Episodes of change in experiential systemic marital therapy : a discovery-oriented investigationFerrada, Natacha 11 1900 (has links)
This investigation sought to discover, identify and describe in-session
change episodes in marital Experiential Systemic Therapy (Friesen et al., 1989)
through a naturalistic discovery-oriented methodology. This study responds to calls
made regarding the need to study complex and intricate processes, such as
psychotherapy (Greenberg, 1986), via discovery-oriented methods (Mahrer, 1988).
The observational analysis of 40 videotaped-sessions, of three couples,
revealed the presence of ten episodes of change. The actions and interactions of
the members of the therapeutic system in these episodes were analyzed via the
grounded theory method of analysis. This analysis generated a conceptual
framework describing the internal structure of change.
The resulting conceptual framework consisted of a core category named
synergetic shifting. This category refers to an interactional process in which the
partners with the assistance of the therapist moved away from rigid, distancing and
alienating interactional patterns toward interpersonal flexibility, compassion and
affiliation by working through blocks hindering the couples' engagement and
intimate connection. Synergetic shifting consists of four client and three therapist
categories. Within the progressive nature of synergetic shifting, the client categories
were: (1) owning one's part in the relational conflict; (2) couple contacting: restricted
and limited; (3) couple working through blocks to intimacy; and (4) couple engaging
compassionately. The therapist's actions and interactions were categorized under
supporting, transitional and shifting operations.

A phenomenological explication of a client's retrospective experience of psychotherapyEppel, Mark Dan January 1980 (has links)
From introduction: This study is an attempt to explore and describe phenomenologically a clients total retrospective experience of psychotherapy. The research consistently and radically approaches the phenomenon of the experience of psychotherapy from the clients own perspective and is conceived as a mutual project between researcher and subject. The phenomenological method is used to explicate the subjects qualitative experience of psychotherapy so as not to impose any presuppositions regarding the nature of this experience. At all times the research remains as faithful as possible to the subjects personal account of her therapy experience

Ko-evolusie van betekenissisteme binne 'n terapeutiese konteksFraser, Annette 07 1900 (has links)
In this study an attempt has been made to research the congruence between social constructivistic theory and social constructivistic therapy, with particular focus on the process of co-evolution in psychotherapy. The basic underlying assumptions of the social constructivistic theory is presented in the literature review. The application of the aesthetic principles to the pragmatics of therapy, is researched and described. The theoretical principles are
illustrated in practice by means of a case study. The presentation of the case study particularly emphasizes the
co-evolution of meaning systems in the problem determined system, through the process of drawing distinctions and complexifying the ecology of meaning systems, with the aim to dissolve the problem determined system. The ecology of meaning systems includes the professional and individual meaning systems of the therapist. In the process of research, the recursive interdependence between theory, therapy and research was amplified. / Psychology / M.A. (Voorligtingsielkunde)

A qualitative exploration of personal change through counselling psychology trainingClifford, Miranda January 2010 (has links)
Counselling and psychotherapy training courses emphasise the importance of trainee's personal growth and development but there seems to be little understanding of what these terms actually mean in terms of trainee's personal changes and experiences and how they impact on trainees, their relationships and clinical practice. This study explores the personal change experiences of seven trainee counselling psychologists from six London universities using semi-structured interviews. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) identified nineteen common themes across four domains: (a) personal changes, (b) the impact of personal changes on trainee’s relationships and clinical practice, (c) the experiences contributing to changes, (d) acknowledgement of personal change in training. The findings show that counselling psychology training has a profound impact on trainees which affects their relationship with themselves, their partner, family, friends and their clinical practice, however the findings show that this impact is not made clear or addressed and supported enough in training. Since little research has been conducted into trainee's experiences through training, the findings from this study provide a much needed insight into trainee's experiences, and the implications of these findings for training programmes and directions for future research are discussed. The findings highlight that more research into the personal impact of training is needed to normalise and contextualise trainee's experiences, facilitate trainee's learning and engagement and increase their awareness of the positive and transformative changes and contributions to clinical practice which counselling psychology training can enable.
