Information technology is present in many different areas of contemporary life. As embedded part of social, economic and cultural systems, software influences the way people interact with each other and with the environment. Ubiquitous computing has challenged the research in communication technologies to rethink many of the traditional definitions in the area. Computer programs for content creating and editing provide the hybridization between different formats, languages and aesthetics, what engenders new media species. The boundaries between user and producer of content, men and machines, 'physical' space and "virtual" dimension have also become increasingly fluid, or even nonexistent. Furthermore, the possibilities of sensory-cognitive expansion offered by communication technologies have led researchers to question even the concept of "human being." This work discusses some of the social changes brought about by ubiquitous computing, from the perspective of software studies. The application for smartphones Foursquare was the subject of an empirical study, done from interviews with its users. In the approach, issues such as space exploration from mobile communication devices, interaction between users, recommendations on the internet and gamification were discussed. The results point to a reality in which people not only choose which kinds of media they want to consume, but customize the use of the tools available, in order to give them an unique and personalized utility.

Scanlators As Produsers : Fan Participatory Practices Online: Free And Affective Manga Produsage And DistributionRatti, Stéphanie January 2013 (has links)
Web 2.0 and the new decentralized, many-to-many technosocial tolls empower consumers and users to reproduce, and distribute content on their own and without permission, shifting the boundaries of participation. Alternative collaborative communities that produce and distribute information, knowledge and culture without seeking profit or operating hierarchically challenge and/or correct commercial entities. This thesis deals with such a variety of collaborative community: the scanlation community. It explores, describes and explains what differences there are in the practices and understandings of scanlators, with a special focus on their attitudes towards legal ownership and profit motives. The main research question is: How do scanlators understand their cultural production, reproduction and distribution practices; with a special focus on which meanings do they ascribe to copyright infringement and the anti-profit motive? In particular, the study provides answers to the following questions: How do some become scanlators? What are the motives of the scanlators? How is scanlation organized? How is it managed? Which beliefs underpin it? Further impacts on and implications for the cultural industry of manga and the society at the level of politics, economy, and culture are taken into account and disccussed. Bruns' produsage based model of collaborative content production and usage is taken here as the main theoretical tool to analyze the participants, processes and principles of the scanlation community. Other concepts derived from fans studies and the political economy of media and communication complement the theoretical framework. Twenty qualitative interviews with individuals contributors to the collaborative process of content creation in a variety of groups were conducted. The analysis of the results of the research suggests that scanlators collaborate in competition and cooperation with their open, free, ad hoc and heterarchical alternative model of (unauthorized) manga tranlation, reproduction and distribution to correct the many shortcomings of the traditional model: it is free, faster and universally accessible; whereas the latter is expensive, slow, and geo-locked. Moreover, scanlators recognize author's moral rights and do not a priori disregard copyrights, but criticize licensing and rights handling mechanisms together with economic and political censorship. Finally, although they do not want to be paid for their free affective labour, they are not adverse to commercial approaches to their produsage, if these take place on their own terms. This thesis serves as a contribution for the better understanding of communal produsage practices, by the produsers themselves.

(Det första jag gör när jag vaknar är att logga in på Facebook. En studie om hur användare av de sociala nätverken upplever den användargenererande produktionen.) Number of pages: 37 (39 including enclosures) Author: Per Magnusson Tutor: Christian Christensen Course: Media and Communication Studies C Period: Fall semester 2010 University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University Aim: The ambition with this essay is to examine how the online users of social networks experience the development of the Internet towards Web 2.0, and the enormous User Generated Content emerging from it. How do we receive User Generated Content from other people, and particularly what do we think about our own production. Material/Method: In order to obtain a deeper understanding of the attitudes and perceptions amongst people regarding this subject I used qualitative interviews with 9 people. To get a breadth in the representation I used three different categories of people. With active bloggers as the first category, people who frequently and actively uses social networks as the second, and as the third and last category I interviewed people who actively logs on to at least one social network without participate to the user generated content. The interviewed people are between 20-30 years old. Main results: The essay shows that the development of Internet, towards web 2.0, has a positive impact on the human life. The reason that the participants in this study produces and participates in social networks is mainly because it is social, fun, educational and a great pastime. Social Networking has become ingrained into people´s lives, and they all like to observe what other people do. It turns out that the general attitude of how you look at your own User Generated Production is that you do not even think about it. The participants do not see the User Generated Content as a production, instead they rather see it as a participation in a social context. Keywords: User Generated Content, Production, Produsage, Web 2.0, Social Networks, Internet, Facebook, Wikipedia.

Využití obsahu generovaného uživateli v české žurnalistice na příkladu deníku Metro / Use of user-generated content in Czech media: the case of Metro dailyHolzknecht, Martin January 2017 (has links)
This thesis is a case study examining a user-generated content delivered to a newsroom of Metro daily and its subsequent evaluation, selection and utilization in printed edition of the newspaper. Their bold attempt of participatory journalism - online gallery of readers' photographs - remains one of the few successful examples of this type of alternative journalism in Czech media even after five years since its foundation. The first chapter provides necessary field context related to the demonopolization and deprofessionalization of journalism as well as to the transformation of the communication framework and the roles of the producer (journalist) and the user (recipient) of media content, furthermore some types of alternative journalism are listed and distinctively characterized. Secondly, a phenomenon of user-generated content (UGC) is described in detail, focusing on its specifics in relation to journalism and on selected examples of the UGC occurring in Czech media. Lastly, I present a research of readers' photos from May, August, November 2016 and February 2017. The content analysis is applied twice - to define a nature of the photographs, their purpose, topic and information quality; to detect which of those gets actually used and printed. The work also focuses directly on the authors of...

Proměna obrazu fotožurnalismu v digitální éře / The Change of the Image of Photojournalism in Digital EraNovák, Vojtěch January 2013 (has links)
We will discuss here the issue of manipulation in the digital era of photojournalism. At first we will describe the relation between photography and its referent inculding its ability to represent the reality. Depicting the contrast between analogue and digital photography we will point out the independent position of digital photography from its referent, which is creating better possibilities for manipulation and decreasing the credibility of photography. Then we will analyze the text The Dusk of Photojournalism? that is reflecting these perspective and offering the solution increasing the position of the relation between photography and its referent. By contrast we will analyze the text called Photojournalism is dead, long live photojournalism. Why digitization can increase the credibility of journalistic photography? which considers this perspective as obsolete and offers us the new perspective of the relation between photography and its viewers, that could increase the credibility of photography in photojournalism. According to these two major perspectives we will point out whether it is possible to consider this option of photography - viewers relation as a relevant alternative. Based on these conclusions we will point out the major point of credibility of journalistic photography and imply...

Fotoalbum a syntagma v prostředí webu 2.0 / The Photo Album and Syntagm in the Web 2.0 EnvironmentVlk, Pavel January 2018 (has links)
The diploma thesis The Photo Album and Syntagm in the Web 2.0 Environment deals with problems of digital photographic collections shared in the web 2.0 environment. The thesis tries to express the basic principles of online photo albums referring to their characteristics, social function, method of arrangement and classification of individual photos. The aim is to verify the assumption that the photo album in the web 2.0 environment loses its narrative function and becomes a set of photos as modular fragments, whose sequence is made to be easily rearrangeable. The thesis is outlined in an interdisciplinary method, in examining of web photo albums it combines knowledge from studies of new media, sociology, philosophy and semiotics. The diploma thesis verifies validity of new medial theories of Lev Manovich in the environment of web digital photo albums and continues in his analyses of behaviour of users of the Instagram social network. As a part of the thesis there is also the own quantitative research, which with its form approximates to the sociological study of Pierre Bourdieu in 60s of the 20th century, devoted to social use of photography. On the basis of the above mentioned theoretical knowledge and his own research we determine what changes of organization and social function of photo albums...
