The effect of combined inductive and deductive training on profile accuracyCothron, Annaliese Simms 01 May 2010 (has links)
Despite the increased use of criminal profiling by law enforcement agencies, few studies examine factors impacting profile accuracy, and only one has evaluated profiler training. The present study examined the efficacy of profiler training on profile accuracy for sexual homicide offenders. Participants (N = 198) were randomly assigned to the training or control condition. Participants in the training condition learned inductive and deductive profiling techniques for sexual homicide offenders, whereas control participants learned about sexual violence prevention. Results indicated that participants’ self-reported use of combined profiling methods produced more accurate profiles. Differences between gender and training groups were also present. These findings suggest brief psychology-based training can be used to teach police officers and detectives to more accurately identify and apprehend criminals.

The effects of crime drama viewing on psychological profile accuracy for a sexual homicide offenderKilgore, Terri Leigh 03 May 2008 (has links)
This study investigated whether watching crime related television shows affected accuracy of psychological profiles for a sexual homicide offender. The television shows in the study were a fiction drama with a profiling element, a fiction drama without a profiling element, a nonfiction show with a profiling element, a nonfiction show without a profiling element, and a fiction drama with no crime element at all. Participants were 290 college students who watched a television show and then profiled a sexual homicide offender. High self-exposure to crime related television shows and experimental exposure to profiling related television shows were associated with greater accuracy for profiling certain aspects of the offender and/or offense. In addition, gender interacted with crime show viewing for certain types of profile accuracy.

Profiling of RT-PICLS CodeKelling, Jeffrey, Juckeland, Guido 15 May 2017 (has links) (PDF)
It was observed, that the RT-PICLS code ran by FWKT on the hypnos cluster was producing an unusual amount of system load, according to Ganglia metrics. Since this may point to an IO-problem in the code, this code was analyzed more closely.

Identifying Dysregulated Protein Activities Using Activity-Based ProteomicsMartell, Julianne January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Eranthie Weerapana / Activity-based protein profiling (ABPP) is a chemical proteomic technique that allows for selective labeling, visualization, and enrichment of the subset of active enzymes in a complex proteome. Given the dominant role of posttranslational modifications in regulating protein function in vivo, ABPP provides a direct readout of activity that is not attained through traditional proteomic methods. The first application of chemical proteomics in C. elegans was used to identify dysregulated serine hydrolase and cysteine-mediated protein activities in the long-lived daf-2 mutant, revealing LBP-3, K02D7.1, and C23H4.2 as novel regulators of lifespan and dauer formation. The tools of ABPP were also utilized in studying protein interactions at the host-pathogen interface of V. cholerae infection, discovering four pathogen-secreted proteases that alter the biochemical composition of the host, decrease the activity of host serine hydrolases, and inhibit bacterial binding by a host-secreted lectin. Lastly, ABPP was used to study the targets of protein arginine deiminases (PADs) using a citrulline-specific activity-based probe (ABP), highlighting its utility in detecting biologically relevant PAD substrates as well as identifying mRNA processing factors as previously unknown targets of PAD. Taken together, these studies demonstrate the ability of ABPP to discover novel protein regulators of physiological and pathological processes. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Crimes of equality: the racial profiling paradox of Canada's "War on Terror".Cairns, Ilona Catherine MacDonald 30 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the relationship between the phenomenon of racial profiling in the post-9/11
context and section 15 of the Canadian Charter. More specifically, this thesis exposes and
unravels the paradox whereby Canada's equality guarantee lacks potential to control or protect
against racial profiling in the ‘war on terror’, despite the fact that especially acute and complex
equality concerns are triggered by the practice. Chapter one explores the way in which the debate
surrounding racial profiling has shifted and taken on distinctive features post-9/11. These changes
to the debate give rise to heightened equality concerns and are complicated by the racialization of
religion. Chapter two asks why Canada’s equality provision has been largely invisible in the
criminal justice context through examining the conceptual relationship between the nature of the
criminal justice system and the logics of section 15. Finally, chapter three addresses, in turn, the
shape of racial profiling jurisprudence and the treatment of race and religion under section 15. I
conclude with some comments about whether it is always correct to discuss racial profiling in the
language of equality. / Graduate
