an end of history from a post-modern condition, and seen mainly as ¿stories¿, of an interlacement of history and fiction. The organization of the work includes in Chapter I a reflection on the basic concepts involved in the discussion and bibliographical revision on the national imaginary, from the point of view of some of the most appraised thinkers of the 20th. century Portuguese culture. Chapter II is dedicated to the analysis of the literary texts in view of the apprehension of the identity images at the present times. Chapter III is an interpretation of the considered form of the imaginary in the fiction workmanships, from the look of postmodernity in the perspective of Gianni Vattimo / Doutorado / Literatura Portuguesa / Doutor em Linguística

The location of meaning in the postmodernist literary text: a reading of Mark Z. Danielewski's House of Leaves and related material

Jeffery, Thomas Carnegie January 2004 (has links)
In House of Leaves, Mark Z. Danielewski has produced a text which epitomises the traits and concerns of postmodernist literature. Through his attention to aspects such as metafiction, intertextuality and parody, Danielewski develops a narrative structure which is best understood as a literary labyrinth. It is a structure intended to reflect the social conditions of the twenty-first century and comment on the experience of people living at this time. Some of the meaning-making strategies within the book’s labyrinthine structure are thus discussed in detail in order to demonstrate the relevance and importance of House of Leaves as social commentary. House of Leaves is an exemplary postmodernist text, but it is also one that seeks to guide the reader beyond the intellectual impasse of the postmodernist paradigm toward a renewed ethical and political engagement with the world. One of the most important goals of both Danielewski’s novel and this thesis is to attempt to redefine the postmodernist perspective in such a way as to insist on the necessity of what I call a new realism. This is founded upon an awareness of the pervasiveness of the self-perpetuating ideology of capitalism, even in the perspective of postmodernism (which purports to subvert all authoritative ideologies). Playing a crucial role in perpetuating the status quo of capitalism is the growth of entertainment culture, which works to sideline crucial political issues by replacing information with infotainment. The result is an intensification of the processes of commodification. Such an intensification, it is argued, may be countered by a radical scepticism which draws upon the methods and insights of contemporary science.
