Partículas e Aerogéis nanoestruturados de SiO2/TiO2 e SiO2/TiO2-Azul da Prússia para aplicação em fotocatálise heterogênea / SiO2/TiO2 and SiO2/TiO2-Prussian Blue nanostructured particles and aerogels for application in heterogeneous photocatalysis

Ferreira Neto, Elias Paiva 21 May 2018 (has links)
Despite its potential as a promising and sustainable approach for environmental remediation, heterogeneous photocatalysis still has limited practical applicability due to the low efficiency of the existing photocatalysts. In this context, research on the Chemistry/Materials Science interface is of utmost importance for the development of synthetic routes that allow preparation of novel multi-component photocatalysts with controlled properties and enhanced photocatalytic performance. The studies reported in this thesis describe newly developed or improved synthetic routes for the preparation of nanostructured photocatalysts in the form of particles and aerogels through incorporation of highly photoactive TiO2 nanoparticles in silica materials as thermally stable structural supports. Additionally, the prepared silica-titania photocatalysts were further modified with Prussian Blue (PB), hexacyanometallate Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3, in order to enhance the efficiency of photocatalytic reduction reactions. In order to correlate the observed photocatalytic performance with the physical/structural properties of the photocatalysts, the prepared photocatalysts were characterized using an array of complimentary techniques. In the first part of the study, core-shell SiO2@TiO2 particles were prepared by the adsorption and controlled hydrolysis of titanium isopropoxide precursor on the surface of submicron silica particles. The rate of titania deposition and the resultant particle morphology as well as TiO2 loading could be effectively controlled by changing solvent composition (isopropanol/ethanol ratio). The prepared SiO2@TiO2 core-shell particles showed superior performance for crystal violet dye photodegradation as compared to unsupported TiO2, in addition to their improved thermal stability due to the formation of Si-O-Ti interfacial bonds. In the second part of thesis, new synthetic routes were developed for the preparation of high surface area silica-titania aerogels employing TiCl4 as an alternative titania precursor. We explored the thermohydrolysis of TiCl4 to promote thermo-induced deposition of titania on silica monolithic gels and epoxide-assisted gelation method for formation of titania gel network around silica aerogel particles, thus yielding SiO2@TiO2 core-shell and SiO2/TiO2 composite aerogels, respectively. The prepared silica-titania aerogels displayed remarkable physical properties, including high surface area, large pore volume and outstanding thermal stability of the supported anatase nanoparticles. The robust thermally stable mesoporous structure of the prepared aerogels, coupled with the ability of silica to inhibit anatase-to-rutile transformation, led to the enhancement of photocatalytic activity with an increase in annealing temperature to as high as 1000 ºC. In fact, the photocatalytic activity of silica-titania aerogels annealed at 1000 ºC outperforms that of both pristine titania aerogels and Degussa P25 commercial photocatalyst. In the final part of the study, the prepared TiO2-based particles and aerogels were further modified with PB and PB/MoS2 by photodeposition method. We could demonstrate that PB can act as an efficient co-catalyst for the photocatalytic reduction of highly toxic Cr(VI) species to the non-toxic Cr(III), thus largely improving the photocatalytic performance of TiO2-based photocatalysts under UV illumination. Finally, simultaneous modification of the titania-based photocatalysts with both PB and the visible-light active semiconductor MoS2 lead to a synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) under visible-light as well. The photocatalytic materials developed in this study may find useful application in many areas such as environmental remediation, wastewater purification and the development of self-cleaning ceramic coatings.

Aesthetics in ruins : Parisian writing, photography and art, 1851-1892

Tranca, Ioana Alexandra January 2018 (has links)
This project explores two main lines of inquiry concerning representations of ruins in Paris. I first identify a turning point in the evolution of the ruin leitmotif beyond Romanticism in its transfer into a new context: modern Paris. The analysis demonstrates the correlation between this leitmotif and urban environment in transformation, and their influence on aesthetics, leading to the renewal of modes of representation in literary and visual discourse. Unconventional ruins, recently created by demolition during Haussmannisation (1853-70) or war (1870-71) challenge conceptions about space (inside/outside, up/down, visible/invisible), time, and the individual in relation to the city. In view of tracing the transformation of the ruin ethos in relation to modern sensibilities towards the city and its modes of representation, a chronological approach concentrates on two main periods divided into four chapters. The first interval extends from 1848 throughout the Second Empire and the second spans the 1870-1871 conflagration and the Third Republic. An interdisciplinary and dialogic approach reveals the exchanges between different media (literature, journalism, painting, photography) aiming to convey the paradoxes of Paris's modern ruins. Moreover, close reading and comparisons of authors' and artists' depictions across media and genres nuance, correct or disprove critical appraisals, re-establishing artistic authority (e.g. photographers Charles Marville and Bruno Braquehais). The second line of inquiry posits that representations of ruins reflect on the relationship of Parisians with their city during systematisation and wartime destruction. Research reveals that individual initiatives of representing urban ruins attest to a new sensibility towards the city, preceding the Second Empire's (1853-1870) apparatus of historical and topographic documentation to preserve the appearance of spaces before intervention. Thus, during Paris's systematisation, private and artistically-minded projects become the tools of patrimonial preservation. By comparison, aesthetic approaches to ruins in 1871 mark a new appreciation of modern architecture, while engaging with war trauma.

Keeping Europe in order : conservative international political thought in Victorian Britain, 1854-1880

Smittenaar, Richard January 2014 (has links)
Conservative international thought in Victorian Britain is a prominent landmark in the landscape of international thought which has up to now gone unmapped. In illuminating this body of thought, the thesis addresses weaknesses present in three different historiographies. As the first detailed study of conservative international thought in Victorian Britain, the thesis rectifies a marked bias in Victorian intellectual history towards the study of liberal and radical thought. Furthermore, by analysing the political thought of major representatives of the conservative educated classes, this thesis provides context for the history of conservative high politics, thereby leading us to view these in a different light. Finally, this study, by providing a historically nuanced account of the evolution of major themes of international relations theory in mid-Victorian Britain, functions as a corrective to the self-history of the academic field of International Relations. The thesis makes its argument by analysing conservative contributions in periodicals, pamphlets, and newspapers to British public debates on international affairs, from the Crimean War (1854-56) until the Eastern Question crisis of 1876-80. The general claim of this thesis is that there existed a distinctly conservative perspective on the international sphere. The core elements of this conservative perspective were the primacy of statesmen in setting foreign policy; of interests, military force, and stature in determining the course of international politics; and of order and equilibrium as its normative content. Conservative authors used this constellation of ideas in the major debates of the mid-Victorian era on international affairs, both as a means to make sense of events, and as a counterpoint to liberal narratives - with which Victorian international thought is all too often identified. In recovering the international political thought of Victorian conservatives, this thesis illuminates an important but neglected aspect of how international relations were understood and conceptualised in mid-Victorian Britain.

In this work it was studied the influence of the electrochemical posttreatment parameters in potenciodinamics conditions on the stability and reactivity against organophosphates by eletrodepositaded iron (III) hexacyanoferrate (II), better known as blue of Prussia (PB). The posttreatment of the film at low sweep rates leads to the formation of the PB \"soluble\" with the formation of larger grains and a more electrochemically stable films as demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry (VC), atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron espectroscopic (XPS) tests. Films post-treated in HCl/KCl 0.1 M media were more electrochemically stable in an acid media, while films submitted to post-treatment in neutral media were more stable in neutral media.

Since the first description of biosensor reported by Clark and Lyons in 1962, numerous works related to the development and enhancement of novel medical biosensing techniques have been published. In that context, it must be highlighted the study of electrode surfaces as it has direct influence in aspects like; sensitivity, stability and signal quality. Therefore, this project aims to evaluate three electrode surfaces based on nanostructures with Prussian blue nanoparticles, as redox probe, and carbonaceous materials (like graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes) and their application in biosensors. It was evaluated aspects like composition, redox capacitive characteristics and signal stability. The electrochemical capacitance spectroscopy technique (ECE) was used as it offers several advantages like no need of signal amplifiers (redox probes) in solution and, then, making this technique more adequate for point-of-care diagnosis. Among the analysed surfaces, the one composed by Prussian blue nanoparticles and graphene oxide (PBNP+GO) was identified as the best surface in terms of stability and compatibility to the theoretical aspects of ECE. Therefore, that structure was selected to further biosensing essays, by functionalizing the surface with Anti-IL-6 antibodies, that indicated the selective detection of the IL-6 biomarker. / 1583843

These species have a great affinity for N-heterocyclic compounds, amino acids, sulfoxides, thioethers and thioamides. The modification with different ligands allows the modulation of their properties and reactivities. These complexes can also produce Prussian blue, which is a well-known mimetic of peroxidase enzyme. In this work, the pentacyanoferrate (II) complex [Fe(CN)5(isn)]4- (isn = 4-carboxilatepyridine or isonicotinate), which reactivity was used to obtain Prussian blue films deposited on the surface of glassy carbon electrodes. The films were used in the electrocatalytical quantification of ascorbic acid, which is a very important analyte with industrial and biological importance. The characterization of the complex was performed using UV-Vis and infrared spectroscopy, which theoretical calculation showed good agreement with experimental data. Also, cyclic voltammetry was used to determine the electrochemical properties of the complex. Substitution kinetics of the N-heterocyclic ligand indicated that the switch for DMSO occurs by a dissociative mechanism, with kinetic and thermodynamic parameters in agreement with analog complexes described in literature. The synthesized complex was used to obtain thin Prussian blue films by the potentiostatic method. These films, which were stable at pH 3.0 and 5.0, were used in the catalytical electrooxidation of ascorbic acid, showing linear response for the determination of this analyte. Another interesting feature of this system is the variation of the anodic peak potential with pH change. From these results, it was possible to conclude that the films obtained using this methodology have great potential in the construction of electrochemical sensors / Mestrado / Quimica Inorganica / Mestre em Química

Female Allegory as Anti-Nationalist Satire in "L'attaque du Moulin" and "Boule de Suif"

Bailey, Deborah 24 June 2009 (has links)
The year 1880 was rife with nationalist fervor and a general glorification of the French nation through imagery, literature and legislation. However, at this same time, Les Soirées de Médan, a collection of stories concerning the Franco-Prussian war also appear, bringing with them a distinctly anti-nationalist, harsh, and unforgiving view of the war and France's role in it. This thesis will examine personifications of France within L'attaque du Moulin and Boule de suif, the first two texts of Les Soirées de Médan, and their definite lack of the nationalist enthusiasm that characterized the time of their creation. The study of these allegorical representations reveals the place in the mentality of the French people of the concept they represent, a shorthand for a complex and evolving idea. Though others have mapped out the historical appearance and place of representations of France, I will delve into the possible reasons for the necessity of the feminine in this allegorization, the connotations and conventions that make it an effective tool for fighting nationalist tides for both Zola and Maupassant, and the historical and political context that allow us to trace a general shift in the concept of the nation through these female symbols. Furthermore, given the prevalence of female allegories at the time, and the monopolization of their usage for political purposes, the choice of these authors to employ allegory (a rhetorical mode characterized by its official status with the very regime they are criticizing) takes on further levels of criticism and satire. Exploring the opposition and relationship of these two literary female allegories to contemporary allegorical and visual representations will reveal how they relate to-and eventually criticize and reject-the prevailing political and nationalist discourse of their day.
