Recognition Of Self Conscious Emotions In Relation To Psychopathology

The aim of this study is to discover nonverbal, bodily gesture and contextual cues indicating self-conscious emotions and use these clues to examine personal differences and psychopathological symptoms. Moreover, possible effects of cultural differences on self-conscious emotions&rsquo / recognition and their relation to psychopathology are meant to be discussed. To achieve aforementioned goals, the study is partitioned into three separate but interdependent phases. The aim of the study is scale adaptation for which the State Shame and Guilt Scale, Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3, Guilt- Shame Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory are applied to a group of 250 university students. The second study&rsquo / s objective is to determine the nonverbal expressions used in recognition of self-conscious emotions. To meet this goal, 5 TAT cards, whose compatibility with the research questions is verified, are applied to 45 university students in separate sessions by using close ended questions. In the third part of the study, 9 TAT cards, which include clues about recognition and nonverbal expressions of self-conscious emotions, adapted corresponding scales, and a psychopathological symptoms measuring scale (SCL-90) in self-report format are applied on a group of 250 university students. Factor and correlation analyses done in the first part reveal that adapted scales are reliable and valid, while group comparisons and measurements of the second part indicate differences in emotions. Findings reveal that shame can be recognized by nonverbal expressions whereas for guilt contextual clues are facilitated. In the third part, group comparisons and regression analyses, which are done in order to reveal self-conscious emotions&rsquo / recognition and their significant relationships with psychopathology, display that state self-conscious emotions and shame-proneness have very important roles on psychopathology. All these findings are discussed in the light of cultural effects.

The impact of design complexity on software cost and quality

Context: Early prediction of software cost and quality is important for better software planning and controlling. In early development phases, design complexity metrics are considered as useful indicators of software testing effort and some quality attributes. Although many studies investigate the relationship between design complexity and cost and quality, it is unclear what we have learned from these studies, because no systematic synthesis exists to date. Aim: The research presented in this thesis is intended to contribute for the body of knowledge about cost and quality prediction. A major part of this thesis presents the systematic review that provides detail discussion about state of the art of research on relationship between software design metric and cost and software quality. Method: This thesis starts with a literature review to identify the important complexity dimensions and potential predictors for predicting external software quality attributes are identified. Second, we aggregated Spearman correlation coefficients and estimated odds ratios from univariate logistic regression models from 59 different data sets from 57 primary studies by a tailored meta-analysis approach. At last, it is an attempt to evaluate and explain for disagreement among selected studies. Result: There are not enough studies for quantitatively summarizing relationship between design complexity and development cost. Fault proneness and maintainability is the main focused characteristics that consume 75% total number of studies. Within fault proneness and maintainability studies, coupling and scale are two complexity dimensions that are most frequently used. Vote counting shows evidence about positive impact of some design metrics on these two quality attributes. Meta analysis shows the aggregated effect size of Line of code (LOC) is stronger than those of WMC, RFC and CBO. The aggregated effect sizes of LCOM, DIT and NOC are at trivial to small level. In subgroup analysis, defect collections phase explains more than 50% of observed variation in five out of seven investigated metrics. Conclusions: Coupling and scale metrics are stronger correlated to fault proneness than cohesion and inheritance metrics. No design metrics are stronger single predictors than LOC. We found that there is a strong disagreement between the individual studies, and that defect collection phase is able to partially explain the differences between studies.

Kognitivní mechanismy spjaté s náchylností k halucinacím / Cognitive Mechanisms Associated with Proneness to Halutinations

Hallucinations are often seen as a serious symptom of mental illness. Nonetheless, recent decades have produced a body of evidence that documented the presence of hallucinations even in non-clinical samples. Therefore, focusing on these samples is critical for improving understanding of processes underlying auditory hallucinations. The present study examines cognitive mechanisms that have been proposed to influence proneness to auditory hallucinations. A battery of experimental measures is implemented to assess some of the mechanisms implicated in the aetiology of hallucinations. Source monitoring, cognitive inhibition, bottom-up processes, working memory and traumatic experiences were measured in a laboratory study of 52 participants. Findings suggest that proneness to hallucinations is associated with impaired top-down processing and early traumatic experiences. No association between other cognitive mechanisms and hallucination proneness, contrary to previous evidence, has been found. This indicates that impaired source memory, working memory and bottom-up processing impairments might distinguish clinical and non-clinical hallucinators. Impact of psychological trauma on the development of psychotic symptoms: relationship with psychosis proneness

Background. The reported link between psychological trauma and onset of psychosis remains controversial. Aims. To examine associations between self-reported psychological trauma and psychotic symptoms as a function of prior evidence of vulnerability to psychosis (psychosis proneness). Method. At baseline, 2524 adolescents aged 14-24 years provided self-reports on psychological trauma and psychosis proneness, and at follow-up (on average 42 months later) participants were interviewed for presence of psychotic symptoms. Results. Self-reported trauma was associated with psychotic symptoms, in particular at more severe levels (adjusted OR1.89,95% CI1.16-3.08) and following trauma associated with intense fear, helplessness or horror. The risk difference between those with and without self-reported trauma at baseline was 7% in the group with baseline psychosis proneness, but only 1.8% in those without (adjusted test for difference between these two effect sizes: χ2=4.6, P=0.032). Conclusions. Exposure to psychological trauma may increase the risk of psychotic symptoms in people vulnerable to psychosis.

Age Differences in Marriage: Exploring Predictors of Marital Quality in Husband-Older, Wife-Older, and Same-Age Marriages

Using data from a nationally representative sample of 723 married adults, this study explored the association of age differences between spouses at the time of marriage on various aspects of marital quality years into the marriage. Four groups (full sample, husband-older, wife-older, and same-age marriages) were compared to see how marital quality was affected by age difference and several other moderating variables. Spousal interactions increased among wife-older marriages, but not among the other groups. An increased level of husband participation in household labor was linked with an increase in marital happiness and a decrease in marital problems for wife-older marriages. It also was related to a decrease in marital happiness for husband-older marriages as well as a decrease in spousal interaction for all groups except wife-older marriages, which showed no significant association to the division of household labor. Finally, a more traditional approach to gender roles among the same-age marriages was associated with a decrease in marital problems and a decrease in spousal interaction.

Error-Tolerant Reasoning in the Description Logic EL

Developing and maintaining ontologies is an expensive and error-prone task. After an error is detected, users may have to wait for a long time before a corrected version of the ontology is available. In the meantime, one might still want to derive meaningful knowledge from the ontology, while avoiding the known errors. We study error-tolerant reasoning tasks in the description logic EL. While these problems are intractable, we propose methods for improving the reasoning times by precompiling information about the known errors and using proof-theoretic techniques for computing justifications. A prototypical implementation shows that our approach is feasible for large ontologies used in practice.

The Unique Nostalgic Shopper : Nostalgia proneness and desire for uniqueness as determinants of shopping behavior among Millennials

Millennials, or Generation Y, represent one of today’s most prominent age cohorts: with their increasingly stronger purchasing power and importance in the global economic landscape, it is no wonder that marketers are striving to find new ways to appeal to the taste of this peculiar generation of consumers. Among the various modern research fields in business, one in particular is offering incredibly interesting insights to both scholars and professional marketers: the concept of nostalgia proneness in consumer behavior. While several studies examine the dynamics of this phenomenon, none of them so far examined the impact of nostalgia proneness in shopping behavior, especially examining the dynamics on a sample of Generation Y consumers. This study was conducted in order to explore the dynamics of nostalgia proneness, linking the constructs to both desire for uniqueness and shopping behavior, using the framework provided by the Consumer Styles Inventory (Sproles & Sproles, 1990). After a theoretical review on the matter, several hypotheses and a conceptual model were developed to serve as the core framework of the quantitative analysis. The data, obtained from a convenience sample of 222 respondents, were subsequently examined using several statistical techniques (ANOVA, correlation and factor analysis), with the intent to test the hypotheses and shed light on the research questions. The outcome was then presented and interpreted using both the theoretical background and other complementary relevant literature. The results showed a positive relationship between nostalgia proneness and desire for uniqueness, with both variables being further connected to several shopping traits of the Generation Y consumer. The cluster and factor analysis eventually showed patterns that could be interpreted using the theory of hedonic and utilitarian shopping motivations.

A metacognição é processo conceituado como o julgamento que um organismo (humano ou não humano) faz sobre seu próprio saber ou não saber. Há relatos de pesquisas sobre esse processo com seres humanos e diversas espécies de não humanos. Poucos estudos, porém, discutem a ocorrência de metacognição em ratos, e os resultados são controversos, em função de questionamentos sobre os procedimentos experimentais empregados. Este estudo teve o objetivo de investigar o efeito da manipulação de diferentes proporções de reforço produzidas em duas alternativas, sendo uma probabilística e outra com reforçamento contínuo, sobre o desempenho de ratos em uma tarefa de discriminação de diferentes durações de estímulos sonoros. O procedimento empregado é uma adaptação do utilizado por Foote e Crystal (2007), que investigou a ocorrência de metacognição em ratos. Foram utilizados cinco ratos machos, da linhagem Wistar (Rattus norvegicus) mantidos a 80% de seu peso ad libitum. O aparato utilizado foi um labirinto em Ey. O procedimento consistiu de quatro fases: 1) Treino exploratório no braço em Y, no qual o animal foi exposto a alternativas que continham seis pelotas de ração; 2) Treino de discriminação de estímulos sonoros, no qual foram treinadas duas discriminações condicionais com duas durações de estímulo sonoro, uma curta (2s), e uma longa (8s), cada uma correlacionada com a escolha de uma das portas do braço em Y; 3) Treino exploratório no braço em I, no qual os animais foram expostos a uma alternativa livre, que continha três pelotas de ração; e 4) Fase de Teste, na qual foram apresentadas diferentes durações de som (2.00, 2.44, 2.97, 3.62, 4.42, 5.38, 6.56 e 8.00s), a partir das quais o animal poderia escolher entre o braço em Y (fazer o teste), e receber seis pelotas de ração caso escolhesse a porta correta (correlacionada à duração curta ou longa), ou escolher a alternativa de recusa do teste, produzindo, com certeza, a quantidade de ração estabelecida pela condição em vigor. Foi analisada a porcentagem de escolhas realizadas pelos animais nos braços Y e I em cada condição, assim como a relação entre a porcentagem de acertos e erros nos testes e recusa, para cada duração de som. Todos os sujeitos atingiram o critério de aprendizagem estabelecido na fase de treino. Na fase de testes, observou-se que o som deixou de exercer controle sobre a resposta de escolha de todos os animais. À medida que a proporção de reforço variou na alternativa de recusa, os animais alteraram o padrão de escolha, de propensão para aversão ao risco, de acordo com a condição em vigor. A escolha por uma alternativa não se mostrou sob controle da acurácia dos animais em discriminar as durações dos estímulos apresentados, mas sim da proporção e probabilidade do reforço em cada alternativa. The applied procedure was adapted from that used by Foote and Crystal (2007), which investigated the occurrence of metacognition in rats. Five male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) were used and maintained at 80% of their weight ad libitum. The apparatus used was an Ey-shaped maze. The procedure consisted of four phases: 1) exploratory training on the Y arm, in which the animal was exposed to alternatives containing six pellets of food; 2) training on sound stimuli discrimination, in which were trained two conditional discriminations with two different sound stimuli durations one short (2s) and one long (8s) each linked to the choice of one door from the Y arm; 3) exploratory training on the I arm, in which the animals were exposed to a free-choice alternative containing three pellets; and 4) test phase, in which were used different sound durations (2.00, 2.44, 2.97, 3.62, 4.42, 5.38, 6.56 and 8.00s), giving the animal the option of choosing between the Y arm (doing the test) and get six pellets of food if it chooses the correct door (according to the short or long duration), and the refusal of the test, producing, that way, an amount of food established by the current condition. Its been discussed the need to resort to the concept of metacognition to describe the animals performance in tasks such as the one applied in the present study.

[pt] Os elementos de código geralmente mudam ao longo da evolução do sistema, o que implica em uma eventual degradação estrutural do código fonte. Sintomas recorrentes de tal degradação são chamados anomalias de código. Estudos sugerem que quanto mais anomalias de código afetam um sistema, mais alta se torna a propensão a bugs dos elementos de código. Para lidar com tal degradação da qualidade estrutural do código, desenvolvedores geralmente aplicam refatorações no código fonte. No entanto, aplicar refatorações pode não ser suficiente para reduzir a propensão a bugs dos elementos de código degradados. Um estudo recente sugere que refatorações induzem bugs frequentemente. No entanto, os autores não analisam se o código refatorado está, de fato, diretamente relacionado à introdução de bugs. Com isso, nesta dissertação, realizamos dois estudos longitudinais de múltiplos projetos para avaliar a propensão a bugs do código refatorado. Nossa metodologia teve como objetivo abordar várias limitações de estudos anteriores. Por exemplo, definimos duas propriedades complementares da propensão a bugs do código refatorado, sendo elas, frequência e distância. Enquanto a primeira propriedade quantifica a frequência com que um código refatorado está relacionado a bugs que emergiram no código fonte, a distância quantifica o quão próximo um bug surge depois que uma refatoração é aplicada. Nosso primeiro estudo tem como objetivo avaliar a propensão a bugs de refatorações isoladas. Primeiro, nossos resultados mostram que 80 porcento dos elementos degradados que se tornaram bugs não foram previamente refatorados. Este resultado implica que um código refatorado é menos propenso a bugs do que um código não refatorado. Em segundo lugar, em 75 porcento das vezes um bug surge depois de 7 mudanças feitas a partir da operação de refatoração, o que geralmente corresponde à 3 meses nos projetos analisados. Recurring symptoms of such degradation are code smells. Studies suggest that the more frequently code smells affect a system, the higher becomes the bug-proneness of the code elements. To tackle code structural quality degradation, developers often apply refactorings on smelly program elements. However, applying refactorings might not suffice to reduce the bug-proneness of such degraded program elements. Previous empirical studies do not systematically analyze the bug-proneness of refactored code. Even though a recent study suggests that refactoring induces bugs frequently, the authors do not analyze to what extent refactored code is indeed closely related to the bug occurrence. Thus, in this dissertation, we conducted two longitudinal multi-project studies to assess the bugproneness of refactored code. Our methodology aimed to address various limitations of previous studies. For instance, we have defined two complementary properties of the bug-proneness of refactored code, i.e., frequency and distance. While the former quantifies how often a refactored code is related to emerging bugs, the latter quantifies how close a bug emerges after a refactoring has been applied. The quantitative analysis of such properties was complemented by a manual analysis of refactorings closely related to the bug occurrence. Our first study aims at assessing the bug-proneness of code refactored through isolated refactorings, i.e., a single refactoring operation not performed in conjunction with other refactoring operations. This study reveals that 80 per cent of the smelly elements that became buggy were not previously refactored. This result suggests the refactored code is much less bug-prone than non-refactored code. Moreover, in 75 per cent of the times, a bug emerges in 7 changes far from the refactoring operation; this amount of changes usually corresponds to 3 months in the analyzed projects. Our second study aims at assessing the bug-proneness of code elements refactored through batch refactorings, i.e., a sequence of inter-related refactoring operations. Our results show that code refactored through batches is often more resilient to the introduction of bugs as compared to code refactored through isolated refactorings.
