The issue of a Muslim woman‟s dress code has been debated for centuries. This is of great importance as it is widely used as a criterion to measure the extent of a woman‟s piety or devotion to Allah.
A study of the religious texts on the issue is essential. Therefore, Qur‟anic text, Prophetic Traditions and Qur‟anic exegesis of both classical and modern scholars would have been used in determining the correct dress code for Muslim women.
While all research indicates that women dress conservatively, in order not to attract the attention of the opposite sex. The extent to which a woman must be covered has not been agreed upon. Even if what has to be covered is established by scholars, the manner in which this is to be done and the type of colours and fabric to be used needs further clarification.

Chapter 1 describes practical theology as a communicative operational science and stresses how important it is that a hermeneutical and narrative approach compliments it. It is shown that pastoral work must be launched from the church community. The premise is that the Enlightenment paradigm causes a reductionistic, individualistic and denominational approach to pastoral work. A holistic, comprehensive and ecologically orientated approach is proposed.
Chapter 2 discusses the need for an ecosystemic approach as a metaparadigrn for practical theology in terms of the move away
from the Newtonian view of science and the post-modem critiques of a technocratic society. This is supported by developments in systemic family therapy, constructionism and community psychology.
Chapter 3 describes an interrelated ecclesiology as a base theory for practical theology and pastoral work with reference to the church's interrelation with society and the need to include an anthropology as part of an ecclesiology. This interrelationship implies that the serving (diakonia) and caring (koinonia) functions of the church should converge, forming a diaconal pastorate.
In chapter 4 the secularised modem world-vie\v and the traditional African world-view, both functioning in South Africa, are employed to shed light upon the importance of the concept community for the church's pastoral work. The term community is broadened to include the idea of networking, emphasisingg that community is more than geographical proximity.
Chapter 5 is a quantitative investigation. by means of a questionnaire, of the views (ecosystemic/non-ecosystemic) of pastoral workers regarding the church and of pastoral work.
Chapter 6 discusses the implications of a community pastoral work approach. Pastoral work has a serving-caring role, but should also function prophetically, to conscientise. sensitise and empower people. The church as a healing community must become the springboard from which pastoral actions can face the challenge of AIDS (chapter 7). The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, presuppose Roman Catholicism, but are today made by many who are not Catholics. Moreover, even Roman Catholics who make Ignatian Exercises often are not spontaneously inclined to obey Roman ecclesiastical authority. Neither avoiding the ecclesial dimension nor an authoritarian ‘follow the rules!’ provides spiritual directors with adequate orientation when working with issues at Church frontiers. This dissertation in pastoral theology seeks to navigate a middle position by moving beyond the individualism and the a-historical assumptions of the existing relevant literature. The dissertation remains close to the Ignatian primary sources, in the awareness that the Ignatian tradition needs to be constantly updated and that the contemporary ecclesial frontiers are not fully foreseen in the canonical texts. The main hypothesis is that a notion is needed of a ‘pilgrim Church’ in space and time, with Christians who are related to one another in a deep and fundamental sense. The minor hypothesis is that the individual needs to be open towards and prepared to learn from the Roman Catholic Church, in order to understand and to be profoundly moved by these exercises, but not necessarily to become a Roman Catholic. Having presented and discussed various approaches in the writings of twentieth-century and recent thinkers, this thesis puts forward its own ecclesiological position informed by Charles Taylor, Hans-Georg Gadamer and Karl Rahner. The aim is to take Ignatian studies forward by combining relational anthropology, hermeneutics and a sacramental understanding of the Church, and to apply this synthesis to the practice of giving Ignatian Exercises. The final chapter discusses a selection of cases in the light of my ecclesiological position. The synthesis and application claim originality.

The apocalyptic tradition in Scotland, 1588-1688Drinnon, David A. January 2013 (has links)
Throughout the seventeenth century, numerous Scots became convinced that the major political and religious upheavals of their age signified the fulfillment of, or further unfolding of, the vivid prophecies described in the Book of Revelation which foretell of the final consummation of all things. To date, however, an in-depth analysis of the evolution of Scottish apocalyptic belief during the seventeenth century has never been undertaken. This thesis utilizes a wide variety of source material to demonstrate the existence of a cohesive, persistent, and largely conservative tradition of apocalyptic thought in Scotland that spanned the years 1588 to 1688. Chapter One examines several influential commentaries on the Book of Revelation published by notable Scots during the decades either side of the Union of Crowns. These works reveal many of the principal characteristics that formed the basis of the Scottish apocalyptic tradition. The most important of these traits which became a consistent feature of the tradition was the rejection of millenarianism. In recent years, historians have exaggerated the influence of millenarian ideals in Scotland during the Covenanting movement which began in 1638. Chapter Two argues that Scottish Covenanters consistently denounced millenarianism as a dangerous, subversive doctrine that could lead to the religious radicalism espoused by sixteenth-century German Anabaptists. Chapter Three looks at political and religious factors which led to the general decline of apocalyptic expectancy in Scotland during the Interregnum. It also demonstrates how, despite this decline, Scottish apocalyptic thinkers continued to uphold the primary traits of the apocalyptic tradition which surfaced over the first half of the century. Lastly, Chapter Four explains how state-enforced religious persecution of Scottish Presbyterians during the Restoration period led to the radicalisation of the tradition and inspired the violent actions of Covenanter extremists who believed they had been chosen by God to act as instruments of his divine vengeance in the latter-days.

Weltanschauung, have been categorised in terms of their authenticity. The current work
explores reports occurring in single transmission chains that are corroborated in word or
meaning by other similarly narrated reports whose source at the level of Prophet
Muhammad's companions could either be the same or different.
Rules pertaining to this field have been amalgamated for the first time to simplify their
application. Appropriated practical examples have been given to illustrate harmony between
theory and praxis.
Concentration has been restricted to a corroboration of reports by other transmission chains.

This thesis is an historical analytical investigation and theological analysis
of the fundamental trends of the ‘Third Wave’ Religious Right Movement and
the growth of Zimbabwean Christianity. In an attempt to understand the
appealing and growth factors of this religious movement in the Zimbabwean
Church scene, the research focuses on the trends and behaviour of the
Third Wave Religious Right Movement in Zimbabwe and the critical aspect of
how this religious movement communicates the Christian faith to its
audience. A critical thrust of the study is the question of whether the
disciples of the charismatic movement are motivated by faith or economic
factors which may ultimately not be the authentic summons of the gospel of
Jesus Christ. The research addresses fears and suspicions of many
Christians who are caught up between faith and fear response to the
proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by the New Religious Right
Movements, particularly in Zimbabwe.
The hypothetical statement of this work is that there seems to be a subtle
reconstruction identity in the theology of the “Third Wave” Religious Right
Movement as is clearly manifested through the maneuverings of Christians
from the ‘traditional churches’ to these ‘newer charismatic churches in
trends which reflect the changing religious geography and the face of African
Christianity in general and Zimbabwean Christianity in particular. The
research explores the nature, impact and significance of the post – modern ‘Third Wave’ Religious Right Movement in Zimbabwean society in particular.
The identity and nature of the ‘Third Wave’ Religious Right Movement in its
historical perspective discussed by means of identifying and analyzing the
characteristics of this movement and its theological perspectives as well as
discussing the factors that promote the growth of the movement in the
context of Missio Dei (God’s Mission) and the society in general. Critical to
this type of Christianity are the images of power and prosperity which are
understood as signs of faith. The impact and effects of this type of faith
expression in the socio-political landscape is fully explored.
The primary methodology in this study is the historical critical method
complimented by oral historiography. Both primary and secondary sources
are utilized in this research in a holistic framework for analyzing the
historical trends as they unfold in the context of religious declarations and
transformations that are part of the phenomenon under investigation. The
study observes the translation model of evangelization in the unfolding
discourse of the ‘Third Wave’ Religious Right Movement.
The study ultimately reveals how people’s economic fears and hopes in the
midst of life’s challenges draw them toward religious movements which
promise to positively promote a glorious life with practical results being
realized “here and now”. This study has clearly exposed how religion,
specifically charismatic Christianity, is seen as a package of an abundant life in the context of humanity’s needs and challenges. There is a clear obsession, in the charismatic New Religious Right Movement, with wealth
and health as pedestals of salvation and a faithful Christian life.
Surprisingly, there is very little reference to moral and ethical issues from
the charismatic prophets who are the founders of these New Right
Movements. The research notes that the interests of these newer right
movements are in prosperity and health: “signs of being saved and blessed”.
Lack of economic success is blamed on demons which also causes poor
health hence the need to denounce the powers of Satan and engage on “the
heavenly gear”. Such teachings have conditioned the prospective converts to
seek after material benefits and values as critical aspects of the meaning of
salvation and the mission of Christ.
The study further reveals that the ‘Third Wave Religious Right Movement
promotes a subtle way of making disciples instead of the traditional way of
faith response to the gospel proclamation. But does this charismatic
religious life have any relevance to our human situation today? The seven
compelling chapters of this study have tackled this question and many
others, pointing the way to an authentic Christian mission that is alive and
relevant to the meaning of salvation in the context of orthodox Christianity.
This study concludes that the Church is a catalyst which carries the keys of
salvation to bring meaning and solutions to the varied human fears and
failures that characterise the temporary nature of human existence. But in
doing so; the Church must act in spirit of orthodox Christianity which is the
