Let Our Youth Speak: A Phenomenological Analysis of Resilience in Students with Multiple Risk Factors

Hodge, John W. 07 May 2009 (has links)
Resilience is a phenomenon that refers to the ability to overcome risk factors that increase the likelihood of academic or social failure. Considerable research has been conducted to determine what may enhance or hinder the ability of individuals to overcome adversity. Unfortunately, much of the research has focused primarily on factors that place individuals at greater risk of failure. Today in the United States, a number of students experience academic failure due to multiple risk factors. However, the research is clear that there are individuals referred to as resilient who are able to achieve at high levels in spite of many of the same risk factors. This heuristic phenomenological study provides insight, based on interviews with high risk, African-American, young adults, into those factors that enabled them to exhibit behaviors consistent with resilience in spite of risk factors in the home, school or community. The study helps to illuminate their challenges and the reasons for their success. / Ed. D.

Childhood Emotional Abuse, Effects, and Protective Factors: Comparison of Protective Factors between Emotional and Physical Abuse

Papafratzeskakou, Eirini 07 June 2011 (has links)
Although emotional maltreatment is clearly a very important issue that impedes youths' development, it has only recently begun to receive the attention it deserves. The present study hypothesized that for adolescents with high self-worth, high religiosity, high parent and peer support, high family cohesion, and low family conflict the negative effects of emotional abuse on internalizing symptomatology would attenuate. Additionally, the same protective factors were hypothesized to moderate the relationship between emotional and physical abuse and adolescent internalizing symptomatology. Two samples were used in order to test the aforementioned hypotheses: 1) a whole sample that consisted of adolescents with no or any emotional and physical abuse (N = 220) and 2) a no physical abuse sample that consisted of adolescents with no or any emotional abuse (N = 118). In order to assess the study variables the following measures were used: Conflict Tactics Scale-PC, Self-Perception Profile, Youth Religiosity Scale, Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, Family Environment Scale, and Youth Self Report. None of the study's hypotheses were supported by the current data. It is assumed that this might be due to the sample's nature and it is suggested that future studies utilize a sample with different age groups and with higher reports (means) of emotional and physical abuse. However, the findings suggested that emotional abuse had a stronger effect on internalizing symptomatology than physical abuse, and the significant main effects of self-worth, parent support, peer support, and family cohesion indicated the importance of their presence in adolescents' psychological adjustment. / Ph. An Investigation into the Effects of Chemical Protective Clothing on Team Process Performance

Grugle, Nancy Lynn 12 May 2001 (has links)
Chemical protective clothing is designed to protect the worker by providing a barrier between the individual and the contaminated environment. Unfortunately, the same equipment that is designed to help can often cause heat stress, reduced task efficiency, and reduced range-of-motion for the worker. Teams as well as individuals suffer from these effects resulting in difficulty communicating, increased task completion time, and reduced productivity. Studies investigating the effects of protective clothing generally focus on individuals; however, the military has produced research related to the effects of Mission Oriented Protective Posture (MOPP) on team performance outcomes in an attempt to understand how protective clothing might affect military teams and squads. Previous research has indicated a degradation of team performance as shown by increased task completion time; however, a comprehensive team performance measurement system studies not only the performance outcomes, but also the processes behind the outcomes. In order to provide a more complete understanding of the performance effects of protective clothing and equipment, this investigation focused on the effects of MOPP on the behavioral processes underlying team performance to include adaptability, communication, and coordination. It also attempted to validate previous studies on performance outcomes. Ten subjects formed five, two-member teams. Subjects were certified EMT's from local rescue squads and were required to perform CPR and spinal injury management (SIM). They performed each task twice-once in their duty uniform and once in MOPP level 4. Team performance was measured using the TARGETS methodology, and event-based team process performance measurement technique. A team performance index score (TPI) was calculated for each team for all four tasks and then used as the dependent measure for the analyses to compare team performance in a duty uniform versus performance in MOPP 4. Three hypotheses were tested in this study. They were as follows: team process performance will be degraded by MOPP, task completion time will increase as a result of wearing MOPP, and errors will increase as a result of wearing MOPP. Results of six primary analyses indicated that team process performance was not degraded and the number of errors did not increase when teams were wearing MOPP 4. Results did show, however, that task completion time was significantly longer when teams were wearing MOPP 4. The implications of these results are discussed in the thesis and design changes are put forth. / Master of Science

Liquid cooling garment for personal protective ensemble : modeling and simulation

Yin, Yan 01 January 2002 (has links)
Personal protective ensembles (PPE) are required for people exposed to hazard, which may prevent heat dissipation from the human body, leading to suffering from heat stress. To protect the PPE wearer from heat stress, a liquid cooling garment is widely accepted to provide personal cooling inside the PPE. For an impermeable PPE or a high humid environment, sweat evaporation is also prevented, and moisture accumulation may lead to discomfort. It is important to make sure that the liquid cooling garment removes enough heat to suppress sweat while not over-cooling the wearer. A thermoregulatory model was introduced and modified, in which the human body is divided into six parts, including the head, trunk, arms, hands, legs and feet. A whole/partial liquid cooling model, formed with a network of tubing, is developed. A thermal resistance network for the tubing system is built up and the control volume method is employed to carry out the numerical calculation. The liquid cooling model, thermoregulatory model and heat/mass transfer involved are integrated into one model, which can simulate a PPE wearer thermally interacting with the water cooling system, predict the physiological responses and ensure the wearer is free of heat stress. The mathematical model is verified by comparing its simulation results to experimental data from other researchers. This model is to be used to provide guidance to properly choose PPEs in various conditions.

Ochranné léčení a zabezpečovací detence / Protective Therapy and Preventive Detention

Rejfek, Tomáš January 2013 (has links)
- PROTECTIVE THERAPY AND PREVENTIVE DETENTION This paper is concerning two types of protective measures in Czech criminal law - protective therapy and preventive detention. The goal was to introduce and then deeply analyze these two legal institutes. I particularly focused on preventive detention as it was only recently put in force in the Czech republic. In the introductory chapter, I briefly described the nature of protective measures as a whole. I also outlined some major differences between protective measures and penalties, gave some insight into the history of protective measures in Czech lands and explained a few important terms, e.g. insanity or drug addiction, which are widely used in this area of law. The following chapter deals with protective therapy and its key features, namely its imposing, execution and duration. The next one summarizes basic elements of preventive detention, which are in many ways similar to those in the previous chapter. I tried to point out the grounds on which preventive detention was embraced by Czech law and also to analyze the differences between both these protective measures. In this thesis I included some major court decisions with paramount importance and I also have done a short comparison of statutes governing preventive detention in a few foreign...

Ochranné léčení a zabezpečovací detence / Protective Therapy and Preventive Detention

Úředníčková, Adéla January 2014 (has links)
The primary aim of this work is to summarize and evaluate the current legislation for institutions providing compulsory treatment and preventive detention, and if possible to also provide a comprehensive overview of the development of these institutions, ordering and discharging them, with respect to the relevant decisions of the court. This work consists of six chapters, with each one dealing with individual aspects of these institutions, and the introductory chapter mainly explains the circumstances behind the choice of this theme and their impact on the assignment and goal of this work. Another chapter is devoted to the historical development of compulsory treatment and preventive detention. It is demonstrated here how these institutions developed in Europe, as well as the development of protective measures before the establishment of independent Czechoslovakia, namely until the adoption of the Safe Detention Act and embedding compulsory treatment and preventive detention in the new Criminal Code. The third chapter is devoted to protective measures as a whole. It describes what is actually meant by protective measures, which parts of these institutions belong to this category, and in particular it shows major differences between punishment and protective measures. Special attention is also given...

Protective Treatment and Security Detention Abstract This diploma thesis summarizes information about the institutes of involuntary commitment, especially involuntary treatment and security detention. A goal is to describe their development, imposition and their program. The next goal is to examine the influence of physical activity on patients and perpetrators who had been subjected to involuntary treatment or security detention. And finally to describe the opportunities for physical activity in psychiatric hospitals and detention institutes. This diploma thesis also surveys the opinions of the staff working in these facilities on the above stated issues. The first part introduces basic information concerning this topic. Next comes a part describing types of punishments and preventive measures. In the subsequent part, I describe measures imposed on juveniles and children under the age of 15 with an emphasis on protective education. Next, I explain important concepts and terms connected with this topic. I pay attention primarily to insanity, diminished sanity, mental illnesses and abuse of addictive substances. The thesis describes protective treatment in general as well as the types of protective treatments and the way they are carried out. The imposition of protective treatment is the topic of the next...

Evaluation Of Protective Structures In Archaeological Sites For In Situ Conservation Of Architectural Remains And Artifacts

Ertosun, Isil Atiye 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Artifacts are moved to museums after the excavations in order to provide an indoor protection, while the immovable findings remain exposed to environmental conditions and human activity. In order to conserve these architectural remains made of vulnerable material, mosaics and wall paintings in situ, covering structures are designed offering temporary or long-term sheltering, preserving and exhibiting facilities. The aim of the study is to evaluate these protective structures. In this study, national and international approaches in the conservation of archaeological sites are studied in order to form the theoretical framework. Following the theoretical research, problems facing excavation sites, in situ conservation, interventions and the presentation of the archaeological sites are studied. New building in an archaeological site is discussed in architectural and conservation perspectives and evaluation criteria are defined. Selected cases are studied according to their material selection, functional and physical efficiency, compatibility with the remaining and its urban context in terms of the determined principles. The study is concluded with the general remarks for a new protective structure for the preservation and presentation of the architectural remains in an archaeological site.
