The Temple of Justice; A New Federal Courthouse for the City of Baltimore

Mattaliano, Megan E. 25 June 2013 (has links)
The New Baltimore Federal Courthouse was to be memorable. It would symbolize the transparency, power, and public worth of the American judicial system. It would be a modern temple to justice that would be worthy of the public\'s trust. The new courthouse was to be progressive, with sky gardens rising in the tower overlooking the Baltimore Convention Center and over the harbor. This courthouse was to be a high performing, bioclimatic skyscraper and its stewardship to the environment would be as literally transparent as the courtroom would be figuratively. The procession of would be a heightened experience of majesty for the public, who would visit the courthouse out of civic duty and also privilege to participate in justice. / Master of Architecture

Edif 60 anos de arquitetura pública / Public architecture in São Paulo city public building project departament since 1948

Takiya, André 07 May 2009 (has links)
This study, EDIF - 60 anos de arquitetura pública (EDIF 60 years of public architecture) is a simple selection of two distinct moments of architecture (work and thought), carried out by architects in a government office of the city of São Paulo (Convênio Escolar School Partnership in the 1950s and EDIF in the 2000s), and a methodological principle of organization of a vast material that is confused and in deterioration, like the ones that exist in any public service in Brazil. This study provides a preliminary presentation of these projects and of some architects thoughts, without aiming to reach definitive conclusions. To achieve this, we chose some architects of Convênio Escolar (Hélio Duarte, Roberto Tibau, Eduardo Corona, Ernest Robert de Carvalho Mange and Oswaldo Corrêa Gonçalves) and one work (CEUs Unified Educational Centers) of the team of architects of the Constructions Department (EDIF) of the Municipal Secretariat of Urban Infrastructure and Works of the Municipality of São Paulo.

Lotsen - Ett stadsdelshus i Spångastadsdelshus i Spånga

Luckhurst, Julian January 2020 (has links)
The project was about the designing and development of a public building, specifically a new district building in Spånga, with both offices and public spaces. The objective was to develop and interpret a specified program and putting the building in a local context as well as having a clear architectural feel. The building is intended to serve as a meeting place between the staff of the district's departments and the local citizens, but also to encourage meetings between local residents. The project would also address spatial relationships and issues around the building versus places, function, organization, sustainability and communication, as well as how public buildings are perceived democratically.

Public domesticity in Turin

Nicastro, Marco January 2020 (has links)
Starting from an analysis of the character of the city of Turin (Italy), the project intervenes in the historical urban context with ta proposal for a multimedia library and archive space in a plot left vacant after WW2 bombings. The project includes the reuse of an existing building, formerly a theatre but currently in a state of ruin after the war destructions, as well as the creation of a new wing and public spaces. Its aim is to develop an architectural language that can be an interpretation of the city’s features, sitting halfway between contemporaneity and tradition. The main sources of inspiration are baroque architecture, porticoed public spaces, formal front facades in contrast with more messy and autonomous internal courtyards. The resulting building mixes these influences in a complex combining archive spaces for the nearby Museum of Cinema, offices connected to it, a public library and consultation spaces, multifunctional and lecture rooms, and an independent café with indoor and outdoor seating.

sellgren, Pelle January 2012 (has links)
Smoking and passive smoking is a public health problem. It is derived from the smokers right to smoke and the non-smokers right not to be exposed. This can lead to conflict between non-smokers and smokers when non-smokers want to avoid exposure to tobacco smoke, while smokers are entitled by law to smoke in an outdoor environment. The purpose of this study is to investigate smokers and non-smokers experiences of smoking with the hope of finding a solution where both groups experiences can be met. Non-smokers do not want to be exposed to smoke and smokers want to smoke undisturbed. There is a problem with the tobacco prevention work carried out in Sweden due to the preventions are aimed to make it inconvenient for the smoker to smoke. Therefore, there is reluctance to find a solution that smokers may perceive as positive. The study was conducted through 20 interviews  with 10 non-smokers and 10 smokers, half of both gender, and qualitative content analysis ,and qualitative content analysis. I found 12 main categories, six from each group. In this study, I concluded that it is about the places where the groups met. Few non-smokers are disturbed of smoking if they are not exposed to it. Places and situations where non-smokers feel that they are exposed to smoking are at entrances and while waiting for public transport. According to the results the two groups supports introduction of special smoking places. The reasons for this may differ slightly between the groups, smokers want to smoke undisturbed and non-smokers do not want to be exposed to smoke. There is desire for a distance of at least 15 meters from the public building or public transport but it may as smokers express not be too far away. Smokers have limits on how far they should have to walk to smoke. They do not want to run from the special smoking place to catch the train / bus. The most interesting is that when it comes to non-smokers, is that they say they are exposed especially at large entrances and places where they are waiting for public transport, while this sites offer exactly what smokers want in terms of the design of special places for smoking. There are roofs, ashtrays and seating and there is nothing to prevent them from smoking there. The sites offer exactly what smokers believe well arranged smoking places are. / Pelle sellgren
