A Preliminary Evaluation of the Students' Realizing Educational Potential Program

Tous, Frances Y. 01 May 1998 (has links)
The Students' Realizing Educational Potential Program (REP) was implemented in the 1993-94 academic year to reduce dropout rates for ethnic minority students at Utah State University . This program is currently funded by a 5-year grant, pending renewal upon demonstration of its effectiveness. A formative evaluation was conducted to determine whether the REP program has accomplished its goals thus far, using 157 minority students. Two levels of analysis were conducted. In the first level, admission index scores, college grade point averages, and the average number of quarters enrolled were compared among three REP and non-REP cohorts . The REP program did not satisfactorily retain its students in its first cohort, but in subsequent cohorts REP student retention rates surpassed those of non-REP peers. It was also discovered that Utah State University is exhibiting student population trends that run opposite to national and statewide trends by decreasing in minorities and increasing in Caucasian students, especially since 1994. In the second level, responses to a questionnaire were qualitatively compared between REP and non-REP students. The REP group had more students from outside of Cache Valley, more students declaring majors and with junior student ranking, higher financial needs, more extracurricular involvement, and more problems integrating into the local community than the non-REP group. In general, the REP program has assisted students in addressing social and academic needs, and has significantly impacted retention rates in its last 2 years. Recommendations for future program development and evaluations were given.

Preliminary Study of Artificial Intervertebral Disc

Yeh, Ming-Chiang Jerry 08 1900 (has links)

This study is one of the projects of the artificial joints group conducted by Professor W. R. Newcombe, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Dr. G. R. Viviani, Department of Surgery.

A summary of the literature survey of the lower back which is pertinent to the design of a replacement for the lumbar spine is reported. Motions, force system, and strengths of the lumbar intervertebral joint are obtained from the literatures and calculation.

Advantages of silicone elastomer and titanium as the biomaterials for the artificial disc are presented. An experiment to test the bond between titanium and silicone reveals that the strength provided by only applying primer is insufficient.

Surface structure for prosthetic stabilization and initial fixation is discussed. Proposed design alternatives for artificial discs are presented with the attempts to reduce the number of moulds needed by introducing a prosthesis with a more regular shape.

An important part of this thesis is to indicate the direction in which further work in this area should proceed.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Preliminary clinical evaluation: Where are we? An international scoping review

Harcus, James, Stevens, B., Pantic, V., Hewis, J. 27 August 2024 (has links)
Yes / Background: The College of Radiographers’ vision was that diagnostic radiographers in the UK would be writing preliminary clinical evaluations (PCE) on images. Their 2013 policy supporting the use of PCE has not been updated in a decade and it might be suggested PCE practices in the UK have not really moved on, though elsewhere it appears to have gained traction. The aim of this scoping review was to establish the current global status of the use of PCE. Method: The Arksey and O'Malley scoping review framework and PRISMA-ScR guidelines were used to develop a protocol to identify studies between January 2013 to January 2024 using six databases. Collated literature was analysed using content analysis to identify themes. Results: 52 relevant studies were identified for inclusion. Studies focused predominantly on evaluating accuracy, education, perceptions, and new initiatives. Themes identified a developing role in the use of PCE internationally, perhaps more than in the UK, and in a range of modalities and clinical settings though projectional radiography remains the mainstay. Barriers and drivers to the use of PCE were identified in addition to some quality mechanisms used to support PCE implementation, though impact of implementation was not well explored. Conclusion: Considering PCE has been an aspiration for more than a decade, it remains relatively infrequently researched. There is growing scope internationally, particularly in Australia, yet there is no real evaluation of the impact and role that PCE may have. Implications for practice: Until further research into the potential impact of PCE and barriers to its implementation, it is likely practices may not evolve with the risk AI technologies may supersede necessity for the practice.

A comparative legal study of preliminary agreements under French and American Law / / Preliminary agreements under French and American law

Pierrot, Claudia. January 2000 (has links)
This thesis is a comparative legal study of preliminary agreements in French and American law. / At the negotiation process, a preliminary agreement has numerous purposes. Those purposes vary with the parties' will. The contrasted concept of preliminary agreement and its hybrid legal nature give rise to legal issues, such as interpretation, enforceability and liability. Those issues are differently tackled in French and American law. / The ambiguity of pre-agreements allows the French and American judges to play a decisive role in the interpretation of such agreements. In accordance with its definiteness and completeness, the pre-agreement may be considered as the final contract and binds the parties. Then, in case of non respect, the blameworthy party may be held liable, and courts may grant damages to the party who has suffered prejudice.

Understanding the needs and life experiences of adult students : A qualitative study of adult students in Preliminary Studies at Keilir

Egill, Jóhannsson January 2016 (has links)
Adult learners bring different experiences and perspectives to their education. It is important they get opportunities to learn at their own speed, through different situations and activities. Consequently, the teaching methods and learning environment are very important to the learner. Therefore the school and it´s teachers play a big role in making the learner feel comfortable and gain new experiences which could help them develop themselves as adult learners and find the right learning path. This thesis explores how the individuals needs and life experience is utilised through the learning process in the learning environment of the Preliminary studies program at Keilir. The focus is on student’s experiences of the learning environment at Keilir in order to see if they meet the needs of adult students. That being said, interviews with former and current participants in the program will show what the students experienced during their time in the program and how they felt their needs were met. Furthermore Lave and Wenger´s (1991) concept of a community of practice will be used to explore the education at Keilir and how learning in collaboration with other students and others that impact the learner’s journey can affect the learner’s education and their learning experience.
