"Shaking Shakespeare": A case study of a cross-curricular project in year 9 which integrated content and English

An increasing number of schools across Europe offer education which integrates the teaching of content with that of language, sometimes known as CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), or the Swedish equivalent SPRINT (språk- och innehållsintegrerad inlärning och undervisning). In Sweden this type of learning often goes under the name of cross-curricular or interdisciplinary work. This dissertation is a case study of one such project that integrated content and English and that took place in year 9 at a secondary school in southern Sweden. The purpose of the investigation was to find out what the teachers' and pupils' perceptions were of the use and role of English in this particular cross-curricular project. Applying case study methodology, data was collected using triangulation through observations, a focus group interview with the teachers and a pupil questionnaire. The results show that all the involved teachers and a majority of the pupils were positive towards the integration of content and language, but not on a permanent basis. The teachers felt that the project gave the pupils the opportunity to work with the language and develop communication skills. The pupils said that they had learned more speaking skills compared to being taught English as a separate subject, closely followed by writing and reading skills. However, some felt that they had not learned any grammar, which showed a view of English as a skills subject. The study shows that project-based cross-curricular work could be a successful way to integrate content and language, provided projects are well-planned and clearly structured.

Liminality at Work : Mobile Project Workers In-Between

This doctoral thesis addresses how mobile project workers; technical consultants working in projects, experience and deal with project-based work. The thesis consists of a compilation of five papers and an extended summary. It is based on three qualitative studies including methods like interviews, diaries, and observations. The thesis adopts and develops the conceptual lens of liminality. The results of this thesis show that mobile project workers use four different practices to deal with liminality at work. Furthermore, the thesis develops the framework of “liminality competence,” indicating that some mobile project workers are better at utilizing their liminal positions than others. The thesis also studies how liminality competence is developed and how formal training programs influence the liminal position for mobile project workers. / I denna avhandling studeras hur mobila projektarbetare, i detta fall teknikkonsulter som utför arbete i kundprojekt, upplever och hanterar projektbaserat arbete. Avhandlingen presenterar tre kvalitativa studier som bygger på intervjuer, dagboksanteckningar och deltagande observationer. Avhandlingen består av fem artiklar och en kappa. För denna studie används begreppet liminalitet som fångar den mobilitet och organisatoriska tvetydighet som föreligger i mobila projektarbetares arbetssituation. Avhandlingen utvecklar liminalitetsbegreppet ytterligare relaterat till liminella positioner i arbetslivet. Analysen identifierar fyra liminalitetspraktiker som mobila projektarbetare använder för att hantera sin arbetssituation. Dessutom utvecklas begreppet liminalitetskompetens. Detta begrepp används för att förstå hur mobila projektarbetare hanterar sin liminella arbetssituation och vilka skillnader som finns vad gäller förmågan att hantera liminalitet i arbetet. Avhandlingen undersöker också hur sådan kompetens utvecklas och hur formella lärandeprogram kan påverka liminalitetssituationen och liminalitetskompetensen hos mobila projektmedarbetare.

Towards a New Employment Relationship Model: Merging Changing Needs and Interests of Organisation and Individual

This research investigates the new psychological contract phenomenon in an organisational case study. The research question underpinning this study is - What are the core attributes of the new employment relationship? To investigate this research question, the researcher applied Noer's (1997) new employment relationship model to a disproportionate stratified sample of 19 participants from three organisational perspectives in an Australian-based international travel retail organisation, Flight Centre Limited, which specialises in the sale of discount international airfares. Data from a survey instrument were analysed using a "Multi-source Assessment" instrument. The data analysis method was used to create a schema to guide and inform a series of focus groups. The research findings validated Noer's five attributes of Flexible Employment, Customer-focus, Focus on Performance, Project-based Work and Human Spirit & Work. In addition, three other attributes of the new employment relationship emerged from the data, namely, Loyalty & Commitment, Learning & Development and Open Information. The research findings validate eight core attributes of the new employment relationship and therefore make a contribution to the expanding body of research in this field. The research approach also provides organisational practitioners with a unique consulting methodology to merge the changing needs and interests of individual and organisation.

Job crafting i projektmiljö : Blir man mer engagerad på jobbet? / Job crafting in a project environment : Will it increase your work engagement?

Studiens syfte var att undersöka om graden av work engagement kan prediceras utifrån aspekter av job crafting bland människor som arbetar i projektform. Det har gjorts genom en kvantitativ undersökning där en tvärsnittsstudie genomförts för att besvara studiens frågeställning och att uppfylla dess syfte. Data har samlats in som enkätsvar och analyserats. Enkäten har utformats med hjälp av befintliga instrument som översatts till svenska. Totalt har 74 svar inkommit. Resultatet visar på ett signifikant samband mellan job crafting och work engagement. Inga koefficienter för de enskilda aspekterna av job crafting visade sig signifikanta i regressionsanalysen. Använda begrepp definieras och problematiseras och tänkbara anledningra till erhållet resultat diskuteras. / The aim of the study was to investigate whether the degree of work engagement can be predicted from aspects of job crafting among people working in project form. This has been through quantitative research where a cross-sectional study has been conducted inb order to answer the research question and fulfill the purpose of the study. Data has been collected through a questionnaire and analyzed. The questionnaire has been designed based on existing instruments that has been translated into Swedish. A total of 74 answers were received. The results indicate a statistically significant relationship between job crafting and work engagement. No coefficients for the for the individual aspects of job crafting proved significant in the regression analysis. The concepts and terms used are defined and problematized and possible reasons for the obtained results are discussed.
