MCCP research report -
School of Psychology -
Faculty of Humanities / The following study aimed to assess coping strategies in adolescents following a
suicide prevention program conducted by the South African Depression and Anxiety
Group. The study aimed to assess whether there was a change in coping strategies in
adolescents following the suicide prevention program. Suicide ideation was measured
using the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation Scale (PANSI) and Coping
Strategies was measured using the Coping Across Situations Questionnaire (CASQ).
Data was collected on 74 individuals in Grade 11 (26 males and 48 females). It was
found that positive suicide ideation was not significantly different for males and
females before the intervention, while females scored higher than males on the
negative suicide ideation scale, indicating that females have more thoughts about
suicide than males. There was no significant difference between positive and
negative suicide ideation scores for both females and males following the suicide
prevention program. The results further indicate that Active Coping; Internal Coping
and Withdrawal Coping were not significantly different for boys and girls in the pretest,
as well as in the post test. A negative relationship appears to exist between post
PANSI negative ideation and Active Coping, which means that individuals who use
more active coping have fewer thoughts about suicide. Active Coping is strongly
related to Internal Coping and moderately related to Withdrawal Coping. Also,
Internal coping is moderately related to Withdrawal Coping. The implications are that
caregivers and professionals can begin to assess individual adolescent suicide ideation
levels through an understanding of the individual’s coping strategy. Further research
should be conducted in other socio-economic regions and rural and urban areas could be compared to get a holistic view of coping strategies and suicide ideation levels in
South Africa, as a country.

Teacher Implementation of a School Based Anxiety Prevention Program in British ColumbiaBacchus, Natashia Soraiya 01 January 2018 (has links)
The Friends for Life program is an evidence-based practice being used in schools to assist children to learn skills to manage anxiety. The Friends for Life program has been used by school districts in British Columbia, Canada, for over 10 years, yet there is little research on how the program is being implemented in schools by teachers. This qualitative case study investigated the implementation practice of the Friends for Life program by teachers in Grades 4 and 5. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 teachers from a smaller school district in British Columbia, Canada. The results yielded themes, which described critical factors that helped or hindered teachers in implementing the program with fidelity. A key finding of the study demonstrated teachers were running the program weekly, as per program guidelines. A key factor that was identified as helping teachers to implement the program with fidelity was support of school counselors, district staff, and the building administrator. The implications for social change include providing school administrators with information, which can help them to support teachers to implement the Friends for Life program with fidelity. As a result of these findings the Friends for Life program may consider updating the training materials and program implementation protocols in order to ensure teachers are implementing the program with fidelity and therefore, children are learning the skills they need to manage their anxieties and worries.

IDENTIFYING THE BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION IN A DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM FOR AT RISK INDIVIDUALS IN RURAL POPULATIONSBrown, Scott 01 August 2019 (has links)
Diabetes is a growing health concern among those in rural locations. Rural residents smoke more, exercise less, have less nutritious diets and are more likely to be obese than urban residents. Evidence-based diabetes prevention programs targeting behavior change are available to this population yet participation remains low. This study examined the self-reported barriers and health beliefs of those who declined participation in a diabetes prevention program (DPP). Of 269 clients identified to be at risk for developing Type II Diabetes (T2D), only 85 answered the phone and 33 were interviewed to discuss their health beliefs and reasons for not participating in a diabetes prevention program. Almost half of the participants who expressed their lack of desire to participate in the DPP cited a low level of interest and not seeing any personal benefit as their primary reasons. Participants were closed off when asked what it would take to get them to participate in the program with 63% citing “nothing” as the most common answer when questioned as to what would encourage their participation. In order to limit barriers to participation in prevention-based programs for rural populations special attention needs to address improving general interest and knowledge about the efficacy of a DPP.

EFFECTIVENESS OF SCHOOL-BASED PREVENTION PROGRAM IN ADDRESSING INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCETrieu, Anna Victoria 01 June 2017 (has links)
Intimate partner violence (IPV) as it stands today still exists in many violent cases involving intimate relationships. Intervention programs seek to address this issue, however, fails to meet their intended outcomes to reduce prevalence rates of IPV. The research study evaluated the use of a prevention program and measures its effectiveness among high school students. This study sought to explain IPV prevention programs, making it explanatory and necessitates a quantitative research design. This study used secondary data analysis to assess effectiveness of this particular prevention program. Data was collected from 130 high school students within the Inland Empire who completed pre-surveys and post-surveys. Through data analysis, the study found the prevention program was effective by increasing the high school students’ knowledge about local resources for those experiencing IPV, specifically where to go for help. Another key finding revealed a majority of the participants were able to correctly define types of relationships and communication styles. However, the prevention program does not necessarily assess for participants’ knowledge on how to address conflict in a healthy manner, as measured by questions asked within the pre-surveys and post-surveys. This is not to say this particular prevention program was not effective in some areas. Still, there is room for improvement as far as future research; collaboration with seasoned researchers, school administrators, and social workers; and policy recommendations on this topic of school-based IPV prevention programs.
